NEWS FROM AROUND THE GREENS
As March came to a close, so did the end of the Premier
League, Premier 7’s and Ladies Super Challenge seasons.
A very successful year was had here at the ‘Hawks Nest’
with both our Premier Team and Premier A Grade
finishing the regular home and away season as Minor
Premiers. Our Premier Team went on to win back to back
)tles, a*er defea)ng the Pine Rivers Pirates in the Grand
Final by 5 shots on their home ground. This is the 7th
Queensland Premier League Championship to be brought
home to our club, making us the most successful team in
PLQ history. Unfortunately our A Grade side couldn’t
quite make it a back to back double, going down in their
Grand Final to local rivals, the South Tweed Sharks, by 22
shots.
Bre= Wilkie, Mark Casey and Lynsey Clarke all travelled
to Christchurch in March to take on the kiwis in the
annual Trans Tasman Test Series which was televised live
on Sky Sports and also live streamed on the internet. The
men were successful in winning their series 2-1, the
women went down in their series 2-1, but both teams
combined to secure the overall Trans Tasman Shield
victory for Australia.
In Premier 7’s we had four of our seven teams make their
way through the rounds and win spots in the finals
stages. Both Division 3 and both Division 5 teams earned
their qualifying spots, unfortunately with our Division 5
teams drawing each other in the quarter final. Our
Division 5 Sec)on 7 team were the only team to make
the Grand Final stage, where they were just pipped at the
post by another local rival, Southport, 2 rinks to 1. Well
done to all our Premier 7’s teams and players, especially
those in Div5/Sect7 who went through the en)re season
undefeated all the way through to the Grand Final where
they just went down.
And finally in the Ladies Super Challenge Silver Division,
our Ladies team was overtaken in the last few rounds
where they eventually finished the regular home and
away season in 6th posi)on on the ladder. Again
congratula)ons to all players, managers, reserves and
supporters for another successful season for everyone
here at Club Helensvale. Thankyou for your )me and
contribu)on represen)ng our club in a great manner.
In some big news for our club, at a media launch held at
Broadbeach Bowls Club on Thursday 12th March, Club
Helensvale was officially announced as one of three host
clubs for the 2020 World Bowls Championships.
Musgrave Hill and Broadbeach will be the other two
venues that will share in the hos)ng rights and privileges
of this pres)gious event.
Our player probe is back! With some new recruits to our Hawks nest over the past 12 months it’s about time we got to know them a bit better

Nathan Rice competed in the lucra)ve Richmond Union
Master Singles event which was held from the 20th – 27th
March. Nathan was in fantas)c form during this event,
where he reached the final. A fantas)c display of bowls
from both Nathan and his opposi)on, state player Aaron
Wilson, was a fiDng end to the event – which saw
Nathan just pipped at the post going down 25-16.
Our Ladies B Grade Triples Champions were finalized at
the end of March with Margaret Donaldson, Joy Whelan
and Deryl Hardy crowned our newest champions. The
girls defeated Tanya Kiepe, Dawn Wilson and Pat Dodd in
a quality final that was shot for shot and only a couple of
points separa)ng both teams at any one )me.
Deryl’s team struck on the 20th end with a
vital count of 3 and finished up winning the
Lynsey Clarke
match 16-13.

BOWL SPEED AND FOLLOW THROUGH
Bowl speed - the speed that the bowl will travel towards the
head is generated by the pendulum arm swing and forward
body movement. All movement should be as natural and easy
as possible. Bowl speed is both a mental and physical process.

Concentrate on how far then how fast - focus on the
finishing point of the bowl ‘judgment of speed’ during
the pre shot rou)ne.
•
Adjust the speed of delivery according to the result of
the previous bowls.
•
If your bowl is too long - bowl a li=le slower by slowing
down the delivery ac)on.
•
If it is too short - bowl a li=le faster by quickening the
delivery ac)on.
•
The body ac)on consciously responds to the thought
pa=ern to provide consistency.
•
The speed of the bowl is controlled by the arm speed,
which in turn controls body movement and amount of
momentum being generated.
Therefore controlling the arm speed is the most important
factor in the delivery ac)on!

Follow through—essenal for consistency.
Editor
Lynsey Clarke
Complete the follow through with the bowling arm following
behind the bowl, down the intended line, finishing in a
horizontal posi)on. Correct follow through is important to
maintain consistency of line and speed. A number of players
develop bad habits at bowl release and follow through.
It has been another fantastic
month for bowls, the
Helensvale Hawks are
unstoppable and we are all so
proud of the bowls
achievements so far this year
with much more to come! A
special congratulations to our
Premier League side, quite an
achievement to be the most
successful team in PLQ history
I’m sure you all agree! Hawks
flying high!

What a fantastic turn out we
had the for the Mitsubishi ASX draw on Sunday 19th
March. Congratulations to our winner Glenys. She was
only the third finalist to pick a key and what a great
pick! The room erupted when they realised she was
the winner and it was great to see that the crowd was
so happy for her. We hope you enjoy driving around in
your new car Glenys and thank you to Von Bibra
Helensvale for another great car draw.
CONGRATULATIONS
GLENYS!

The 25th April we will commemorate the ANZAC Centenary with a dawn service at the rear of the car park.
The North Gold Coast RSL Sub Branch has another
moving service planned with special guests including
Stuart Robert MP, Michael Crandon MP and CR
William Owen-Jones. The service commences at
5.20am with a traditional gunfire breakfast to follow at
blu bistro. As we are expecting a larger than usual turn
out we will do our best to accommodate all attendees,
however we do ask for patience on this special day.
If you enjoy a flutter you will love our new gaming
promotion Lucky Fortunes. Each Sunday two members
will be drawn between 2-4pm and will win $100 each.
Then on 31st May at 4.00pm all 18 finalists will smash
open a giant fortune cookie to reveal a cash prize.
With a major prize of $10,000 and over $25,000 in total
prize money this is going to be a lot of fun with lots of
lucky winners!
Wishing you all a great Easter long weekend and great
April!
