words of thanks from students to our donors
Dear Mrs. Marta Weeks-Wulf,
My name is Matthew Tave and I am currently the president of the Texas Tech AAPG Student Chapter
in Lubbock, Texas. I wanted to write you and express our chapter’s genuine thanks and appreciation
for awarding us with the $1,000 scholarship. Our chapter is growing slowly and steadily and without
your contribution it would be an even slower growth. The money will be put to good use by next year’s
officers. Some of the money will go immediately to fund travel expenses for students attending the
AAPG Spring Expo in Norman, Oklahoma next week. Also, there are plans to use the money to fund
students attending the AAPG Fall student Expo in Houston next year as well as possibly other AAPG
sponsored expos in the fall. So thank you again from all of us in the Texas Tech chapter and we wish
you the best.
Sincerely,
Matthew Tave
Texas Tech AAPG Chapter President 2012-13
Dear Classen Family,
I’m truly honored and so grateful to be receiving the Classen Family Named Grant. The day I received
this award I literally started jumping up and down with excitement. It made my day and it has made my
semester! This grant has contributed and will continue to contribute significantly in the completion of
my thesis. Thank you SO MUCH for your support.
Sincerely,
Gabriela Keeton
Dear Mr. Ian Dunderdale,
My passion for Earth science prompted me to choose Geology as my undergraduate major. I feel
very grateful to have been given the opportunity to continue my studies in geology at the Rosenstiel
School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami.
Again, I thank you for your generosity and support. SEAPEX is a very well known petroleum
organization in South East Asia, hence, as an Indonesian, it is truly a big honor to me to receive the
SEAPEX Named Grant.
Sincerely,
Irena Andisa Maura

In addition to presenting in this report a list of donors, funds and grants
awarded, you will find highlights of events and activities that occurred
during the year. Among the initiatives for this coming year, the Foundation
is committed to growing the impact of our current programs, introducing
a new program called the Military Veterans Scholarship program and
implementing a new measurement and evaluation tool that should
provide helpful information to the Foundation and the participants of our
programs.
As always, our work would not be possible without the support of
donors, past and present. I look forward to what the future holds for
future generations
of geoscientists.

Message from the Executive Director
Ffoundation of modern society is built on the geosciences. But
rom energy to water, from minerals to building materials, the
every time I pick up a newspaper or engage a friend in conversation
I’m reminded how few people understand that fact.
It suggests to me the AAPG Foundation’s mission to
promote the geosciences and encourage students to pursue
studies and careers that use geoscience to benefit society is
more important than ever.
David Curtiss,
AAPG Executive Director
giving, and we take seriously the stewardship of these gifts.
The AAPG Foundation’s mission is vital and, as you’ll read
in these pages, its programs are positively affecting the lives
of a new generation of geoscientists – and the science itself
– all across the globe. Together we’re investing in the future.
Sincerely,
Over more than four decades the AAPG Foundation has
established a strong legacy of doing just that. And Chairman
Fisher and the Trustees are committed to building for the
future. It is a privilege for all of us on the Foundation staff to
work with them to focus and improve our existing programs,
evaluate emerging opportunities, and search for better ways
to accomplish our mission.
Thank you for sharing this vision and passion and for
partnering with the AAPG Foundation. The many activities the
Foundation supports are only possible through your generous

overview
The American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation
mission is to support educational, charitable and scientific
objectives that benefit the geologic profession and the general
public. Because this mission is immense, the founders divided
it into priorities, which remain a focal point today.
The Foundation proudly supports the endeavors of the
world’s largest professional geological society, AAPG. Although
AAPG is a member-driven organization, the Foundation is able,
under its 501(c)(3) guidelines, to support AAPG’s educational

and are available to the general public. AAPG’s purpose is
to foster scientific research, advance the science of geology,
promote technology and inspire high professional conduct. The
AAPG Foundation’s programs and activities that support AAPG,
directly and indirectly, are found in the pages to follow. Aside
from maintaining its own programs and supporting many of
AAPG’s programs and services, other educational and scientific
opportunities have been identified in the geologic community
that also receive support from the AAPG Foundation.

“IBA was really a phenomenal experience. Thanks to
the IBA experience, we aquired a lot of knowledge. We
mastered the oil and gas exploration workflow from
basin analysis to prospect evaluation. The IBA was a
real oil and gas industry experience. We learned how
to deal in difficult situations and to work as a team.
Also it was a great opportunity to visit Lagos, Nigeria. I
would like to thank AAPG for giving us the opportunity
to participate.”

The L. Austin Weeks Undergraduate Grant awards
deserving geoscience students and their school or
university departments that work with local AAPG
Student Chapters a total of $1,000 in financial funding
to enrich the education process.
Students may use their portion of the grant in the
amount of $500 to purchase needed equipment, such
as rock hammers, camping equipment and more for
hands-on exploration, or apply their funds toward
tuition fees. University departments working with local
Student Chapters may use their $500 portion of the
grant to support the chapter’s activities, like equipment,
conferences and field trips.
The Foundation awarded 68 grants this fiscal year.

“I intend to give the full $500 back to my student chapter to better set them up financially next
year. Funds are very low at the time and with my $500, they will be able to take students to the
Fall Expo in Houston.”

Digital Products
Through the AAPG Foundation Digital Products Fund - University Subscriptions, students and faculty at your designated university directly
benefit from four generations of geoscientists’ scientific experiences and achievements. Each university has online access to the entire AAPG
digital library, which is comprised of over 1 million pages of map and geological information.
The Digital Products Fund
University Subscriptions is a special segment of the AAPG Foundation Digital Products Fund which provides a way for donors to give a gift
to the university of their choice. The Foundation will pay the Digital Products University subscription fee each year so students and faculty
will have uninterrupted access to the entire AAPG Digital Library - over a million pages of international, national and regional libraries of
petroleum, geology and geophysics information.

The AAPG Datapages is a great resource
for students interested not only in economic
geology, but in every aspect of the science.
Either for class presentations, thesis work,
or the Imperial Barrel Award competition, the
Datapages play a crucial role in getting our
students up to speed on today’s hot topics.
The amount of information available to us, all
in one place, makes the Datapages a valuable
asset to learning.
The online AAPG Digital library is like an

The AAPG Foundation Donor
As an ever-growing field, geoscience has no shortage of needs
- the dissemination of current, accurate information to the public,
research funding, grants to university students, publications
to universities that have lean budgets, K-12 rock kits, young
professional career guidance, and the list goes on.
The vision to “give back” has taken hold within the petroleum
geology industry. In the AAPG Foundation’s history, more than
$34.6 million has been received by the Foundation from more than
15,000 donors; $22.2 million (64%) has been received in just the
last seven years from more than 7,100 donors.
Amazingly, more than 900 donors have given consistently to the
AAPG Foundation for the last 10 years. Almost 200 of those have
given for more than 20 years. The culture of philanthropy is catching
on among the AAPG membership, and certainly it extends beyond
life. More than $12 million has been contributed to the Foundation
in the form of bequests.

The 90/10 rule (90% of gifts come from the top 10% of donors)
did not hold true this year. Ninety percent of the gifts came from the
top two percent of donors. Sixty-six percent of contributions came
from AAPG members. Thirty percent of this year’s contributions
came from companies. There are 10,837 individuals who have given
to the Foundation at some point, but not in the last 12 months. We
are hopeful of attracting these donors to contribute in the future.
Under two percent of total gifts have come in from outside
the United States, but 32 percent of the Foundation’s grants
go to students outside the U.S. annually. The reach of the AAPG
Foundation extended to more countries this past year and will go
farther in the years to come. We honor the donor, and yet, we ask
still. The challenge to fulfill the mission is there, and a lofty one it is.
The AAPG Foundation received 3,325 gifts this fiscal year totaling
over $2.7 million. More than half (54%) of the gifts to the AAPG
Foundation came from Trustee Associates. Thirty percent came
from companies.
Members of the Corporation
The Corporation was formed in 1986 to establish a permanent entity to conduct educational, charitable and scientific activities related to or allied with the field of
geology and for additional purposes as stated in the Bylaws. There are 20 regular members, six Trustee members and five Trustee Emeritus Members.
