Hello Fellow Chapter Members,
We have started a New Year and it is spinning by quickly. I would like to begin by
thanking Karla for her leadership last year. The theme of the year was “giving back” and
we did with a year of wonderful programs geared toward garment sewing taught by national teachers at very discounted cost to members. We hope to continue and expand
on our programming this year in new and diversified ways while still being cost effective.
We will begin in March with a “Sit and Sew Day”. Dig out the UFO’s , finish your spring
dress for Easter, bring the quilt to bind, and commune with fellow sewers while you sit
and sew for the day. Then in April join us for a Crafts and Sewing Rummage Sale. It
will be a fabric sale and craft fair. Members come sell your lovingly made items and
shop for fabric and sewing items. It will be a great day of deals. In June there is the
ever popular Sew In. We are looking at having a fashion show and a work shop. The
details are getting worked out.
We are also working on our online presence and hoping to reach another segment of
our area population that sews. We are starting a rework of our website to be more lively
and exciting. We are also on Facebook. Check out our page American Sewing Guild
Phoenix Chapter. Look for announcements and updates about chapter events and happenings. If an opportunity comes up in between our newsletters, Facebook, our website, and direct emails to members will be ways we will keep in touch. We will be investigating more social media platforms as the year moves on.
If you haven’t been to the national website lately, check out the Members Only section.
Not only will you find the great sewing deals from lots of sewing vendors across the industry (see Special Offers) but the staff in Houston have been busy developing sewing
webinars. Some of the upcoming topics: Polar Fleece, French Curve, Let’s Talk Zippers,
Opening a Home Sewing Business, Computer Basics – Very Basic!, Pattern Drafting,
Buttonholes, “Words to Treasure” Baby’s First Quilt, Let’s Talk Pressing. You have the
option to view these live or at a later date when they are added to the growing list that
you can view anytime. (To see these webinars, go to asg.org, Members Only, Videos
and Webinars.)
The theme at National this year is TAG – Teach Another Generation. We wish to encourage the sewing in all age groups, but the focus is youth this year. National has implemented a Junior membership for those up to age 17 or 22 if in college. There is a
youth task force developing programs to give to our very young sewers. The community service project for 2013 is a TAG bag. A drawstring bag to hold sewing supplies that
can be used in youth programs.
Check us out as we evolve and I hope to see you at the events. Let’s keep on sewing,
Kay

Good afternoon fellow Guild Members,
NEWS FROM MEMBERSHIP
SUE CARLSON
Recently National has integrated a new
computer system that will allow us access to our member information. This
will give our chapter more up to date
statistics on membership. This will also allow us to make changes to addresses, phone numbers and email addresses in the main database without
going through National. In order to do
this, however, I need each of you to notify me when you have a correction or a
change to your information. This way I
can not only update National’s database but also update my records at the
same time.
You may contact me either by phone at
602-482-8170 or email at
[email protected].
