LEGISLATIVE REPORT
By the time you read this the 26th
Annual Safety and Awareness Rally
will be history. I sure hope this was
a great weather weekend with lots of
bikers in attendance.
Our DC Trip members will have
returned home but not in time for the
BOD meeting to give out a report.
I believe this trip was a trip of very
strong members who also met up
with Kirk “Hardtail” Willard, president of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) for what is turning
into our yearly meeting with
NHTSA. This is at least the 4th annual meeting (could be five, I lost
count) we have had with NHTSA
and not meaningless meetings either.
We have had very good friends
named LaHood who has opened
those doors with the rusty, squeaky
hinges to the NHTSA offices.
This is the importance of keeping in
good graces with legislators, both
state and federal, after they leave
office as you never know when they
will reappear and in what capacity.
Former Congressman, Ray LaHood,
was asked by President Obama to be
his Department of Transportation
Secretary in his first term. WOW!!
Ask the Good Lord for some assistance and look what happens!! That
couldn’t have worked out better for
us. We had a sit down with Sec. LaHood and also with Pres. Obama’s
pick for heading up the National
Highway Traffic Safety Association
(NHTSA) who actually works and
reports for the DOT.
Now enters Darrin LaHood who
won the race for the seat Aaron
Schock once held and the tradition
CONTINUES!! This is the 2nd year
Darrin has gotten that door open for
us and has stated he will CONTINUE to open that door for us. Who
would have believed a bunch of “dirt
bags” would be able to sit down and
talk safety issues with Federal Bureaucrats? I would have as I know
exactly about your resolve and determination for what we want and
need for good safe transportation.
My point for all of this is --- Remember our friends who have
helped to make our lives easier, safer, and more enjoyable while riding
in this great state/country. When
they leave their office you never
know where they will end up. Many
go back to their homes and get involved with local or county politics
and there are those that move on to
other state jobs and they can be just
as helpful on that level as they were
on the state/federal level. There are
many former state legislators out
there that can be quite helpful to us
and a few of them are Wayne
Rosenthal – Director of IDNR, Rich
Brauer – Assistant Director of
IDOT, Susana Mendoza – Cook
County Clerk, Tom Holbrook – St
Clair County, Chris Lauzen – Kane
County Board Chairman, and this
list goes on and on, too many to
mention.
At our Legislative Day Reception I
witnessed Ernie Steele and other
members telling State Rep. Pat
Verschoore (72nd), (who is not running again) thanking him for all his
support throughout the years. Before
all of the legislators take up their
new seats we need to thank all of
those that were our friends while we
still have a chance.
This is where we are at as of

MAY 2016 ABATE OF ILLINOIS, INC. NEWS
Brothers and Sisters,
As I write this, we have had a pretty typical April. Some warm, good riding
days, and some cool, rainy (or snowy)
days that make me question if spring is
really here. I hope you have been able to
get out and enjoy some time in the wind.
By this time of the year our calendars are
filling up with rides and events, usually
multiple to choose from every weekend.
When you choose which one to attend,
do you think about where your money is
going or what you are supporting with
your attendance? Not that its bad to help
raise money for kids or cancer treatment,
but why choose their event over the
ABATE event?
Authority and Accountability.
Some call policing a necessary good,
others will say it is a necessary evil, regardless it is necessary.
Freedoms held dear in a democracy depend on order and justice.
Those that hold the authority to enforce
order and justice require accountability.
Hello everyone!
Hope you’ve all been able to get out your
bikes for the first spring ride, the weather
has been pretty hit and miss but it sure
felt good to be riding. By the time you
read this the Awareness Rally will be
history and hopefully Mother Nature will
have blessed us with a beautiful weekend. Plans are full steam ahead for the

ABATE is here for you. The funds
raised at these ABATE events are used
to further the motorcycling related legislative and educational efforts. The legislative efforts cover on-road and off-road
issues, while the educational focuses on
educating others on how to interact with
us on the roadways and educating riders
on making smart riding choices.
If there is a specific event or ride you
would like me to attend for your chapter,
please email me the details. I will make
every effort to attend, but cannot make
any promises until I look at my calendar.

non-motorcyclist father found
out that he was riding and was
very upset. He is very
anti‑motorcycle and forbids
our son from riding. The father claims that he can get a
court decree prohibiting our
son from riding. Can he get
such a decree from the court?
D-DAY REMEMBERING JUNE 6,
1944 - PLACES TO RIDE BEFORE
YOU DIE: OMAHA BEACH -DOG
GREEN SECTOR
On my way over to ride the Pyrenees
Mountains, I stopped and paid my respects
to those that died at Omaha Beach in Normandy. It is unusual for me to ride anywhere but in my own country, but if you
ever get the chance go there. And I promise that you will never forget what was
done there.
On June 6th, 1944, among the many units,
Company from the hills of Virginia was to
hit the beach at Dog Green Sector in a Higgins boat (the kind used for invasions)-not
a good place to be. All 200 of them in that
landing craft were from Bedford Virginia
(a wonderful place to ride to if you are
riding the Shenandoah Valley). They have
a monument on the town square to the 176
men of Company A that died when the
ramp of their landing craft dropped and
exposed all of them to German MG 42
machine guns. At 1500 rounds per minute,
the boys from Bedford didn't have a
chance.
The MG 42 sounds like a chainsaw when it
is fired - probably the most dreaded sound
at Omaha Beach. So distinctively terrifying
was this machine gun that the Army developed training films to help our troops deal
with the psychological trauma of facing
this weapon. It made a sound like ripping
cloth. Our boys called it crudely - Hitler’s
zipper. It bothers me in that I am pretty
sure the Bedford boys knew what they
were in for when the ramp on that Higgins
boat dropped. The thought of dying for my
county is ok with me, but dying before I
even had a chance to shoot back is not. I
gathered some sand from Dog Green sector; I couldn't help it. I put that sand in an
hourglass and set it on my desk to remind
me of what they did and what a bad day is
all about.
After I left the beach, I had to visit the
Colleville cemetery where some of the
Bedford boys and many others are buried.
It overlooks Omaha Beach and by any definition is a holy place. It is hard to talk
there - draw your own conclusions. The
gravestones are marked with the name and
state of the fallen soldier. Indiana, Illinois,
Ohio and Missouri are inscribed on too
many.
Before leaving, I thought Omaha Beach
was a long way from home for those guys
and I wondered how many of their folks
were able to visit the graves before they
too, passed on. That most of their loved
ones didn’t get the chance to pay their respects is bothering.
P.S. Our guide took us by the cemetery
where the Germans are buried. I didn’t ask
to go there and he did not ask if I wanted to
go. If he had, I would have said no, after
all I had lost family in that conflict. I
learned there was a 13 year old German
soldier buried there, and there was a marker that said, “Most here did not pick the
fight or the cause”. I think, I am glad I
went.
WHEN THE EX HATES MOTORCYCLES
Q. I am a member of ABATE and got
your contact information from the monthly
ABATE magazine. I have a question for
you which will hopefully be an easy one to
answer. I have a son whom I share joint
custody with their father. This past summer, my son developed an interest in riding
on motorcycles. As a single mom, I struggle in keeping him interested in activities
that we can honestly share. He is fully
equipped for rider safety. I am a very
skilled and well trained motorcyclist and
usually only allow him to ride with me. His
A. You have asked a good and complicated question. [I am assuming you have
sole custody of your son.] The court has
considerable discretion in its ruling on this
issue, but the judge should know that this
activity is permitted by law, as is football,
soccer, cheerleading, gymnastics, climbing
and many other sports/activities - like flying in a small plane.
First, I would make every effort to educate
your ex with statistics demonstrating that
motorcycle incidents involving minors are
almost non-existent. This is so because of
the extreme care most parents and others
take when riding with a minor child. You
will be able to show that incidents of injuries to minors from a motorcycle crash are
less than with with football, gymnastics
and other school sports.
You could also argue that riding as a passenger on a motorcycle is safer than being
a cheerleader, for example. As we know,
injuries from that activity are eye opening.
Educate him about the riding skills of others who may take your son riding. And let
him know that those skills learned while
riding will improve your son's skills when
he starts driving.
If you do wind up in court, then you must
go through the same education process for
the judge. Find out if the judge rides as
many do. Be prepared to prove the riding
experience of all of those involved. Bring
in your driving and insurance records
demonstrating your safe nature and prove
it. Bring your son's safety equipment to
court and show the judge. Check with your
local motorcycle safety instructors who
may provide helpful expertise to the court.
In short, educate the court that your parental decision is within the norm of American
life and that riding is part of that norm. If
the judge rides – HE ALREADY KNOWS
THIS. If you get into a jam or need statistics for the above, call me.

TRAILER PARK AND MOTORCYCLE JUSTICE - Just What Can A Park
Owner Get By With?
Note from Rod: ABATE LEGAL has received questions relating to mobile home
park restrictions on motorcycles. Here is
the question:
Q: I just moved into a mobile home
park. I am on a very limited income and
my motorcycle is a primary means of
transportation. My bike has stock mufflers
and is no louder than most of the vehicles
in the park - actually a lot quieter than
most of the trucks. The park rules bar motorcycles from the park at all times - no
exceptions. Can they get by with this and
do I have to comply?
A: Let’s first determine if the streets of the
park are public or private. This is very important in determining your approach to the
park. If the streets are private, your burden
is considerable. If the streets are public you
will have an easy time in winning your
point. Most states that have laws governing
rules in mobile home parks and most require that the rules must be reasonable.
The Illinois law can be found at 765 ILCS
745, the Mobile Home Landlord and Tenant Rights Act. In Illinois for example,
such rules are valid only if the rules
“promote convenience, safety and welfare
of the tenants, preserve park property from
damage or distribute park services and
facilities to the tenants:”
In Illinois, I would argue that a general
prohibition of motorcycles is not enforceable unless your motorcycle runs afoul of
these validity tests. For example, if your
motorcycle complies with noise and safety
issues, how can the park argue such a bar
would promote the safety of tenants and
preservation of park property, etc.? Accordingly, you should request a meeting to
demonstrate that none of the prohibition
rules apply in your case. Be armed with
evidence that your motorcycle complies
with all noise, safety and emission requirements. The gist of your points is that a general bar of all motorcycles is simply not
reasonable.
The law in most states require some connection to reason before a general bar to a
legal means of transportation could be
sanctioned. Most regulations like these are
directed toward those who would disturb
the peace of residents with motorcycles
that are loud and speed. As to the latter,
speed can be controlled by means other
than a general prohibition, like fines or
expulsion. Excessive noise can be controlled in a similar fashion.
I smell a park owner who just does not
want to deal with these issues. Use your
powers of persuasion that motorcycles
should be encouraged. For example, parking is less of an issue, and noise in many
cases of smaller commuting motorcycle are
almost stealth like. Help convince him that
motorcycles are an advantage in the park if
speed and noise rules are strictly enforced.
Suggest that stiff fines could be the solution.
The Indiana law can be found at Indiana
Code 32-31-7, Landlord Tenant Relations.
I.C. 32-31-7-5(5) states that a tenant must
comply with all reasonable rules and regulations in existence at the time the rental
agreement is entered into. A tenant must
also comply with amended rules and regulations as provided in the rental agreement.
Again, arm yourself with evidence that a
rule prohibiting motorcycles is not reasonable.
The Ohio law can be found at Ohio Revised Code Chapter 3733, Manufactured
Home Parks; Recreational Vehicle Parks,
Recreation Camps, Park-Camps, Marinas;
Argicultural Labor Camps. In Ohio for
example, such rules are valid only if the
rules are not unreasonable, arbitrary, or
capricious. So arm yourself with evidence
that the rule against having motorcycles on
property is unreasonable, arbitrary, and/or
capricious. He may say “uncle”.
There is also a provision that requires a
resident to conduct yourself in a manner
that will not disturb the other park residents peaceful enjoyment of the park.,
which may be the owner’s reason for the
park barring motorcycles.
Most laws also require certain notice provisions as set forth above. Call me if you did
not get a copy of the rules and regulations
prior to signing the lease. If you have been
a tenant for more than 30 days, let’s find
out if the park owner was considering a
motorcycle prohibition at the same he was
selling you on the park. This is especially
important if he had knowledge that you
owned a motorcycle when you signed the
lease as this could be a form of fraud if he
slipped this past you at the time you signed
on.
WHEN TREES GET YOU DOWN WHAT TO DO AND WHO TO NOTIFY
Q: I was in a bike accident Monday. A
tree was hiding the stop light and I didn't
see it until the last minute. I locked it up
but ended up sliding through the stop light
6
and hitting a car. I was given a ticket for
running the red light. The officer told me
that I could go to court, plead my case
about the light being hidden and get the
ticket dropped. He basically admitted that
the light was hidden. Now, people are telling us to sue. We are not sue happy people
but if the tree had been trimmed this would
not have happened. What can I do?
ABATE member.
A: Ther e ar e a number of things you can
do to help yourself out and preserve facts
for your case. You are like a lot of folks in
this country that have never filed a lawsuit
and understandably want nothing to do
with that process. Sometimes a case like
yours can be resolved simply by making a
request to the court that is well documented and compelling. In order to get to that
position, get a series of photos approaching
the light from the lane in which you were
riding. A simple camera photo will do. If
the city has already cut the branches, get
photos of their recent modification. Statements of the adjoining property owners and
others witnessing the trimming by the City
should be obtained as soon as possible.
These witnesses demonstrate that the City
had notice of the hazard. You will have the
burden to prove that the light was obscured
at the time of the crash. If the City (you
need to make sure they had the responsibility for trimming the tree) has not trimmed
the branches yet, a notice by you to them is
in order. A copy of the cell phone photos
should be emailed to them immediately.
RoadHazard.org sent a notice, which
should help. If you have a copy of the police report, send it to us. If not, we will
order one for you. That will be useful in
both locating the police officer who responded, as well as identifying how he
documented the accident. He may have
listed critical witnesses who can confirm
our facts. You will need a statement from
him admitting that the tree obscured the
light asap before he forgets about your
case. You must also notify your insurance
carrier of your crash in writing. And send
them a copy of your photos and a copy of
the crash report.
When you are making a claim against a
government entity, you will need to make
sure you place them on notice of the accident. Most states, including Indiana, require that a specific notice be given to the
government entity within a certain time of
the incident. If you fail to do that properly
you can lose your claim. In Illinois, suit
must be brought against the government
entity within one year of the incident. In
Ohio, there is no notice requirement, but
the suit must be brought within two years.
Good luck and if you have any questions
call us.
ROADHAZARD.ORG
Well the weather has finally broke (unless
you’re in Indiana, I’m sure we’re due for
snow any day now) and motorcycles are
once again prevalent on our roadways. One
thing that we are sure to come across with
the passing of winter… POTHOLES!
Please do your fellow motorcyclists a favor
and report potholes and dangerous roadways to RoadHazard.org. We pride ourselves on getting problem areas fixed and
safe for riders. Thank you from your fellow
riders and safe travels.

REGION COORDINATOR
REPORT
Hello from your NW Region Cocoordinators Sandy Murrell and Bud Lein.
The weather is getting better and better
for riding, so lets’ hope it continues.
May is Motorcycle Awareness month. We
want everyone to be safe so we need to
ride on the defensive at times, as there are
obstacle’s out there that could hinder us.
Some chapters have signs/banners they
put up in their region so the general public
is aware that riding season for riding motorcycle is here.
Some of us have already ridden, so I hope
you have T-Clocked your bike so there
won’t have to worry about problems occurring with your bike. Other things we
need to be careful about is sand on the
roads, especially at the intersections and
those nasty pot holes. I know they are all
over, but up in the northern part of the
state it seems they are the worst. Just
watch out for them and be extra careful.
Don’t forget that some chapters are doing
Summer Fun Run books, so if you want to
do some destination rides that you have
never been to before, contact the following chapters who are doing them: Freeport, Kishwaukee, Thunder Rock and
Open Roads. I am sure they would be
glad to sell you one. There are rewards at
the ends, so it may be worth a good investment.
Want a destination ride during during the
week????Every Wednesday night starting
April 6 and running until October 5 Freeport Chapter is promoting Bike Night at
Logans Bar & Grill, Freeport, IL from
5:00 p.m. to 8:00 pm. Come up, over or
Hello again. Wasn’t it lovely to have a
couple of warm days before the cold returned? Someone should smack that
prophesying rodent with a shovel. Don’t
call PETA on me; I’m just kidding. Sort
of.
The Freeport chapter celebrated our 30th
anniversary with a great shindig. The food
was good, the music was grand, and the
company was even better. We had a wonderful turnout and hope everyone enjoyed
themselves. There was speechifying by
some of our officers as well as Freeport’s
Mayor Gitz and State Representative Bri-
down to Freeport and help promote this.
SAVE THE DATE:
Convergence Run, Saturday, September
24, 2016. Would love to see a good turnout. The date was changed, but we wanted
to accommodate as many as we could, as
it would have fallen on the same weekend
as State Party. See flier for details, or call
Sandy or Bud if any questions.
Freeport Chapter had their 30 Year Anniversary celebration on Saturday, March
19 at the Masonic Temple in Freeport.
What a great milestone to celebrate!!!!
Not only did their own chapter members
attend, but there were people come from
other NW Region chapters to help them
celebrate. We are all brothers and sisters
and should support each other. The food
was good and the band was wonderful. It
was fun night for all. Thanks to those that
attended.

Spring was here: the day of this writing it
hailed, snowed, rained, hailed again,
snowed some more, and had a low in the

EVENTS:
The spring Train Run was on Saturday,
April 2. Kevin and his committee worked
hard planning an exciting day for everyone
including the train ride, prizes, card games,
new places, new faces, give-aways, and
having a great time. 65 anxious participants boarded the train in Aurora at 10:20
am to begin their adventure. Stops included The Sanctuary in Brookfield, The Garage in Berwyn, and Phil’s Bar & Grill in
Brookfield. Each place offered wonderful
hospitality, food, sports memorabilia, and
a good time. The Sanctuary was on three
levels full of sports themes, video games,
big screen TV, and all around fun; The
Garage offered a rustic cabin theme with
sports memorabilia and jello shots; Phil’s
had their famous taco bar and big screen
TVs. Kevin and his committee offered
50/50 chances, door prizes, poker hands,
and a great time.
Motorcycle Safety and Awareness:
The month of May has been designated as
“Motorcycle Awareness Month” through
proclamations issued by many local and
county governments, as well as past and
current Governors of Illinois. Our goal is
to raise awareness levels in all motorists,
that motorcyclists are returning to the
roads and highways in greater numbers.
During Motorcycle Awareness Month, our
members will be distributing motorcycle
safety posters and public service announcements at a Windshield Washing
event on Saturday, May 21, from 11 am to
1 pm at Casey’s in Sandwich and the new
Casey’s in Plano.
Plano Car and Bike Show - Sunday, July
17, time to be determined, at the Plano
American Legion at 510 E. Dearborn
Street in Plano. We’ll be working with our
friends at the Legion and also participating
in the show. The state bike will be here so

This starts
are busy season as we are doing our Motorcycle awareness events and getting
started with all our motorcycle events.
We had our first official bike event April
Fool’s run, but due to weather only 3 brave
members stayed on bikes and the rest of us
were in cars and trucks to utilize the heat
as the high was 31 degrees, we had two
routes planned and stuck to the shorter run.
Thank you to Neighbor’s Bar and Grill for
the awesome food they provided at the end
for us.
By the time this paper is in your hands we
will have had our 16th Annual blood drive
and membership drive combined and we
are hoping with the various media coverage that we have an awesome turn out.
The month of May is busy for us as a
chapter.
We have three Monday’s in a row booked
at two separate locations to accept Proclamations and thanks to our Officers that
have stepped up to help me be in two places and accepting the Proclamations for the
chapter. This year I changed how I send
the Proclamations out and up the number
we sent out as a chapter. We have had
great response and will be personally accepting some from cities and villages we
have never or not have been asked to accept them from in a long time. We have
had some different media outlets accept us
reaching out and will help to spread the
word about what we are about and some
upcoming events like the blood drive, our
Awareness Parade we have and our Memorial Run for the Veterans we do every
year. It shows that hard work and determination do pay off.
We have the following May events:
May 14th Annual Awareness Parade leaving Carlson Ice Arena in Loves Park, IL
and ending at Kegel’s Harley Davidson in
Rockford, IL. For those who don’t know
the area this is a route down a major road
that is a highly traveled road, we do have a
police escort along with police blocking
intersections for our safety and there is a
lot of visibility of the Start Seeing Motorcycle Sign and us on bikes, this is our local
effort of helping to show people we are out
there with hopes of saving those of us who
enjoy the freedom of the road from not
being seen. One less fatality is the goal to
what we do.
May 15th is the window wash event. Look
forward to hearing some stories of people
that are talked to while washing some windows and spreading the word about
A.B.A.T.E.
May 21st Memorial Run from VFW in
Loves Park, IL ending in VFW in Roscoe,
IL for the Veterans who fought for the
freedoms we enjoy in our day to day life.
We will be having some fun runs, a kid run
and other great new runs this year all from
suggestions of our members on what they
would like to see.
Our activities girl Becky has been busy
getting everything set up she is already

REGION COORDINATOR REPORT
Hey NE Region,
I have a question for everyone. You’re
out riding on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, hopefully we’ll get one of those
pretty soon, you pull into a gas station,
you see a couple of people on their bikes
at the pumps fueling up, what do you do?
Do you pull up to a pump, nod in their
direction, fuel up and go on your merry
way? Or do you get off your bike, walk
over to them and ask them if they are
ABATE members?
I have another question for everyone. Did
you know that you now only need to sign
up 5 NEW ABATE members to earn a
FREE membership? Just 5, that’s all!
A handful of membership applications
doesn’t take up that much room in your
saddlebag, keep them handy, so the next
time you run into folks that may not know
what ABATE does, talk to them, hand
them an application, what have you got to
lose, the worst they can do is tell you
they’re not interested. (Don’t forget to
write your name on the application where
it says “Where did you hear about
ABATE?”, so that you get credit for signing up a new member.)
If you need applications, talk to your
chapter president or contact me and I will
be happy to supply you with some!

Bring your club event flyers to the meetings. Pass them around! Make sure you

Hello from So. Suburban,
Historically, Illinois has always gone
hand to handlebar. In the middle of the
nation with mostly flat land to ride
through there is plenty of motorcycle
things happening. The racing season is in
full swing rain or cold. In the past there
was a big time Hill Climb in Cary [ I
seen pictures ] now I go to Polo, Il. For
the Rock River Riders hill climb on Fathers Day.
How about the Peoria TT Races [ what a
great track ] Many great drag race tracks
like Byron or Cordova. Well into the 50’s
the Springfield Mile was the race track to
win.
All flat track motorcycle races led up to
this mile for the season final. If you won
THIS race you were champion of the
YEAR. It is still one of the fastest dirt
tracks in the world and they have 2 major
races on major Holiday weekends. The
idea here is to pick a venue, pick a date,
pick a route, pick up your friends… and
go for a RIDE. Many of these and other
tracks like ‘Blackhawk Farms’ also have
race training days or grudge matches
where anyone can go racing if you pay a
fee, pass tech inspection, wear proper race
gear and have the right attitude. [ no

our planned dinner runs. Please plan to
attend as many as you can.

MAY 2016 ABATE OF ILLINOIS, INC. NEWS
River Valley ABATE
May is Motorcycle Awareness
Month!!!
River Valley Brothers & Sisters,
We had a GREAT meeting last month.
I want to thank everyone who came out
and especially those that braved the
cold and winds to bring their bikes and
signed up for the Summer in the Saddle
Contest. Remember, if you couldn’t get
your bike to the April meeting, you can
bring it to any membership meeting up
to and including the September meeting. Final mileage will be taken at the
October meeting, and your bike MUST
be present. Prizes will be awarded to
the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners at
the November meeting. (Cash prizes
will be determined by the amount of
bikes registered)
At the last meeting, the members asked
if it was possible to have more weekend
meetings. It is definitely possible for
next year. We are committed to our
schedule for 2016, but I will look into
scheduling more weekend meetings for
2017. I am thinking that the majority of
the weekend meetings will take place
during the riding season, that way we
can finish the meeting and, weather
permitting, take a ride afterwards.
A few months back, I took on the responsibility of NE Region Coordinator.
I was worried that this new job would
interfere with my main focus, the River
Valley Chapter. In some ways it has. I
find myself getting bogged down with
the little things, like returning phone
calls, e-mails and such. One of my officers, Paddy Brennan, saw that I was
getting a little overwhelmed and he
graciously offered to assist me with
these things. I am happy to announce,
that Paddy Brennan, current River Valley Membership Co-Coordinator, is
now also the River Valley Chapter Vice
President. Thank you Paddy for stepping up!! If you find it difficult to reach
me or I do not return a call or e-mail,
please reach out to Paddy, you can find
his contact information on our chapter
website: www.rivervalleyabate.org.
Speaking of the NE Region, I cannot
express enough how important it is for
all of us in the NE Region to support
each other. Each chapter has events
coming up throughout the year. Some
of these events are just for fun and
some of the events are that chapter’s
main fundraising event for the year.
Whatever the case, consider attending
other chapters’ events and show your
support. Just this weekend, Dave and I
attended the South Suburban Bunny
Bar Hop and Adult Egg Hunt. This
event was free to attend and we had a
great time!! I haven’t been on an Easter
Egg Hunt for many (many) years, and I
had a blast looking for eggs and excited
with the prizes that I won. (Especially
my little light up rubber ducky!).
ABATE stands for A BROTHERHOOD AIMED TOWARDS EDUCATION. So let’s put a little more
BROTHERHOOD into the NE Region!
River Valley will have an information/
membership booth set up at the May 1,
2016 Peotone Swap Meet from 10 am –
4 pm. (Please note that the date has
changed for this event. It was on the
calendar for May 7, 2016) Come on out
and see us, and remember that Mother’s
Day is the following Sunday. Can you
think of a better Mother’s Day gift than
an ABATE of Illinois Membership? I
certainly can’t….
By the time you read this, the 3rd Annual River Valley Spaghetti Dinner will
have come and gone. I will have a report next month.
Did you know that you can earn a
FREE Membership from ABATE of
Illinois? Yes, I said FREE. How you
ask? Easy! Sign up just 5 NEW
ABATE members between January 1,
2016 and December 31, 2016 and you
will earn yourself a FREE 1-year membership. FYI, members are NOT required to own a motorcycle or even ride
one, they only have to be passionate
about preserving and protecting our
motorcycling
FREEDOMS, so please keep that in
mind when recruiting new members.
(When you give out membership applications, please make sure you write
your name in the line that reads “Where
did you hear about ABATE?” to make
sure that you receive credit for signing
up that member.) If you need applications let me know, I have plenty to
spare!
The next River Valley Membership
Meeting is:
Wednesday May 4, 2016
7 PM
Beef O’Brady’s

(Next to the Jewel/Osco on Route 102)

going to be a great party. Grand National's is going well more to come.
Meeting for Grand National's always 3rd
Tuesday 6:30 Driftwood.
Off-Road event to be announced later
still looking for a committee please get
involved with all these events we really
need the help.
Hello brothers
and sisters. looks like Spring is finally
upon us and warm weather means good
riding weather. Save for the extremely
windy days in the beginning of April,
hopefully the wind will lay and the riding will be much more enjoyable. The
chapter made a donation to American
Legion Post 100 in Washington, IL. for
help in buying supplies to do repairs on
the Legion Hall building. Being as we
have our meetings there and not charged,
it the least we could do to help out. We
have our meetings there, second Sunday
of the month at 1pm.
We had our four chapter chili cook off
at Hogs N Dogs in March. We had a
great turn out and look forward to next
years event. The Rally in the Valley is all
set and all the bands have been lined up.
We still are looking for volunteers to
help out Friday and Saturday. If you can
give an hour or two it will be greatly
appreciated. It takes a lot of manpower
and volunteers to pull off a great event
and to make it fun. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this year and it is nice
both days.
Hope everyone has done the T_Clock
each time they begin their ride and make
sure you always have a extra jacket or
hoodie on the bike in case the weather
becomes cooler in the evenings. Also
keep hydrated and take frequent rest
stops to let the blood circulate through
your legs and feet to get back to riding
and be less fatigued. Hope to see you at
the next meeting. This is Snowman,
stands up, let's ride!!!!!

Spring is finally here and hoping that
mother nature will be good to us and
provide us with some beautiful weather
soon!!
By the time this article is printed, Central has had their first scheduled fun
run of the year. It was a very chilly
day for the Shake Down Ride but we
had a very good turnout. 2 wheels and
some 4 wheels came out for an afternoon of riding and a good
time. Thanks to all of our area bars
that provided us with super hospitality!! With our first ride we also started
the 2nanl Sore Bunz Mileage Run. It
will be interesting to see the miles
some riders will put on their bikes this
year. Also April 30th is our scheduled
Awareness Parade starting at Reimans
in Kewanee and traveling to Nees in
Galesburg. Sign up is 11 am till 1 pm
and bikes will roll out around 1:15
pm. Sunday May 1 is the State Awareness Ride to Springfield and I know
that Central will have some members
attending.
May brings us again to having our
yearly scheduled Windshield Wash on
Interstate 74 north of Woodhull May
7th. It is always a good day and great
way to promote awareness. May 21st
we will also be having our 2nd Fulton
County Youth Ride with sign up from
11 am till 1 pm at The Brown Jug in
Trivilo. This ride will have us traveling to different locations in Fulton
Brenda Leenerts
County. The proceeds for this ride go
to our 4 youth riders to help with some
of their expenses that they have during
their season!! Last year we endured
one of the roughest days of riding for
this and hopefully we have a beautiful
day and some great support for these
kids!! They are our future!! Heading
into June we will have our Shake
Down Ride on the 4th. Signup will be
at Nees from 11 am till 1 pm. Also in
the works we are going to have a bike
night this summer. June 10 we will be
at Gimpys in Rio, July 8th at The Corral in Galesburg and August 19th at
The Woodshed in Monmouth.
This year Central IL ABATE celebrates their 35th Bash August 2628. Mark your calendars now. Plans
are in the works to make this the best
yet. We are also raffling off another
883 Sportster. Tickets are available
up until the day that we draw. Tickets
are 2 for $5 or $3 each.
Our scheduled general membership
meeting is on the 2nd Sunday of the
month at Harley's Pub in Galesburg at
6 pm. BOD meeting is at 5 pm. Please
come and attend to see what the chapter is got in the works. As always we
also like to hear from everyone and
always looking for ideas/suggestions
on getting the word out about
ABATE!!! Also follow us on Facebook for any upcoming events and
chapter info.

Hello Everyone... Our
chapter is about to get busy, as we'll as, all
of the other chapters. If it ever warms up
outside, there will be a lot going on and
things to do. So, when you get back out
there, make sure your bike and your body
& mind are ready for riding. Please ride
safe and smart, watch for pot holes, grass
clippings, and stuff laying in the road that
could cause a accident, and as always,
watch out for cagers. I hope everyone can
attend the Safety Awareness Rally this
year. It's always a great event to attend.
There will be a list of our chapter events

After years of dedication to attending the

our Chapter, Larry (Hawkeye) Lieb is
finally turning it over. Thank you for all
your service as Board Rep Larry! Al Ragan and Ed Storm will be taking that position. Thank you guys, we hope you enjoy

We hope to see you there.

to use our facebook more effectively.
What has happened lately?
On Saturday, April 9th the Moonshine
Rally happened. I don’t know how it
turned out since it has not happened as of
this writing... but it is suppose to be cool
to cold. We will hope it is dry and everyone has a nice ride (and moonburger).
On Saturday, April 23rd the Blessing of
the Bikes took place at the Best Wedding
Chapel in Shelbyville. It hasn’t happened
yet either but I am sure there a good turnout. I enjoy seeing friends from the home
area as well as the neighboring chapters.
Liberty Chapter comes through and enhances the event by having their shakedown run. I hope you get to ride with
them for a while since I can’t, I get to
work.
The evening of April 23rd at the VFW
there was a big annual birthday celebration. Happy birthday Rick Wiley, Dennis

What is going on?
As in the past we are running around
Shelby County in March and April reaching out to each of the mayors in Shelby
County so that they, like our governor can
proclaim May as “Motorcycle Awareness
Month”. In 2015 100% of the Shelby
County mayors cooperated with that
awareness program. Good job to those
who went riding with a purpose (Rick
Wiley) and if you get a chance, thank
your local mayor. This year I am getting
helped out by Rick Wiley (again) and
Larry (Hawkeye) Lieb. Thanks guys!
Hopefully, like last year the Shelby County mayors are concerned about the safety
of motorcyclists in their communities.
Sunday May 1st is the Safety & Awareness Rally to the Capitol. Weather permitting it can be a great day. There are lots of
motorcycles to look at. There is a fun parade ride through Springfield ending at
the Capitol and a lot of riding to the event
and back.
On Sunday, May 23rd we will be joined
discussed and this is what is
planned. Our meeting will be at 10:30
before the start of the poker run at member Tony Shervino's Westside Bar at 119
W Oak Street in Watseka, IL. Sign up
for the poker run will start at 11 with a
$10 entry fee and kickstands up at
noon. Bikes, cars and trucks are all welcome. The stops will be Ne's Place in
Piper City, Kettle's Tap and Grill in Roberts, Lake Bar in Sibley, The Sand Trap
in Gibson City and member Tim Nolan's
Piper's Place in Rankin. We are looking
at a 100 plus miles run. Be ready for a
good ride. Piper's Place in Rankin, being
the last stop, will have food for us when
we get there.
We are piggy-backing our meetings with
events to help keep everyone's calendar
open. The June meeting will be before
the summer party at president Tom
Rutledge's house at 212 East Wyman St
in Hoopeston.
Yard signs (Watch For Motorcycles) are
available on a prepaid basis. T-shirts and
hoodies will also be ordered, also on a
prepaid basis.
Tell your friends about ABATE, recruit
new members and lets grow this chapter
into something. We are 207 members
strong right now. Being this is a group
activity,all members are encouraged to
attend the meetings and events. We can
surely use all input from everyone.

Hello everyone,
I must say this weather has been typical
for our area...doesn't really know what it
wants to do. Not a lot to report this month.
We are working on putting together a motorcycle run for the chapter on May 21st.
We are still hammering out the details for
the route. As in the past many of us will
be attending Summer boogie ( Eastern
party) which is also the East central ReAmerican Red
Cross –
Tracy Peterson spoke to the chapter to
answer questions about our upcoming
blood drive Aug. 19 at the VFW in Mattoon from 2-6 PM. A person can donate
blood six times a year. She thanked our
chapter for their willingness to sponsor a
blood drive.
Vice President –
3/20/16 I & Bonnie Brunson, attended a
safety motorcycle class at Coziahr Harley
Davidson dealership. About 40 others attended from area A.B.A.T.E. chapter. Jodi
West, from Prairieland ABATE, conducted
the class with Mike Koester, ABATE of
Illinois, Inc. Safety Coordinator. This class
was definitely worthwhile. A good presentation of this motorcycle awareness and
safety program. I would recommend others
to attend if they get the opportunity. Lessons were about T-clock checklist, awareness of motorcycle conditions, how to ride
smart, equipment, road hazards, rider impairment, proper signaling, defensive driving, and a lot more. So I sign out by stating, "MAKE SMART DECISIONS, ride
safe and be responsible for your ride.”

SB2841, provides that any person under
the age of 18 who is operating an offhighway vehicle on public land, shall be
trained and certified through a Stateapproved off-highway vehicle safety
course. The Legislative report was accepted.
There was no Safety And Education Report.
Al gave the Public Relations Report. Fliers
are up for the Broomstick Pool Tournament, and TV and radio spots are running
on local cable access and local radio stations. Al is going to Springfield to meet
with state officials about land for the ATV
Park. There was some discussion about
property. The Public Relations Report was
accepted.
Mark gave the Activities Report. There is
a Broomstick Pool Tournament at Scotty's
Place in Pontiac on Saturday April 16th.
Sign up is from 12pm to 1pm. Must be at
least 21 years of age to participate. The
Heartland Chapter Memorial Run is coming up on Saturday May 21st. The Activities Report was accepted.
There was no Membership Report.
Sylvie gave the Products Report. New
products that were ordered have arrived.
Prices from the vendor went up, so we
need to raise the sale prices. Older stuff
that isn't selling may be marked down to
help sell them. There was discussion about
finding another t-shirt maker that has lower prices. The Products Report was accepted.
Under Old And New Business, the chapter
bought raffle tickets for the East Central
Region raffle and won a 9mm pistol.
There was discussion about re-raffling the
gun to raise money. Need to talk to Scott
Carter about the legalities. A motion was
made to sell 500 tickets to re-raffle the
pistol. A chapter member offered to make
the tickets. Larry suggested getting tickets
from Office Max. The motion to re-raffle
the pistol was approved. Al will handle the
transfer to a local gun dealer. Chiggerfest
will be at a new location, moved from
Moores Mill to Ray's place. A question
was asked if we should have a greeter at
meetings. The Pontiac Sportsman's Club is
having a Mothers Day breakfast on Sunday May 8th.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:40pm.
The chapter thanks Elliott's Corner Junction in Pontiac for hosting our meeting.

Hi My Brothers & Sisters, Spring is here
and the rumble of bikes going past the
house is music to my ears. Please be
extra vigilant as the cagers aren't use to
us being out there with them. Have already picked up a couple of broke bikes,
so make sure to do your T-Clock checks
and do a short shake down ride. Have
seen several flyers for Rides and I encourage everyone to get out and support
the other chapters near you and to talk to
other riders about all that A.B.A.T.E. of
Illinois does for them. Invite other riders
to your Chapter events and meeting,
make them feel welcome and encourage
them to join and get involved
I want to remind folks that what we are
suppose to be about is motorcyclist
rights and a safer and free riding envi-
ronment. The Charity works that we do
are suppose to be a small part of what
we do and NOT the reason for being a
Chapter. We are a CHARITY and our
programs and FEDPAC & ABATEPAC
could use funds. Getting the word out
about Safety and Awareness is not
cheap and it cost to get our people to
political events. This being an election
year there are more fundraisers and opportunities to interact with our Repre-
Hello, Our regular monthly meeting was held on March
21st with 15 members and guest in attendance. Patty reported that we currently have 72 members, that’s not too bad,

event. T-shirts will be available the day
of the ride, there will also be music by
Hillbilly entertainment & an auction to
follow the ride. Anyone that can’t make
it to the ride can enjoy the meal, music &
auction for $6. Richland Memorial Hospital sent a thank you letter for the dona-
tion that was raised for Breast Cancer @
the “Bikers Loves Boobies Ride”. Larry
Leonard & Roxanna Behnke reported on
the State meeting and will be going to
the next one. Rob Chandler came and let
us all know about the “Paul Revere
Ride” that will be held on April 16th,
leaving Moto Mart @ 11 pm. This ride
ends in Vincennes, In. where all eat
breakfast together. There is no fee for
this ride, this ride used to be a project of
Brad “Tattoo” Koehler. A pork burger
sale is being planned for Friday, June
17th. This is to raise money for “The
Masters Hands” food bank, more details
to follow later. Looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting, so until

WOW!! What a
great month we had!! Our 30th Easter
Run to Choate Mental Health Center was
a huge success!! We were able to complete 250 bags containing 7 items each to
all the residents. That is no easy task!
Thanks to everyone who donated!!
Without donations this event would not
take place. Thanks to our Easter Bunny
( member Michelle) for doing such a
wonderful job with the residents! Our
bunny rides in with all the bikes as they
rev their engines. The residents absolutely love it! We had food and drinks. Plenty of laughter and enjoyment from all.
After everyone eats we offer rides on the
motorcycles for those residents that are
able. It is the highlight for the residents.
Some go 5-6 times! Overall, it was a
great day! Everyone who attended enjoyed the day. Thanks to those that gave
rides!
Our April meeting was held at Teddy's
in Herrin. Many rides were discussed
and our visit to Marion VA was set for
Saturday, April 30th at 9am. Everyone is
welcome to join to visit with our veterans. We will serve donuts, fruits, coffee,
sentatives both at the State and Federal

We as a group need to drop the bullshit
and game playing and get back to our
roots and our stated purpose a Free and
