the nation’s top freshman golfer and was
named SEC Player of the Year and Freshman
of the Year, all while garnering All-Region,
All-SEC, and 1st Team All-American honors.
His individual records for the year included
a new low-scoring average (70.44), four
victories, winning percentage (91.5 percent),
and counting scores (35).
Justin’s successes mark a truly amazing
freshman year! We can certainly imagine
that the best is yet to come.

Perfect Stroke
At the age of 16, Justin Thomas ’11
became the third youngest player in
PGA Tour history to make the cut at the
Greenbrier Classic. When he graduated
from Saint Xavier, he left with a myriad of
golf accolades, including KHSAA individual
and team titles, and a future that offered a
possibility for countless more. In his first year
at the University of Alabama, Justin wasted no
time adding to his amazing amateur golf
career. He shot a final round 68 to help
lead Alabama to the SEC team title and his
individual score of 7-under par 203 also
won him the individual SEC championship.
To cap off his phenomenal freshman
campaign, Justin earned the Haskins Award,
an honor bestowed upon the nation’s top
collegiate golfer. The award entitled him to an
exemption into the PGA Tour’s Greenbrier
Classic in early July where he finished 46th.
Justin had already been named the recipient
of the Jack Nicklaus Award by the Golf Coaches
Association of America. This prestigious
award is reserved for the National Player of
the Year. Continuing to pile on, he received
the Phil Mickelson Award presented to

Larry Bundschu ’66 has a singular goal
as an alumnus of Saint Xavier and that is to
make available to students the opportunity
to fly! After attending Vanderbilt University
and receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree
in sociology and psychology, Larry fulfilled
his military service obligation and became a
Navy transport pilot. This eventually led to a
career as a commercial pilot after first working
for the McDonnell Douglas Corporation.
In 1999, Larry and his father, Harry
Bundschu, also a licensed pilot, provided
funding to allow a St. X student to take
two flying lessons. The first recipient,
Casey Swindler ’00, utilized this aviation

experience prior to his entering the Naval
Academy. It also prompted the Bundschus to
establish an endowment at St. X to provide
an annual award of $1,000 toward flying
lessons for the student recipient(s) chosen
each year. Students are encouraged to apply
for the award by submitting an essay on why
they would like to learn to fly. Committee
members judge the essays and choose the
winners each spring. In addition to Larry,
members include: Natalie DeNardo (St. X
staff), Warren Snoddy, Jack Sweeney ’66,
Dave Swindler (St. X past parent), and Chris
and Cori Williams.
Larry, who is retired from Northwest Airlines
(now Delta Airlines) and living in Chicago, is
excited about the future of the endowment
that he and his late father established. He
hopes that other St. X alumni will share in his
vision to make the dream of flight a reality
for future Tigers.

A New Route
to Fatherhood
They are affectionately known as the
“Fab Five” by new parents Murphy
Antoine ’84, an architect and urban planner
in Washington, DC, and his wife, Laurie.
Just over one year ago, the Antoines made
it official. They adopted five sibling children
from Lithuania and became an instant family.
They certainly didn’t start out with the
intention of adopting five children. But,
then again, adoptions often take interesting
twists and turns. Knowing they’d like to try
international adoption, and with Murphy’s
grandmother from Lithuania, the Antoines
headed to the small town of Alytus in
October 2010. An American couple, who
had adopted Lithuanian siblings and also
volunteered in a local orphanage, knew of a
family of five children and introduced Murphy

and Laurie. The Antoines immediately fell
in love with the kids and quickly began
petitioning the Lithuanian legal system to
adopt the family.
Now, sisters Jurga (13), Evelina (10), and
Deimante (8), along with brothers Mantas
(12) and Dainius (9) are settling in to their
new American home with ease. Four are
playing youth soccer, two are reading
English at grade level, and two others
received academic honors last year.
The Antoines newfound family is a blessing and
a challenge, but they have the support of family
and friends to help. They have created a blog,
www.adventuresinfamilyland.wordpress.com,
to document their experiences.
Just last year, Murphy’s only worry was securing
Washington Nationals tickets. Now, he has
a teenager, and then some!

Yet another professional baseball player can
call St. X his alma mater. Justin Amlung
’08 was recently selected in the 12th round
of the Major League Baseball Draft by the
Chicago Cubs after completing his junior
season at the University of Louisville. His
honors include Big East Pitcher of the Year in
2012, First Team All-Big East and Third Team
Louisville Slugger All-America. After three
collegiate seasons, Justin finished 24-8 with
a 2.77 ERA and 240 strikeouts in 279.1
innings pitched. He ranks second at U of L in
career wins and ERA, and third in strikeouts.
For anyone following Justin during his senior
year at St. X, his collegiate success should
come as no surprise. His record was 7-1 with
a 1.55 ERA while garnering First Team AllState honors and MVP by then Head Coach
John Jefferson. It’s hard to believe that
this right-handed pitcher had considered
quitting baseball as a kid to focus more
on his golf game. Fortunately for baseball
fans, he had an older brother, Damon ’03.
The two spent countless hours throwing
the ball around and building up Justin’s
arm strength so much that he decided to
continue working on being a pitcher. Now
it looks as if graduate school and a career
as an architect—two goals of his—will
have to wait until his playing days are over!
And there’s no sign of that coming soon
as Justin is improving with time. In 2011,
he was selected in the 39th round of the
Major League Draft. His decision to return
for another season at U of L paid off…and
then some.

The Saint Xavier High School Tiger Chorus
took a trip of a lifetime this past June,
participating in an 11-day Choir Pilgrimage
to Italy, Austria and Germany. This choral
ensemble of 14 singers was led by German
teacher and Choir Director Rick Knoop and
accompanied by numerous parents, as well
as Theology faculty member Amy Brooks. The
group began in Rome, where it sang for the
Papal audience and served as the principal
choir at the Festival Mass of Corpus Christi
in St. Peter’s Basilica. It traveled to Assisi
and Venice and sang in the Basilicas of both
St. Francis (Assisi) and San Marco (Venice). The Tiger Chorus proceeded across the
southern Alpine chain of the Karawanken

The Borders Excellence in Teaching Award
was presented to Mark Saurer ’75,
mathematics teacher.
Mountains, and the pilgrimage continued
in the southern town of Klagenfurt, Austria.
There, it sang in the 13th century historical
church of St. Egid. The journey ended
in Munich, Germany, after having the
opportunity to sightsee.

Saint Xavier celebrated commencement
exercises on May 20 in Broadbent Arena.
The 140th graduating class of 326 young
men featured 27 students recognized by the
National Merit Corporation; nine Kentucky
Governor’s Scholars and a Kentucky
Governor’s School for the Arts Recipient.

The Paulie Walsh ’63† Volunteer
Service Award was presented to Alan
Gates ’75 at the annual Volunteer
Appreciation Reception on June 8, which
was held at Audubon Country Club. Named
for Paulie Walsh ’63, who is remembered as
embodying the true spirit of volunteerism,
the award recognizes an individual or group
for their “behind-the-scenes” efforts and
true devotion to the young men of St. X.
Alan has been generous with his time and
talent throughout the years. He has served
as Class Agent since 1999, leading the
effort to organize monthly class gatherings
and anniversary reunion celebrations, and
recruiting a crew of classmates to work the
alumni Phonathon each year. For his overall
commitment to the Class Agent Program,
Alan was the recipient of the William A.
Gates ’38† Outstanding Class Agent Award
in 2007. He has added countless hours
to his volunteer resume as a member of
the Alumni Association Board of Directors,
for which he is in his second term, and
as a member of the Alumni Phonathon
Leadership Team. For 14 years, Alan has
served as Shift Captain for the Alumni
Association Booth at the St. Joe Picnic.

Tradition of
Service in
Belize
Saint Xavier students demonstrate their
commitment to service throughout the year,
not just during the school year. Earlier this
summer, a group of students and faculty
volunteered their time in poverty-stricken
Belize helping a family establish a home.
Twelve students and two adults took a
week-long service trip to Belize City and
constructed a home for Clive Smith and
his two children, Kevin (13) and Kenya (7).
The St. X volunteers purchased supplies for
and constructed a 16-foot by 16-foot home
for the Smith family. Additionally, through
fundraising efforts, the group purchased
bunk beds for the children and a dining
room table and chairs.

A
fter returning to Louisville in the
summer of 2011, Dr. Darryl
Kaelin is where he had always
wanted to be, however he never anticipated
the journey that would lead him here. Kaelin
called his path back to Louisville a “long
and winding road,” and is excited to be
back in his native city after practicing
elsewhere to develop his medical and
leadership skills. He is currently the
Medical Director at the Frazier Rehab
and Neuroscience Institute, overseeing
the Division of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation in the Department of
Neurological Surgery at the University
of Louisville.
After graduating from St. X in 1983, Kaelin
went on to Notre Dame to play varsity
baseball while majoring in Pre-Med and
Psychology. Though the schedule was
demanding, Kaelin says it was worth it. He
learned not only about Psychology, but also
the “importance of balance” between the
intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual.
Sometimes this meant studying on the team
bus rides. Kaelin originally planned to do his
residency in Louisville after medical school,
but changed plans after a mentor prompted
him to “train elsewhere in order to bring
new ideas back.” Kaelin followed this
advice and it has led him down a different
path than he anticipated. After completing
specialty training in Virginia, he decided to
move his family to Indianapolis to help build
Indiana University’s Program.
However, he soon found himself enjoying
the neurological aspects of rehab more
than the musculoskeletal side. Kaelin
found the human brain “amazing”
and began dedicating more of his
time to this facet of his work.
His work eventually attracted
the attention of the Shepherd
Center in Georgia, one of
the largest neurological
rehabilitation centers in the
country. In 2005, he moved
to Atlanta and assumed
new responsibilities as
the Medical Director of
Brain Injury Programs and
Research. He enjoyed his
time there and helped grow
the Shepherd Center into
one of the nation’s premier
destinations for neurological
injuries. Throughout his entire
career though, Kaelin retained
a special place in his heart
for Louisville.
When the University of Louisville and Owsley
Brown Frazier combined to endow a chair
in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, a
national search was performed and Kaelin
was offered the job. He was ecstatic for the
opportunity, finally able to bring the many
skills he had learned back to his hometown.
At Frazier Rehab, Kaelin oversees the
development of the clinical and resident
teaching programs. He enjoys the work
because he is able to exercise creativity and
“put my fingerprint” on many things that
Frazier Rehab does. The best part of the job
is helping create “little miracles every day.”
Kaelin helps people regain their lost abilities
and takes pride in fostering their capacity
to walk and talk. His current position is
something of a dream job, allowing him to
explore his interest in the human brain while
simultaneously managing an organization
that helps a great number of people. Kaelin
says the many different places and people
he has worked with have helped him handle
the post, giving him a wide array of talents
that he uses to make Frazier Rehab thrive.
A Saint Xavier teacher once told Darryl,
“The world can take you a lot of different
directions if you let it.” This has proved
true throughout his medical career and
is still leading him down the path to new
and unexpected places. In 2011, Kaelin
rappelled down the 17-story Marriott hotel
in downtown Louisville to raise money for
the Special Olympics. This summer, Kaelin
has been invited to Fort Knox to reprise
his role as resident stunt man. He will be
skydiving with members of the armed forces
as part of an initiative to build relationships
with physicians who treat soldiers afflicted
with trauma and other psychological

injuries. In addition to his roles as a doctor
and daredevil, Kaelin enjoys spending time
with his family and going to Saint Xavier
and Notre Dame sporting events. His wife,
Brenna, is a nurse at Jewish Hospital and
daughter Audrey is studying health sciences
at U of L. Darryl’s son, Austin, is entering
his senior year at St. X and younger brother
Adam will be a freshman in 2013. Wherever
life takes Kaelin next, he will greet the
challenge with open arms, eager to improve
the lives of whomever he meets.

Competitive Golfers Needed for Shillelagh Cup

About the author: Ben Koch will be a
freshman at the University of Kentucky this
fall, studying business and engineering.
While at St. X, he ran cross country and was
a member of the Y-Club and the National
Honor Society. He won several essay contests,
including the Congressional Medal of Honor
Essay Contest and the Kentucky Secretary
of State Essay Contest.

Shillelagh Cup Coordinator Wes Orr ’97
hopes that a new date and new location
for the Shillelagh Cup will help draw
new golfers and enthuse veteran Cup
participants. The 13th annual contest
between the Alumni Associations from St.
X and Trinity will be played at Hurstbourne
Country Club on Monday, September 17.
The event is a match-play competition
modeled after the Ryder Cup. Talented
golfers are needed to compete in two-ball
and four-ball matches. While each team
needs a minimum of 36 golfers, Wes hopes
the event will grow to include 48 players
from each school. The Shillelagh Cup is
open to all golfers with a current USGA
handicap. The cost is $140 per player. After
twelve meetings, St. X and Trinity each have
five victories and there have been two ties
(2001 and 2002). For more information or to

Company for more than 20 years before his dad gave him
the keys to the family-owned Janes Brothers Hardware
Store in the Portland neighborhood. Bob operated the
family business until he retired and turned the store
over to his son. Bob and his wife, Mary Lynn, have three
children and nine grandchildren. They reside in the
Corydon, Ind., area, but they spend winters in Florida.

Adelberg is still active as the president of the R.P.
Adelberg Company. You may hear Bob’s melodious
baritone voice at Sunday Mass (Holy Spirit Church),

event. Bob was recently honored with a Life Membership
in the American Red Cross. He just completed a six-year
term on their Board of Directors. Bob has been an active

Dr. Ted Wendt announced his retirement as Associate
Vice President for Faculty Affairs at Fresno State University,
bringing to an end a career in higher education that
spanned 36 years. After attaining tenure and the rank of
Professor at California State University, Chico, Ted served
as an academic dean at Cameron University, Murray State
University, and the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. Ted
and his wife, Mary Sue Jackson, will continue to reside in
Modesto, Cal.

Bill Cooper was the recipient of the Kenneth J.
Marshall Award, one of two major awards presented
annually by the University of Louisville’s School of Justice
Administration Alumni Board. The award is given in
honor of a former faculty colleague who died an untimely
death. The recipient is chosen from Master’s candidates
graduating with a 3.5 or higher grade average and

Earl Winebrenner, Jr., died of cancer in 1996, but
was fortunate to live long enough to see the birth of his
grandson, Martin Winebrenner. Fifty years after Earl
left the Poplar Level Road campus as a graduate, his
grandson, Martin, joined the long list of Winebrenner
alumni as a member of the recent Class of 2012. Martin
was a third-generation graduate as his father, Earl
Winebrenner, III, was a graduate of the Class of 1982.

In April, Buck Rogers was presented the Larry West
Award at the annual conference of the Southern
Association of College Admission Counseling in Arlington,
Virginia. The award is based on longevity of service and
dedication to the organization, outstanding contributions
to the admissions counseling profession, leadership
within that profession and dedication to the students it
serves. Buck, who currently serves as Director of College
Guidance at McCallie, a college preparatory and boarding
school for boys in Chattanooga, Tenn., plans to retire in
December to be an independent college counselor.

St. Louis School of Law, where he was named a Scholar

Clark Burckle finally earned his moment in the spotlight
on June 29 competing in the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials
in Omaha, Neb. He swam the 200-meter breaststroke
in 2:09.97 to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics in
London. Stay tuned!

Robbie Denham is currently finishing his degree at
the University of Louisville and is a member of the U.S.
Air Force, Kentucky Air National Guard unit based in
Louisville. He was chosen to participate in an agricultural
mission trip to Afghanistan and will deploy December

Jim Ransdell recently received his bachelor’s degree,
summa cum laude, from Centre College, where he
majored in East Asian studies with minors in history and
German. He co-authored two articles, one for The AsiaPacific Journal: Japan Focus and one for The Southeastern
Review of Asian Studies. Jim served as president of his
fraternity chapter and during that time it was named both
