One table
two great
settings
Story and styling by Andrea Utter

WHETHER YOU'RE IN THE MOOD for a bit of
girly glam or festive whimsy, the holidays
are the perfect time to dress up your table.
You can achieve two different looks in the
same room with a bit of creativity (and a
sprinkle of holiday cheer). So why not
throw two parties this season and impress
your guests with your clever style? Just by
changing the colour scheme you can create
a different mood.
Deep purples, pretty lilacs
and shimmering silvers
make a delicious setting
for a glamorous holiday
dinner party.
1. The dinner party
A white, lacy pedestal serving bowl filled with reflective
metal balls sparkles beside tall mirrored candleholders
atop the chocolate brown sideboard.
White pedestal bowl, $24.99, HomeSense. Steel balls, large $8
each, small $5 each, Home N-t-T. Mirrored pillar candleholders,
large $119.99, small $99.99, Signature Interior Furnishings.
Add drama to the table with a low arrangement of purple
and snowy white trachelium, dried brunia and sprigs of
silver fir.
Flowers, A Dutch Mill Flower shop. White oval serving bowl,
$14.99, HomeSense.
The setting
Shapely pewter-trimmed wine glasses and silver chargers
set against lilac table linen evoke '50s Hollywood glam.
Home Studio tablecloth, $39.99, Home Outfitters. Pewtertrimmed wine glass, $5.99 each, HomeSense. Purple decorative
glasses, $13 each, Home N-t-T.
Crisp white serviettes are wrapped with strands of hairy
wool in a random application to add texture.
Trendex Home design hotel napkins, $19.99 for set of four,
Home Outfitters.
For an interesting and edible place card holder, cut a
small slit in a truffle and insert the card. It’s a creative
touch your guests will enjoy.

2. The Christmas dinner
Classic platinum-edged china offsets the dark wood tabletop and
festive red striped runner for a bold, yet classic look. Oversized mochacoloured ornaments reflect the moody candlelight and simple crystal.
Mikasa Gothic Platinum dinner plate, $33, Salad plate, $15, Oneida Prose 5piece flatware, $27.95, Household China & Gifts. Sulli ornaments, large $5.95
each, small 3.95 each, La Crème Decor. Riedel Vinum Extreme Cabernet wine
glasses, $46 each, Riedel O Shiraz wine tumblers, $20 set of two, Home N-t-T.
Chunky tea light/taper candle holders, $5.50 each, Lilies White. Tag red-striped
table runner, $31.95, Willow House.
A rolled red linen napkin makes a perfect holiday parcel when adorned
with a slender ribbon and a jingle bell. A pinecone at each place with a
card fit snugly between the cone’s spikes makes a unique place card.
Cut small pieces of heavy paper or use blank business cards.
