To start off let's mention a few memorable dates for heat treaters in 2011. First up we have IFHTSE, (International Federation of Heat Treaters and Surface Engineering, www.ifhtse.org) in Wels, Austria. IFHTSE is a nonprofit organization started in 1971 to promote technology exchanges in the heat treating market. The conference will be held March 23 - March 25, 2011 and the turnout is expected to be very substantial. Next up we have the largest heat treating show in the world, "Therm Process" in Düsseldorf, Germany which will be held June 28th to July 2 2011. This show is staggering in it's size and is held every 4 years. Moving to North America we have the ASM Heat Treating Society Conference and Exposition to be held October 31 to November 2 in Cincinnati, Ohio. All three shows promise to be very well attended. In this issue of "The Monty" we have a large collection of heat treat related news items from around the world including the latest financial results from one of the world's largest commercial heat treaters, Bodycote, an extremely upsetting news item about an accident involving an austempering line, several interesting news items from China, an acquisition in the North American new furnace market and a host of other news items. As always we at "The Monty" appreciate your thoughts and comments and are always pleased to post your announcements. Luckily times have changed and shops like these are becoming fewer and farther between. On the other end of the scale we see plants that are absolutely top notch and American Brazing in Ohio fits the bill. This facility is part of Paulo Products http://www.paulo.com/ one of the larger commercial heat treaters in the world. To some extent each Paulo plant is unique in it's own way (although they all overlap to some degree which is a deliberate decision on Paulo's part so that in the event of some disaster they have backup at other locations), however American Brazing is probably the real "orphan" of the group in that it is almost entirely vacuum. The facility has 23 vacuum furnaces most of them monsters with quenching up to 10 bar and 3 hydrogen humpback furnaces; with 23 vacuum furnaces this makes this one of the 2 or 3 largest commercial vacuum shops in North America. American Brazing has about 70 employees and the main areas they cover are aerospace and power generation. Paulo always has their own unique ideas such as their designed in house controls and data logging systems. While there are a number of interesting points about this plant one that really caught my attention was the fact that all quenching is argon as opposed to nitrogen. This is a more expensive way of doing things but according to Steve Prout, Manager of Business Development this means there is never any risk of running argon only parts in a nitrogen quench. The photo below is very typical of the entire plant and reflects the age and state of the equipment (new and top notch) and also the cleanliness. When pressed by Bob Muto, Plant Manager on my impression I had to say that this facility is in the top 5% of captive or commercial heat treaters I have ever seen in my life. By the way you might recognize Bob in the picture below third from the right. Bob is a famous guy who you might recognize from one of the many GM Enterprises ads. February 28/11 Steve Prout, Connie Richter, Jim Loveland, Tom Gundic, Rick Baka, Bob Hovan, Bob Muto, Tom Buckeye, Gord Montgomery Business Opportunities. February 28/11 Bodycote is currently in search of a Quality Manager and Account Manager. The Metal Improvement Company is looking for a Technical Sales Manager for its Columbus, Ohio Heat Treating Division and we also have a Major Midwest heat treat equipment manufacturer who is seeking a Global Application Engineering Manager. GH Induction Atmospheres is looking for a Regional Sales Manager and MLP Steel has an IMMEDIATE OPENING for a Quality Control Technician. Heat Treating Technologies in Ohio is looking for a Degreed Metallurgist. Lindberg/MPH is looking for an Applications Engineer. Lufkin Industries in Texas is looking for a Metallurgist - this is a top notch company that would be a pleasure to work for. Heatbath/Park Metallurgical is seeking qualified Technical Sales Representatives for the Southern Wisconsin and Illinois territory as well as their North Carolina, South Carolina and Eastern Tennessee territory. Recently we added an Experienced Heat Treater Looking for New Challenges. Gleason Works in Rochester, NY, USA is looking for a Corporate Metallurgist. This is just a short summary of positions within the heat treating industry that are available. Bodycote North America. Friday we had a summary about how commercial heat treater Bodycote did in 2010. As a footnote to that story we have these comments (Bloomberg) from Bodycote CEO, Mr. Stephen Harris about possible acquisitions in North America. February 28/11 "Bodycote Plc, a supplier of metal- strengthening services to Ford Motor Co., is considering acquisitions in North America to be closer to customers, Chief Executive Officer Stephen Harris said. The company, which made no purchases in 2010, is eyeing coatings businesses that cater to the region's aviation and energy customers, Harris said in a telephone interview today. Bodycote has more than 200 million pounds ($323 million) of available credit lines, said Chief Financial Officer David Landless, who was also on the call. Net debt fell to 51.3 million pounds from 85.5 million pounds during 2010, the Macclesfield, England-based company said in a statement today. Net income in 2010 was 27.6 million pounds, compared with a net loss of 50.1 million pounds the previous year. "Acquisitions will be a source of growth," Harris said. The company is looking for both "fairly small in-fill acquisitions and larger acquisitions in niche technologies," he said. Smaller purchases will help in providing services such as heat treatment to its automotive and general industrial customers, the executive said. Larger acquisitions would involve technologies such as spraying ceramic materials onto turbine blades for jet engines or drill bits for shale-gas drilling, part of the company's surface-technology business, he said. "That technology is something we already have," Harris said. "We'd like to be bigger in it because our customers say 'can you please bulk up because we'd like to do business with you in other countries.'" He declined to name any potential targets, saying "there's nothing on the radar screen at the moment." Close to Customers Bodycote's factories in those activities are largely in Britain, and North American customers would rather have the work done nearby, Harris said. "You get a part stuck in customs for five days and that stops the build of a complete engine," he said. "They don't like that." The company's largest business in aerospace comes from widebody commercial jets, Harris said. Production of those planes "is projected to be very high, certainly by the time you get to 2013 or 2014," the CEO said. "The worry in the industry is: Is there the capacity in the industry as a whole to meet the demand everybody is expecting?" Airbus SAS said on Feb. 2 production of its A330 twin-aisle jet will rise to 10 a month by mid-2013, from eight now, to satisfy "unprecedented" demand. It had about 1,100 orders on that date. Boeing Co. has 847 orders for its Dreamliner 787 jet, due to be in service by the third quarter of this year. "We've got capacity to grow and we're confident we'll be able to support all our aerospace customers," said Landless, the finance chief. Customers include Rolls-Royce Group Plc, General Electric Co. and United Technologies Corp.'s Pratt & Whitney unit. "Rolls-Royce are 4 certainly beseeching us to make sure that we're ready for increases in their demand over the medium term," Landless said." Used Equipment Available. Our used equipment listings are constantly changing. We have a perfect condition Surface 2 Bar Vacuum Furnace listed with a very attractive asking price of $180,000 USD. A real gem that we have just added is a batch IQ furnace with working dimensions of 30" X 48" X 30", top cool, hot oil and all the bells and whistles in excellent condition; I/O 3000-E Batch IQ Furnace. New listings include a Pacific Scientific (now Selas) Gas Fired Pusher Carburizing Furnace, a complete Batch IQ Line, a Surface Combustion Temper Furnace (2) a Dow Temper Furnace and a Holcroft Slot Type Box Furnace. Two weeks ago we added a Pit Furnace, a Safed High Temperature Mesh Belt Furnace and several Vacuum & Diffusion Pumps. In our opinion two items well worth considering because of their very attractive pricing are Cast Alloy Fixturing and 2 Press Quench Units capable of handling parts up to 40" diameter-always hard to find on the used market and with some new photos attached. If you don't see what you are looking for please let us know and we should be able to find it for you. [email protected] February 28/11 Wall Colmonoy/Dan Reilly. "Wall Colmonoy is pleased to announce Dan Reilly as Chief Financial Officer. Dan will provide financial leadership for Wall Colmonoy’s business processes - including banking and taxation as well as manage their information technology department. Dan is a licensed CPA in both Michigan and Texas and brings with him a strong background in management accounting systems, public accounting and audit supervision – having 10 years experience from a specialized tool manufacturer in Texas and holding several financial supervisory positions at leading Michigan corporations. ABOUT WALL COLMONOY; Wall Colmonoy is the premiere manufacturer of fabricating, surfacing, joining, machining and casting metal components across a range of industries instrumental to our everyday lives. Combining 70 years of experience with a progressive, visionary outlook, Wall Colmonoy offers our customers trusted, customized expertise that results in smart innovation and shared growth." February 28/11 Acument Global Technologies/Fenton, Michigan. This news item appeared on this site in early December of 2010. It has now become a fact that the facility is up and running although we still do not know the nature of the heat treating department. Our guess is still mesh belt processing. While Michigan has lost a great deal of industry and consequently heat treating in the past few years it probably still boasts the most amount of heat treating in a concentrated area for the entire world. February 25/11 "Acument Global Technologies/Fenton, Michigan. Troy, Michigan, USA based Acument Global Technologies is planning on reopening a facility in Fenton, Michigan. This very large fastener manufacturer closed the plant in 2009, however the plan now is to reopen it with work starting on the plant in January 2011. This is part of a $5 million USD investment in this location as well as plants in Grand Blanc Township and Sterling Heights, Michigan. The Fenton facility will become the company's North American Processing and Engineering Center and as such will do the processing for the company, including heat treatment, sorting parts and other processes that were previously done out of state. While we do not know what form the heat treating department will take the company did recently purchase a 4,000 pound/hour mesh belt line which could possibly be destined for this plant." December 2010 5 Bodycote's 2010 Preliminary Results. I always look forward to seeing Bodycote's (one of the world's largest commercial heat treaters) financial results as it is the best indicator in the world about how the heat treating world is doing. If we start from this viewpoint our summary would be that the heat treating industry is quite healthy. The brief summary below is available at http://www.bodycote.com/?OB=6 along with further comments from the CEO, Mr. Stephen Harris. Joe Hetzer can be contacted at P: 513-842-4211 or E: [email protected]." February 25/11 "HTO/Friesenheim, Germany". Commercial heat treater Härtetechnikund Oberflächenbehandlung GmbH (HTO) in Friesenheim , Germany (south-west Germany) is proud to announce the next step of the expansion of their facility. Mr. Michael Rauer, President told us recently that he is investing in a 6 new very large automated washer from EMO, a new vacuum furnace from Schmetz and a couple of additional box furnaces from HSH. The company is also investing in an energy management addition to their existing peak demand reduction system from "dibalog" to calculate load costs in terms of electricity usage and to get back part of the renewable energy taxes. Both commercial and captive heat treating around the world are recovering after the carnage of a couple of years back and this holds true for Europe as much as any other area around the world. February 24/11 Don Guppy/Great Lakes Vacuum. While we didn't know Don personally he was a well known individual in the industry and his passing was very unexpected. The note below is from his business partner. February 24/11 "It is with sadness that I write to let you know that my business partner, Don Guppy, died unexpectedly on Sunday, February 20th. Services have been arranged through Reyers North Valley Chapel in Grand Rapids, MI. Visitation will take place on Friday, February 25th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. This is just a short summary of positions within the heat treating industry that are available. Are Alloy Prices Going Up? Allegany has just announced another 5-8% base price increase on top of the big surcharges that are currently happening. One reader, who should know about this market says that Nickel based wrought alloys will probably be going up a minimum of 10+% after the first of the month. If anybody is thinking about placing an order they should probably do it sooner than later. Bet on it-but as always hedge your bets and if it does not turn out this way you heard it somewhere else. February 24/11 Nadcap. Monday of this week we had some comments from a heat treater who stated that they were less than happy with their Nadcap experiences. As always there are two sides to the coin as Doug Matson, Chairman, Nadcap Heat Treating Task Group points out below. February 23/11 7 "This sounds like a general rant without any specific question. If the poster would state his complaints more specifically, then maybe they could be addressed. However, I have found Nadcap to be the favorite whipping boy of the independent heat treaters as an excuse for their poor audit preparation. LOL. The auditing procedures have not changed in the last 3 years as the anonymous poster has claimed. The procedures he is complaining about have been in place for the entire 20 years that Nadcap has been in business. As for the specific restrictions on \"auditor consulting\", I would suggest that he contact PRI directly and they will be glad to explain their policy." Solo Swiss Group/Porrentruy, Switzerland. Our most recent advertiser is a company by the name of Solo Swiss based in the very beautiful country of Switzerland. Solo is a manufacturer of a wide variety of new furnaces and is a very well known furnace builder in Europe. Having recently partnered with Lindberg MPH in the US the company is looking to expand their customer base right around the world. February 23/11 "Air Products/Solar Atmospheres. LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa., Feb. 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Air Products (NYSE: APD) has been selected by Solar Atmospheres, Inc., the largest commercial vacuum heat treating company in North America, to provide industrial gases for its newest plant in Fontana, Calif. Air Products will supply Solar Atmospheres with nitrogen, argon and helium for use in the vacuum processing of metals. With this latest contract, Air Products continues to supply all of Solar Atmosphere's nitrogen, argon and helium needs at each of the company's five plants, including four locations in Pennsylvania. Solar Atmospheres has more than 200 employees and projected heat treating and brazing sales of $30 million in 2011. "Air Products has been supplying industrial gases to Solar Atmospheres for more than two decades," said John Giordano, account executive, North American Merchant Gases at Air Products. "This relationship has been built on more than a dependable gas supply. Air Products has sustained this relationship by understanding what Solar Atmospheres wants and needs to be successful and then providing the necessary technical support and know-how to help them accomplish their goals." "Air Products is more than a reliable gas supplier and has worked closely with Solar Atmospheres to understand our business," said William R. Jones, CEO of Solar Atmospheres. "Through our collaboration with Air Products over the years, Solar Atmospheres has found ways to reduce our quench cycle times and save on gas-related costs." Air Products continues to provide technical support to Solar Atmospheres, looking for ways to help the company keep its business operating at optimum efficiency. For more information about Solar Atmospheres, visit www.solaratm.com." February 23/11 Wisconsin Steel Industries, Inc./Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. The recent recession was trying for many commercial heat treaters including Wisconsin Steel Industries, however we are pleased to say that the company is doing well and on track. The President of the company Ms. Chris Dolhun sent us this update. February 22/11 "I am thrilled to say that I have aquired Wisconsin Steel Industries, Inc. as of February 1, 2011. I am 100% owner of this entity and will be certifying as a "woman owned" company. Having worked in the Industry for 30 years, it is an exciting time for the Dolhun Family. We have re-gained control of this family owned business, started by my Father-in-Law in 1939. I will act as President of the Corporation, Son Jacob Dolhun will serve as Executive V.P., and Son T.J. Dolhun will serve as Vice-President of Operations. In addition to Wisconsin Steel Industries, Inc., my sons and I continue to operate Complete Heat Treating in Milwaukee, WI. Both facilities are currently operating on a three shift schedule. My future business plan includes the acquision of another Heat Treating Company, which should take place in 2011. Sincerely, Chris Dolhun, President, WISCONSIN STEEL INDUSTRIES, INC." 8 Curtiss Wright/Metal Improvement Division. "Curtiss-Wright Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2010 Financial Results. While Curtiss Wright itself might not be of a great deal of interest to our heat treat readers their heat treating/shot peening division, Metal Improvement certainly is. The company has 9 locations around the US including Columbus, Ohio, Fort Wayne, Indiana, Wichita, Kansas (3 plants), Lafayette, LA (which by the way makes them the only commercial heat treat of any size in this statewonder how they ended up with a location here?), Roselle, NJ (formerly Iron Bound Heat Treating bought about 8 years back from the former owner, Mr. John Ross), Salem, Ohio and Emigsville, PA. As such we have consistently rated them #6 in terms of the largest commercial heat treaters in North America. The figures below can be found at http://www.globenewswire.com/newsroom/news.html?d=213675 Metal Treatment - Sales for the fourth quarter of 2010 were $59 million, an increase of $7 million, or 13%, compared to the prior year period. The sales increase was driven primarily by higher demand for shot peening and heat treating services within our general industrial market, in particular automotive. Operating income in the fourth quarter of 2010 amounted to $8 million, an increase of $3 million, or 73%, from the prior period. Operating margin in the fourth quarter amounted to 13.1%, a 450 basis point improvement over the prior year period. For the full year of 2010, operating income increased 30% on a sales increase of 9%, from the prior year period. The significant improvements in operating income for the fourth quarter and full year were primarily driven by higher volumes resulting in favorable absorption of overhead costs and benefits generated from our cost reduction and restructuring programs." February 22/11 Used Equipment Available. Our used equipment listings are constantly changing. We have a perfect condition Surface 2 Bar Vacuum Furnace listed with a very attractive asking price of $180,000 USD. If you don't see what you are looking for please let us know and we should be able to find it for you. [email protected] February 22/11 Tom Ruglic/Lone Star Heat Treat. Yes you did read that right. Tom was with Bodycote (commercial heat treating) for many years but just last week he started as Corporate Manager of Quality and Metallurgy at Lone Star Heat Treat in Houston, Texas. I believe one of the reasons was that Tom wanted to get back to Texas. Lone Star HT is a very unique commercial heat treater and one of the largest in Texas. For more details on the company http://www.lsht.com/ February 22/11 Nadcap Comments. Nadcap is a fine organization dedicated to providing quality standards for the aerospace industry and it's suppliers, however I know captive and commercial heat treating companies can on occasion become frustrated dealing with the organization. The comments below reflect what one such company is feeling. While we virtually never publish "anonymous" comments in this case we know the company and the individual who posted these thoughts and these comments are honest and forthright. If you would like to contact the writer we will forward your E-mail to them. February 21/11 9 "I have been involved in the Heat Treat industry in some capacity since 1979 and the last 16 years directly in quality. In the early years of being audited for Nadcap, I found it a much smoother process. In the last 3 years it seems to have turned into a convoluted mess. I have never understood why the auditor did not have any participation in the response process since they are the ones who know what the deficiency truly was and if our response does in fact answer and resolve the actual finding. Once the auditor leaves you with a finding you are turned over to someone who, although very knowledgeable in the standards, is not when it comes to the conversations with the auditor on what they would need to see to resolve the finding. Lets be honest, although every auditor is instructed not to provide consulting on findings they all do it to some degree. If any of "The Monty" readers can shed some light on this practice I would be very appreciative." GH Induction Atmospheres/Rochester, NY. This is an interesting company with a very interesting background. The company has been located in Rochester, NY for quite some time and as you can guess from the name they specialize in Induction heating systems combined with either an inert atmosphere or a vacuum. Based upon their innovative ideas they caught the attention of GH Induction group based in Valencia, Spain with locations in Germany, France, Brazil, India, China and Mexico and subsequently became part of the group in 2010. GH Induction Atmospheres provides systems mainly to the automotive industry with 70% of their systems working with atmosphere and virtually all being complete turnkey projects. If we have peaked you interest we would suggest clicking on the banner ad on this page. February 21/11 Heat Treating Source Wanted. A large manufacturer in the US is looking for a west coast heat treater who can offer mesh belt heat treating. Furnace needs to solution anneal, oil quench and temper in line. Material will be alloy steel, specifically 52100 bearing steel. If this is something you can handle please let us know and we will put you in touch. February 21/11 Harley Davidson/York, PA, USA. What you are looking at in this picture is the last remaining heat treating equipment that Harley Davidson has in house at their facility in York, PA. Never a large in house heat treater (at least at this location) the decision was recently made to outsource their heat treating as opposed to doing it in house. The equipment has been sold and will be removed very shortly. In the photo below you see on the left Jeff McClaughlin of McLaughlin Services (Jeff was responsible for maintaining this equipment for many years and is also responsible for moving it out) and on the right Gord Montgomery. February 21/11 Nitrex/Chongqing Hongjiang Machinery Co. Ltd. On a regular basis we are asked by commercial heat treaters what is the up and coming heat treating technology that they should invest in. It depends upon the market but one that we sometimes suggest is Gas/Ion Nitriding. All we can say is that this technology is certainly growing as you can see from the press release below. February 18/11 10 "Chongqing Hongjiang Machinery Co. Ltd., a Chinese producer of engine fuel injection systems, has received shipment of a turnkey nitriding system supplied by Nitrex Metal Inc. (www.nitrex.com). The NX1015 includes Nitreg® nitriding and Nitreg®-C nitrocarburizing technologies to automatically control treatments for fuel injector assembly parts as well as transmission parts made of Nitralloy, tool steels, high grade steels, and other specialty steels. The system also houses an Ammonia Dissociator for just-intime delivery of process gases at a low cost and a Neutralizing System to eliminate residual ammonia and to meet local environmental targets. Presently Chongqing Hongjiang operates several nitriding furnaces using ammonia dissociation burettes to monitor and control the processes. However, due to the production of more sophisticated automotive part designs and tougher specification demands, the company chose Nitrex to meet their need for more tightly controlled nitriding/nitrocarburizing." Dick Thalacker/Pifco. Never fun to mention that a well known individual in the heat treating industry has passed away however our feeling is that it is important that individuals are remembered when they are gone. In this case we regret to say that Dick Thalacker formerly President of Pifco Furnaces very recently passed away. As a young fellow I worked with Dick as a representative for Pifco Furnaces which subsequently was acquired by AFC-Holcroft. I will certainly remember Dick. The notes below are from his son Dan. February 18/11 "We are having a memorial service for him Mar 27 at St. George church in Brighton, MI.. The date was chosen so most family members that live out-of-town can attend. Please feel free to inform everyone there. As you can well imagine, Dad knew a lot of people and touched many lives. It's a monumental task to let everyone know and do not want to miss anyone. He loved working with everyone at PIFCO, Farr Manufacturing and AFC-Holcroft and thought everyone as extended family. He also, loved working with all the customers bringing them a quality piece of equipment." Wire Mesh Products/York, PA. Every single heat heat treater in the world that runs mesh belt heat treating furnaces has at one time or another had to buy a SS mesh belt. However it is one of those items that everybody is familiar with but very heat treaters have ever seen manufactured, so today is education time. Wire Mesh Products in York, PA is one of the larger providers of SS mesh belts for heat treating applications. Earlier this week we had the opportunity to further our education about mesh belt construction and this is what we learned. The basic material arrives at Wire Mesh Products in the form of SS coils of wire in various grades and thickness. From this point it is continuously fed to what resembles a lathe with a special forming tool which shapes the wire into the individual links of the belt (we saw literally hundreds of tools for varying wire diameters, radius's and shapes, however the tools themselves are very proprietary and no pictures were allowed). After the links are formed (which are of course the full width of the belt) they are manually put together and rods fed through each link to join them together to form the finished belt. At this point the end of the rods are heated and flattened and presto you have a finished belt in whatever length is required. A fairly labor intensive process however the proportion of labor to material cost will vary all over the map depending upon wire diameter, type of material and complexity of the links themselves. All in all a fascinating process. The photos below will undoubtedly give you a better idea of the process than our written description. February 17/11 11 Left to Right; Scott Devers, VP, Purchasing, Richard Riva II, President and Dustin Carl, VP., Gord Montgomery Mid-South Metallurgical/Murfreesboro, TN. The press release below comes from Clif Coleman, Owner and President of commercial heat treater Mid-South Metallurgical. To this we will add a brief background. Clif purchased the company a few short years ago and in that time he has changed it from a rather "basic" (to be polite) operation into a very respectable facility. While Clif does not come from a heat treating background this is a perfect example of what common sense, planning and a good plan will lead to. The company has grown substantially in the past couple of years and during that time has added batch IQ and more vacuum capacity. Mark my words this is a growing operation which will become a major player in the heat treating market in TN in the years to come. February 16/11 "Murfreesboro, TN, February 4, 2011: Mid-South Metallurgical today announced it has received ISO 9001:2008 certification, validating its Quality Management Standards process for ‘providing specialty heat 12 treating and thermal processing services for the carbon steels, tool steels, high speed specialty tools, alloys, and aluminum for the automotive, aerospace, military, agricultural, medical, and commercial industries'. The ISO 9001:2008 standard is recognized internationally and applied to manufacturing and service organizations to ingrain and document a consistent quality management system. Independent confirmation that organizations meet the requirements of ISO 9001 must be obtained from third party certification bodies. The foundation of ISO 9001:2008 is continuous improvement and customer satisfaction. ISO 9001 is by far the world’s most established quality framework, currently being used by over a million organizations in 178 countries worldwide, and sets the standard not only for quality management systems, but management systems in general. Clif Coleman, President, said, "We began working towards ISO 9001 in 2009. Our implementation of this system has been carefully and deliberately crafted to insure that the commitment to customer satisfaction, effective work processes/practices, and customer/supplier partnerships is deeply embedded into the “DNA” of our organization. Quality & Systems Service Manager, David Roark was instrumental in leading the efforts of the entire company in achieving this objective. David will continue to lead this effort and ensure that Mid-South remains compliant with this multi-faceted program.” "Achieving ISO 9001:2008 certification assures our customers, current and potential, of our organization-wide commitment to world-class quality and customer service through continuous improvement. By carefully monitoring our processes and documentation, and working to constantly improve our services, we will insure the consistent quality, reliability, safety, and integrity our customers require." Coleman concluded, "We strive for excellence every day! Mid-South Metallurgical is dedicated to seeing that our customers receive the very best we have to offer in our services and business practices. ISO 9001:2008 certification allows them to know, in advance, what they can expect when entrusting their business to us." About Mid-South Metallurgical Headquartered in Murfreesboro, TN MidSouth Metallurgical has provided heat treating and thermal processing services for a diverse range of industries including automotive, aerospace, military, agricultural, medical, mining, and construction equipment since 1985. Coleman acquired the company in 2007 and quickly put the organization on a growth track by launching a comprehensive sales and marketing program, improving operational capacity and efficiency, and investing in new equipment and technology. The company has also made significant strides to improve energy efficiency. These “green efforts” were recognized in May 2010 as the company accepted the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Champion Award." Heat Alliance. We welcome our newest advertisor "Heat Alliance" whose banner ad you can find on this page. Heat Alliance is an interesting company which serves as the "umbrella" for a number of different firms around the world involved in servicing the heat treating industry. Be it the USA, Germany, Poland, Turkey or France this company can help you with your heat treating requirements. February 16/11 Seco Warwick Retech/China. Earlier this week we mentioned a new advertisor to this site, Seco Warwick Retech (SWR). The General Manager, Janusz Kowalewski gives us a brief summary of their first year in business. The company moved into their new facility August 8th 2010 and since that time they have shipped three CAB furnaces to the local heat exchanger manufacturers. Janusz has lived in China during the late 1990's and late 2000's but according to him he has never seen business so good. This of course brings it's own host of problems such as finding good employees. The company is currently manufacturing two Seco Warwick product lines, vacuum and CAB furnaces. The attached photos shows a 2 bar vertical vacuum furnace with a hot zone of 60”x 60” and two CAB furnaces that are under assembly all of which are coming out of the SWR facility in Tianjin . February 16/11 13 Odds & Ends. Joe Van Bennekom has just joined Lindberg in Riverside, Michigan, USA as a Mechanical Project Engineer. While Lindberg is no longer one of the largest new furnace builders in North America they are certainly one of the oldest and are a very well known brand in the industry. "WEST Control Solutions, Gurnee, IL is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Gianno Hardyanto as Territory Manager for the West Coast, including California, Oregon, and Washington. He is based in Southern California, and is responsible for sales and support of our CAL Controls, PMA, WEST, and Partlow brands of controllers and chart recorders (www.West-CS.com). His contact information is as follows: Gianno Hardyanto, Territory Manager, West Control Solutions, [email protected]." Moving to Canada we see that the new management team at Bluewater Thermal Solutions in Kitchener, Ontario is making quite a difference these days. According to MTI figures this commercial heat treater has jumped substantially this year in the list of the largest commercial heat treaters in Canada in terms of sales. I would have to assume that the undisputed champion is vacuum heat treater Vac Aero. Maini Global Aerospace in Bangalore, India is planning an investment of US $35 to 40 million over the next 5 years to scale up infrastructure & capacity. Part of this plan will include heat treatment capabilities. According to the company; "Last year, the company also won a $10 million order to make structural components for the extended range fuel cells of the Boeing P-8A Poseidon multi-mission maritime (MMR) aircraft, from Marshall of Cambridge Aerospace, U.K. It also won contracts from Safran, MTU, Eaton, Goodrich, Hamilton Sundstrand, Parker aerospace, BAE Systems and Magellan Aerospace." Linamar Corp., of Guelph, Ontario, Canada is an auto parts supplier that has thrived over the past number of years. "GUELPH, Ont.: Linamar Corp. is acquiring the assets of three automotive components businesses owned by the Famer Group in France. The Famer Group's three facilities located in St Romain en Gier, St Etienne and Montfaucon manufacture cylinder heads, blocks, gears and other engine and transmission parts for large engines, off-highway and automotive applications. "Their experienced, highly skilled work force, customer base, products and strategic location within Epe add another great building block for our European growth particularly with targeted customers," said Linamar CEO Linda Hasenfratz. Owned by Famer Industrie, Famer Transmissions and Famer Rivoire, their total revenue is more than $68 million. Linamar, a Guelph, Ont. manufacturer of automotive parts and other industrial and consumer products, said the 300 full-time employees and other temporary employees of the businesses will be transferred to its subsidiaries." While Linamar does a certain amount of Atmosphere, Vacuum and Vacuum Carburizing in house where they really stand out is Induction heat treating. While we have no figures to back this up I have heard serveral times over the past few years that the company is the largest single buyer of new Induction heat treating systems in North America. February 15/11 Volkswagen, Dalian, China/HEESS. November 2010 we had a news item about the very impressive heat treating department VW has installed in their gearbox plant in Dalian, China (Northeast China). The 14 original news item can be found below this article. Now we have also learned that the company is looking forward to a July 2011 delivery date for another HEESS system. Details are below. HEESS is a German based company and probably the largest in the world when it comes to press quenching systems. February 14/11 "HEESS is looking forward to shipping the next Quench Press System to VW Dalian, China in July 2011. The system consists of a 2-lane buffer band, a manipulator to feed and unload the furnace (Rotary hearth), a 2 Ram Quench Press, which could be operated either with the fixed mandrel or the expanding mandrel technology, a Quench Press equipped with a semi-automatic tool change, a compact Cleaning System to remove the oil and to wash the parts subsequently and all necessary tooling. The entire system will be controlled by a state of the art PLC." "November 7/2010. Volkswagen/Dalian, China. In early 2008 German auto maker Volkswagen announced they would be building a new gearbox plant in Dalian, China (the original press release is further down), production as you can see was slated to start operation in 2010. Included as part of this facility was an in house heat treating department. As part of this department it would appear that the company has just finished the installation of 3 Ipsen 1500kg/hour pushers, an Ipsen 1000/kg hour Rotary Hearth Furnace and Temper, 1 HEESS Press quench and 3 Endothermic Generators. Looking towards the future the company has now reached an agreement with another European new furnace builder, Aichelin for phase II of this project. This will include 3 more 1500kg pusher lines with endothermic generators all to be installed and in operation in October 2011. The city of Dalian is located in Northern China. Volkswagen will build a new gearbox plant in Dalian, Reuters reports. The plant will have a capacity of 300,000 units per year, and will start operations in 2010. The Dalian plant will supply Volkswagen's two China-based joint ventures, with FAW Group and SAIC. While the carmaker did not provide further details, Dalian's mayor Xia Deren told Reuters that the project will cost between RMB 2-3bn. Volkswagen's sales increased in China and Hong Kong by 28 per cent to more than 910,000 units last year, exceeding its target of 900,000 units." Seco Warwick and their associated divisions are one of the largest new furnace builders in the world offering everything from Vaccuum furnaces, Aluminum Processing Equipment, Steel Mill applications and Continous furnaces. Feel free to drop a line to our good freind Janusz Kowalewski, General Manager of the facility in Tianjin, China. Nice guy who knows his stuff [email protected] February 14/11 GFI Metal Treating/Rockford, Illinois, USA. Commercial heat treater GFI is taking a very large step forward in moving from a 10,000 square foot facility in Rockford to one of 60,000 square feet. Experience tells me that 10,000 square feet is smaller than the average commercial heat treater in North America while 60,000 square feet is certainly quite a bit larger than average. The 25 years old company http://www.gfimetaltreating.com/ offers a number of different processes including carburizing, stress relieving and flame hardening. We have been told that from here on in the firm will be known as "Da west side good guys". February 14/11 GH Induction Atmospheres. GH is a very interesting company offering Induction systems and Induction systems working in conjunction with an atmosphere. Below we have their latest press release. In the very near future we will be offering a more complete description of their Rochester, NY, facility along with a few photos. February 14/11 15 "GH IA Introduces Innovative Technology for Inductor Manufacturing . ROCHESTER NY: February 7, 2011 - GH Induction Atmospheres (GH IA), a leading provider of industrial induction heating machines, today introduced innovative technology for inductor manufacturing. With Microfusion, a patented process developed by GH Group, identical inductors can be produced from the same 3D manufacturing mold. The inductor (the business end of induction heating machines used for metal hardening, brazing, and other metal heating processes) consists of specially-shaped conductive material through which alternating electrical current is passed. Traditional inductor manufacturing is a one-off process; copper tubing is shaped by hand to conform to engineering specifications. This makes it exceptionally difficult to manufacture absolutely identical inductors with the same performance characteristics. With GH Microfusion technology, multiple inductors can be produced from the same pre-qualified mold. This increases repeatability and consistency when multiple induction systems are running the same process, and significantly reduces maintenance and calibration time when inductors need to changed. "With Microfusion, we can offer inductors with increased life at competitive prices," said Steve Skewes, General Manager of GH IA. "This innovative process will also enable us to design and produce complex inductors that simply were not possible with traditional methods." GH manufactures these inductors with a material compound that is 25% more conductive than copper. Advanced 3D design of the inside wall of the inductor improves cooling efficiency. With one-piece construction that eliminates any weak points from welding or brazing, the finished inductor offers improved durability. For more information and an informative video about the patented Microfusion inductor design process, visit the GH IA Website at www.inductionatmospheres.com/induction-heating/microfusion.html or contact GH IA at 585.368.2120. About GH IA GH Induction Atmospheres (GH IA) is a leading American provider of customized industrial heating solutions for automotive, aerospace, medical and energy production applications. GH IA is part of GH Group –one of the largest, most experienced induction heating companies in the world. With headquarters in Valencia, Spain, GH Group includes affiliated companies in the USA, Germany, France, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, India, and China. " Salt Heat Treating. Earlier this week there was a very tragic accident involving a death in an austempering line. One of the foremost experts in the heat treating industry, Mr. David Pye, sent us these thoughts about the accident and has also provided an article about safety requirements when it comes to salt heat treating. February 11/11 "Hello Gordon , I read with horror last night of the tragic accident in SC with the nitrate salt bath. I acted as legal expert in a similar case about 4 years ago, where the young man stood on top of a nitrate salt bath melting the nitrate salt. He WAS INSTRUCTED TO STAND ON THE TOP OF THE POWDERED SALT!!! (which was molten underneath) and the salt collapsed and he went in up to almost his thighs. The salt was at approx 420F. The case was settled out of court about 1 hour before trial and the young man was paid out. He was in danger of losing his right leg. I have recently been involved in another case regarding the failure of some safety critical components. It speaks volumes to me that training is a very serious issue. That salt pit should have been declared CONFINED SPACE ENTRY. He should have had a buddy with him and should be wearing a safety harness .But that is all behind now. That was the crux of the salt bath case that I was involved as an 'expert' in. A very tragic accident that you reported on. Heat Treaters are still in need of training, especially where molten salts are involved 16 "Safety with Heat Treatment Salts; The writer heard of the accident that occurred in South Carolina with the loss of life while using low temperature (nitrate) heat treatment salts. It cannot be more strongly emphasized that when using any heat treatment salts (low temperature or high temperature salts) that the utmost of care be taken, not only by the heat treatment associate but by management in terms of safety lectures on the use of the salts, handling the salts and the safety aspect. Nitrate salts generally comprise of a mixture of potassium nitrate and sodium nitrite. Both of these salts are oxygen suppliers and one often finds them being used occasionally in the mixture of gunpowder. So extreme care needs to be applied when using not only the nitrate salts, but any heat treatment salts. If the salt bath is in need of repair and it necessitates a person going inside of the salt bath, (empty of course) the event should and MUST be considered as CONFINED SPACE ENTRY. The appropriate meeting of all involved in the repair of the salt bath must understand each other’s function and the potential dangers of CONFINED SPACE ENTRY. The last statement applies not only to heat treatment salt baths, but any furnace that requires an entry into the process chamber or quench tank must be considered CONFINED SPACE ENTRY, and each person should sign off that they understand the confined space entry requirements. When handling the salts (nitrate or otherwise) one should wear the appropriate safety clothing. That safety clothing will comprise of; * * * * * * * The * A fire resistant insulated long sleeved jacket A fire resistant insulated over trousers Long sleeved insulated gloves Shoe spats to prevent burning of the feet with liquid salt splashes Safety goggles for eye protection Safety full face and head face shield Head protection helmet nitrate salts are generally very easy to handle with an approximate working temperature range from; 350℉ up to 1000 It should also be remembered that if the safety clothing is not worn, then if the salt splashes (for whatever reason) onto the skin, it will keep on burning into the skin until the salt cools down to a solid. This can create very nasty burns that will take a long time to heal. Careful pre-heating of the work piece of work basket should be pre-heated to remove any residual moisture that might be present on the work basket or component. When loading the work into the slat bath, the above safety clothing should be worn. Work that has been processed (using whatever salt is being used to accomplish the process), care must be taken with any residual surface salt that might be adhering still to the work piece. Most of the heat treatment salts are considered poisonous, so a very thorough washing procedure must be adhered to remove any traces of residual salt adherence. The writer does not know the circumstances that caused the recent accident and does not intend to speculate on what really did happen. However, having been a heat treater on the shop floor with heat treatment salts, and selling heat treatment salts, care must be taken with the handling and use of both slats and the process furnace. This is why The Metal Treating Institute is so big on training. Training for; * * * * * Confined Space Entry Safe handling and usage of heat treatment salts Safety in Heat Treatment Equipment maintenance Secure storage of heat treatment salts 17 Handled correctly and in a very responsible manner, heat treatment salts are an inexpensive method of heat treating both steel and aluminum. They are also safe to handle, provided that one fully understands the nature of the salts and what they have the potential to accomplish. Train your operations people, train your management, train maintenance, train your safety teams, train your accident teams in the use of salt baths and in particular get the best understanding of both salts and confined space entry. Remember that in a heat treatment shop, things are hot and things can burn and on top of that accidents can happen and they do with an uncanny occurrence. Train, Train , Train." Roy Stockton/Texas. We just learned that one of the most colorful heat treat reps in North America passed away a few short weeks ago. When Roy passed he was well into his 90's and had only slowed down a short time before his death. Roy had serviced the heat treating industry for years as an independent rep mainly selling alloy components for furnaces. It is hard to imagine but even in his late 80's he was still traveling to all of his customers on a very regular basis. Years ago (when he was in his early 80's) somebody asked him when he was going to retire. His answer (if I remember correctly) was when he was 89. He got his wish. February 11/11 JL Becker Company/Gasbarre Products Inc. Now this is a real shocker to the North American new and used furnace market, the acquisition of the JL Becker Company by Gabarre Products Inc. We will have more comments about this but for the time being have a look at the official announcement below. February 10/11 "GASBARRE PRODUCTS, INC. AND J. L. BECKER COMPANY, INC. REACH AGREEMENT FEBRUARY 7, 2011. We are pleased to announce an agreement has been reached between Gasbarre Products, Inc. and J. L. Becker Company, Inc. whereby Gasbarre Products will acquire the business and assets of J. L. Becker Co. Established in 1970, J. L. Becker Co. of Plymouth, Michigan manufactures a complete line of heat treating equipment including furnaces, atmosphere generators and auxiliary equipment. The J. L. Becker facility of 53,000 square feet houses sales, engineering and administrative offices, as well as furnace & machine fabricating and assembly areas. Becker's staff of 40 employees will remain intact. They completely design, sell, manufacture and service the entire J. L. Becker Co. equipment line. The Furnace Group of Gasbarre Products now consists of Sinterite Products, C.I. Hayes, and J. L. Becker Company. This acquisition is an excellent strategic and synergistic fit within the group, because the Becker batch heat treating equipment line complements the Sinterite continuous belt furnace line as well as the C. I. Hayes vacuum and pusher furnace lines. Combined, Gasbarre now has one of the most extensive product offerings in the heat treating industry. John Becker, founder of J. L. Becker Co. will continue with the company. Steven K. Smith, Gasbarre Products' Furnace Division President, will oversee the Gasbarre Furnace Division, consisting of the three furnace companies. Gasbarre Products will continue to operate the new furnace division under the J. L. Becker Company banner in the present Plymouth, Michigan facilities with the current staff of employees. Sinterite Products will continue to operate in St. Marys, Pennsylvania, and C.I. Hayes remains in Cranston, Rhode Island. To find out more about the new Gasbarre Products, Inc. Division, visit www.jlbecker.com." Bodycote/Ipswich, MA, USA. The winter of 2010 is in North America turning out to be a rough one. The article below appeared in the "Ipswich Chronicle" and relates how the Bodycote (commercial heat treating) facility in Ipswich, MA has suffered substantial damage due to snow accumulation. We asked Mr. Tracy Glende, President of Boycote North America, Aerospace, Defense & Energy Divison about this situation and this is what he had to say; February 10/11 18 "You should note that our facility itself was not damaged. We evacuated as a precautionary measure until the structural engineering team could evaluate the building. That assessment was complete today and we expect to be fully operational in Ipswich by the end of February. In the mean time we are working closely with our customers and are processing parts our other locations of South Windsor, CT and Berlin, CT. Additionally we have an Ipswich operational command center established at the nearby Andover, MA Bodycote HIP facility. I think this incident clearly demonstrates one of the biggest advantages our customers have in doing business with Bodycote. We have sufficient infrastructure and resources to overcome even the most sudden events." "Ipswich Chronicle". No one was injured when an industrial building located in a small industrial park at 11 Old Right Road partially collapsed from the weight of snow, Wednesday, Feb. 2, around 6:30 p.m. The building, now closed, housed three industrial condominiums. The two largest businesses in the building are the Altman Distribution Company and Bodycote, a company that fuses metal parts. Two smaller companies also operate out of the 300-foot by 100-foot, metal-sided building. The rear third of the building collapsed in a heap of twisted steel beams, doors, windows and metal siding. In all, about 70 people work there, said a Bodycote worker who was keeping the curious away from the building on Thursday. Matt Wing, another Body Cote worker, said workers in the rear of the building heard cracking around noon and immediately sounded the alarm and the building was evacuated. "It didn't collapse until about 6:30," said Wing. The Ipswich Fire Department responded to the scene at noon with two engine companies and shut off gas, electricity and water to the building, said Fire Chief Art Howe III. The building will be out of service until further notice." Mike Neumann/AFC-Holcroft. AFC-Holcroft (new furnaces) in Wixom, Michigan has announced that Mike Neumann has just joined their team as a Technical Sales Specialist. As such he will provide technical support to the company's customers and will also participate in new equipment sales. Mike has over 20 years of experience in the heat treating business and has a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in metallurgy. On a more personal note I have worked with Mike at Bodycote (commercial heat treating) and AxleTech International, US Gear Division in Chicago (captive, commercial heat treating). Good experienced heat treater in our opinion. If you want to get in touch with Mike he can be reached at [email protected] February 10/11 Equipment Wanted. A customer is very anxious to find a used Jet Wheel Blast with a capacity of 34 cubic feet in any condition. This is called a Jet Wheelblast Equipment MT-34, multi-tumbler. If it comes with dust collector, shaker table and loading mechanism that’s ok, but not necessary. Any size over 28 cubic feet will be of interest. If you have something that fits the bill please let us know and we will put you in touch with this very serious buyer. February 10/11 Where Have All the Heat Treaters Gone? Recently we had a brief news item about how hard it is to find experienced heat treaters. Jim McNeal of ISP, a recruiter specializing in the heat treating industry sent us these thoughts on the issue. February 9/11 "Where have all the heat treaters gone? There are issues in our industry and always will be but the number #1 issue I keep hearing about these days is how hard it is to find experienced heat treaters. I know for a fact that a number of heat treaters lost their jobs in the recent recession and I also know for a fact that a number were forced into other industries but whether this explains why an experienced person is so hard to find is open to debate. Perhaps coupled with the fact that heat treating is a job that few individuals in their early 20's consider explains the shortage. Be that as it may I can think of numerous examples where retired heat treaters are asked to return by their previous employers either on a full time 19 or part time basis. This is a situation that I personally do not see a resolution to in the near future. January 27/11 Gord poses an interesting question and one that I have dealt with in one form or another since I started recruiting in our Business in 1994. I think there are a couple factors at work here: First, recruiting young people into our Business, ranging from the hourly workers on the floor up to Metallurgists, has always been a challenge. As we know, our business is not “sexy” and as society becomes more technologically advanced, Heat Treating just can’t compete with the bells, whistles, and the overall whiz bang of other industries. Another aspect, sadly, is a general lack of work ethic in our young people, the proverbial “honest day’s wage for an honest day’s work”. I recall a Plant Manager telling me years ago that he would pay me a fee if I could find him an hourly employee, no skills required, that would simply show up every day and work hard. That request floored me but I am sure some of you reading this are nodding your heads right now. Add in the liberal use of drugs which has become prevalent along with criminal records, a lot of young people are simply not able to work in our business. Unfortunately, this is a problem I can’t solve. The other question is where are all of the experienced Heat Treaters? Gord is correct, some of them lost their positions and some went into other industries but the vast majority are working and doing well, thank you very much. Then why the shortage? It depends on how you define shortage. One of the second order effects of a slow economy is that employees are less apt to look around at opportunities outside of their own companies. Most are happy to be employed and if they feel confident that their company is going to make it, why risk moving to another situation that might put them into an unstable environment? A contributing factor to this trepidation is that the primary method by which Heat Treaters look for people is through the running of ads. And what do ads do? Usually, they advertise a job to a group of folks who already have jobs. If you run an ad, you are going to get the unemployed/not very good’s of the world because let’s face it, some companies have used this slowdown to trim the fat and get rid of marginal performers. Again, I know some of you are shaking your heads in agreement right now. So, what is the answer? If the position is not time critical, probably not a big deal to run an ad and hope a needle can be found in the haystack of responses. But, if the position needs to be filled in a 6-10 week period, these experienced Heat Treaters, who have their heads down, are working hard, and are really not looking, need to be approached individually and presented with your opportunity directly. Only then can you tap into the folks you need. We can help. Feel free to call or email me with your questions/comments/concerns. Recently when talking about heat treating in Texas we mentioned a commercial shop who felt that with a 64" diameter by 96" deep gas nitrider capable of 15,000 pound loads this was probably the largest in the Southern US. We stand corrected. Texas Heat Treating in Round Rock has two Nitrex gas nitriding systems installed just a few years ago with the largest having working dimensions of 60” Dia x 12’FT Long with a 22,000 Lb Capacity. Damn that's a big nitrider but it is Texas after all where everything is bigger. February 8/11 Fisher Barton/Fountain Inn, SC, USA. The very upsetting news item below appeared on WYFF4.com in Fountain Inn, SC and subsequently on Fox Carolina. What we get out of this is that an individual fell into the molten salt quench tank on one of the austempering lines at this plant. I can easily understand how this could happen and it underscores what a dangerous industry heat treating can be. February 7/11 "Fox Carolina; FOUNTAIN INN, S.C. -- A Greenwood man was killed after falling into a pit at a Fountain Inn plant Friday morning. The accident happened at the Fisher Barton Plant at 100 Industrial Boulevard. According to the Laurens County Coroner's Office, Jared Rousey, 29, was pouring salt into a heat treatment unit, which had about 2 1/2 feet of melted salt in it, when he fell into the pit. Rousey was covered by the melted salt when he fell in, which was at 600 degrees, the coroner's office said. Investigators said Rousey was able to climb out of the pit and scream for help. They said his co-workers called an ambulance. Rousey died on the way to the hospital, the coroner's office said." "FOUNTAIN INN, S.C. -- A Greenwood man suffered fatal burns early Friday after he fell into a superheated pit at a Laurens County plant, according to the coroner. Laurens County Coroner Nick Nichols said Jared Lee Rousey, 29, died as a result of the industrial accident. Nichols said emergency crews were called to the Fisher Barton plant in Fountain Inn at 2:15 a.m. The accident happened as Rousey was preparing a heat treatment that is used to treat metals, Nichols said. The job involved dumping salt into a pit that is heated to extreme temperatures, according to Nichols. The temperature of the pit at the time of the accident was at 600 degrees, Nichols said. The pit reaches temperatures "much, much higher," he said. Nichols said Rousey was alive after the accident and managed to get himself out of the pit, but no one saw him fall in. Fisher Barton South Carolina Inc. is a supplier of precision metal stampings, welded assemblies and heat-treated products, according to its website. An autopsy was set to be performed Friday afternoon in Greenville, Nichols said." Advanced Metallurgical Technology, Inc./Thermal Specialty Inc. Acquisitions in the heat treating industry in the past few years have been almost nonexistent, so this is an interesting news item. Dec. 22, 2010, Advanced Metallurgical Technology based in Fort Worth, Texas was acquired by Tulsa, OK based Thermal Specialty Inc. Advanced http://www.amtheattreat.com/index.html is a full service commercial heat treat which specializes in Ion Nitriding. February 7/11 LME nickel charts. January nickel average was $11.63/lb, a 6% increase over December. The February nickel average through today is $12.61/lb, an 8% increase over January. As you can see below, LME nickel inventories (green bars) remain at high levels while the price (blue line) continues to increase. Typically the price increases as supply decreases, indicating the price today is largely driven by speculation. February 7/11 VCST, Mexico/AFC-Holcroft. Cool, another new furnace purchase which is always a sign of an economy on the upswing. February 4/11 "VCST Industrial Products, headquartered in Belgium, has purchased another AFC-Holcroft UBQ (Universal Batch Quench) furnace for installation in their plant in Leon, Mexico. And another new furnace order to announce-we very much hope that this becomes a regular occurrence, new furnace announcements. February 4/11 "ROCKFORD, Ill. (January 19, 2011) - BeaverMatic Inc., a Rockford, Illinois manufacturer of industrial heat treating and processing equipment for over 50 years, has received an order for a Carbottom Furnace from Metals Engineering located in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Metals Engineering has been adding value and quality to its customer's products since 1968. As a family-owned commercial heat treater with Ted Kemen as president and owner for over 5 years, and within his immediate family for over 9 years, Metals Engineering serves the Midwest region and niche markets within a radius of 600 miles using internal quench furnaces, induction units and car bottom furnaces. To meet a growing demand, Metals Engineering invested in capital heat treating equipment to stress relieve, anneal, and normalize various size components. According to Kemen, BeaverMatic's Carbottom Furnaces have a reputation of providing reliable performance and excellent metallurgical results that his customer's demand. This performance proven carbottom furnace has a work load capacity of 45,000 lbs and a work area of 8 feet wide by 7 feet high by 18 feet long. The overall footprint dimensions are 14 feet wide by 49 feet long with the car extended by 21 feet 4 inches high. For storing and tracking numerous customer recipes, Metals Engineering required a sophisticated control system incorporating a multi-loop programmable temperature controller and videographic recorder capable of storing multiple recipes, real-time trending and historical data collection. The combustion system along with the control system split the furnace into multiple zones to ensure temperature uniformity while supplying a total of 3,675,000 BTU/hour output. With the workload capacity and processing versatility, this carbottom furnace is what Metals Engineering needed for handling larger components. Bodycote/Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. For all you heat treaters in Mexico, Thailand, Texas, California and all those other hot, sunny areas this is what heat treaters in Canada and the Northern US have to live with at this time of year. In this photo you see Bob Fincken, National Sales Manager of SSI (oxygen probes and furnace control systems) making what is a fairly standard sales call in Canada in February. You can see a bit of Bob behind the snow drifts. Drifting on to a more serious topic it was announced last year that Bodycote was investing almost a million dollars into this location. Having seen this plant many times I can attest to the fact that this facility has been seeing some very serious upgrades in terms of oil filtration, skimmers, controls and a host of other areas over the past few months. February 3/11 23 ZF Group/Laurens County, SC, USA. Previously mentioned by "The Monty" this is the latest announcement about the large transmission facility being built by ZF in SC. Obviously we would not mention this except for the fact that this operation will include an in house heat treating department. While we don't know what type of equipment will be included in their heat treating department we do know that in 2007 the company's location in Saarbruecken, Germany placed a large order with ALD for vacuum carburizing systems. Certainly auto transmission components manufacturers tend to lean towards vacuum carburizing as their heat treatment of choice. February 3/11 "ZF Group's $350 million transmission plant under construction in Laurens County represents the largest investment the German auto supplier has ever made outside its home country. The company, which operates 123 production facilities in 27 countries, will employ around 900 and produce 650,000 transmissions each year at the Laurens facility, said Ludger Reckmann, CEO of ZF Transmissions Greenville LLC. "This represents progress, growth and jobs," he said. "If ZF invests in a facility, it is long term." Additionally, the company would like to have suppliers close by, though nothing is finalized, said Reckmann. "We try to attract suppliers to this area but they have to make a business case out of it," he said, declining to name companies on the list. ZF also is in conversation with representatives with the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research about a partnership, he said. "But no commitments yet," Reckmann said. The company broke ground at the Laurens County plant today, with Gov. Nikki Haley, Commerce Secretary Bobby Hitt and other local leaders on hand to celebrate a significant boost to the state's growing automotive cluster. From its Laurens County plant, ZF Group will manufacture eight-speed transmissions that save fuel and cut emissions, as well as the world's first ninespeed transmission for front-wheel drive vehicles. ZF unveiled the nine-speed last month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The products will be sold throughout North America and potentially abroad. If exported, ZF transmissions likely would be shipped from the Port of Charleston, Reckmann said. "I believe we are way ahead of our competitors, which will give us a huge advantage and help this plant as well," he said." Specialty Steel Treating. Monday of this week mixed in amongst our "Odds & Ends" news items we had a brief mention about how one of the larger commercial heat treaters in North America was expanding their operations. Specialty very kindly offered this update about what they have been up to. The company has been busy the past few years is all we can say, with these additions Specialty becomes one of a very select few commercial operations with this many locations. February 2/11 "Specialty Steel Treating purchased a 4th operating facility in 2006 for carburizing and hardening of commercial and aerospace customers. As of December 2010 SST expanded its operations to include another facility in the Fraser area for its continued growth, bringing the corporation to five operating locations. SST would like to thank it's many valued customers for their support and continued commitment, as we look forward to mutual growth in the future." Greg DeKors/SSI. A few years ago mesh belt lines were selling like "hotcake's" mainly to the fastener industry. A lot of the fastener work went offshore, then business conditions slowed down with the result that few new mesh belt lines have been sold over the past couple of years. However according to this press release AFC-Holcroft has just landed a large order for just such a system which is a very good sign for the fastener industry. Note in this press release that HOLO-KROME is moving into a brand new 187,000 square foot building. February 1/11 "HOLO-KROME DIVISION OF FASTENAL BUYS AFC-HOLCROFT MESH BELT SYSTEM (January, 2011) HoloKrome division of Fastenal has placed an order for an AFC-Holcroft mesh belt system, with a capacity of 2000 lb/hr. Originally sold for $2 million US it is complete and currently in indoor storage. All electric with heavy duty rolls on 9" centers it has an atmosphere cool and a temper. Uses 36" X 36" trays. 40" wide work zone, 20" high, 3-4,000 pounds/hr. Brick lined with an operating temperature of 1650F. Vendor is asking $450,000 USD. Complete drawings are available on request. If you are looking for a large normalizing line and are considering new I would suggest that this is a good way to 38 save $1.5 million. By the way the company that disassembled the furnace took video tape for reassembly purposes. Uses a 36" x 36" tray with a 20" high door opening. A typical roller hearth cycles at a preset time and advances the load, one tray at a time, through the furnace. Based on the dimensions, the normalizing furnace should hold 13 trays at a time and the tempering furnace should hold 16 trays. If you advance the normalizing furnace every 18 minutes, you will move a tray through the furnace in about 4 hours. If you advance the tempering furnace every 15 minutes, you will move a tray through the furnace in about 4 hours. Both the high heat and the temper have atmosphere. The high heat max temperature rating is at least 1650°F. New Information & Pictures Draw/Temper See something you need, click on the link or scroll through all the items for sale.
