2008-2009 Annual Report
Saint Raphael Academy
A Catholic Lasallian School of Excellence
STATE OF THE ACADEMY REPORT
2008-2009
Mission Statement
Saint Raphael Academy is a Catholic, co-educational,
college preparatory school, founded in the tradition of
Saint John Baptist de La Salle, and rooted in the
Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Academy welcomes a
student body that is academically, economically and culturally
diverse. Through its commitment to Christian values, the Academy
strives for excellence in all programs for the spiritual, academic,
Dear Friends,
Nearly four hundred years ago in the city of Rheims, France, St. John Baptist de la
Salle, a titled young man from an affluent family, founded a teaching order of
brothers, dedicated to educating all children, regardless of wealth or status.
Today, the De La Salle Christian Brothers carry out that educational mission in 82
countries, operating more than 1,000 schools.
Saint Raphael Academy maintains a deep commitment to the founding principles
of St. John Baptist de La Salle:
• Academic Excellence
• Concern for the Poor/Social Justice
• Faith in the Presence of God
• Inclusivity/Respect for All Persons
• Dedication to the Teachings of the Gospel
Saint Raphael Academy is recognized as a living embodiment of these core principles.
In all that we do, we at Saint Raphael Academy—faculty, staff and volunteers—seek
to assist today’s parents in the “educational, ethical and religious formation of
their children.” No calling is more urgent in today’s challenging world, no
profession more rewarding.
In the pages of this annual report, you will find highlights of the 2008-2009
academic year. We believe these selected accomplishments illustrate the
dynamic, real-world education that is fostered here on Walcott Street. We
invite you to join us—as a parent, student, teacher, donor, volunteer or friend—in
helping to bring to daily life the ideals of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. We are proud
to be part of the Lasallian tradition, and proud that Saint Raphael Academy is such a
fine example of its worth.
cultural and physical development of each student. Saint Raphael
Academy seeks to provide a safe environment that places a priority
on mutual respect as well as self-discipline. The Academy prepares
each student for a life dedicated to learning, leadership and
service to the Church and the community.

English Department Chair David O’Connell was named by the Rhode Island State
Council of the Arts as the recipient of its prestigious Fellowship in Poetry for 2009.
David received his M.F.A. in creative writing from Ohio State University and is currently
at work on his first full-length collection of poetry. He has been published in several
literary and poetry journals.
The Moore Scholars, a multi-disciplinary program for gifted students, selected
alternative energy as their subject of study for the 2008-2009 academic year. As part
of their course of study, they learned how to make their own biodiesel fuel.
Jim MacDougald, member of the Class of ’46, donated more than 600 volumes
on the life of Abraham Lincoln to the Saint Raphael Academy library. This valuable
collection of books, some dating back to the 19th century, will form the basis of
study for the Moore Scholars for the 2009-2010 academic year.
The Saint Raphael Academy Drama Club won the Rhode Island State Drama
Festival for its one-act play “Among Friends and Clutter.” This marks the twelfth time
in the last sixteen years that Saint Raphael students have captured the top prize.
Football Coach Mike Sassi (class of ’88) was a featured speaker at the Big New
England Football Clinic in Newport.
Principal Michael Sweeney and Vice-Principal James Pierce completed a three-year
training program in the Lasallian Leadership Institute, conducted by the Christian

Here are some of the Colleges and Universities offering acceptance to members of the class of 2009:
Many schools offer rigorous academic training to young people, and Saint Raphael
Academy is proud to be among their number. Fully 99% of our students continue
their education at several well-known colleges and universities. Our faculty are
talented and caring, and demonstrate the ideal of lifelong learning for all of
our students.
But Academic Excellence is just the starting point of education at Saint Raphael
Academy. The scholastic achievements highlighted here cannot be viewed solely
through the prism of college admissions or Ivy League acceptance rates. The purpose
of a Saint Raphael education is not to separate oneself from one’s peers, but rather
to embrace them more fully. We believe that education is valuable not because it
confers distinction, but because it inspires a true appreciation for the deep bonds that
connect us as equals in the human family

Scholarship Assistance
To help put a quality education within
reach for families, the following
scholarships provided financial aid to
several students during the 2008-2009
academic year.
It is a truth found throughout all of human history: talent, intellect, virtue and character
are widely dispersed among the population; opportunity is not. We seek to address this
disadvantage, first by welcoming rich and poor alike as students at Saint Raphael Academy; and
second, by challenging all our students, once enrolled, to consider that disparity of
opportunity through the lens of social justice.
By focusing on tangible service projects such those we highlight in this report, and through a
directed study of social justice issues in our religion classes, we seek to enkindle in our students
a recognition of the dignity of each individual, and a commitment to the ideals of social justice.
The Lasallian Youth Program is an organization designed to help young people
live out the Lasallian mission by performing charitable works, attending leadership
conferences with fellow Lasallian schools across the country and sponsoring service
projects in local communities. At Saint Raphael Academy, there are 200 members of
our Lasallian Youth Program.

As part of the world-wide network of
Lasallian schools, Saint Raphael Academy is paired with St. Mary’s School
in Nyeri, Kenya. Throughout the
school year, our students in Pawtucket are reminded of the hardships
their counterparts in Nyeri are willing
to overcome every day just for the
chance to go to school. We at
SRA assist our sister school in Kenya
through fundraisers and prayers.
t
The faculty and students of Saint Raphael Academy joined
forces to sponsor needy families during the Thanksgiving
and Christmas holidays. Students prepared and delivered
Thanksgiving food baskets complete with a turkey and
the trimmings. At Christmas, they shared their blessings
by donating food and gifts. Working through local social
service agencies, SRA assisted more than 40 families in the
Greater Providence area.
t
As part of their religious instruction,
students helped support the Gabriel
Project of nearby St. Joseph’s Parish,
by donating baby supplies for poor

expectant mothers.

In March, SRA students joined with
other high schools for a “Homeless
Sleepout”, sponsored by the Diocese
of Providence. Students spent the

to help promote awareness of the

Inclusivity
Respect f o r all Per s ons
It’s hard to imagine a truly educated mind arriving at any other conclusion:
respect for the dignity of others is the foundation of civic and moral integrity.
At Saint Raphael Academy, we don’t explore this concept in the abstract, or simply
in the pages of textbooks. We live it every day. Diversity is celebrated everywhere
on our campus. Diversity of talent, age, language, culture. Diversity of interest,
opportunity, financial class, ability. Diversity of experience, appearance, ambition.
The wonderful paradox of diversity is that by embracing our differences, we
discover how similar we are.
Fr. Dan Sweet, SRA Chaplain,
commissioned ten students to serve
as Eucharistic ministers, assisting with
liturgies throughout the school year.
t
Through this daily ritual, through monthly liturgies, through the efforts of our Pastoral
Services Department, and through daily religion class, the students of Saint Raphael
Academy are encouraged to grow in their faith and to become more fully mindful of
God’s presence in all that they do.
(R) Our student athletes inherit a proud and lengthy sports tradition that includes 48 state titles and
numerous division championships.

(L) The ritual square dancing class gets the same reaction
as when you were in high school: sheepish giggles! Being
open to new ideas and experiences is part of how we
encourage a spirit of diversity throughout the Academy,
even in Phys Ed!

t
Each morning during the school year, as students assemble in home room, and
faculty prepare for the workday ahead, Principal Michael Sweeney calls on all of us to
pause and “Remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God.” With those words,
we collectively offer a morning prayer and conclude with the intention that unites all
Lasallian schools worldwide: “Live Jesus in our hearts. . .forever!”
In June, we were blessed to host a very distinguished guest:
Mr. Thomas Hogan, Class of ‘32, who had expressed a
wish to re-visit the halls of Saint Raphael Academy . Here,
Mr. Hogan and his sons are greeted by members of the
junior and senior classes. Sadly, we received word of Mr.
Hogan’s death shortly after this visit took place. We were

Lasallian schools affirm that education consists of more
than facts, figures and skills; true education forms a person
towards Christian maturity and responsible character. We
seek to instill in all of our students an appreciation of and
commitment to Gospel values such as honor, integrity,
compassion, truth, service, and forgiveness.

One of Saint Raphael Academy’s most loyal and
enthusiastic supporters is Mrs. Rose McHale. Rose’s
husband Joe (’62) was an active Board member
and passionate advocate for SAINTS when he was
tragically killed in a car accident six years ago. For
Rose, part of her healing involved picking up the
mantle for Joe and continuing his devotion to the
Academy.
One very visible manifestation of that devotion
is the Joseph T. McHale Administration Building,
located at the corner of Walcott and Maynard
Streets. This lovely old home was in need of
significant renovation in order to be usable by the
Academy as the home of its business offices. In
memory of Joe, who was Chair of the SRA Board
at the time the building was purchased, Rose has
contributed substantial amounts for landscaping,
new windows, paint and stucco repairs.
The McHale Building is now a beautiful setting for
Fiscal Year 2009
Summary
of
our Admissions, Alumni, Development and Business
Offices, and we are very grateful to Rose for helping to
make this possible.
But her concern for Saint Raphael Academy does
not stop there. Rose is also a member of our School
Board, a member of our Development Committee,
a member of our Nominating Committee, and a
generous contributor to our Annual Fund, to our Fine
Arts programs, and to our Capital Campaign. Rose is
also a scholarship sponsor for our students through
the Joseph T. McHale ‘62 Memorial Scholarship Fund
and The Thomas and Katherine McHale Memorial
Scholarship Fund.
According to Rose, there is one driving force
behind her generosity. As she has said many times,
“It is SO important to have a school like SRA in
this community for students of all backgrounds to
attend.” All of us at Saint Raphael Academy are deeply
indebted to her for her leadership and support.
