DCH Appeal
As we rapidly approach the end of 2012, and shake our heads in wonder at how quickly time has gone past, we would
like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for being a member of the Savages family. Without
the participation, support and enthusiasm shown by you, we would not be the Club that we are today.
The Savages Member Incentive League has just concluded its first year. We have a few teething problems to work
through, but all in all I think a very successful initiative which has certainly encouraged members to participate in
events which they would not normally participate.
The Izaka Savages Challenge was also an extremely successful event this year, thanks to the hard work by the race
committee, the members that volunteered to assist on the day and especially to Mike for his sponsorship.
We welcome a number of new members to the club, and we also welcome back some old members who ventured out
into the big wide world and then realised that Savages was where they wanted to be.
We would also like to wish Greg and Sue everything of the best as they embark on their married life together early in
January.
Finally, we would like to wish each of you, and your families a blessed Christmas and great prosperity for the new
year.
From
The Savages Committee.

Sani Stagger 2012
This year, Savages had 6 athletes participating in the Sani Stagger - 2 in the 42km challenge and 4 in
the 21 km challenge.
Big congratulations must go out to Clive Hockley for his time of 4:56:38 in the 42 km event and to Graham Linley for his time of 2:52:40 in the 21km event. It should also be noted that Graham was first in
his age category of 70 - 79 years.
Michelle Bradfield had an nasty fall during the race and unfortunately had to withdraw. (The real story is
that Robin was afraid Michelle would beat him so he pushed her over the edge! LOL)

Savages Annual Pub to Pub Run
The Annual Pub to Pub run took place on Thursday 29 November.
Savages visited 5 pubs: Flagons and Dragons, Jack Rabbits, Taco
Zulu, Zacks and back to Flagons before returning to the Club for
some delicious snacks to mop up the alcohol.
A great evening was had by everyone.
Thanks to Robin for liaising with the pubs and Debbie for the
snacks.

Savages Christmas Party
The Savages Christmas Party was held on the 7th December 2012. Wow, what an amazing job was done by Debbie,
Doreen and Charmaine to set the venue up and get us all into the Christmas Spirit.
Well done Ladies!
This year Savages had an impressive turnout of members and friends attending the party - 74 people, which is a great
increase on last year and an even greater increase on previous years.
The Christmas party was held at Blue Zoo who prepared delicious food - the provided an impressive variety of dishes
which were all extremely tasty and reminiscent of meals made “just
like granny made”.
A number of awards were made:

Illovo Christmas Run
The annual Illovo Christmas Run was held on the 9th December 2012 and was
once again a fun day out for everyone that participated.
Jim spent some time “revamping” the sleigh and serviced the wheels to ensure
that we wouldn’t have any refreshment transportation problems.
Charmaine , with the artistic input of her Mom, put together the theme for the
sleigh - “Protect the Rhino”.
The turnout at this year’s run was not as impressive as for
2011 - both from a Savages perspective and from a general
“running community” perspective. Perhaps the bad weather
that we’ve been having scared a few people off.
The Savages crew completed the race in a very reasonable
time this year - around 2:15(ish) and managed to sustain a
steady pace throughout. And this
was despite the fact that we had to
pick up two young stragglers from another club (Toti Run Walk for Life). These
two young boys kept us entertained with Christmas Carols during the run!
We’d love you to go and checkout the video of the
Christmas Run at http://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=IqB32aNMiQA&feature=youtu.be
At the end of the run we had another of Monty’s Legendary Breakfasts to look
forward to! Thank you to Monty for stepping in to cook for all of us, again!
Well done once again to everyone that participated. We hope to see more of you joining us next year.

Condolences on the passing of Ronnie Pienaar
Long serving Savages Member, Ronnie Pienaar passed away after a period of illness.
Ronnie had been a loyal Savages Member, joining in 1984 and as
proud of always being a “True Savage.”
Ronnie had been responsible for the many of the winning Savages
Busses at the Westville Christmas run, and was always proud of our
wins.
Ronnie’s last achievement was the winning Christmas Cracker of
2011.
To Lynne and family, our thoughts are with you, we will miss Ronnie.

Durban Children’s Home Christmas Party
8th December 2012
By Debbie Honneysett
Savages hosted a Christmas Party on the 8th December for all the Children from Durban Children’s Home
who do not go home or get placed with family or friends at Christmas
time.
There were about 30 children and they arrived at Mitchell Park at 10:00 in
the morning and had fun playing in the playground. We then gathered all
the children up and walked around the animal section. The children had a
ball looking at all the animals. The weather held out for us and we had no
rain!
Savages then took all the Children and the Carers to lunch at Blue Zoo. Blue Zoo were fantastic and very
helpful and accommodating and great with the Kids. They seated us by the play area and put Christmas
tablecloths on the Kids tables, Blue Zoo even gave each Child a goody bag. Thanks Blue Zoo!!
After lunch, we took the Kids and sat under
a big shady tree and Father Christmas arrived with a wrapped present for each
Child. The kids loved their presents and
started playing with them as soon as they
were unwrapped.
A “BIG” thank you to Blue Zoo for accommodating us and being so helpful and thank you to the Savages
members, Kevin and Michelle Bradfield, Charmaine Bazley, Matthew Would and Carey Abercrombie and
Robin Honneysett, that were there to help and spend time with the kids. The Children enjoyed themselves and each one of them came to Charmaine and I and hugged us goodbye and said thank you before
they left.
It was a very successful day and the Children had a ball and enjoyed their outing!

that your running has gone from strength to strength.
Incentive League Rules - 2013
The races for the 2013 Incentive League have been provisionally selected but there have been a number of suggestions for ways in which we can improve the point scoring and rules for the Incentive League for 2013.
Suggestions have been around:
1.
Earning attendance points for assisting at an event Savages is hosting
2.
More accommodating rules for cross country events based on the huge range of difficulty of events, from easy
to extremely challenging
3.
Point scoring when the route has changed from previous years
4.
Presentation at the club tent is mandatory to ensure you earn your points.
If you have suggestions for additional or different rules for the 2013 incentive league then please make a note. We
will hold an “Incentive League” discussion early in the new year to decide what the rules will be for 2013. So come
with suggestions! And if you don’t come to this discussion, then don’t complain if you don’t like the rules!

The Incentive League for 2013 kicks off again with the Sparkport Challenge on 3rd February 2013 and will hopefully be as exciting

By Raymond Meyer
In June this year I needed to re-motivate my running & decided on the spur of the moment to have a crack
at the Boston Marathon in 2013. To qualify, I had to run a marathon before entries opened on 10 September, in a time of under 4h10, for my age group of 65-69. This time seemed to be achievable even though I
had not run a marathon for more than 10 years.
There was a small problem - the only two IMS certified standard marathons in SA eligible as qualifiers were the Maritzburg
Marathon which had passed, & the Cape Town Marathon, which was to be run after entries for the Boston were due to
close. Also, the race is usually over-subscribed and preference in the order of entering is given to those achieving the better
qualifying times in their age group. This meant that even if I made the time it might still not be good enough to secure an
entry.
I talked to Norrie Williamson who has run the race & knows the race organizer. He suggested that I choose a marathon on
the SA race calendar to run before the entries opened, & if he was satisfied with the course measurement, he would intercede on my behalf with the Boston organizers.
But before Norrie could assist, there was the small matter of running a marathon sufficiently within the qualifying time. I
chose the Border Masters Marathon Championship in East London because the race date of 1st September would give me
enough time to get marathon fit, & there were precious few other suitable marathons anyway.
Then began the business of training during the cold winter months while most Comrades runners were hibernating, retracing my old Comrades training routes from my home in Kloof at the top of Field’s Hill to the top of Botha’s Hill & back
(26km), Collins Bus Station (30km), Alverstone Hill (33km), & then on Woman’s Day on 9th August , to Drummond & back
(40km). Fortunately, I had a fitness base from running x-country at the same time, so my long runs were remarkably trouble-free, although I was horrified with my times compared with those of yester-year.
I also reserved hotel accommodation in Boston & got quotes for air travel to the event & then on to visit my brother in
Texas.
I drove to East-London on the 30th August, not realizing what a mission it is to travel through the Transkei on the last Friday
of the month, but managed to arrive in time to register at the Beacon Bay Country Club & to check-in at my B & B run by
Daan & Isobel Louw who are involved in the running community in East London (highly recommended).
The next morning I got a lift to the start in the school bus (Isobel is a teacher), which turned out to be a lonely spot on a
stretch of the N6 42.2 kms from the finish. It was pitch dark, cold, raining & windy & the 220 odd runners huddled in our
vehicles until just before the start time of 6.00am.
Once under way the weather thankfully cleared & although I was deliberately running conservatively, I found that I reached
my pre-determined check-points earlier than planned, with a target time of 4 hours in mind. At the half way mark, while
running comfortably, I tripped & fell heavily (I still do not know why) & cut open the side of my face causing extensive bleeding. My immediate reaction was not to let this deter me from my goal & I jumped up & kept going. I was forced to stop several times to try to stem the bleeding, but the incident got the adrenalin flowing & my time for the second half of the race
(admittedly down-hill for much of the way) was not much slower than the first, although I was desperately tired during the
last few kilometers to the finish.
The result was that I managed 3’54”, (& 82nd out of 189 finishers) my slowest ever marathon, but achieved the qualifying
time by more than 10 minutes. This meant that I could enter on-line on the 12th September, 2 days after entries opened. I
was elated & refused an offer to be taken to hospital. I did not realize how ghoulish my appearance was to others, the
wounds having by then been complemented by a burgeoning black eye. Also I placed first in my age group (no big deal) &
won a gold medal & a cash prize. Although Norrie had reservations about the accuracy of the course distance, my feeling
was that I had qualified the hard way, & if that was not good enough to be accepted, so be it.
I put in my entry promptly at 5.00pm on the 12th September (10.00am US Eastern time) & waited nervously
for two weeks before I received an email accepting my entry without further enquiry.
10
As a bit of an anti-climax I subsequently learned that entries had not been filled by the time that they were due to close on
the 21st, & they remained open subsequent to that date for latecomers who had achieved the required times.
I have since confirmed my travel arrangements & the next step is to up my training in January to be fit for the race on Monday 15th April 2013. So that something more positive than an ego trip can result from this saga, I intend making a contribution to the Durban Children’s Home, Savages’ chosen charity, and invite others to do likewise.
Please log on to www.backabuddy.co.za & visiting Raymond’s Boston Marathon Challenge, or directly to
www.backabuddy.co.za/champion/project/raymonds-boston-marathon-challenge
and pledge something towards Raymond’s achievement in order to spur him on to do better on race day in
return.
Dear Friends,
Durban Children’s Home has over the past
month, been fortunate to receive the support
of our local community in the form of Christmas presents and Christmas parties during this
special time of year. We have been grateful
for the support that the kind hearted people of
Durban have shown the 74 orphaned and vulnerable children in our care. These sponsors
have made the lead up to Christmas an exciting and festive time for our children.
Sadly this period of festivity will soon be over
and whilst we are grateful for this generosity
we ask that our loyal community consider assisting us to sustain our children by considering a gift which will make an impact over the next 12 months. We have drawn up a
comprehensive list of the basic items that each of our children will need for next year and ask you to consider an item off the list.
For example, Mino, a 9 year old boy who lives in our special care centre requires a new pair of school shoes, school socks, a new
school bag, basic stationery, 5 new pairs of underpants, a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, a swimsuit, flip flops, a beach towel, a sun
hat, a tog bag for weekends with his extended family, pj’s, a winter scarf and beanie and a warm jacket.
By gifting our children with one of these items you will be helping to support a child in our care for a
full year. We ask that if any of you would like to support our home in this way to get in touch with
me.
Thank you for all the support that you have shown our children’s home throughout 2012. Together
we have left positive footprints in the lives of our children.
From all the children and staff we hope you
all have a wonderful festive season and a
prosperous and joyful 2013.
