 Presidents Letter
Hi Gang,
 Meeting Minutes Aug
Well last months shop day was a little different, we had three venues for you all to take advantage of, Bob Haarer with the photography, Dick
Wetmiller with a great demo of turning off set letter openers, and I made a
streptohedron similar to the one pictured on the cover of the August American Woodturner. If you didn't find something of interest in that lash-up you
need to make suggestions of what you want this month. We had a good
wood raffle and I think everyone went home with something that hopefully
will inspire a new and great turning. Much thanks to those of you that assisted that day.

Treasurer’s Report - $2,915.02
Joe Montagnino had brought in a lot of Woodturner magazines for members to share. If you find you do
not need them any longer, please bring them to meetings to let others borrow them. Our own versions of
a lending library.
Oct. 11 will be the A.E. Backus Gallery 4 county juried show. Stop by the gallery and pick up info to submit
piece for judging.
Nov. 23-24 will be the Heathcote Botanical Gardens (HBG) Fall Festival and Jack has already secured a
booth for us to turn and for sales. Jack also told us that the monies we donated to Heathcote have helped
them out of their financial dilemma which will allow them to keep functioning. Jack said he had received a
nice thank you for our $500 donation.
Saturday at Jack’s will be this coming Saturday 9-Noon. Jack will do a demo on offset turning, Dick Wetmiller will demo a letter opener using an offset method, and Bob Haarer will demo photography techniques
for your turnings. We will also have a wood raffle with Avocado (from HBG), Mahogany, mystery wood
(stable, close grain, joy to turn), Acacia, and Rosewood.
Steve Estabrooks is responsible for the great new Newsletter and getting it out to the membership, and
Thom Sturgill is continuing to develop our website. Thom show us the website he has been working on
and showed us how members can utilize it, have their own gallery, sites of interest, other clubs in FL with
links to their websites, etc. Thom is doing an excellent job in making our website easily accessible to all
members and a source of our continuing education.
Jack has asked for members to volunteer to demonstrate their techniques at our “Saturday at Jack’s” and/
or to suggest demos they would like to see.

Saturday at Jacks
As Jack mentioned in his Presidents Letter, last months shop day was very insightful. You may
have noticed an improvement in our Show and Tell photos. We have a new backdrop and
lighting which makes a dramatic improvement to show our work. Additionally Bob had a
great demo where he explained the importance of lighting and background and many other
aspects of photography.
Jack demonstrated a turning a streptohedron as shown in August 2013 AAW magazine, (page
42) Also Capt. Eddie Castelin has a video for a similar project. I have attached the link at the
end of the newsletter.
Richard Wetmiller demonstrated some offset turning techniques and turned a letter opener.
In case you missed it there is a link to a YouTube video showing a similar demonstration.
