An Affiliate Chapter of the American Association of Woodturners Newsletter of the Treasure Coast Woodturning Guild August 2013 In this issue: L e t t e r f ro m t h e P re s i d e n t Presidents Letter Hi Gang, Meeting Minutes Aug Well last months shop day was a little different, we had three venues for you all to take advantage of, Bob Haarer with the photography, Dick Wetmiller with a great demo of turning off set letter openers, and I made a streptohedron similar to the one pictured on the cover of the August American Woodturner. If you didn't find something of interest in that lash-up you need to make suggestions of what you want this month. We had a good wood raffle and I think everyone went home with something that hopefully will inspire a new and great turning. Much thanks to those of you that assisted that day. 2013 Show and Tell Future Events Woodturning articles Saturday at Jack’s Officers/Contact People We have some Florida maple, more mahogany and of course rosewood and a few other interesting woods to raffle off this month so save up and you may get lucky. I don't have a video or program planned for Tuesday night but I am sure Thom or Reed will bring something, We need a project to demo for the Shop day at my house Saturday the 21st. Perhaps a pepper grindWe meet the 3rd Tues- er,wine glass stem or something that our new people can accomplish on smaller lathes. I can go over sharpening your tools and re profile any tools day of every month at that need work. We are open for suggestions so think about it. I would like IRSC Tech Campus at to try and have at least two demos to chose from on Saturday. Jim Pruitt had 2 more vertebra fused in his back. Bob Sande has throat/esophagus cancer. Treasurer’s Report - $2,915.02 Joe Montagnino had brought in a lot of Woodturner magazines for members to share. If you find you do not need them any longer, please bring them to meetings to let others borrow them. Our own versions of a lending library. Oct. 11 will be the A.E. Backus Gallery 4 county juried show. Stop by the gallery and pick up info to submit piece for judging. Nov. 23-24 will be the Heathcote Botanical Gardens (HBG) Fall Festival and Jack has already secured a booth for us to turn and for sales. Jack also told us that the monies we donated to Heathcote have helped them out of their financial dilemma which will allow them to keep functioning. Jack said he had received a nice thank you for our $500 donation. Saturday at Jack’s will be this coming Saturday 9-Noon. Jack will do a demo on offset turning, Dick Wetmiller will demo a letter opener using an offset method, and Bob Haarer will demo photography techniques for your turnings. We will also have a wood raffle with Avocado (from HBG), Mahogany, mystery wood (stable, close grain, joy to turn), Acacia, and Rosewood. Steve Estabrooks is responsible for the great new Newsletter and getting it out to the membership, and Thom Sturgill is continuing to develop our website. Thom show us the website he has been working on and showed us how members can utilize it, have their own gallery, sites of interest, other clubs in FL with links to their websites, etc. Thom is doing an excellent job in making our website easily accessible to all members and a source of our continuing education. Jack has asked for members to volunteer to demonstrate their techniques at our “Saturday at Jack’s” and/ or to suggest demos they would like to see. Take appropriate cautions when you turn. Safety guidelines are published online. Following them will help you continue to enjoy woodturning Safety guidelines are published online 8 August 2013 Treasure Coast Woodturners Guild Saturday at Jacks As Jack mentioned in his Presidents Letter, last months shop day was very insightful.You may have noticed an improvement in our Show and Tell photos. We have a new backdrop and lighting which makes a dramatic improvement to show our work. Additionally Bob had a great demo where he explained the importance of lighting and background and many other aspects of photography. Jack demonstrated a turning a streptohedron as shown in August 2013 AAW magazine, (page 42) Also Capt. Eddie Castelin has a video for a similar project. I have attached the link at the end of the newsletter. Richard Wetmiller demonstrated some offset turning techniques and turned a letter opener. In case you missed it there is a link to a YouTube video showing a similar demonstration.
