Year on year changes – average weekday listenership
January – December 2012 didn’t see growth for any of Ireland’s national stations. All
national stations experienced declines in market share, albeit a small one. Despite this
slight drop, RTE Radio 1 is still outperforming all other national stations for All Adults;
it is 13.4 percentage points above its nearest competitor; Today FM. Mary Wilson’s
Drivetime show was up by some 22,000 listeners. Despite being down on last year,
Today FM (14.6%) continues to surpass Radio 1 in terms of 15-34s with successful
shows such as the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show (up 4,000 listeners) and the Ray Foley
Show (up 7,000 listeners). Although Ray Foley left Today FM for 98FM in October
2012, he is credited with the increase in listeners in the January – December 2012
book. 98FM’s market share continues to be eroded in Dublin while FM104 goes from
strength to strength. We will see in the next book if Ray Foley will
regain some of the breakfast listeners with his new show.
