Theatre manager’s Foreword
It was an amazing opening season for The GB Shaw Theatre.
14,000 of you came to see nearly 70 shows of some of the best
local, national and international performing arts on offer.
Congratulations are due to Carlow’s Bryan Burroughs who
starred in The GB Shaw Theatre’s inaugural show Johnny
Patterson - The Singing Irish Clown written by Little John Nee
and produced by Barabbas Theatre Company. Bryan has been
nominated for The Irish Times Theatre Award for Best Supporting
Actor for his role in Johnny Patterson. His co-star Roger Gregg is
also nominated for Best Sound Design.
We’re very proud that The GB Shaw Theatre hosted the
world premiere of Johnny Patterson and we’re delighted that
their extraordinary talent has been recognised with these
prestigious nominations.
Our second season has another great mix of award-winning
theatre, music, dance, comedy and film - there’s sure to be
something to entertain you in the coming months.
Róisín McGarr,
Theatre Manager
We’re especially pleased to host Little Gem by Elaine Murphy
which has won over audiences, critics and award-judges in
Ireland and internationally. The show has won an extraordinary
number of awards and nominations across the world for its
touching and hilarious telling of the lives and loves of three
generations of Dublin women. It comes to The GB Shaw Theatre
as part of a limited national tour after a run on Broadway and
in The Abbey Theatre, so don’t miss it.
There are many new names to The GB Shaw stage including
Declan O’Rourke, The Fureys and Davey Arthur, Luka Bloom
and Ardal O’Hanlon. Carlow’s own KYDS Dance School, Ballet
Barn, Sugar Factory, Cleere, and Carlow Little Theatre will all be
treading the boards for the first time in this season. The Shaw
Sessions has another terrific line-up of bands too so book your
tickets early.
If you feel like joining in with the action, check out The Edward
Simon Trio Workshop, or African Drumming Workshops, or
Advanced Theatre Workshops ongoing over the season.
We’d also love to hear about your experiences. Our website
lets you to give your feedback to us as well as book your tickets

“Gurney’s virtues...civility, elegance, wit
and charm...have seldom been better
displayed than they are in Love Letters.”
New York Daily News
A.R. Gurney’s Love Letters chronicles the relationship
between Andy and Melissa solely through their
correspondence.
The play tells the story of Andrew Makepeace Ladd and
Melissa Gardner, whose poignantly funny friendship and
ill-fated romance takes them from second grade through
adolescence, maturity, and into middle age.
Their words are both hysterical and moving and as the
play unfolds the audience comes to know both of them
intimately – from their strict WASP upbringing, through
later life political aspirations, love affairs, military service
and artistic ambitions.
A smash hit both off and on Broadway, Love Letters
captures Andy and Melissa with a precision of detail and
depth of feeling only Gurney can command.
Love Letters is funny, compelling, sad, poignant, and will
prove to be an exhilarating and touching night of theatre
that will stay in the memory long after the performance.

Seraphine
A middle-aged cleaning lady spends her spare
time harvesting plants and river reeds, stealing
blood from the local butcher and candle oil
from the church, gathering the raw ingredients
to make paint.
This beautiful, old-fashioned (in the very best
sense) film follows the story of French ‘naïve’
artist Séraphine Louis (aka Séraphine de Senlis).
This is no ordinary biopic. There is no one
defining childhood incident from which all
else flows. In fact, the artist is already aged 50
as the film begins. The artist’s inexorable slide
from obsessive, eccentric ‘savant’ into a deeper
insanity brings out a performance as good as
any you’ll see this year.

and touching new play by Elaine Murphy has

internationally. It tours to Broadway NY and
returns to Ireland to The Abbey Theatre as part
of a limited national tour in Spring 2010.

indigestion and the Sambucas aren’t getting
rid of it. And then there’s Paul, who is just
using Amber until he can get to Australia and
there’s the hairy man who fancies Lorraine
but fails to rise to the occasion and Gem,

If all that wasn’t bad enough, Little Gem
makes his presence felt and life is never the

Shakespearian poems; A Lovers’
Complaint, The Passionate Pilgrim, The
Phoenix and Turtle all of which centre on
the illusion of and eventual disillusion
with love.
This one-hour long performance is suitable
for students or lovers of Shakespeare
looking to enjoy and develop their
understanding of Shakespearean meter and
rhythm as well as Shakespeare’s enduring
obsession with love affairs and their
sometimes tragic endings.
APR 18th
FILM
DATE Sunday, April 18th TIME 8pm
PRICE €7/€5.50 conc. Both prices
include a temporary membership fee.
From the director of 4 Months, 3
Weeks and 2 Days, Cristian Mingiu
and his colleagues, these short
stories reflect the vagaries of life in
Ceausescu’s Romania. Although the
vignette of a lovelorn lorry driver
seeking to win an inn-keeper’s heart by
smuggling her illicit egg treats the era
of food shortages with a bittersweet
twinge, there’s more laughter when a
suburban family have to slaughter a
pig without alerting their neighbours
and indeed in the delightful closing
story, which shows that you can sell air
for a profit if you’re clever enough.
