VOLUME 4 ISSUE 3! NOVEMBER 6, 2013 Mid Minnesota Association of Woodturners ‘Shavings’ Providing an environment of interest and activities dedicated to the enjoyment of wood turning activities and to promote woodturning to the local community through education and charitable events. From The President Reflect, as defined by Webster, has seven different meanings with several references to the meaning of each. Some deal with light as it deflects off a mirror and sound as it bounces off water causing ripples to occur. One of the other meanings of reflect that one cannot see or hear is soul, heart or mind. For me, over the last twelve months my family and I have been blessed with good health. As far as the club is concerned, we have been blessed as well. The MMAW was well represented at the wood Expo, Empty Bowls and at Art Crawls. We had our first gallery event, Beneath the Bark, held in Studio C with all three woodworking clubs participating. Liam O’Neil of Ireland demonstrated how he turns a bowl. This was the first time the MMAW has had a professional turner demonstrate locally, hopefully not the last. All of the above mentioned items just didn’t happen by themselves, they took time and effort by many different club members. So in many ways looking back is looking ahead. November 9 The MMAW April Membership Meeting will be held at the Visual Arts Center (VAC) in the lower level of the Paramount Theatre, Downtown St. Cloud. The meeting starts at 9:30 AM. Please bring anything you have turned, a bowl or other creation to share with the membership. Dues must be paid by Saturday Nov. 9 in order to remain a MMAW member and to continue receiving club e-mails. This year we are on our way to having a fairly good start on on the Empty Bowls event. Approximately 90 blanks have been cut and about 30 rough turned but we still need many more bowls. Place of Hope (recipient) and Calvary Church, who are hosting the Empty Bowls event, have asked us to think about doing some sort of demo the day of their big event. The Art Crawl November 8th from 5pm to 9pm is just ahead and is an opportunity for you to showcase your work at the Paramount. See you on the 9th providing you aren’t in a tree stand. Jerry Wervey MMAW President Reminders Beneath the Bark was a huge success. Thank you to all the members who participated by showing their work as well as visiting the show. The exhibit ran through Saturday November 2nd. Those of you who had pieces in the show should have picked them up on Monday November 4th or Tuesday November 5th. If you didn’t pick them up on one of these dates, please contact Derick Segerstrom at [email protected] or (320) 257-5928 . Make arrangements with Derick to pick them up. On Wednesday November 6th we’ll be roughing out for Empty Bowls at the Paramount from 10:00 till 2:00. Bring your own tools and let’s make some fun! This may be the last opportunity for this year. Don’t forget The next Art Crawl is Friday November 8th, 2013 from 5-9pm. Dues are due! Renew your membership by Nov.9 so you can remain on our email distribution list. ! He has several short videos for view at:http://woodturning.org Look under education. There are 28 videos, many listed as fundamental. Most are between 3 minutes and 15 minutes.
