Closed on Mondays, December 29 - January 3, & the second Sundays of August & February.

Free Legal Consultations with a certified lawyer available on
Saturdays 10:00 - 12:30 by reservation only. To make an appointment, please leave your name & phone number on the answering machine at 052-581-6111. A counseling support staff

Advice and information on education for children of both Japanese and foreign
nationality - including information about schools, school admissions, daily

★Free Counseling Service for Refugees and Asylum Seekers 難民相談
The Kobe-based Refugee Assistance Headquarters (RHQ) provides a
confidential counseling service for refugees, convention refugees, their family
members, and asylum seekers in English and Japanese on every Thursday of
the month (10:00 - 16:00) at the NIC 3F Info Counter. Reservations are
required. For more information call RHQ at 078-361-1700 (website

★The NIC Library ライブラリー
Over 10,000 English language books including travel guides, popular manga,
non-fiction, fiction, children’s books, and Japanese study guides. Borrow up to 6
books for a period of 14 days! Membership is free and open to everyone resident
in the Chubu Area. A form of ID that shows your current address is required.
Children can also get cards!

A Valuable Resource for Foreigners and Japanese Living In & Around Nagoya
The Nagoya International Center has a free civic advisory service to provide information and advice to
foreign residents on issues related to government administration such as labor laws, immigration, divorce,
and taxation.
The NIC offers free over-the-counter guidance on these types of matters to help foreigners who may be
having difficulty with certain procedures or paperwork or simply need a few queries cleared up. We are
here to help.
The civic advisory service is available the following languages at these times:
English, Portuguese & Spanish: Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 - 12:00 & 13:00 - 17:00
Chinese: Tuesday to Friday 13:00 - 17:00; Saturday & Sunday 10:00 - 12:00 & 13:00 - 17:00

Nagoya International Center also has a Gyōseishoshi (行政書士 / Certified Administrative Procedures Legal
Specialist) available on Tuesdays and Sundays to answer questions regarding immigration procedures
such as certificate of eligibility applications, change of status of residence applications, extension of
period of stay applications, permanent residence applications, and certificate of authorized employment
applications. They can also assist with international marriage procedures, business establishment and
incorporation procedures, documentation of inter-corporate contracts, and consultations related to
inheritance, wills and related matters.

外国人講師募集
Want to help us to create a globally aware Nagoya? As part of its
international understanding education program, NIC’s Classroom
for Global Citizens program is looking for foreign instructors to
visit schools and local organizations and introduce their home
countries. Successful applicants should be able to communicate in
Japanese, and be available to attend an interview and training
session on Sat. 23 Apr. (interview from 13:00; training 14:00 16:00).
Compensation: 6,000 to 8,000 Yen per assignment depending
on the venue location (income tax and commuting costs are
included).
The application form can be downloaded from the NIC website,
or you can pick one up at the NIC.

NIC International Walking – Atsuta Jingū,
Miya-no-Watashi Park, Shirotori Garden
国際交流ウォーキング ∼熱田神宮∼宮の渡し公園∼白鳥庭園∼
The Nagoya International Center's volunteer NIC Walking Guides
are hosting a walking event to give Japanese and foreign residents
an opportunity to interact while exploring the city’s Atsuta Ward.
The course begins at Atsuta Jingū (熱田神宮) and ends at Shirotori
Garden (白鳥庭園), via Miya-no-Watashi Park (宮の渡し公園). English,
Portuguese, Spanish, and Chinese language interpreters will be
accompanying the walk.
When: Sat. 28 May (9:00 – 12:00)
Where: Meet at the wicket at Jingu Nishi Stn. (神宮西駅) on the
Subway Meijo Line (地下鉄名城線) at 8:45.
Cost: Participation fee 100 Yen (covers insurance); Shirotori
Garden entrance fee 300 Yen.
Reservations: 30 places available (20 foreigners, 10 Japanese) on
a first-come, first-served basis; reservations required. Visit or

NIC Japanese Class for Adults
NIC日本語の会
For non-native speakers of Japanese, up to 15-20 places available per
course. All lessons are held in Japanese, and knowledge of hiragana
and katakana are assumed. In the event of excess applications, places
will be allocated by lottery. A range of courses are available from
conversation to kanji. See the website for more info at

When: 11 lessons every Sunday from 15 May to 24 Jul.
Where: Nagoya International Center
Cost: 2,500 Yen for 11 lessons, plus 500-1,000 Yen for course
materials.

May between 11:00 and 11:30. (Applications for 2nd classes from
11:30.) Following completion of the application procedure, applicants
will be interviewed. Payments will be accepted from 12:15. Application

NIC Japanese Class for Children
NIC子ども日本語教室
For non-native speakers of Japanese who were born between April 2,
2001, and April 1, 2010. Maximum of 50 places. In the event of excess
applications, places will be decided on a needs basis. Students will learn
Japanese skills necessary for school and daily life.
When: 10 lessons every Sunday from 15 May to 17 Jul. (10:00 11:30)
Where: Nagoya International Center
Cost: 1,000 Yen for 10 lessons.
How to Apply: Come to NIC 4F Lecture Room 3 on Sun. 8 May,
between 9:45 and 10:15. Following completion of the application
procedure, applicants will be interviewed. Applicants must attend with
their parent, guardian, or person responsible for their welfare (ie.
teacher, etc.). Application forms and information can be found at the

NIC Library Closure

In order to make NIC facilities more comfortable for users, an
extensive refit of the air conditioning system will be carried out in
coming months. While this work is underway, the NIC Library will
be closed during the following periods:

• Fri. 9 Sep. to Fri. 30 Sep.
Please note that NIC Information Counter services, including
consultations, will be available within the NIC Library between Tue.
31 May and Thu. 30 Jun. The Internet Corner will not be available

Nagoya City Art Museum Special Exhibition:
Tsuguharu Fujita - Painting East and West
名古屋市美術館特別展
「生誕130年記念 藤田嗣治展 東と西を結ぶ絵画」
An exhibition commemorating the 130th anniversary of the birth of the
representative Japanese modern Western painter, Fujita Tsuguharu
(Léonard Foujita). Working in both Japan and France, his art gave birth
to a new form of expression through his incorporating oil painting with
Japanese techniques, and was truly founded on the fusion of the culture
and history of East and West. This exhibition looks at the essence of
Fujita's art that blossomed from the cultures of East and West, through
around 150 representative pieces from Japanese and foreign collections,
including previously unseen artworks donated in recent years by Fujita's
family to the City of Reims.

& art booths, activity workshops, eco & environmental recycling
booths, stage performances, and around 20 food and refreshment stalls (using local produce).

Mammoth Flea Market Z vol.55
マンモスフリーマーケットZ vol.55
Held in spring and autumn, with over 2,500 booths and more than
50,000 visitors, this is one of the largest flea markets in Japan.
Using the whole of Portmesse Nagoya, this truly mammoth market
also features a stage show with appearances from celebrity guests,
a food and drink corner, food trucks from around Japan and a host
of other attractions. You can easily spend the whole day there!

The 10th Yosakoi Yume Matsuri 2016
第10回よさこい夢まつり2016
Around 100 teams, young and old, from all over Japan will
converge on Nagoya to perform in this colorful and vibrant
three-day festival of traditional Kōchi-style Japanese street dancing.
Admission is free to all stage areas except Shirotori Gardens where
admission to the Gardens is 300 Yen for adults. A flea market and
food stalls will also be available at the Port of Nagoya venue.

Belgian Beer Weekend 2016

Beer, food, music and Belgian lifestyle! The Belgian Beer Weekend
will be kicking off in Hisaya Odori Park for a massive twelve days. It
will then make its way to Fukuoka (May), Yokohama (May),

Takayama Spring Festival 春の高山祭
Takayama Festival (Takayama
Matsuri) is the collective name for
two events, the spring Sannō
Matsuri of Hie Shrine (held on April
14 and 15), and the autumn
Hachiman Matsuri of Sakurayama
Hachiman Shrine (held on October
9 and 10). Considered to be one of
Japan’s three most beautiful

16th to early 17th century, and has been protected and passed on
faithfully by the people of Takayama.
The Sannō Matsuri heralds the arrival of spring to Takayama, and is the
annual festival of the patron deity of the southern half of the former
castle town, Sannō-sama. Twelve floats, or yatai, the pride of the
parishioners, appear in the Kamimachi area south of Yasukawa Street.
Three of these floats present offerings of performances by karakuri
ningyō, or marionettes, just part of the lively traditional arts featured in
the festival.
The main events include the procession of hundreds of people in
traditional dress accompanying the portable shrine (mikoshi) on its
sojourn; the pulling and gathering of the twelve floats, which are
designated National Important Tangible Folk-Cultural Property; the
karakuri performances; and the fantastic spectacle of the
lantern-adorned floats during the night festival on April 14.

in the forecourt of the Atsuta Jingū’s Kagura-den (神楽殿). The
beautiful, graceful performances, radiant beneath the fresh green
leaves of the shrine gardens, take the viewer into the world of a
Heian period picture scroll. The shrine priests, maidens and
members of Atsuta Jingu's Gagaku association perform authentic
Heian period Bugaku before the deities.
The collection in the shrine’s Treasure Exhibition Hall (文化殿)
features Bugaku masks, which are Important Cultural Properties,
thought to have been created during the Heian and Kamakura
periods.

Rail Mountain Bike Gattan Go!!
レールマウンテンバイク ガッタンゴー
Explore the countryside of Kamioka-chō, Hida City in Gifu Prefecture by bike and rail - at the same
time! The locals have turned a section of disused railway between the former Okuhida-Onsenguchi
Station and Kamioka-Kōzanmae Station into a unique attraction that lets you ride a mountain bike on
rails. Take in the rural scenery and fresh mountain air, and experience the thrill you can only get from
rails, travelling through pitch black tunnels and across bridges while clickety-clacking over the tracks.
A variety of rail mountain bikes are available to cater to families and groups including small children
and other non-riders. The 5.8km round-trip takes between 1 and 1.5 hours (including seat adjustment, etc.), with up to eight tours operating each day. Make a reservation to avoid disappointment.

Centered on the interior of what is now Cambodia, the Angkor kingdom wielded immense power over the 9th to
15th centuries. The Angkor kings constructed magnificent ornate stone temples (exemplified by the World
Heritage-listed Angkor Wat) and stone sculptures depicting the world of Hindu and Buddhist gods. This exhibition
follows the path from the time the region was divided into several smaller countries to the age of prosperity in
which Angkor Wat, worthy of being called a paradise to which gods descended, was constructed, through the
elegant sculptured art of this period. In addition, the exhibition will take you on a journey through the world of
rich art and history of Indochina; as well as the cluster of pre- and post-Angkor Wat ruins, the exhibition features
contemporaneous sculpture from Myanmar and Thailand.

Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art: The Golden Legend 愛知県美術館 「黄金伝説展」
Around 40 years ago, some 300 individual graves were discovered in the Bulgarian Black Sea
coastal city of Varna, and caused a sensation. An enormous amount of gold funerary artefacts
were excavated, which were revealed to have been produced during the Copper Age more
than 6,000 years ago, predating by far even the oldest of the Egyptian pyramids, and thus the
oldest gold in the world. Greek mythology tells of a hero on a boat traversing the notoriously
perilous strait of Bosphorus. Seeking a golden fleece, the ship sets sail toward the Black Sea
coast. The discovery at Varna provided evidence that this tale of the golden wealth of the Black
Sea was more than just a legend. This exhibition features a recreation of one of the Varna
graves, reconstructing the manner in which the interred individual was decorated with glittering
Gold funerary artefacts from No. 43 Grave,
gold and other adornments.

In addition, in the Mediterranean regions of Bulgaria and Italy, the ancient civilizations of
Varna Regional Museum of History, Bulgaria
Thrace, Etruria and Rome flourished. A number of gold masterpieces (some being exhibited
in Japan for the first time) born of these ancient cultures, as well as works of painted art and sculpture based on tales of gold from Greek
myths will also be on display, revealing the history of humankind's attraction to gold.

Yamazaki Mazak Museum of Art: Paris Master Aïzpiri - 80 Years of Art
開館6周年記念展「パリの巨匠 アイズピリ 描きつづけた80年」
The work of Paul Aïzpiri (born in Paris in 1919), with its characteristic bright colors and light touches, is familiar to
many in Japan. Yamazaki Mazak Corporation Chairman and first director of the Museum of Art Teruyuki
Yamazaki (1928-2011) shared a close friendship with Aïzpiri, collecting over 50 of the artist's works. The
collection, ranging from early work from the 1950s to 1989 and his later years, provides an extensive overview of
Aïzpiri's work by period.
Although the artist passed away in January this year at the age of 96, we can experience the world of Aïzpiri's
painting, overflowing with his playfulness, through this exhibition.

The International Speech Contest in Japanese has been held annually
since 1960, founded on the belief that awareness and appreciation of
our differences will lead to humanity’s peaceful coexistence and
development.
With the rapid progress of globalization, it is important to overcome
national and cultural differences, constructively exchange opinions,
and deepen mutual understanding to ensure the prosperous
development of our world. This contest provides people from all over
the world who feel a deep connection to Japanese society and culture
with the chance to give speeches in Japanese. It is an excellent
opportunity for both audience and presenters to obtain fresh
perspectives on the world around them. This year’s contest will be
held in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. Please visit the website below

The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the largest-scale
Japanese-language test for evaluating and certifying the Japanese
proficiency of non-native speakers in the world. Whether you’re
just curious about the level of your Japanese ability, or would like
certification of your Japanese skills as a qualification for future
employment, the JLPT is a good way to measure your Nihongo
skills.
The JLPT is conducted twice a year, in July and December. Applications for the July Test close on April 28, so if you’re thinking of
sitting the examination, it’s time to get your application together.
There are five levels of the test, from N5 through to N1 (N1 being
the most advanced). For more information on the JLPT, the
registration process, suggestions for textbooks to help you prepare,
and some sample questions to help you decide which level to aim

AGVS volunteer activities began in the fall of 2005 with
members who had served as volunteer interpreters for the 2005
World Exposition Aichi Japan. Services include;

2) Translators for websites, documents and academic reports.
3) Volunteer tour guides to facilities and sightseeing spots in and
