Every time I hear those words, I think back to the highlights. We have had some terrific NG meetings, some interesting dinner conversations. We have secured our meeting places both for the Thursday evening and Saturday day Neighborhood Groups. The 2011 Annual Conference/Convention in Los Angeles was amazing (hope you will plan on Houston for 2012). Let’s have more highlights during the next year, so when someone says this year has flown by so quickly, you will have good memories. The holiday season is here. Sewing gifts for friends and family can be overwhelming. Time to sew dwindles to snatches here and there during hectic days or late at night. Holding on to your sanity is a challenge between the demands of your job, baking special treats with your children, just trying to get a cup of coffee with friends, Needlin’ Around E-mail: [email protected] let alone the shopping for those gifts you are not making (gasp!!). But when things slow down, you will have time for those things. So much is crammed into the days between Halloween and New Year’s it is difficult to get everything done. We forget to take a moment for ourselves. So slow down a fraction if you can, take a breath, enjoy the festivities, be grateful for your blessings, and hope the memories of these days will stay with you when the year has flown by so quickly. Happy Holidays. Diane Burleson December 2011 1 Letter from the Editor There has been much to learn as your newest editor. Since my first year is coming to an end and I look forward to a new year ahead, I thought I would share some of my thoughts regarding lessons learned, during the process and offer up my hopes for next year. First, I would like to say how much fun and rewarding it has been to work on the newsletter. As editor, I have enjoyed chance to work on a project that challenges, allows for creative freedom and appreciation for my efforts. My goals for the first year where mostly met or exceeded. There were three main goals: layout, content, and involvement. My first goal relating to layout, I feel has been a tremendous success. My primary concern was to create a layout that provided information to our members in a way that encouraged readership. I am pleased to report that there have been many complements from both within our chapter and from members of other chapters. Our new layouts, like some sewing projects, usually took longer than expected. I will strive to come up with a more realistic schedule. Second, I wanted to offer a variety of articles and content that would appeal to all levels of experience. I strive to balance content regarding 2 Volume 19 Number 5 chapter business, members, sewing and corporate business. In most issues of the newsletter I consider there to be a nice balance regarding content. Next year I plan to continue offering the variety I hope we are all coming to enjoy and expect. Finally, I wanted to encourage our members to contribute articles and related content that all members would look forward to reading. Most issues had contributions by several members, however, this winter issue has proved to have far fewer contributions made and as a result there will be fewer articles for a variety of reasons. I am very interested in working with our membership on what changes can be made that will allow for the greatest improvements in this area. With the holidays providing many demands to our time perhaps we need to rethink the dates our newsletter go out to accommodate foreseeable conflicts. Thank everyone again for their contributions and patience as I learned the ropes of being an editor. While making the text look pretty on the page is something I enjoy and comes easy to me, doing the writing and editing falls on the opposite end of my comfort spectrum. I learned so much last year and anticipate to continue to learn much from this experience. Reita Fisher Needlin’ Around For Sale: Bernina 1300 MDC serger. This is a fabulous serger. December 2011 Thank You to All Our Advertisers Memories from Marcia When I joined the ASG in around 1999, I really wasn’t thinking about meetings I just thought it would be nice to be a member of a sewing group, and not to mention the lure of discounts. I actually joined because of an ad in the back of a Hancock’s Mailer. – The first week after I joined I got a phone call – “oh you should come to a meeting, etc”. I asked when it was, and regretfully I could not attend due a conflict with my sons Boy Scout meeting so I politely declined. After several months of friendly calls I finally I asked where there meeting where, to my pleasant surprise the meeting was actually about a mile from my sons Boy Scout meeting so I was able to start attending. I was blown away by all of the talent and all of the amazing programs, made some friends and just had a grand time. Many of the activities scheduled then are still active now. For instance, there was the retreat one weekend year (its actually 4 days but let’s not get technical), great speakers and lots of fun. My sewing friends have supported me when I have been at my lowest and cheered me on at my highest. It is an amazing group of people whom I would have never met if it had not been for the American Sewing guild. These are my life long friends and part of my family! I will be forever grateful t o the member who continually called and opened this door to me. Despite my friend’s move to California I still consider her one of my many sewing friends and member of my sewing family. October- Jewlery Darlene led our October meeting, introduction to jewelry design. There was a great turnout for this meeting with not only many of our regular attendees but also a few prospective new members. Darlene had a wide range of jewelry pieces to show and she explained the steps on how to assemble the various pieces. After the demos we had fun going through everyone’s beads to see what everyone had brought 4 and some trading amongst ourselves to fill in that certain spot that was missing just the right bead. Overall we had lots of participation, lots of projects finished and a wonderful time visiting. Reita Fisher Volume 19 Number 5 This year’s Holiday party was held at my house. I was so excited to welcome our members into my home, show off decorations, use the fine china and crystal, and share my overall love for the season. While there was an inadvertent mistake regarding what time the party actually started (11am vs 1pm). After some scrambling around using Yahoo group postings most felt 1pm was better. Luckily, I was ready for the party to start at either time and was blessed to get to spend some extra time with a long time member that I had not yet met before, and she seemed to enjoy the extra visiting time. We all enjoyed visiting, eating, engaged in a brief meeting opened presents, ate dessert and cleaned up. There was a wide variety of foods brought and all of it wonderful to eat. In the end we ate our lunch took a break before coming back for dessert. Our annual gift exchange was fun as usual but there weren’t too many “stolen” gifts. Having said that I got to keep what I chose and didn’t have one of the few gifts that where traded several times. As from the lack of pictures we all had so much visiting and enjoying the party we forgot to take pictures. Gratefully there was lots of help to wash dishes, put away food and general clean up. While I may be biased, I thought the party was a huge success and with all the help with the clean up my husband will likely let me volunteer to host for next year. However, since the Classroom was still not available and the break room at Hobby Lobby is to small to accommodate sewing machines, Volume 19 Number 5 we opted to put off our unfinished projects yet again so that we could meet for lunch at Chic-Fil-A, and then take a look around at the highly anticipated new Jo Ann fabrics. In-other-words instead of finishing some unfinished projects we went to see if we could find more new ones to start. The Jo Needlin’ Around Ann’s has lots of variety of fabrics, each department is well organized, and the employees were friendly. Customers and employees alike didn’t seem to get overly flustered with the vast number of people. Reita Fisher December 2011 7 Retreat 2011 Our annual retreat to Flat Rock was fun, as usual. We had a smaller group than in the past, but that meant we had more room to spread out our works in progress. Most of us arrived Thursday afternoon and started setting up the community space. The staff at the Mill House Lodge is so lenient in letting us rearrange the space for our needs and even helps to move furniture. I cannot remember what everyone worked on, but I finished 3 projects that I brought with me. That is always successful in my book. Thursday night we were on our own for dinner. Mary Ann Patrie and Denise Arcuri and I also knit, so we went to dinner with a local knitting group and then shopping in the yarn store that was the coordinator. Lots of beautiful fibers after a spectacular meal. Friday night was our group dinner. Mary Ann Patrie hosted this year’s 8 Volume 19 Number 5 LONG CREEK MILLS dinner at her home, perched on the side of a mountain. Her home is gorgeous, full of handmade items and collectibles. The food was outstanding. There was poached fish with sour cream sauce, salad, bread, roasted vegetables and homemade cake with ice cream for dessert. How can you top that? Denise Arcuri again prepared a flyer with discounts for our members. She works hard with the local shops to arrange these for us. Shopping was definitely in the plan for the weekend. Thanks to both Denise and Mary Ann for their work for our enjoyment. Next year, we are considering an additional day or two. Please think about planning to come with us. There is always show and tell, good food, and lots of shopping opportunities.
