Vision The AAPG Foundation was established in 1967 to assist the Association and other qualified organizations by providing a source of funding to support educational, charitable and scientific objectives which directly and indirectly benefit the geologic profession and the general public. Previously, costs of AAPG services and publications were entirely defrayed by Association membership dues and from sales of publications. However, as costs continued to increase, it became apparent additional funding would be essential to the continued success of the Association. The leaders of the Association and the Foundation are committed to the belief that a strong Association is mandatory to ensure the future of petroleum geology in providing energy for the benefit of mankind. Uniting their strengths, the Association and the Foundation become an instrument for providing informational, networking, and financial benefits, and strive together to ensure the quality and quantity of AAPG products and services to its membership, the greater geoscience community and our global society. Message from the Chairman As chairman of the AAPG Foundation’s Board of Trustees, it continues to be a privilege and pleasure to thank you for your long time dedication to, and support of, the AAPG and its Foundation. As more fully described in this Annual Report, this has been a very good year for the AAPG Foundation. Your generosity – coupled with earnings from prudent investments – has allowed the Foundation to fund the diverse and far-reaching traditional programs that have meant so much to so many. And with your help we’ll continue to provide such support. But we’re also looking beyond those efforts. To help us fund major new initiatives – and to increase funding for programs that already exist – we are about to embark on a major, new fundraising campaign for the Foundation. While in the beginning phase, this campaign already has received a bequest of $10 million from the estate of L. Austin Weeks, a Trustee Associate and one of the Foundation’s most generous supporters. We trust that this lead gift – the largest single gift ever received by the Foundation – will both challenge and inspire donors to participate most generously in this campaign, and thereby ensure its success. Fisher Again, we on the Board of Trustees extend our appreciation to those who have given of their time and money in the past year and throughout the Foundation’s history. And now we urge your continued support of the AAPG Foundation as an investment in the future. This report is offered in deepest gratitude and recognition of your many gifts. William L. Fisher, Chairman 3 Message from the Executive Director First lady Abigail Adams, wife of second President John Adams, was very interested in the education and enlightenment of our new country. She was quoted to say, “Learning is not obtained by chance. It must be sought with ardor, and attended to with diligence.” Supporting education with “diligence” is the key factor to the AAPG Foundation’s success. From young to old, student to professional, and member to the general public the Foundation seeks excellence in education and building a better community. Good education is, after all, the essential foundation of freedom. Thanks to your generous support, the Fritz AAPG Foundation has expanded its support of three key areas in education—K-12, Grants-in-Aid and Distinguished Lecturers. The AAPG Foundation regularly supports K-12 programs especially through AGI. In 2006, we joined AGI in supporting the production of the science channel Discovery System Earth television series. This series is scheduled to air during the later part of 2007. The AAPG’s Grants-in-Aid Program continues to be one of our premier programs to support education of students. Last year we increased support of the Grants-in-Aid Program by over 20% — from $151,000 to $181,000. 4 AAPG Foundation Distinguished Lecturers and Visiting Geologists are sent all over the world to speak to students, professionals and the general public. Collectively, these two programs are second only to the annual convention in personally reaching and teaching people. Last year the AAPG Foundation increased its donation to the Distinguished Lecturer program by eight percent and we have a new fundraising campaign to double the number of Distinguished Lecturers worldwide. Of course, AAPG also supports education and communication through publications such as the AAPG BULLETIN and the Datapages Digital Geology fund. As you scan through this annual report, your will see many other programs that support the Foundation’s mission. We send and support many teachers and students around the globe to improve the world in which we live. I once read that “Great teachers never strive to explain their vision—they simply invite you to stand beside them and see for yourself” (R. Inman). As always, we thank you for your continuing support. Because of you, your AAPG Foundation is a growing, vibrant vehicle. Come, continue to stand beside us as we continue to build and prepare for the future. Foundation Organization 5 Board of Trustees William L. Fisher Chairman John J. Amoruso Vice Chairman William E. The Foundation investment portfolio increased by $11.95 million last year, the result of the most gracious bequest of $10 million from the estate of L. Austin Weeks and a favorable stocks and bonds market. The value of the portfolio at the end of the fiscal year was $30.822 million. The total assets of the Foundation were $34.755 million. This includes the fixed assets which consist primarily of the AAPG Foundation headquarters buildings and the investment portfolio. For the fiscal year, the Foundation had total gross revenues of $13.28 million. Total expenditures of $2.32 million resulted in a positive cash flow of $10.96 million. Considering net realized and unrealized capital gains of $929,000 resulted in a net gain for the year of $11.89 million. The Foundation received $10,594 million from donors in 2005-06. $34.75 million $25,000 20,000 15,000 10,000 5,000 Foundation Assets 0 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 $30.8 million $20,000 15,000 Investment Portfolio 10,000 8 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 $10.594 million $1,500,000 Total disbursements for awards, grants and program services were $1,369,490. A recent user satisfaction survey completed by both members and nonmembers previously using the library services drew a 46.6% response of the total distribution and concluded: 3 A 98.7% positive response in relation to both quality of service and cost savings to library users. 3 A 91.6% positive response that information received resulted in time saved and/or costs avoided for respondents. In 2005-06 several special projects were completed including: 3 A complete review and purchase for the collection of missing volumes from Abilene Geological Society, Corpus Christi Geological Society, Dallas Geological Society, Houston Geological Society, Ohio Geological Society and the Society for Organic Petrology. maps, cross sections, columnar sections, photographs and illustrations pertaining to the area. Field trip leaders are asked to make at least one copy of their field trip guidebook available to the AAPG Foundation Energy Resources Library by donation or for purchase by the library to ensure the guidebook information is not lost. (Note: Four out of five guidebooks were obtained from field trips held during the 2006 AAPG Annual Convention.) Thank you to all AAPG members and non-members who used the AAPG Foundation Energy Resources Library services this past fiscal year and/or donated to the Daniel A. Busch Library Fund. 3 The launch of a new Foundation Library Gateways Web page, which was profiled in the October 2006 AAPG EXPLORER. One of the library’s most important ongoing projects is the field trip guidebook donation campaign. Field trip guidebooks are prepared for field trip participants and include a road log of stops, written text composed by the field trip leaders and may also include: reprints of articles, 22 Mary Kay Grosvald and Karen Piqune, AAPG Foundation Librarians, provided services in 2006 to more AAPG members than any previous year. Also, over 13,600 individual research requests were generated. E. F. Reid Scouting Fund The E.F. Reid Scouting Fund was named in honor of the late Eugene F. Reid, in recognition for his long-time dedication and financial support of the Boy Scouts and the Boy Scouts Geology Merit Badge. During 2006, funding was provided to the Philmont National Boy Scout Ranch, Cimarron, New Mexico, to produce a handbook for the volunteer Philmont geologists who help identify rocks and minerals, and describe the geology, hydrology and mining history of the area. The Tall Pine Council, Boy Scouts of America in Flint, Michigan was awarded funding to enhance the geology merit badge program by purchasing learning aids, books, rocks and mineral samples and tests kits at Camp Tapico, were 1,500 boys were given the opportunity to fulfill requirement 12(b). Earning the Geology merit badge at the 2005 National Jamboree. 23 Visiting Geoscientist Program The Visiting Geologists Program was developed in 1974 to give students a chance to meet practicing geologists and to discuss geological career options. Speakers usually give a technical talk in their area of specialty as well as a presentation on career opportunities. Providing an effective means of communication among students, faculty, university administrators and geology professionals, this forum offers first-hand factual discussions on the current energy situation and the role of geology in society.
