SEW-CIETY NEWS Central Illinois/Peoria Chapter American Sewing Guild Fall 2012, Volume 30, No. 3—Peoria, Illinois Sue C. Barnabee, Editor Advancing sewing as an art and life skill SEW SPECIAL…’12 FEATURES PEGGY SAGERS OF SILHOUETTE PATTERNS This year at Sew Special we are fortunate to have Peggy Sagers return to Peoria as our featured speaker. This year’s event will again be at PARC in Peoria on Saturday, September 29. Peggy’s program “Fit Yourself, By Yourself” is a topic many of us struggle with. Here is a chance to get all of the techniques to help with that problem. Peggy will cover all aspects of fit--from droopy pants to funny pulls and wrinkles. Peggy holds a degree in Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising from Brigham Young University. She spends her time teaching at seminars in the United States and Canada. During her career, she has taught college courses in Pattern Drafting and Design. She professionally drafts patterns for different designers. She created her own pattern line called Silhouette Patterns. Her designs incorporate B, C and D cup sizing as well as proportionate lengths, which is a unique feature in the pattern industry. In addition to apparel designs, Peggy has designed the patterns of the costumes worn by the 1994 Men’s Olympic Figure Skating Silver medalist, Elvis Stojko. Recently Peggy has been working on a PBS series called It's Sew EZ. There will be a variety of workshops for you to select for half of the day at this year’s Sew Special. We will again sponsor the Illinois Make It With Wool state contest. During the lunch hour, the contestants will be featured in a style show of their competition garments with the winners announced for the contest. You may have received a reservation form and information sheet in the mail, at your favorite fabric store or as an email. You will also find a copy in this newsletter on pages 9 and 10. Please fill out one of them and send it in to us. Even if you are a worker or on the CAB, we need your lunch count so be sure to send it in. Hope you are all holding up during this long, hot and dry heat wave. Unfortunately, the weather guy isn’t promising any real relief anytime soon. The weather has been conducive to staying indoors and spending time in the sewing room, right? Several days of my time, I spent helping three of my granddaughters make 4-H garments. It’s a special time of one on one sharing and planting that desire to keep on sewing. I picked a really hot day for the annual summer picnic. Seventeen members braved the heat to enjoy a bountiful picnic dinner. Almost everyone brought items for Show and Tell. The chapter has some very talented sewers. Show and Tell is my favorite part of any guild meeting. The chapter sewing retreat in Arcola was a great success. Seven members spent 2 days sewing to their hearts content. Three pillowcases, 40 bibs, 21 crib sheets, 17 pair mittens, 7 anti-ouch pouches, and 15 children’s surgery caps community service projects were completed. Several personal sewing projects were started and/or finished, also. We had time for some good Amish cooking and fabric shopping. It was a great time. I have decided that I am going to declare one day a month as a sewing retreat day and shut myself up in my sewing room. Let’s see if it happens. Looking to the future, don’t forget to mark your calendars for Sew Special..2012 on September 29 th. The Sew Special committee has completed the workshop schedule and a registration form can be found in this newsletter. They worked hard to find a variety of classes to make a day of learning and fun projects. We are looking forward to having Peggy Sagers as our guest speaker. Hope to see you that day. Also coming up is the Annual Meeting in November. The Champaign/Urbana Neighborhood Group is planning an interesting day for us. Look for more information and reservation information in this newsletter. I am writing this on August 1st. In just a few weeks school will be starting for most students. The summer has just flown by. It seems to go by faster each passing year. Ray and I enjoyed watching our grandchildren’s summer activities. Now we are getting some down time before the school activities begin. We have two grandchildren starting kindergarten this year and three who are starting their last year of high school. It seems it was not long ago that I watched my first grandchild get on that big yellow school bus. Time flies! Are you working on your UFO stash? I’m looking forward to seeing a lot of “Show & Tell” at the annual meeting. 2012 Central IL/Peoria chapter Chapter Advisory Board (CAB) Officers President: Carol Luginbuhl (309) 923-6861-H (309) 868-3441-C [email protected] 1st Vice President: Shirley Feger (309) 699-7467 [email protected] 2nd Vice President: Kay Sutter (815) 692-3323 [email protected] Secretary: Sue Barnabee (309) 647-0111-H (309) 647-229-7999-C [email protected] Treasurer: Linda Franke (309) 838-1801 [email protected] Committees Membership: Peg Wier Cell: (309) 369-3229 [email protected] Neighborhood Groups: Kay Sutter (815) 692-3323 [email protected] Newsletter Editor: Sue Barnabee (309) 647-0111-H (309) 229-7999-C [email protected] Sew Special Coordinator: Kay Sutter (815) 692-3323 [email protected] Retail Liaison: Cyndy Monier (309) 364-3831 [email protected] National ASG Headquarters: 9660 Hillcroft, Ste 510, Houston, TX 77096 (713) 729-3000 www.asg.org Happy Sewing! Since the United Kingdom is enjoying such a good vibe from it, let’s continue that with a review of a magazine that hails from England called Mollie Makes (Living & Loving Handmade.) I purchased the magazine a few times at Barnes & Noble and JoAnn’s. I was intrigued by it because it has a fresh, fun look about it and there is usually a free gift included with the magazine. One time I received a little handbag frame and most recently a card of vintage looking buttons. Mollie Makes is a crafting magazine that showcases knitting, sewing, crocheting, and quilting, plus more. It is modern with a definite vintage focus. It’s a little difficult to pinpoint its style because it’s all over the place—and that’s the fun of it. The issue usually has an interview with a designer such as Lotta Anderson. She is a Scandinavian-born textile designer who is now based in Brooklyn. The magazine also features the home of a designer. There are also stories about stores in London. It’s fun to read and look at the photos. There are one or two projects included in each issue. For example, in the month I am looking at there are adorable needle felted petite dogs (see cover picture.) They give you a step-by-step guide to making these cute pooches, complete with little berets. There’s also a guide on making a cover for a footstool or a pouf. The vintage feel comes throughout the issue by using found goods at a thrift stores. Remaking denim jeans into bags or vests are shown is this issue. It reminds me of something I would read in a 1970s article about recycling. So the old saying of what is old is suddenly new again is evident here. I like this magazine because it shows a variety of needlecrafts such as sewing and embroidery. I also like getting a gift with each issue. The magazine’s design is busy, colorful and a feast for your eyes. When they do show step-by-step for a project, it is done in a clear, methodical way with diagrams, templates and photos. I’ve not traveled “across the pond” to England, but I think with Mollie Makes, I get a flavor of London that probably no BlueLine tour would give you. Mollie Makes has a magazine subscription, both print and digital (via Zinio). There is a website http://molliemakes.themakingspot.com/, an electronic newsletter, a blog with downloads and even competitions. A year subscription is £48.49 or $75. One issue is $11.99. While I don’t pick it up each month, it’s fun to read every once in a while. Box 1311 Bloomington, IL 61702 (309) 838-1801 Sew-Ciety News, Page 10 NEWS FROM YOUR RETAIL LIAISON MY SUMMER RETAILING ADVENTURE This summer has been a bit unusual for me as I have been home less than two weeks since May 8 th. So, or sew, I wanted to share with you some of the sewing related shops I visited between Illinois and Colorado, just in case any of you might travel along this path. First up through Missouri just off Route 36 is Crossroads Quilting. This shop has a nice selection of quilting fabrics and notions displayed among antique furniture and fixtures. There is also a nice supply of needle punch embroidery and wool felt. Since the antique table that I loved was not for sale, I settled on a beautiful collection of luxury silk embroidery floss. The colors were too luscious to resist. Besides, this floss is amazing to stitch with. Another shop along Route 36 located in Seneca, Kansas is The Quilt Basket. This is a small shop with fabric and notions, but what I noticed was a selection of books that were not what I usually find in quilt shops. Many of the titles covered art quilt and decorative techniques. The owner is friendly and also provides a long arm quilting service. Fabric Essentials is located in the heart of downtown Concordia, Kansas. This is a gem of a store stocking quilting and dress making supplies, with the largest selection of Slinky I have ever found in a sewing store. Home dec and special occasion fabrics are also offered along with patterns from smaller independent designers like Linda Lee who lives in Topeka, Kansas. This shop is a great place to browse and buy. One of my favorite finds is what I refer to as the sewing triangle in Lawrence, Kansas. This area closely parallels the Bermuda Triangle as far as going in and getting lost. Here one will find Sarah’s Fabric, Yarn Barn, and Stitch On Needlework, all in very close proximity on Massachusetts Street, commonly referred to as Mass or Mass Street by the locals. Everything from weaving to costume supplies can be found among the three stores. I was just awe struck the first time my eyes came across all the colors of cashmere yarn, which I mistakenly referred to as thread, at the Yarn Barn. I don’t weave (at least not yet), but many of these fine yarns work in the serger for decorative work. Any sewer can be lost for hours here. Finally, Sterling, Colorado is home to Fiber Space. This shop doesn’t have fabric, but what an inventory of yarn and all things ‘fiberish’. There are great buttons, charms and handbag supplies, as well as beautiful hand knitted items to buy. The owner, Linda, is a master knitter who I believe knits in her sleep. She knits continually while working with customers and running the cash register. She also designs knitting patterns for wearables and functional items like dish cloths and baby toys. There is a spacious table open to all to sit and learn to knit or just work on a project. This shop is not only interesting, but a lot of fun to visit. I look forward to returning home and visiting the local shops. Look for local news in the next newsletter. In the meantime, I hope you all enjoy hunting for sewing shops while working away from home or relaxing on vacation. SURGICAL DRAPES We are continuing to make surgical drapes for Operation SAFE (Save Animals From Euthanasia). For more information contact Peg Wier. [email protected] SEWING TIPS FROM SUE Staple a sample of the fabric to the pattern you use. That way you can easily remember the garment. Add any notes you may need. Maintain a file with various topics of interest to store those magazine articles and downloaded patterns and information for future use. Some use a notebook with divisions for each topic instead. Depends on how many articles you’ve saved! Keep a telephone index file next to your computer so you can easily look up frequently used web sites and any passwords. Smaller inexpensive washers from the hardware store can be used as weights in the seams of jackets to make them hang better. Always put your current fabric store fliers and coupons in the car. That way you’ll always have them with you! Remember to use your 10% JoAnn’s coupon. Have the store scan the mailing label so you remain on the mailing list. When using steam, remember to let your iron get hot. Test it by shooting a burst of steam in the air. Then you know it is ready. It also helps eliminate leaking irons. She was taught by her mother during her early years. By her early teens, she was sewing most of her wardrobe. She earned a B.S. in home economics from the University of Illinois. This led to positions in interior design, craft store management and custom dressmaking from home while her children were young. She added skills in color analysis and wardrobe styling. Londa became enchanted with heirloom sewing and its creative possibilities. She attended a business school at Martha Pullen School of Art Fashion in 1988. That’s when she launched Londa’s Elegant Creations, her women’s pattern line featuring heirloom sewing. In 1990, Londa opened a retail storefront, Londa’s Sewing Etc., offering fine fabrics, quilting, classes and sewing machines. After 13 years in business, she switched gears to become an internet business, Londa’s Creative Threads—www.londas-sewing.com. She strives to offer top quality service, education and sewing products with a passion as a fellow seamstress, teacher and designer. Londa travels extensively, teaching creative sewing at shops, sewing expos and sewing guilds. She shares her obsession for transforming comfortable sweatshirts into stylish jackets and creating embellished T-shirts. In 2009, Londa developed Talking Patterns to empower and encourage sewers as they sew, offering online photographs and personal recorded directions for each step of her jacket creation process. She has published a book with the Talking Pattern™ format. She has also produced several DVD’s. Londa has had work published in Creative Needle, Sewing Savvy, American Sewing Guild’s Notions and Sew Beautiful. Her creations have also been included in Martha Pullen’s Heirloom Sewing for Women and in Sweatshirts with a Twist by DRG. She has been a featured designer on Pfaff’s website www.nowsewing.net and the PBS television series It’s Sew Easy. Londa will be a guest on American Patchwork & Quilting with Pat Sloan on Sept. 17 and with Mark Lipinski on August 22. She will have a Sew News project article in the February/March 2013 issue. Her book, Sweatshirt Transformatons, published by C&T Publishing was released August 1, 2012. Londa and her husband, Charley, are the parents of Jeff and Carmen and love being grandparents to grandson Cole. They live in Savoy.
