Keep Pounding has become a Carolina Panthers mantra
in honor of late Panthers player and coach Sam Mills.
Mills first used the phrase “Keep Pounding” as a coach,
in an emotional speech to the team prior to the Jan. 2,
2004 Panthers vs. Cowboys playoff victory. Mills spoke
about commitment, dedication to teammates, team
effort and never giving up.he asked players to “Keep
Pounding.” Immediately following the coin toss, please
turn your attention to the 20-yard line at the Southeast
end of the stadium. Today’s Keep Pounding Drummer is
Jimmie Johnson.
Jimmie Johnson is a six time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
Champion. He won a record five championships in a
row from 2006-2010 and in 2009 he was named the
Associated Press1 Male Athlete of the Year. Through the
Jimmie Johnson Foundation he has given back more
than $1 Million to the Charlotte community helping K-12
public education.

Rabbi Yisrael Levin
Rabbi Yisrael Levin was born in
Israel in a small town outside of Tel
Aviv, he attended a Jewish religious
Schools (Yeshivah) in a nearby
City – Lud, and in the city Migdal
Haemek in the north part of the
country. After coming to the US, he
attended The Rabbinical College
“Ohelei Torah” in Brooklyn NY, followed by two years of travel to London, England and Toronto,
Ontario, Canada, to assist at the local schools. He is married
to Leah and together they have three children. In 2008, he
moved from New York to Charlotte, N.C., and together with
his wife they opened the Ballantyne Jewish Center, which is
affiliated with the Chabad Lubavitch movement, the largest
Jewish outreach organization in the World with over 2,000
branches around the globe. In the seven years of work here
in the Ballantyne Area, they established a Synagogue, a
religious school, a summer camp and an adult education
system that serves the Jewish population in Ballantyne, Waxhaw and Weddington in North Carolina, as well as Fort Mill
and Indian Trail in South Carolina.

• Kuechly was named 2013 AP Defensive Player of the
Year one season after earning 2012 AP Defensive Rookie
of the Year. He is the first player to earn AP Defensive
Rookie of the Year and AP Defensive Player of the Year in
consecutive years since Lawrence Taylor of the New York
Giants in 1981 and 1982.
• Since entering the NFL in 2012, press box crews have
credited Kuechly with 452 tackles, the most in the NFL.
This season, Kuechly leads the NFL with 132 stops based
on press box statistics. He has produced double-digit
tackles in six games.
• Kuechly tied the NFL single-game record with 24
tackles (based on press box statistics) vs. New Orleans
(12/22/13).

RIVERA
HEAD COACH
Ron Rivera was named the fourth coach in Carolina Panthers history on January 11, 2011. In 2013, his third year with the
Panthers, Rivera led Carolina to 12 wins, the NFC South division title and its first playoff appearance since 2008. After
starting the season with a 1-3 record, the Panthers won 11 of their final 12 regular season games – including a franchise
record eight-game winning streak – to secure the No. 2 seed in the NFC and a first-round bye. In recognition of that success,
Rivera was named NFL Coach of the Year by the Associated Press. Carolina’s record has improved every season under Rivera. Before joining the Panthers, Rivera served two stints as a defensive coordinator, first with the Chicago Bears from 200406 and then with the San Diego Chargers from midway through the 2008 season until the end of 2010. Rivera also coached
as an assistant with the Chargers, the Bears, and the Philadelphia Eagles. A second-round draft choice of Chicago in 1984,
Rivera played nine seasons as a linebacker with the Bears and was a member of the Super Bowl XX championship team.

HEAD COACH
Lovie Smith was named the 10th head coach in franchise history on January 2, 2014. Smith joined the Buccaneers after having
spent nine seasons as the head coach of the Chicago Bears (2004-2012). During his tenure, Smith led Chicago to an 81-63 (.563)
regular season record, while going 3-3 in the postseason. He led the Bears to three division titles, two NFC Championship Game
appearances and the 2006 NFC title, which propelled Chicago to its first Super Bowl appearance in 21 years. Smith left Chicago
ranked third all-time in coaching victories, behind only Hall of Famers George Halas and Mike Ditka. Prior to his time with Chicago,
Smith spent three seasons as the defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams (2001-03). Smith began his NFL career in Tampa Bay,
working on Tony Dungy’s staff (1996-2000).

Q&A with KAWANN SHORT
This week, GameTime catches up with secondyear defensive tackle Kawann Short. Short,
the Panthers’ second-round draft choice,
talks about his charity work in his hometown
of East Chicago, Ind., and his development
between his first and second year.
Growing up back in East Chicago, who was
your role model that helped keep you on
the right track?
I would say my family, but more specifically
my oldest brother, he’s been my father
figure. While playing sports, it’s been my
coaches and they helped me stay on track.
They saw a bright future in me even though
I didn’t see it back then. I stuck with it and
trusted their word and became who I am
today.

you instituted this past year?
I started it pretty much for just the kids back
in East Chicago, Indiana. Growing up there
weren’t many people who left Chicago and
came back. Some of these kids are growing up
without a mother or a father and just to go back
and give back and distribute books was just a
positive role to do. It was just one thing that I felt
would be a big success back in East Chicago.
How essential has your charity partner Cathleen
Laporte been to the success of your program?
I could probably give her 95 percent of the success.
She helped me every step of the way and guided me
for what I needed to do and helped me understand
what were going to be the ups and the downs. She
basically told me to stick to it and trust her word
so that’s what I did and it became a huge success. It’s been blowing up with popularity and a
lot of people have been reaching out and thanking
me and writing thank you cards. It feels good to
have that acknowledgment behind my back but I
couldn’t have done it without her.
How exciting is it to have the popularity with the
kids when you go back?
It’s really cool. I’ve served as principal for the day
at each of the schools in East Chicago. It’s good
because they are able to see that I wasn’t too good
for them to come back and show these guys my
support and not charge anything for it.
Why did you choose to focus on giving back to
the children of Chicago?
You’ve got to start young. A lot of these guys
haven’t had role models and if they did they
weren’t paying attention. Every kid wants somebody outside their family to guide them and that is
what we don’t realize until we are past that age of
getting advice from older people. That is one thing
that I learned fast, if we set the message now with
these younger kids then it’s going to do nothing
but grow and become word of mouth.
Knowing what you’ve been through and where
you’ve come from, what advice would you offer
the younger generations of today?
Never give up. It is going to be tough and hard.
You are going to hear that you can’t do this or you
can’t do that. It’s all about how far you want to
go with it, don’t give up, that is one thing that I
reiterate. I could’ve given up a long time ago and I
would’ve never become what I am now. Just sticking to what I know now and just having a positive
mindset is going to get you far
How has Coach Washington helped develop your
game since you entered the league?
He has improved my game 100 percent, I am so
happy I came to Carolina under Coach Washington. I love coming in early in the morning and

meeting with him and having someone that knows
the potential that I have and he sees it in me. That
is the start, a lot of people see it in you but it is
up to you to bring it out. When we go back and
watch film he is showing me what I need to do
and he helps me take that from the film study out
onto the field.
What’s it been like moving around on the defensive line this season and becoming an everydown starter?
It’s been fun and challenging as well but I am here
to take on the challenge. Nothing is too easy or too
hard, I just have the faith that I can do it. Having
everybody behind me like my teammates and the
defensive line and the coaching staff means a lot
and drives me to never let them down.
The fans see the whole defensive line decked out
in those “G2X” t-shirts during pre-game warmups, what do those symbolize and how did that
come about?
It’s what we are trying to get to as far as the defensive lineman are concerned and that is the
quarterback. X marks the spot and the quarterback is the X and we’ve got to get to it.
As you are getting towards the end of your
second NFL season, who have you looked to as
a mentor during your short time in the League?
As far as my position, Colin Cole, Dwan Edwards
and Charles Johnson have all the acknowledgement
and all the stats behind them. Watching how they
work and asking them questions, they are there to
help you out tremendously.
Where do you think you’ve developed and
improved the most from year one to year two?
My IQ is better and my football game is better so
it is all slowing down for me. I’m able to relate to
things better and pull from my past experiences.
I’ve really been working hard at studying my game
and paying attention to the details.
Like fellow teammate Brandon Williams, you
used to play basketball, what prompted the
switch and commitment to football?
Everybody wants to be that NBA player when they
are growing up and I just played in the backyard
with my brothers. Indiana is not a big state for
football, it is more so for basketball. I went out
and started playing football my eighth grade year

and never turned back after that. I was skeptical
about it going into my freshman year, I didn’t start
off hot but then I jumped back into it. It wasn’t
easy but it was more like this is what I should be
doing as far as my size and height and powerful
speed. I stuck with the basketball but during my
junior year I decided that football was what I really
wanted to do. I still play basketball but just to stay
in shape.
What kind of activities or hobbies do you involve
yourself in off the field?
I’m more of a chill guy, during the offseason I will
go shoot some hoops with my brothers. When I am
back in Indiana I usually go out to the recreation
centers and help out with them.
What is your favorite holiday treat?
Definitely red velvet cake but if I’m at home it is
my grandma’s banana pudding.

THE TOPCATS
The 2014 team is proud to welcome back
the Carolina Panthers Cheerleaders –
the TopCats. The TopCats, ranging in
age from 21–30, represent all regions
across the Carolinas. They hold careers
in a variety of distinguished professions, including nursing, law, marketing, engineering and teaching. The TopCats are visible at corporate and charitable events
throughout the Carolinas, as well as at Bank of America Stadium where they help
cheer the Panthers to victory and entertain fans at every home game.
Auditions for the TopCats are a comprehensive and intense process. Out of over
100 initial contestants, the final squad of 25 ladies was chosen based on their
personalities, showmanship, dance skills, professionalism and physical fitness.
Richelle Williams is the Choreographer and Manager for the TopCats. She joined
the TopCats staff in 2005, after dancing with the team for five years. She was
a cheer instructor for Universal Cheerleaders Association, and she also cheered
at the University of South Carolina where she earned a BA degree in Mass
Communications.
Shannon McClattie serves as the TopCats Assistant. She was a member of the
TopCats Squad for 11 years and was named cheerleader of the year in 2004 and
represented the organization at the 2005 Pro Bowl. Shannon was a game day field
assistant for four years before joining the TopCats staff. She graduated from Fort
Valley State University earning a BA degree in Criminal Justice. She was also a
member of the Fort Valley State dance team.
Kate Milstead, the Entertainment Assistant, is responsible for booking all community and corporate appearances for Sir Purr, the TopCats, and PurrCussion.
Kate interned in the Community Relations Department in 2010 before joining the
Entertainment staff full-time in 2012. She graduated from Florida State University
where she was also a member of the women’s soccer team.

THE TOPCATS
KATIE (left) an Illinois native, is in her fourth season with the TopCats. She graduated from
the Aveda Institute with a degree in Esthiology, and also attended Grace Medical to become
a Medical Esthetician. Katie is now the Office Manager for a company that provides hair
restoration and hair replacement to cancer and alopecia patients. In addition to dancing,
Katie was a competitive figure skater for 17 years. She enjoys reading, running, cooking and
boating on Lake Wylie with her family. Katie hopes to one day travel the world and have a big
family. Her favorite charities are the ASPCA and American Cancer Society
TIFFANY (center) begins her first season with the TopCats. She is a graduate of the University
of South Carolina and Queens University of Charlotte and is currently a nurse. She has also
worked as a competitive cheerleading coach for the past five years, focusing on providing
instruction in tumbling, stunting, and team building to local cheerleaders. Aside from spending time with family and friends, Tiffany enjoys being outdoors, such as hiking Crowders
Mountain or spending the day at the National White Water Center. Her favorite charity is
March Forth with Hope, which is a local charity that provides financial assistance to families
affected by cancer.

SALLIE (right) begins her rookie season with the TopCats after graduating from the University
of South Carolina. An aspiring event planner, she now helps plan and coordinate leadership
conferences throughout South Carolina as an Assistant Director of Leadership. In her free
time, Sallie likes to be with her family and hang out at the lake. Sallie’s favorite charity is the
United Way, as she appreciates how they change lives and inspire others.

The Carolina Panthers High School Coach of the
Week program recognizes high school coaches
who, through their hard work and dedication to
young people, have made a difference in the
lives of their players, school and community.
This program also provides high schools with
financial assistance to help maintain and upgrade their football programs.
In recognition of Coach Blackston, the Carolina Panthers will donate $1,000 to Belton-Honea Path High School to support the school’s
athletic department. Coach Blackston and
the other 2014 Carolina Panthers High School
Coach of the Week honorees will all be recognized during a Panthers home game later this
season.

program is designed to recognize and reward
North and South Carolina high school coaches
who have created successful programs for

player health and safety.

The Carolina Panthers are proud to announce
the selection of Coach Russell Blackston of
Belton-Honea Path High School (SC) as the
team’s tenth High School Coach of the Week
for the 2014 season. Coach Blackston is in his
fifth year as head coach of Belton-Honea Path
and fifteenth year with the program.
Coach Blackston spent ten seasons as an
assistant coach at Belton-Honea Path serving a multitude of roles for the Bears. During
that time, the Bears won seven SC Region l
championships and the 2004 Class AAA State
Championship. Blackston took over the program in 2010 and has maintained Bear excellence while posting a record of 49-14. This
season, Blackston led the Bears to a 9-5 record and the South Carolina Class AAA Quarterfinals.
Blackston’s roots run deep in the Honea Path
community. His annual summer football
camps help instill the same solid principles
he expects from Bear student-athletes. As the
school’s athletic director, he has helped create
a strong school and community bond by making facilities available to recreation and youth
leagues. “You would be hard pressed to find

32 Player Nominees For First NFL Sportsmanship Award Announced
The 32 player nominees for the first NFL Sportsmanship Award have been finalized, the NFL announced. Each NFL
team nominated one of its players for the award, which will recognize annually NFL players who exemplify outstanding
sportsmanship on the field. Thomas Davis is the Carolina Panthers nominee.
The winner of the NFL Sportsmanship Award will be determined by a vote of current NFL players. A panel of former
players from the NFL Legends Community will select from the 32 nominees eight finalists (four in the AFC; four in the
NFC). The panel is comprised of Warrick Dunn, Curtis Martin, Karl Mecklenburg and Leonard Wheeler.
The eight finalists will be listed on the Pro Bowl ballot under the NFL Sportsmanship Award when the players vote on
December 19. From the eight finalists, each team’s players will submit a consensus vote of its choice for the winner.
As in Pro Bowl voting, a team cannot vote for its own player.
The award will be presented each year to an NFL player who best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship,
including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition.
The winner selected by the vote of the players will be announced during the nationally televised “4th Annual NFL
Honors” show on Saturday, January 31 on NBC, the night before Super Bowl XLIX. He will receive a $25,000 donation
from the NFL Foundation to a charity of his choice. He also will be presented with a trophy that will capture the
important role that sportsmanship plays in the game and how NFL players that demonstrate integrity and honor on
the field serve as role models for other players at all levels.

Stadium Security Personnel will respond to complaints
of misconduct. Patrons who fail to comply with Stadium
Policy after being warned will be subject to ejection or
arrest. Acts such as fighting, being abusive to others,
being intoxicated, throwing objects, or committing other
acts that may injure other patrons or disrupt the progress
of the game may result in ejection and/or arrest without prior warning. Violations by Permanent Seat License
holders or their guests may result in the revocation of the
Permanent Seat License and ticket privileges.

Fans who require assistance with unruly patrons should
contact a member of the stadium staff, a Charlotte
Mecklenburg police officer or report it anonymously by

PROHIBITED ITEMS
To ensure that all fans have a safe and enjoyable visit
to Bank of America Stadium, the following items are not
permitted in the stadium:
Prohibited items that are discovered during security
inspections at the stadium entrances must be either
returned to the owner’s vehicle or discarded. Unlawful
items that are discovered during security inspections
are subject to confiscation, and the person in possession
of those items may be denied entrance into the stadium
and is subject to arrest. Any prohibited item discovered
inside the stadium is subject to confiscation.
Items that will be permitted but will be inspected at bag
check locations prior to entry:

Any transparent plastic, vinyl, or PVC bag no larger
than 12” x 6” x 12”

Purses, bags or clutches no larger than 4.5” x 6.5”
•
Containers for medical supplies or special food
items for diabetics (Please contact the Director of
Security at 704-358-7000 for more information on
the approval process)

Fans are encouraged not to bring any bags or items that
need inspection as our goal is to get all patrons in the
stadium as quickly as possible.
DESIGNATED DRIVER
Panthers fans are the best fans around! That’s why the
Carolina Panthers and Anheuser-Busch have teamed up
to implement the Good Sport program as a thank you to
fans who respect the rights of others, drink responsibly,
and designate a driver during today’s game.
Fans who volunteer to be a designated driver have a
chance to win free Panther’s merchandise and other
gifts. Fans can enter to win at the Panther’s Good Sport
designated driver sign up carts located in concourses
near secctions 106, 123 and 513, so sign up and win
today!
NFL BAG POLICY
In order to increase public safety and to expidite fan entry
into stadiums, the NFL requires all Stadiums to enforce
a specific bag policy for patrons, media, and employees.
All non-transparent bags or items including backpacks,
binocular/camera cases, cinch bags, computer bags,
diaper bags, fanny packs, purses larger than 4.5” x 6.5”
are now prohibited at Bank of America Stadium. Any
transparent plastic, vinyl, or PVC bag no larger than 12”
x 6” x 12” or purses, bags or clutches no larger than 4.5”
x 6.5” are permitted in to the stadium. All approved bags
and purses will continue to be subjected to additional
screening measures
RECYCLING
The Carolina Panthers recycle all cans, bottles, and
cardboard generated inside the stadium. In addition, the
Carolina Panthers have partnered with Bojangles, Center
City Partners and Keep Mecklenburg Beautiful in order
to increase our recycling footprint. Volunteers canvass
parking lots within a four block perimeter of the stadium
in order to provide information regarding the program.
Fans parking in participating lots are handed a yellow
bag for cans, bottles and/or cardboard as they enter the
lot. As fans head into the stadium, they can drop off the
bags at a designated curb location in each lot. The City
of Charlotte then picks up the bags and takes the recyclables to the Mecklenburg Recycling Facility (MRF).
Thank you Panthers fans for making today’s game a safe
and enjoyable time for everyone.
RE-ENTRY
Persons leaving Bank of America Stadium during an
event will not be permitted to re-enter.
EMERGENCY CARE
Emergency Care Centers are located on the 100 level
across from sections 109-110 and 133-134, on the 300
level across from suite 310A and on the 500 level across
from sections 511-512 and 543-544. Registered nurses,
doctors, paramedic units and an emergency medical
technician are on duty. In addition, two roving teams of
paramedics are on the club level.
SEAT CUSHIONS / PADS
As part of the new NFL bag policy, seat cushions with
covers, zippers, clasps, pockets or any other device that
would allow concealment of any items are prohibited at
Bank of America Stadium. Closed cell seat pads without
covers, zippers, clasps, pockets or any other device that
would allow concealment of any items are permitted into
the stadium.
GUEST RELATIONS
As a convenience to our fans, Guest Relations booths,
are located at all three entrance gates, at the club level
elevator lobbies and, on the 500 level. Guest Relations
team members provide fans with information about the
stadium, public transportation, restaurants and hotels
in addition to facilitating the game day experience.
Please feel free to report any problems/issues to a Guest
Relations team member in the Guest Relations booths or
to a team member throughout the seating bowl.
SMOKING
Per North Carolina law, smoking is not permitted in Bank
of America Stadium.
LOST AND FOUND
Reports of lost and found items should be made at
any Guest Relations Booth. On non-event days, call the
stadium operations office at (704) 358-7492 to inquire
about lost items.
TAG-A-KID PROGRAM
As a convenience, the Tag-A-Kid program is provided by
the Carolina Panthers and Bank of America Stadium. All
guests who would like to participate may register their
child at the Guest Relations Booths on 100, 300, and
500. The child will receive a wrist band with his/her seat
location. If the child becomes lost, the wristband will allow the child to be escorted to the parent’s seats. If the
parent/s are not there, the child will be escorted to the
nearest Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer or Guest
Relations booth.
