Editor: Neil Bird Tel: 01274 447315 Email: [email protected] Web: www.thorntondirectory.co.uk Last Year we held our first ever photo competition for our readers to win a professional 32GB SD card for their camera. The competition is a fun and rewarding way to encourage people to take notice, appreciate their surroundings and capture a moment in a photograph. The winner out of almost 50 entries, pictured on the cover of this month’s issue, was Mel Crossley with her photo of All Saints’ Church, Bingley. The judging panel from the Bradford Camera Club are ready for a healthy debate/ judging session to pick this years winner. The prize this year again is to see the winning photo on the cover of the Thornton Directory and also win a 32GB SD Card. This year’s SD card is a blisteringly fast professional grade card with a write speed of 150mb per second. Last year the write speed was 600x, this year its 1000x. This past month I have been doing some online learning. We are never too old to learn new skills. For me, I’m learning to play the guitar. The tips of my fingers are stinging and the stretching exercises are really hurting my hand. But the more I practice, the better I’m getting. I’m never going to learn to play in a matter of weeks, it’s going to take a long time, but I’m enjoying the challenge. I remember a quote that said ‘learn something new everyday’ and the age old classic ‘everyday is a school day’. What are you learning more about at the moment? This month I’m honoured to be able to launch a third publication for a community group. You can read more on this in the local news on pg8. Enjoy this month’s issue. Both myself and my children suffer from asthma and in summer we find it hard with breathing when the pollen levels are high. Breathing in smoke from fires only makes this worse. J. Dobson Thirkill, Thornton resident Editor: Any kind of bonfire could harm the environment and be bad for our health. But it is not against the law to have the occasional garden bonfire. However, under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, it is an offence to cause a statutory nuisance. This includes smoke, fumes or gases “emitted from premises so as to be prejudicial to health or a nuisance”. This can include nuisance created by bonfires. The council do have good practice guidelines on their website: www.bit.ly/1s1BbGd Alternatively to report a bonfire that is causing a nuisance go to: www.bit.ly/1WI9Vcj Dear Readers, I would like to thank everyone who bought plants from me in aid of Martin House children’s hospice. I will let you all know how much I raised in July’s Thornton Directory I’m now getting ready to start organising my Christmas fair in aid of Martin House children’s hospice but I am looking for a new venue because the Great Northern has closed if anyone knows of a possible venue please email me: [email protected] Many thanks, Joe Kemp Editor: Hi Joe, when you have some details for the Christmas Fair, get in touch and we’ll sort out the poster design for you. As for a new venue, hopefully someone reading this gets in touch with you with suggestions of a suitable venue. 4 Hello Neil, Can anything be done about the graffiti in the local park. Awareness at least in the directory. It’s all over all of the equipment and even my 4 year old can read a lot of it and said it made her sad and asked me if it was a ‘naughty park’ and if it was ‘safe’. Natalie Rees Editor: The photos you sent were obscene and sad to see. They were passed on to Cllr Richard Dunbar for his immediate attention. Within a week this was cleaned off. Let’s hope this sends the message that our park is important to us and damage won’t be tolerated. Get in touch and get in print. Tell me your views, your news or if you have any questions, I’d love to hear from you. Email / Facebook details above. Or you can drop off your letter at The Post Office on Kipping Lane. The question voters will be asked is: Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union? are not significant to make any kind of impact, they are not legally binding and the European Courts will likely backtrack on any negotiated deal. Each campaign has just £7m for their campaign material, free mailshot to British homes, TV broadcasts and additional public funds in the run up to the referendum. The main arguments for and against staying in the EU include, immigration, crime, trade, law, jobs and influence. The campaign groups provide opposite arguments. To help make an informed decision visit the two official campaign sites: Britain Stronger in Europe http://www.strongerin.co.uk Vote Leave, Take Control http://www.voteleavetakecontrol.org Two campaign groups have been set up and will provide every household with information for and against our EU membership. Britain Stronger in Europe has been chosen as the official Remain campaign, led by former M&S head Stuart Rose. The campaign is being reinforced by political and business leaders such as David Cameron, George Osbourne and Theresa May, and from the business world the likes of Sir Richard Branson and Baroness Karren Brady who say leaving Europe will only take us back 50 years and diminish Britain’s influence of World affairs. Vote Leave has been chosen as the official Leave campaign with a strong headline of ‘invest in the NHS’ is being led by Former London Lord Mayor, Boris Johnson. The 14 page text magazine for 30p was sponsored by local business adverts and kindly printed by K.J. Abrahams on Green Lane. Useful information about most local groups completed the directory. Having started with nothing, Thornton Gala in 1990 made a profit. This was shared between several local groups, a family made homeless by fire and a float towards the 1991 festival. Carnival Queen was Sarah Smith. South Square – the dilapidated stone workers cottages restored in 1985 had created a Community Arts & Craft Centre with gallery, craft shop and vegetarian cafe. Brontë birthplace – recently restored, hoped to attract more tourists. Bringing home the Brontës – part of Bradford Festival in September. A re-enactment of the Brontës’ 6.5 mile journey to Haworth reversed to end at Thornton. Actors invited community groups to walk or ride the route on carts, stopping to celebrate in villages along the way. ‘Thornton Association for the Elderly’ kept a register for volunteers to keep a friendly eye on those aged 65+ living between the Tyke and Brown Cow. Collection boxes in pubs and shops helped provide Coop Christmas gift vouchers for those listed. Derby & Joan club met at the community centre with Hilda Sanders. Thornton Bowling Green and Tennis Courts – hired bowls at 70p for an hour of exercise and company. Senior wayfarers offered the retired a 5 mile walk each week to keep fit and make friends. Branwell House Film Group - in existence for 12 years, (started as a camera and cine club) had their own small cinema and now included video films. Thornton Players - treading the boards since 10 the early 70’s had won a cup in the Bradford Festival. Productions were normally held at the Church Hall (St James). British Legion Thornton had 60+ members – ex-servicemen and women creating regular meetings, engaging in social events, fundraising for charity and helping ex-service personnel in difficulties. Thornton Scout Group (for boys) at Royd Mount middle school hoped to start a Beaver Group. Leader: Nick Mortimer. Advertisers included: Market Street traders - K.J. Abrahams printers – letterheads to wedding stationery; Geoff Drake joiner & builder; John G Widdop, Bakers, Confectioners & Caterers; Kay Kreams buns to banquets; Forget-me-not Cards & Gifts; Thornton Pets & Gardens; Thornton Parsonage Restaurant, serving traditional English fayre; Jim Nichols family butcher est. 1880; Thornton Lodge Childcare and new after school service; C J Taylor at Thornton Post Office for car tax & fancy goods; H Ambler & Sons butchers & suppliers of speciality pies. The theme this year is covering all aspects of Thornton History. A very special feature will be a scale model of Thornton Railway Station 1878-1963. Made by Andrew Hodgson of Brisbane Australia, and donated to Thornton for all the happy times he spent growing up in Thornton village. Viewers can not fail to be impressed by his attention to detail. After the event the model will be on permanent display in the showroom window of Simmonites on Thornton Road, not far from the original Railway Station site. Mark Calzoni (Director) remarked that David Simmonite, would have been delighted with the opportunity to preserve such an important part of Thornton History, being a proud Thorntonian. Do you have fond memories of travelling by train in Thornton? If you have stories or even photos of the station, please come and share them with us at our Open Day. Please mention the Thornton Directory when responding to adverts 17 Part 3 of a 6 part series by Robert Brown One exciting call-to-arms involved something white being spotted falling from an aircraft! It later turned out that a pilot, flying from the AVRO factory at Yeadon (now Leeds/Bradford Airport) had simply dropped the wrappers from his fish and chips! Other observation posts were located on the roofs of The United States Metallic Packing Company, Soho Works (now demolished), on Allerton Road, at the bottom of Squire Lane, and of AIS Ltd (also demolished) in Cemetery Road. One HG centre was the old Isolation Hospital (now demolished) on Back Lane, Thornton. Though I’m not sure of its exact use by the Home Guard. Nearby (exactly where?) was an Observation Corps post, and the HG trained their staff, plus members of the Civil Defence Corps, in small arms drill (but to what purpose?). The executive HG headquarters were based in Cumberland House, Greenside Lane, off Cemetery Road (known as the “stuffed bird house” to us kids, as it had stuffed birds under glass domes in the hall). But the real hub was Downs Coulters mill (now demolished), in West Lane, Thornton. An indoor small arms range was installed there, enabling HG 18 members to acquire expert skills in shooting, and many other facilities were provided. As all the men were local, they had an excellent knowledge of paths, roads and buildings, plus, knowing very many of the residents, any likely “spies” would be easy to spot. These attributes were ideal for the HG, so that, with a bit of extra training in map reading, signalling (by whatever means – Morse code by buzzer or lamp, or by semaphore or phone) and by camouflage and weapons skills, they became a truly formidable force. Happily, but perhaps regretfully, these skills were never put to a real test. A disused quarry (now filled in), beside the footpath linking Deep Lane (Clayton) with Leaventhorpe Lane was developed as a 25yard range. Where pistols, 0.22” rifles, Sten guns, Tompson sub-machine guns (“Tommy guns”), Verey pistols and phosphorus grenades were used. Self-help allowed a simple “pop-up” miniature target system to be constructed, using old scaffolding poles. Here the writer, aged under ten, fired his very first 0.22” rounds! My brother and I appear in the Home Guard Film (mentioned in a later issue), though, depending on the commentator (the film is silent), we’re either vandals about to wreck this local range or, correctly, Major Brown’s two sons. A lot more melody than I expected from a traditional indie album, not being a fan of indie bands like Nirvana or Primal Scream, I was surprised by the lighter mood of the songs. From the start, the 80’s sound of this indie rock band had my foot tapping whilst putting together this month’s Thornton & Queensbury Directories. The electronic elements with the rock instrument sounds worked brilliantly together. The lyrics in particular were positive and uplifting. The tracks on repeat in the car are the opening title ‘Stomp’, track 2 ‘Horizons’, track 5 ‘The Long Kiss Goodbye’ and track 10 ‘Rise Again’. The quality of the recordings were clear, yet still hold on to the live essence of the music, so thumbs up to the recording bloke with headphones on, nice work. It’s a great album from start to finish. Well done guys. Recorded in their own Thornton Road studios, with the financial assistance from Brighouse business Arkoni, the album features a self produced, eclectic mix of tracks that have been written and performed over the past five years since their inception. Support our local musicians and download their album from iTunes or for more info and live performance dates visit the band’s website: www.kascarade.com 21 Community Updates The Rotary Club of Bradford West The auction on Saturday 7th May raised a staggering £2,132.50. If you donated or visited the auction can we say a great big Thank You. This profit will go into the charity account of the club with grateful thanks to all the members for the sterling work they put in to make this a huge success. The aim of Rotary is “Service Above Self” and the members are constantly finding ways of helping others and serving our community. The chairman of the community committee, Tony Caunt wanted to extend this to Keelham Primary School and in discussion with Miss Debra Butler, the head teacher, they have organised a Summer Concert with the school choir and Thornton Singers. This will be held at Haworth Road Methodist Church, Bradford BD9 on Wednesday 22nd June, 22 commencing at 7pm there will be a wide selection of songs from both Thornton Singers and Keelham children. Tickets are £7 to include refreshments and there will be a £1 lucky programme for many excellent prizes. Proceeds will go to the school for much needed IT equipment. Tickets available from Keelham School: 01274 832491, Thornton Singers: 07503 956 560 or Tony Caunt: 01535 273709 Wednesday 8th June is the charity golf day at Northcliffe Golf Course. £50 per golfer to include a round, lunch and dinner. On Saturday 11th June there will be a Sue Ryder Hog Roast & Live Music event, 6pm to late. Tickets: adult £12, under 16 £6, with children’s fun and games in the afternoon from 2pm in celebration of The Queen’s 90 birthday. This will take place at Niffany Farm, Broughton Road, Skipton BD23 3AA by the side of the canal. You can also come and meet members of the Rotary Club in the royal blue gazebo at The Queensbury 1940’s day on Saturday 18th June. Then on Sunday 3rd July you can see us at Wilsden Gala. On Thursday 9th June at The Raggalds Inn there will be a speech by Rtn. James Furgusson “Granpa was a guest of the Kaiser” the speaker’s family in Germany in the early 20th century. On the day itself in April we sent 4 children over to Stanbury Primary school to join their celebration in the unveiling of their 90th birthday plaque that is similar to the one we have in our garden at school. The Lord Major was in attendance as were children from Haworth Primary. It was a very special occasion and the children enjoyed being part of something so memorable. You may have seen the picture in the local paper? Then at the end of the week when year 6 children had worked so hard on their SATS test we held a Queen’s Birthday Tea Party. Everyone dressed in their finest clothes, fit for the queen, and the playground was decorated with donated flowers and plants to form a royal garden. Mr. Morrison had been working through the year with the children on various musical pieces and the parents and friends invited enjoyed a varied few minutes of entertainment before heading into the classroom for afternoon tea with the children. We had a visit too from our local “Queen for the Day” Mrs Dorothy Powell (nee Warton) who has lived in Keelham all her life. She is not quite as old as the queen but has a long association with the school and even lived in the old school house (which is now our administration area) when she was caretaker here. She was accompanied in her duties by her “ladies in waiting”, her great nieces, who are pupils at the school. Her duties included judging a Corgi Dog Show! The children had decorated their paper corgis and paraded them around to impress the queen. It was a lovely afternoon, even if the weather was typical for Keelham….with a strong north wind blowing through! Hopefully these sorts of events will stay with the children for many years to come. We have also had a knock on our door from a past pupil and her family. Sheila Tidswell arrived out of the blue from Barnsley to visit her old school. She is now 82! Dorothy Powell came over to meet her and they both had a great chat catching up on the old days and life at Keelham during the war. Some of our readers may remember those times and names too. Let’s hope that in 50 years our children today will still be talking to their grandchildren about their days at Keelham when the queen turned 90. Debra Butler, Head Teacher Please mention the Thornton Directory when responding to adverts 23 Community Updates Sapgate Gardens “Someone should do something!” How often have we heard that cry as we pass derelict land and fly tipping in our area? This particular eyesore, well known to local dogs, is between Sapgate and Havelock in Thornton and thanks to tireless community activists Jenny Oliver, Julie Fearnhead and friends, a group of us are going to do something. Jenny and Julie had tremendous support from our local councillors and got an agreement to circulate a questionnaire gauging local interest in creating allotments and community garden. 102 questionnaires were returned and over half of the respondents wanted to be part of this exciting scheme. 18 months before real progress can be seen. Meanwhile we shall be holding meetings on the first Tuesday of the month. The next one to be held on Tuesday 7th June 7pm at South Square, Thornton. Please come along if you want to be part of this exciting local initiative. For more information contact: Christine Clavering (chair) [email protected]; Janice Dobbin (secretary) [email protected] or Alex Dilger [email protected] After just two meetings, guided by Community Development Worker Alex Dilger, the council have agreed to lease the land to a constituted community association, and so was born the Sapgate Gardens Association, with an elected management committee and a draft constitution. Now the real work starts. We will have to raise funds to transform the area into fertile gardens producing fruit and vegetables for the local community. We will have to agree plans encompassing everyone’s vision, from private allotments to communal vegetable beds and tranquil gardens. It is not an easy task and we expect to be working on this for 24 Please mention the Thornton Directory when responding to adverts Community Updates Email: [email protected] Facebook: Thornton & Queensbury Directory Thornton & Denholme Medical Centre For 4 years we have had a system where patients can speak to an on call doctor about any problem any time of the day. Last month we changed the system and introduced a rapid access clinic. This will increase the number of face to face appointments for patients and help us to organise the working day better for patients and staff. Changes to our Appointment System Urgent Problems: If you have an urgent problem that needs dealing with that day please telephone the practice between 8.30am and 9.30am and ask for the rapid access clinic. The doctor will deal with your problem over the phone and offer advice, prescriptions, referral or a same day appointment as clinically appropriate. Routine Appointments: For routine appointments you can still prebook up to 6 weeks in advance with the doctor of your choice, subject to availability, including on the day if we have free appointments. Medical Emergencies: If you do not have an appointment between 9.30am and 6pm we will deal with medical emergencies only. A doctor will be available by phone to deal with these if they arise. These changes are needed as a way for us to manage increasing demand on our service and to try and prioritise our scarce doctor resources to those people who are in most need of that expertise. Thank you for working with us during this change and supporting our staff implement this new appointment system. Tom was an overseer of the highways of Clayton and an employer of local labour, with his farm workers and malthouse employees, the malthouse being adjoined to the house. He was also a warden of the chapel at Thornton. The next Hirst to reside at Clayton House was Mr. John Hirst, who gave the land for the Parish Church to be built, after having allowed his house to be used for worship when Clayton first became a parish. He died in 1852, the year after the church was opened. John Hirst’s brother, Thomas and his wife Sarah lived at Low House, near the Clayton/Shelf border, formerly known as “Brightwaters”. This had been the ancestral home of the Hirst family since the early 17th century, where they combined farming and cloth making. Mr & Mrs. Hirst were the main contributors to the building of the Old Dolphin Wesleyan chapel at Clayton Heights Later in the 19th century their son Joseph Hirst resided at Low House and his brother, Lt. Colonel Henry Sagar Hirst, at nearby Westwood House. They were the proprietors of Low House brewery for many years before it was sold to Bentlevs Breweries. In 1918 Bradford Corporation acquired Westwood House for hospital purposes and Low House was later demolished, the last occupants having been Joseph and his family. Before becoming a brewer, Henry Sagar Hirst trained as a solicitor after being privately 28 educated. As a young man he had joined the Volunteer Movement and received his commission as an ensign in September 1859. Three years later he was appointed a lieutenant-colonel commanding the Third West Yorkshire Rifle volunteers (The Bradford Rifles). In 1881 he received the title of Companion of the Bath for services rendered to the volunteer movement and when he resigned his commission in 1890 he was made honorary colonel of the battalion. In 1864 he married Sarah, daughter of John Foster of Hornby Castle, founder of Black Dyke Mills. He was president of the West Riding Rifles Association, master of the Clayton Harriers and captain of the Bradford cricket team. He was a faithful member of Clayton Parish Church and one of its most generous benefactors. He played an active part in local affairs and, along with his wife, gave generously to the poor of the parish. He was a chairman of the District Council, a manager of the school and President of the Board of Surveyors. Colonal Hirst died in 1899 and is buried in Clayton churchyard. There is a tablet to his memory inside the church. This team showing again, they just do not know when they are beaten. Having defeated heavy favourites Queensbury, 26-6, in the semi-finals, Clayton knew they would again have to raise the bar to a new level, playing against a side two divisions above them and a side who would clearly strengthen and bring back all supposed ‘big game players’. Clayton were able to name a strong 17, however they were missing the physical presence of Danny Murgatroyd, Barry Coombes and Christian Wooler. Fitness was likely to be key, with Clayton’s last league game over four weeks prior to the final. On reflection of the first half, the mood was clear. Despite not playing anywhere near the capabilities previously shown this season, somehow Clayton still found themselves well in the game. Positive words were exchanged and Clayton knew they had to come out and give it everything. Within 5 minutes, those thoughts of success seemed a distant dream, as after breaking through the middle, the ball was shipped wide and with an overlap created, a further try was conceded. At 6-16, 36 they had it all to do. From then on, a ‘never say die’ attitude seemed to come to the fore. The team was visibly lifted and Clayton took the fight to Vic’s. After a period of sustained pressure, Parkinson battered his way over the tryline, taking a short ball close to the line and carrying several would be tacklers with him. The tension was becoming unbearable and the potential for extra time due to a series of penalties was more and more likely. After a sharp offload in the tackle, Gurney was caught late and high, and a penalty was awarded for Clayton. A yellow card was also brandished, as a result of persistent penalties and Clayton had the one chance they craved. Central, but at least 45 metres out, Wilkinson decided he would have a shot at the goal. The wind was against him, but with oozing confidence, despite the earlier miss, he stroked the ball between the uprights. Scarcely believable, but with less than three minutes remaining and Clayton had hit the front for the first time. A short kick off was attempted unsuccessfully and showing remarkable composure, Clayton managed to wind down the remaining minutes without even allowing their opponents another opportunity to see the ball. Victory was secured amid heroic celebrations and the nigh on impossible, was achieved. This team had secured something truly special and the Bradford Cup Trophy, was coming home.
