Ho un ish gu Di On behalf st of the Trustees of the American Association in gu ish of Petroleum ed Geologists Foundation, it is my pleasure Le to sharectuwith you the 2012 Annual Report. re F 5 Message from the Executive Director Ffoundation of modern society is built on the geosciences. But rom energy to water, from minerals to building materials, the every time I pick up a newspaper or engage a friend in conversation I’m reminded how few people understand that fact. It suggests to me the AAPG Foundation’s mission to promote the geosciences and encourage students to pursue studies and careers that use geoscience to benefit society is more important than ever. David Curtiss, AAPG Executive Director giving, and we take seriously the stewardship of these gifts. The AAPG Foundation’s mission is vital and, as you’ll read in these pages, its programs are positively affecting the lives of a new generation of geoscientists – and the science itself – all across the globe. Together we’re investing in the future. Sincerely, Over more than four decades the AAPG Foundation has established a strong legacy of doing just that. And Chairman Fisher and the Trustees are committed to building for the future. It is a privilege for all of us on the Foundation staff to work with them to focus and improve our existing programs, evaluate emerging opportunities, and search for better ways to accomplish our mission. Thank you for sharing this vision and passion and for partnering with the AAPG Foundation. The many activities the Foundation supports are only possible through your generous [AAPG foundation highlights] Declaration of Trust was established in April, 1967. Student recipients$15,000 were invited to submit their abstracts for publication in the AAPG BULLETIN and on the Search and Discovery Web site. $10,000 Weeks Memorial medal was established in 2008, and is the Foundations The L. Austin highest award, given in recognition for extraordinary philanthropy and service directed to advance the mission of the AAPG Foundation. The premier award honors the late L. Austin $5,000 Weeks, whose philanthropic legacy set an exemplary standard. This year, the award went Assets to William J. Barrett. He was presentedFoundation the medal at the Opening Session in Long beach, 0 CA, in April, 2012.‘95 ‘96 ‘97 ‘98 ‘99 ‘00 ‘01 ‘02 ‘03 ‘04 ‘05 ‘06 ‘07 ‘08 ‘09 ‘10 ‘11 ‘12 $2.74 million $2,100,000 $1,800,000 $1,500,000 $1,200,000 $900,000 $600,000 $300,000 Contributions ‘95 ‘96 ‘97 ‘98 ‘99 ‘00 ‘01 ‘02 ‘03 ‘04 ‘05 ‘06 ‘07 ‘08 Herb Davis was the 14th recipient of the Chairman’s Award for his support to the Foundation. Davis accepted his award at the AAPG Foundation Trustee Associate Annual $37.92 Meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona. ‘09 ‘10 ‘11 ‘12 $2.13 million million Membership $20,000 The AAPG Foundation Trustee Associates membership totaled 277 as of June 30, 2012. Officers are Don O’Nesky (Chairman), Stewart Henry (Vice Chairman) and David Worthington (Secretary/Treasurer). The 2011 annual meeting was held in Lake Tahoe, California, and the 2012 meeting was held in Scottsdale, Arizona. Six new Trustee Associate members were added during the current year and four passed away. The Trustee Associates support has been and continues to be a critical and important factor in $15,000 the growth and development of the Foundation. At the annual meeting of the Members of the Corporation in Long Beach, CA in April of 2012, Jim Gibbs and Bill Gipson were re-elected as Trustee members of the Foundation Corporation. Mike Wisda and Toby Investment Carleton were re-elected as Members of the Portfolio Corporation. Rick Fritz was newly elected to serve a five-year term. $10,000 ‘12 ‘95 ‘96 ‘97 ‘98 ‘99 ‘00 ‘01 ‘02 ‘03 you ‘04 to ‘05 each ‘06 ‘07 ‘08 ‘09 ‘10 The Board of Trustees extends a heartfelt thank contributor for ‘11 continued support of the Foundation’s vision and mission. The vision to “give back” has taken hold within the petroleum geology industry. In the AAPG Foundation’s history, more than $34.6 million has been received by the Foundation from more than 15,000 donors; $22.2 million (64%) has been received in just the last seven years from more than 7,100 donors. Amazingly, more than 900 donors have given consistently to the AAPG Foundation for the last 10 years. Almost 200 of those have given for more than 20 years. The culture of philanthropy is catching on among the AAPG membership, and certainly it extends beyond life. More than $12 million has been contributed to the Foundation in the form of bequests. EDUCATION PUBLIC OUTREACH UNIVERSITY STUDENTS RECOGNTION OF EDUCATORS KNOWLEDGE PRESERVATION DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION EMERGING OPPORTUNITIES 20 [AAPG Foundation] The 90/10 rule (90% of gifts come from the top 10% of donors) did not hold true this year. Ninety percent of the gifts came from the top two percent of donors. Sixty-six percent of contributions came from AAPG members. Thirty percent of this year’s contributions came from companies. There are 10,837 individuals who have given to the Foundation at some point, but not in the last 12 months. We are hopeful of attracting these donors to contribute in the future. Under two percent of total gifts have come in from outside the United States, but 32 percent of the Foundation’s grants go to students outside the U.S. annually. The reach of the AAPG Foundation extended to more countries this past year and will go farther in the years to come. We honor the donor, and yet, we ask still. The challenge to fulfill the mission is there, and a lofty one it is. The AAPG Foundation received 3,325 gifts this fiscal year totaling over $2.7 million. More than half (54%) of the gifts to the AAPG Foundation came from Trustee Associates. Thirty percent came from companies. Members of the Corporation The Corporation was formed in 1986 to establish a permanent entity to conduct educational, charitable and scientific activities related to or allied with the field of geology and for additional purposes as stated in the Bylaws. There are 20 regular members, six Trustee members and five Trustee Emeritus Members.
