A new year brings with
it
fresh
starts,
new
year
resolutions
and
reaffirmations of love for
one another come to mind
when we hear Big Ben ring
in the new year. Some of you
may have even proposed to
your loved one.
I wonder how many of us will
make the fresh commitment
to get in shape, lose weight,
change career path, attend
college or start a new hobby.
We all know that fitness
gyms see their busiest
membership subscriptions
start in the first week of
January. Most don’t make
it through the year but the
intentions were good.
How about you start
something new that you can
easily achieve. May be it’s
to eat more vegetables and
less chips. Change your blue
milk for green milk. Not for
me though... I love the blue
milk.
Anyway, the new year
should be a time where we
refocus our energies on the
things we want for ourselves
and those close to us.
For me and my wife, we
are looking forward to the
new year in our new home.
January should be a time to
drive on with new energy
and new projects, for my
wife and I it’s about lifting
a load of stuff up out of the
way and into the attic and
about numerous furniture
layouts until things start
looking right.
This month we announce
the first of our two charities,
which we will be supporting
through 2016. The Donkey
Sanctuary based in Leeds
is one of the charities we
will support with advert
space and articles. I have a
huge admiration for animal
shelters know of local
children who are helped by
their sessions here.
Also in this months issue, we
have a historical reflection
article on Prospect Mill.

Hi Thornton Directory readers
I would like to thank everyone who helped
me with the Christmas Fair and I would like
to thank everyone who had a stall and all the
local business and everyone who donated
prizes for the raffle and I would also like to
thank the Great Northern Hotel for letting us
have the Christmas fair there last month.
The Christmas fair was great. Despite the
weather there was a great turnout. So far it
has raised £640 for Martin House Children’s
Hospice.
I will let you know the grand total in
February’s issue.
Thanks,
Joe Kemp
Editor: Great to hear! Martin House relies
almost entirely on donations & fundraising
to provide care & support for children with
progressive life limiting illnesses & their
families. Your commitment to fundraise for
them is amazing. Keep us posted on all that
you have planned for 2016.
Dear Editior,
The ‘Plan It’ Newsletter is out now with
updates on the Local Development Plan
affecting our green field areas. Not sure how
and if the Council will do anything more to
make the document more readily available
for Public consumption and awareness of
what is going on.
It is a very important issue for local residents
and the reproduction of my articles in the
Thornton Directory on this subject have
been invaluable in raising public awareness
and I would welcome any suggestions you
may have for using the Directory again for
that purpose.
Cllr Malcolm Sykes
Editor: No problem. We have posted this
document link on our Facebook page and
4
on the Thornton Village page for people to
download.
Hello Neil,
After a really mild few months I can’t believe
the weather we’ve had in December. I felt
sad for the organisers of Clayton Dickensian
Market after the stormy winds changed the
plans of all their hard work over the past year.
Well done on ‘keeping calm and carrying
on’. We still enjoyed a festive afternoon,
great lunch and actually got to see venues
in Clayton we wouldn’t normally have. Well
done and fingers crossed for being back to
full steam next year.
Sandra, Thornton resident.
Editor: The orgainsers on the day did well
keeping things going. While the event was
scaled back it was still a great afternoon out.
Next time, let’s put our orders in for a good
weather day.
I’d love to hear from you. Tell me your
views, your news or if you have any
questions... please do get in touch.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL
This is the second year we have undertaken
a Charity Christmas Tree Festival, which once
again has been an extremely successful
event. We would like to thank all the
sponsors, helpers, visitors, charities and
support organisations, without which this
event would not have been possible.
With 47 decorated Christmas Trees
representing 43 different charities and local
groups, these were further enhanced by
additional lighting which gave the church a
spirit of joy and happiness.
Some comments made in the visitors book
were:
‘What a super way to start the
Christmas season’
‘ A magical experience’
‘Well worth repeating, looking forward to
next year’
The combined total for all the charities was
£3832, which represents an increase of more
than 25% on last years total.
With over 3000 visitors during the week
and parties from three schools the church
was very busy and was open to the local
community and beyond.
This is a tremendous result that we could
not have achieved without the support of so
many people, so a very big thank you to all
who supported the event in any way.
With best wishes for all in 2016.

PANTOMIME FUNDS RAISED
Thornton Methodist Church’s Pantomime
raised £378.33 for the Food Bank and Hope
Housing. Many thanks to the local businesses
who supported us and all those who came
and saw the performance. Look out for
another performance next Christmas!
A BRONTË WEDDING
Brontë fans were treated to a step back in
time to the 1800s, to when Charlotte Brontë
married her sweetheart Arthur Bell Nicholls.
Captured on film by the BBC, the reenactment filmed at Haworth Parish Church
last month, is for a series titled ‘Living
like a Brontë’ which is due to be shown
in the Spring, as part of the Brontë 200th
Anniversary. For the BBC this is part of a
longer season of programmes looking at
classic literature. The BBC’s classic literature
season will celebrate the work of other
famous authors including Rudyard Kipling,
Roald Dahl and Shakespeare.
Another TV special to look out for in 2016 is
a two-hour drama titled “To Walk Invisible:
The Brontë Sisters“ which is currently
in production, written and directed by
multi-award-winning (Halifax-born) Sally
Wainwright (Happy Valley, Last Tango In
Halifax). Sally said “I am thrilled beyond
measure that I’ve been asked by the BBC to
bring to life these three fascinating, talented,
ingenious Yorkshire women.”

Propsect Mill ~ By Lynn Wardman
Unlike many mills, the sandstone extension
of Prospect Mills fronting Thornton Road was
iconic, listed, and worthy of adopting into
any future development. Carved aloft on
a stone wall plaque was the date 1855 and
the symbolic Bradford fleece, with a grand
lamp hung alongside. With the construction
skills of hoards of men and extraordinary
visionaries, the main part of the mill reaching
down the deep valley side is now visible. The
revolution from cottage industry to mass
employment and financial success, led to
many developments, but the presence of
this mill and its original owners, significantly
changed the surrounding area.
During an 1853 health inspection of squalid
conditions in the village, new housing
for the mill workers attracted favourable
comments. Industry Street, Commercial
Street and the Athenaeum all belonging to
Joseph Craven, plus the new large Prospect
and Dole Mills, were noted as being of very
superior description, constituting almost the
only commendable features of the village.
In times of drought, it was these mills and
Ashfield House that offered villagers a life
saving supply of fresh water.
In short, it was Joshua Craven a local ‘master’
of handloom weavers who built Prospect
Mills to manufacture cloth using power
looms, extending later into wool processing
and spinning. The mill, and Kipping Chapel
across the road, where he served as Deacon,
dominated the area. Despite intentions to
join the medical profession, son Joseph later
ran the mill. Dedicated to improving local
educational and leisure facilities and raising
aspirations, he gifted land and money to
build the Mechanics Institute next to the
chapel, later adding a Lecture Hall (which
became ‘The Cinema’). He also provided land
for Thornton Grammar School opposite the
8
mill and set up various scholarships for the
education of local youngsters. He granted
the land and donations to build New Road
Congregational Church, now the site of
Kipping Gardens. All of these areas still
provide Thornton with facilities of benefit to
the community, including the Community
and Medical Centres. On completion of St
James church, Messrs Craven & Son (Joshua
& Joseph) who had a mill in Thornton were
listed as benefactors.
Home was at Ashfield House and as a
member and chairman of Thornton Local
Board Mr Craven had a strong influence in
most aspects of village life. After retirement,
Joseph became Liberal MP for Shipley and
contributed huge sums toward building
Bradford Infirmary. Philanthropic and
commercial links were also shared with
the merchants who built Little Germany,
established Bradford Chamber of Commerce
and Bradford Technical College.
Opposite the mill, between chapel and
community centre is Craven Avenue
in recognition of their contributions to
Thornton.
More on the Craven family, Dole Mill and
Harrop House on Ball Street, can be found
in: Alan Whitworth’s ‘History of Thornton’; in
the ‘Thornton Road’ publication by Thornton
Antiquarian
Society
which
includes
memories and anecdotes; and W Sutcliffe’s

December saw another “first” for the group,
with us being privileged to join the St
James’s Church Christmas tree display for
the first time. The kind donations from locals
and visitors alike were most appreciated,
we thank you for your continued support.
Additionally we would like to thank the
organisers for giving us this fantastic
opportunity, our Beavers and Cubs for their
festive decorations (in our Group Colours of
course), whilst not forgetting Pete and Sally
Wilkinson for their help in co-ordinating the
display.
As 2016 looms it is a particularly exciting
year for our Cubs section (aged 8-10½),
10
who will next year be celebrating the 100th
Anniversary since the Cub section was
formed. A number of activities within the
group, district and county are planned for
our members. A number of spaces will soon
become available in January for this section
should your son or daughter be interested in
starting the New Year with a new hobby as a
number of existing members move onto the
Scout section. Please contact ste_preston@
hotmail.com for further details.
Whilst the Christmas break gives the
leadership the opportunity of a short break,
I’m sure for most of us this brief pause will
include just a little planning for what we
hope will be an equally successful 2016 – now
where did I leave that Campsite Directory!

Thornton Singers
By the time you read this Christmas will be
well and truly over. Too much turkey, too
many mince pies and chocolates, too many
sherries but, never too much of family and
friends. The spirit of Christmas is all about love
and sometimes in the commercialisation of it
and the rush, rush, rush of life you sometimes
forget how important this is. We’ve been rushing about as well but most
of Thornton Singers members are now off
for a well earned break before restarting
later in January for rehearsals for our Spring/
Summer concerts. I say most of our members
because our music committee will be busy
selecting the music for our new season. We
started rehearsing our Christmas selection
way back in September, it did seem funny
singing songs like Let it Snow, and Christmas
carols when the sun was shining brightly.
12
The spring season isn’t too bad as the
programme seems to be more relevant.
Our concerts were a great success in 2015
and, more recently, our performance for
Manorlands in December, with children
from St Johns C of E Primary School in
East Bierley, supported by Rotary Club and
their Manorlands volunteer group helped
raise over £2000. Also a stalwart group of
choir members raised over £200 singing
at Morrisons one cold and damp Saturday
morning for Marie Cure.
If you think Thornton Singers could help
your charity or church you can contact us by

by calling us on: 07503956560.
Thank you to all Thornton Directory readers

Denholme Film Night
We are a group of local people who love
films and wanted to restore cinema to our
village. The original cinema in the Mechanics
Institute closed in 1957, we felt it was time to
bring it back. This was just one of lots of ideas
suggested by the local community as a way
of tackling loneliness in our village. We think
it works, but please come along and try it out
for yourself.

Happy Memories of
Christmas at Keelham 2015/6
In the dark mornings and winter days of
January when wet playtime happens too
often and spring seems a long way away, it
is good to remember the many Christmas
events that brightened up our school in
December.
I have added lots of photos that really tell
the whole story, from Christmas lunch
to Christmas shows and the traditional
Nativity play. Our younger children lead the
entertainment in December and the year 1-2
class told the great tale of “Santa on Strike” to
families and friends. They were all amazingsinging with enjoyment and telling the
story with confidence and fun. For children
so young they show so much talent and
enthusiasm, we were all very proud.
Our Foundation unit did not let anyone
down and Mr Arundale our new teacher had
worked very hard with everyone to produce
a beautiful nativity with the children,
involving everyone in nursery and reception.
The children were complete stars and for
many it was the true start of the Christmas
celebrations. The children really understood
the story they were telling too.
School looked lovely decorated throughout
and all the children were involved in carol
singing and parties, with Santa visiting on the
very last day of term. Our choir led singing
at our carol service in St James’ Church and
year 6 dramatised a poem showing the
many different sides to Christmas. The choir
also performed at the church during the
tree festival and entertained members of
the Rotary club at their Christmas lunch. In
and amongst we all found time to go to the
Pantomime in Halifax!
So, many happy memories made by and
for the children at Keelham School. I hope
the pictures go some way to sharing those
memories with you. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Supported Charity for 2016
Email: [email protected] Facebook: Thornton & Queensbury Directory
The Donkey Sanctuary
The Donkey Sanctuary was founded in
1969 by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen, MBE. She
dedicated her life to champion donkeys, and
it is through her devotion that the Sanctuary
grew to be the international charity it is
today.
Sadly Dr Svendsen passed away in 2011 but
her memory lives on in our work, as does
her eternal motto that, in everything we do,
donkeys will always come first, second and
third.
During the last 45 years, we have made a
profound difference to the lives of donkeys
and people all over the world. This is down
to the drive and belief of our wonderful
Founder and all of our supporters for your
devotion and continued support.
The charity gives over 50,000 donkey
16
assisted therapy sessions a year. Through
these projects in the UK and overseas we
improve the lives of children and adults with
additional needs immeasurably.
Our donkeys also benefit from the stimulation
and contact that comes from interaction with
children and adults.
The children who attend the centres have
a wide range of additional needs and
disabilities and may have difficulties with
physical, social or behavioural interactions.
Our donkeys help children achieve success
on each of their journeys through social and
physical achievements. If you know someone
who would benefit, then call the team on
0113 261 9249. For more information visit
their website: thedonkeysanctuary.org.uk
Next month we will announce our second
selected charity that we will be supporting
during 2016.

Wrap Yourself In Love
We are just a group of friends that want to
leave a legacy. Whether that is big or small,
we want to make some difference to this big
and beautiful world. May be you can help
too?
It’s all pretty simple really. We collect coats
that people no longer want or need, that are
in good condition, take them to the streets of
Bradford city, meet with the homeless, chat
with them and give out coats and supplies.
We were worried that we wouldn’t be able
to get enough coats to meet demand. How
wrong we were. The love and care of our
wonderful community has ensured that is
not a problem at all. We have been given so
many coats so far, it has been truly humbling
to see such generosity. That said, we are still
desperately in need of men’s coats, hats,
scarves, gloves, and sleeping bags.
To every single one of you that ransacked
wardrobes, cupboards and coat hooks we
thank you. We thank you for making this
happen. Because of you somebody might
just stay warm tonight and through the cold
winter months, and know that they are not
alone because you are thinking of them.
It just might be that you are the reason that
somebody stays wrapped in love this winter.

Bradford Camera Club
Make your New Years’ Resolution to join The
Bradford Camera Club (BCC).
Exciting times are afoot as we start having our
meetings in our new venue, The Cottingley
Cornerstone Centre, Littlelands, Cottingley
BD16 1AL. We meet every Thursday evening
and provide help and guidance to anyone
who has an interest in photography, both
established and newcomers, who want to
learn more and join in this friendly club.
BCC has been in the centre of the city from
1932 when Joe and Mabel Bruce formed
The Cycle Folio Group using plate cameras
and cycling out into the Dales to make
pictures. Jo and Mabel opened their first
photographic shop in 1936 which was called
The Bradford Camera Exchange located at
19 North Parade, Bradford and is still going
strong today.
In its 84th year, President Judy Caunt is
looking forward to developing the BCC
as the new camera club. With a wealth of
knowledge learned over many years and
eager to pass on to anyone who has a
camera and is not sure how to use it or is
wanting to expand his or her knowledge
and move on to taking better images. We
will cater for a wide variety of interests from
pictorial to portrait, natural history, record
and sports / photojournalism. We will have
lectures on ‘Photoshop’, competitions and
guest speakers, so come along and find out
more.
All our January dates are in the What’s On
section. We look forward to meeting you.

Rotary Club
of Bradford West
Well, here we are in January,
so can I wish you all A Very Happy New Year
from all at Bradford West Rotary Club.
You may have visited St James’ Church,
Thornton to see the wonderful Christmas
Tree Festival of 47 trees decorated by many
charities. The Rotary tree (pictured) was in
the centre of the church and we shared it
with the pupils of Keelham Primary School
who made stars with their own picture in
the middle. At the time of writing I haven’t
got a final figure of how much was donated
but whatever it is will go towards Keelham’s
fund raising effort to improve their upper
playground where £18,000 is the target.
Miss Butler, the head teacher, took 20
children to Sandal Farm Restaurant to
entertain the Rotary Christmas lunch where
they sang carols and Christmas songs on
12th December. The school also filled 48
Shoe Boxes for children in Eastern Europe
along with Wilsden Primary, Harden Primary,
Carleton Bolling College and Menston
Cub Scouts who contributed to filling over
270 boxes. The members and friends also
collected “Sox and Chocs” for the Bradford
Soup Run and also teachers from Beck Foot
College collected dozens more wooly socks
and chocolates. Our community committee
collected a huge amount of toys from Russell
Hall Primary, Shibden Head Academy and
Queensbury School who were wonderful
this year and contributed Christmas gifts to
The Bradford Toy Library based in St. Luke’s
Hospital and the Joshua Project. Programme for January is not finalised as I go
to print but I can mention that on Thursday
7th January instead of the usual members’
lunch it will a lunch to celebrate Horace
Carter’s 100th birthday. Horace has been one
of the guests of the Contact the Elderly group
of Rotary for the past five years where people
who don’t get out much or are on their own,
are taken for tea, cakes and sandwiches every
second Sunday in the month to a member’s
home. The Lord Mayor of Bradford will be
gracing the party to celebrate with Horace
and his family. We will hold our annual Sports Personality
Dinner at Sandal farm on Tuesday
19th January 6.45pm for 7.30pm with Dean
Windass, ex-Bradford City and comedian
Martin Gold. Tickets £30.

Winter Writing Award Winners:
Phase 2 winner – A short descriptive piece
about a winter forest by Charlie Barker in
Year 6.
Icy winds smashed against the silky leafless
twigs.
The wood was as cold as loneliness!
Small saplings sprout out of the ground like
zombie hands waiting to pull unsuspecting
hikers under the frosty fur of a polar bear’s
back!
This forest seems charming, but it’s actually
a hallway of booby-traps covered in ice and
snow.
Although there is danger, there is also beauty:
like the pillow-soft melody of the pale moonlike birds that are all perched precariously on
the naked trees.
20
Phase 1 winner: A short Christmas story by
Karan Basra in Year 2.
One day, in a frosty, icy grotto there lived a
magical man. His name was Santa and he was
getting changed into his cherry-red clothes.
Until he heard an elf say that his flight was
delayed. So he called friend to help.
Suddenly, Santa’s friend crashed!
Santa said, “You’ve disappointed me. You’re
fired!”
Santa’s friend felt very sad. But then he had a
fabulous idea.
He thought to himself, “I could build a rocket.”
So he did.
He went to his big, dusty garage and soon
it was complete. Then he tested it and it
worked.
He delivered all the presents and Santa was
impressed. They flew all Christmas Eve and
they lived happily ever after.

18th JULY 1871 A serious accident took place
on Saturday, to a man called Daniel Whaley,
in the woolcombing room at Joseph Benn
& Co. The machines in the room had been
stopped at a quarter to one as was custom,
to clean the machines prior to leaving work.
The shafting was still running, when for an
unaccountable reason the machine restarted,
and in doing so, tore off the poor mans left
arm by the elbow and also removed some
fingers from his right hand. It was assumed
that he had not completely thrown off the
driving belt, but his prostration was so great
after the occurence as to render him unable
to account for it.
