2. Area of Application
The quantity control of certain industrial liquids is an economic necessity considering the high value of
these products. The design and materials of the volume measuring instruments required for these
procedures have to be adapted to the particular operating conditions and characteristics of the liquids
to be measured.
The area of application for OV oval wheel meters includes the measuring, metering and controlling of
liquids. OV oval wheel meters meet all these requirements. They are mainly used for measuring liquid
gases, benzines (white products) and mineral oils.
OV oval wheel meters are manufactured with the nominal sizes 80 and 100 mm and can be used up
to PN 16 with a max. operating temperature of up to 60 °C.
OV oval wheel meters are extremely versatile, e.g. in the petrochemical industry for loading tank
trucks and oil tankers.
3. Principle of Operation and System Design
3.1 Measuring Principle
Oval Wheel Meter belong to the group of direct volumetric meters for liquids with movable partition
walls (displacement flow meters).
The Oval Wheel Meter consists of a measurement chamber housing with two pivoted oval wheels
which are toothed and roll off each other in counter-rotations.
The diagram displays oval wheel movement during the measurement process.
Each revolution the oval wheels displaces a discrete volume of liquid (defined by the space between
the oval wheel and measurement chamber) through the chamber.
Measurements are transmitted via a flag disk, which is attached to an oval wheel meter, to an
inductive sensor.

3.2 System Design
The oval wheel meters consist of the following components:
Meter:
Measurement of the liquid volume or the volumetric flow rate occurs via an oval wheel positive
displacement meter. Rotation of the oval wheel meter is sensed via the pulse pick-up.
Pulse pick-up AG 54:
The pulse pick-up consists of two standard inductive proximity switches with NAMUR output in
accordance with DIN EN 60947-5-6 and a slot disk attached directly to one of the oval wheels. The
slots are distributed around the circumference of the disk in such a way that volume proportional
pulses are generated. The pick-up operates wear-resistant. Since the pulse pick-up provides NAMUR
signals directly, separate pre-amplifier electronics are not required. These signals are processed and
evaluated in suitable flow computers.
Approval symbol for pulse pick-up AG54:
II 1G Ex ib II C T6
Resistance thermometer PT100:
The resistance measured by the PT100 is evaluated by appropriate evaluating units. The screwed
resistance thermometer PT100 has a temperature range of between –40 and 100°C. The PT100 is
located in a threaded, protective sleeve, its basic values have been engineered in accordance with
DIN EN 60751 and it is connected via 4-wire technology. (Approval symbol for PT100: According to
the manufacturer’s declaration in accordance with VDE 0165/Section 6.1.3.1.3 or EN 60079-11 a type
test is not required). These temperature sensors are passive electrical equipment.
