GRADUATION
Please come join our staff, parents, families and community members as we celebrate the Class of 2015 on
Sunday, May 17th at 2 PM in the large gym in Maxwell. It is always a great day to showcase the best of
Collins-Maxwell.
APPRECIATION OF SERVICE
I want to thank our retired staff members – Beth Atwood, Susan Lee, and Cathy Weuve – for their many
years of service and dedication to Collins-Maxwell. They have been great advocates for the schools, great
colleagues, and great supports for the students. It will be difficult not having them in the buildings next year.
Please wish them well in their next adventure!
FACILITIES COMMITTEE
The committee continues to meet twice a month to review plans, funding options and communication
timelines. They are making great progress to ensure quality facilities for our students, our staff, and our
communities. Please check our district website for updates on the “Facility Studies” page under the
“DISTRICT INFORMATION” tab.
CMB JOINT MEETING
The boards from Collins-Maxwell and Baxter met on April 15th for their annual cooperative workshop.
Items reviewed included the CMB Sharing agreement, revenue/cost sharing (which is split evenly), sports
participation numbers, future plans for more communications options, practice site balance, and Mega Nights
for basketball. The Executive Council of the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference (HOIAC) did vote to
change their by-laws, so that any team that can host Mega Nights would be required to host. Therefore, all
Mega Nights will be in Baxter for the 2015-2016 school year. We are working to schedule all nonconference games, including the Hall of Fame games, in Maxwell.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Finally, as we bring this year to a strong close, I just want to thank the countless people who make CollinsMaxwell a great district for students, staff, and community stakeholders. We have certainly had a year of
struggles and successes. Each has been an opportunity to grow stronger. As we celebrate our graduates for
their learning, or our retirees for their many years of service, it is important to make sure we stand together
on common ground. I refuse to believe our best days are behind us. We must work together to build a
brighter, better future. We can. We will.
I wish you a summer of bright days, cool nights, and great experiences. And I look forward to working this
summer to be ready for a better future starting this fall.

SUMMER VACATION
A word about our menus: Lowfat milk is offered with each meal. Meals are offered to
all participants without discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, age
or disability, creed, sexual orientation, gender identity or religion. The same meals are
offered to all participants in accordance with program regulations. Menu is subject to
change.

Graduation will be held in the Maxwell Large Gym on Sunday, May 17 beginning at 2:00 pm.
Seniors last day will be Friday, May 15. We will hold graduation practice in the morning and the annual
senior vs. staff softball game will take place in the afternoon.
Semester tests will take place on Tuesday, May 19th and Wednesday, May 20th or the 9-11 graders.
The last day of school is scheduled for Thursday, May 21. Shuttles will run at 11:15 am with students
dismissed at 11:30 am. 8th Grade Promotion is scheduled to begin at 9:00 am on the 21st.

The Story County Community Youth Philanthropy
Foundation has awarded the Collins-Maxwell High
School/Middle School a $500.00 grant Ms. Dentlinger's
6th Grade Middle School class wrote with the support
from the Maxwell Area Renewal Committee. These
funds were used to purchase and install a new picnic
table (made from 100% recycled plastic). This table
has been placed at the East entrance of the Maxwell
High School/Middle School. This grant is greatly
appreciated by all that use this table outside the
Maxwell HS/MS.

Guidance Reminders:
*Seniors: If you have taken a dual-credit course anytime throughout
your high school career please remember to request that transcript be
sent to the college you’ll be attending in the fall. If you have questions
on how to do this please see Mrs. Allen.
*The next ACT date is June 13th. Students must register by May 8th if
they’d like to test on this date. Please visit www.act.org to register or
see Mrs. Allen.
All IA Honor Squad Cheerleader
Courtney Sexton (Senior, 4th year Cheerleader and Football Cheer Captain) She is the daughter of Todd and Becky Sexton of Collins, IA. She performed at halftime for the Iowa Football 2A and 3A Championship games in Cedar Falls at the UNI dome on November 21st. Congratulations Courtney! Collins Maxwell Elementary is participating in two fitness events in May! Our first
event will be on May 7th called Go the Distance May. This will be incorporated with
our Elementary Relays. Go the Distance MAY highlight the importance of physical
activity in a healthy lifestyle; encouraging schools and youth organizations to engage
students in 30-minutes of continuous activity. The second event is iMile on May 8th.
The iMile is a low commitment fundraising event designed for kids to help patients
and families at Blank Children’s Hospital. All ages 5 through 18 are eligible.
Students will “mile” at their school on May 8th. The goal is to create a day of support
through exercise. Kids can choose to walk or run based on their level of fitness. If
you are interested in donating to this wonderful event you can send money* to
school with your student or go to the following website:

Any donations made will go to Blank Children’s Hospital and the Collins-Maxwell

“UNDER THE BIG TOP”
Prom 2015 was a great night for everyone who came out and enjoyed the Grand March, dinner and dance. A lot of hard work was put into this evening in
order to make it a success. We would like to thank everyone who helped us make the evening enjoyable for all of the juniors and seniors.
We would like to give a special thank you to the juniors who did a great job putting decorations together and setting up the gym for Grand March and the
community center for the dinner and dance, and to the junior class parents for all of their hard work working at the dinner and the dance, and for cleaning
up after everything was over.
We would also like to thank Kelly Peavey for preparing a wonderful meal for the night, Sweet Em’s for making our popcorn cupcakes for our
centerpieces/desserts, Shane Swalwell for providing us with the music during dinner and the dance, and Andrea Berg Photography for taking our prom
photos. We would also like to thank Logsdon’s Grocery for donating drinks, ice and cups, for during the dance.

Collins-Maxwell FFA attended the 2015 Iowa FFA Leadership Conference April 20th
and 21st, 2015. There are many activities that occur during these days. Here are a
few of the activities that FFA members participated in:

FOURTH and FIFTH GRADERS
Raise money for The American Heart Association
Elementary News
On Monday, March 2nd, the fourth and fifth grade students had a Jump
Rope for Heart Event. The kids had been raising money and we had
this event for the kids. They jumped in the gym for around an hour and
fifteen minutes.
The neat news is how much the students raised. The always come
through and do a great job and this year was no exception. They raised
2,214.59. That translates to saving 44 lives. I am very proud of the
kids. Thank you kids and to all who donated to them for this great
cause.
Next year will be even better as we are including the whole elementary,
K-5. THANKS FOR BEING HEART HEROES!!!

Our Annual Elementary Relays Day is scheduled for Thursday, May 7, with a rain date of May 14. Guests are welcome to join us for lunch that day as well.
Our lunch will begin at 11:30. At 12:30 our opening ceremonies will begin. More information will be sent home with students as we get closer to the date.
PIE Meeting
We will be having our final PIE Meeting (Partners in Education) at 7:00pm on Monday, May 4th at Collins-Maxwell Elementary. We would love to have more
parents join us as we plan for closing up the year and discuss the 2015-2016 school year!

Preschool Informational Meeting
It’s not to soon to think about our preschool informational meeting for families who have children who will be 4 years old by September 15. We will have this
meeting on Tuesday, May 12, at 6:30 in the lunchroom at Collins-Maxwell Elementary. If you know of a family with a child turning 4 years old, please alert them to
this upcoming opportunity.
Kindergarten Round Up
As we did last year, we will not have Kindergarten Round-Up this spring. If you know of a student that did not take part in our preschool program but will be
coming to Kindergarten this Fall, please advise the family to contact the Elementary office at (641) 385-2446.
Awards Day
Our Elementary Awards Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 20 beginning at 1:00. Parents are welcome to attend the awards ceremony. The ceremony
will begin promptly at 1:00 in the Collins-Maxwell Elementary Gymnasium.
Last Day of School
Our final day of school will be Thursday, May 21 with an 11:30 dismissal. Lunch will not be served this day.

Brett Livesay
Trinity is a seventh grader and the daughter of Wesley and Stacey
Stover. She is involved in volleyball, basketball, track and softball.
In her free time Trinity enjoys spending time with her family and
her friends. Trinity also enjoys listening to music and watching her
favorite T.V. shows.
Brett is a seventh grader and the son of Lance and Susan Livesay.
He stays busy in and out of school, as he's involved in football,
basketball, track and baseball.

FUTURE CAMP
GRADES 3-7
As a future member of the CMB football family, our success depends on you! As a varsity football staff we look
forward for the opportunity to work with our future athletes and begin to develop relationships with them.
This camp will focus on the fundamentals of stance, passing, receiving, terminology and formations. Each day will
include individual instruction by the CMB coaching staff and varsity players. We will finish each day with passing
games.
When: August 3rd and 4th from 9:00-11:30 AM
Where: Baxter August 4th, Maxwell August 5th (Transportation will be provided)
Cost: $30.00 Includes a T-shirt, Gatorade, quality instruction and the ability to play on our Varsity Sports Drink
Game night, August 21st, 2015. Parents are invited each day to watch.
Items needed:
Football cleats, baseball cleats, (NO metal spikes), tennis shoes in case of rain, shorts, t-shirt, and a positive attitude.

STATE SOLO and SMALL ENSEMBLE CONTEST RESULTS
Congratulations to all of the choir members who competed at State Solo and Small Ensemble Contest in Ackley on Saturday, April 18! On Friday, March 27th, 17 middle school students participated in the 2015 Central ICDA Honor Choir for 5th/6th and 7th/8th graders. It was hosted at Webster City High School and featured talented young singers from all over central Iowa. All students worked outside of class for about 6 weeks on learning their music, rehearsed a half day with the honor choir, and then performed at a beautiful evening concert.

Music Trip to Chicago
On March 19 the Collins-­‐Maxwell Music Department traveled to Chicago, Illinois to tour the city for three days. On Friday the group went to the Sky Deck in the Willis Tower in the morning. They were able to stand on plastic landings that let students look down to the streets below from 103 stories up in the air. That afternoon they shopped on the Magnificent Mile in downtown Chicago, followed by a Gangster Tour. The Gangster tour told the stories of the many mob families that once ran the town of Chicago during Prohibition. After the tour they enjoyed a fun dinner at Ed Debivic’s, a 50’s themed diner.
After dinner the group traveled to the theater to see the “Million Dollar Quartet”. It was a Broadway show about the night that Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins all got together and jammed. The group was able to sit right behind the piano player, who was phenomenal and so much fun to watch!
On Saturday the group traveled to the Museum of Science and Industry where they performed separately in the morning.
The group then spent the afternoon touring the museum and enjoying all the many wonderful exhibits. Before leaving downtown Chicago for the day, the group stopped at the famous Millennium Park to take their picture in front of Cloud Gate, the sculpture affectionately nicknamed the "Bean".
The evening was spent at a dinner theatre called Medieval Times, where students “traveled back in time” to eat in the style of a Medieval tournament. Students ate with their hands and watched as Knights dueled in different sporting events.
On their last day in Chicago the group traveled to the Shedd Aquarium. Students spent the morning exploring underwater exhibits from all over the world. They were able to see the animals up close and even touch some of them. They attended a show while there, where the trainers and the animals performed tricks. The show talked about preserving ocean life and taking care of everything that lives in the water.
After eating a quick lunch the group filed onto the bus to begin their trip home. It was a great trip, filled with lots of memorable things, learning opportunities, and fun with friends. Thank you to our awesome chaperones: Melissa Robinson, Paul Robertson, Amy Van Maanen, Cheryl Fricke, Melissa Kahler, Ronda Page, and Jeff Loving. The music department really appreciated all the support from parents and community members through our fundraising efforts this year as well!

Help our local food pantry!
My name is Patrick Girard and I would like your help with my NHS service project this
year. From May 4th to May 8th I would like to ask any students and community
members that want to, bring nonperishable food items to the school in Collins or
Maxwell. These food items will be donated to our Local Food Pantry to help fill the
shelves. Things like cereal, canned soup, peanut butter, toothpaste are good
examples of things they need. The Pantry is open the third Tuesday of the month
from 6:00-7:00 PM at the Presbyterian Church in Maxwell.
Rates of food insecurity among rural households are generally lower than urban
households, but slightly higher than the national average. The irony is that many of
these food-insecure households are in the very rural and farm communities whose
productivity feeds the world and provides low-cost wholesome food for American

BUDGET HEARING FOR 2015-16 The public budget hearing for the 2015-16 school year was called to order by President Lowell Crouse at 7:01 p.m..

B. DISCUSSION OF BUDGET Superintendent Jason Ellingson gave an overview of next year’s budget. With declining enrollment, 0%
supplemental aid (unless the legislature acts soon), and higher tax valuations, our levy rate for the next fiscal year may increase from the
15.23118 of last year. The “Proposed Budget” document is for our spending authority, and it is not the official line item budget of the district. It is
important to also know that the rate is not determined from the Proposed Budget. The rate is actually calculated from the Aid and Levy
Worksheet.
C. PUBLIC COMMENTS
D. Sue Philpot commented on how important it was to keep our tax rate down to bring families into our town.

A APPROVE BUDGET GUARANTEE RESOLUTION Board member Plunkett “Resolved, that the Board of Directors of Collins-Maxwell Community
School District, will levy property tax for fiscal year 2015-16 for the regular program budget adjustment as allowed under section 257.14, Code of Iowa.”
It was seconded by Caple. Motion carried 5y-0n.
B. APPROVAL OF INCOME SURTAX RESOLUTION Motion by Plunkett, second by Caple, to set the Instructional Support Program’s income surtax rate
at 7% for next year’s budget. This tax is to be imposed upon the state individual income tax of each individual income taxpayer resident in the school
district. Motion carried 3y-2n. Plunkett-aye, Caple-aye, Boege-aye, Huntrods-nay, Crouse-nay.
C. APPROVAL OF PUBLISHED 2015-16 BUDGET Caple moved, and Boege seconded, the motion to approve the published budget for next year with a
roll call vote. Huntrods-aye, Boege-aye, Crouse-aye, Caple-aye, Plunkett-aye. Motion carried 5y-0n. Because of a misunderstanding and the
adjustments to the Income Surtax and Supplemental Aid a second vote was taken on a revised budget of 15.31887 from the published budget of 16.60911
with a motion from Caple, second by Boege. Motion carried 5y-0n by a roll call vote. Huntrods-aye, Boege-aye, Crouse-aye, Caple-aye, Plunkett-aye.
D. APPROVAL OF GRADUATION LIST FOR THE CLASS OF 2015 Mrs. Allen, guidance counselor, and Mr. Williams, HS principal, have submitted the
graduation list for the class of 2015. Motion by Huntrods, seconded by Caple, to approve the graduation list, if the students have met the requirements as
stated in board policy and the student handbook. Motion carried 5y-0n.
E. APPROVAL OF 2014 AUDIT By a motion from Boege, second from Huntrods, the 2014 Audit, prepared by Nolte, Cornman & Johnson, P.C., was
approved. Motion carried 5y-0n. The audit will be posted on the Collins-Maxwell School website and can also be found on the State Auditors website.
F. APPROVAL OF COMPUTER PURCHASE Technology Director Kris Corbin, presented his proposal for computer purchases for the next three years of
our 1:1 initiative, as well as ongoing technology support. With a motion by Caple, second by Huntrods, the board approved the purchases of 165 laptop
computers with cases for the high school, 5 HP Laserjet Pro’s, 5 MacBook Airs for teachers, and 16 Apple TV units for a total cost of $146,925.22. The
high school laptops will replace iPads, which will move to elementary classrooms so that each classroom has an iPad for each student to use, some to the
Pre-K, Music, art and resource rooms at the elementary and for needed areas in the MS/HS. Motion carried 5y-0n.
7. ADJOURNMENT A motion by Huntrods and seconded by Boege, to adjourn the board meeting at 9:21 p.m. Motion carried 5y-0n.

COLLINS-MAXWELL AND BAXTER COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICTS

1. CALL TO ORDER The Boards of Education from Baxter and Collins-Maxwell met with C-M Superintendent
Ellingson calling the work session to order at 6:30 p.m. in the Maxwell School Gym.

SHORT HISTORY OF CMB SHARING AGREEMENT Superintendents Ellingson and Martin shared facts about
the CMB Sharing Agreement. One fact is that Collins-Maxwell and Baxter share the costs and revenue of ALL
athletics, regardless of their location. All CMB accounts are reconciled at the end of the fiscal year and split evenly
between the two districts.
CURRENT STATUS/FUTURE PLANS FOR CMB SHARING AGREEMENT The CMB Communications
Committee is comprised of two members from each of the Collins-Maxwell and Baxter school boards, administration
from both schools and the Athletic Directors from both schools. They were meeting twice a year and are now meeting
4 times a year. Meetings have been tentatively scheduled for the first Wednesday of August, October, January and
March of each year. They have worked diligently to respond to community inquiries, comments, and/or editorials
regarding the sharing agreement and working to improve communication structures in efforts to move toward a more
unified partnership; hence healthy relations to better serve our stakeholders (students, parent, and communities). When
the CMB Communications Committee began exploring options for one-site facilities, there are many factors to take
into consideration. These considerations included: safety, cost, playing conditions, state requirements and conference
by-laws/mandates. For some sports they continue to utilize a 3-year rolling average of participants from each school to
determine the number of games at C-M and Baxter (volleyball and football). While for other sports, sites designated as
one-site playing venue due to factors mentioned above. Finally, other mitigating factors come in the form of
conference by-laws or mandates, i.e. Mega-Nights. Benefits of Mega-Nights include: more options for making up
games without cancelling FR/JV, less travel time, more team practice time, and allows families with multiple athletes
to attend child’s events. The boards would like you to keep all these factors in mind as you reflect on our CMB
Athletic Sharing Agreement.
BOOSTER CLUB UPDATES No one from the Booster Club was able to attend so the AD’s Lori Fricke and Henry
Haupert gave an update. They are trying to come up with new ideas for raising money. There will be no jersey
auction this year but there will be a Raiderfest on August 29th from 9-1 in Collins. If you have a fundraising idea and
want to be become an active part of the Booster Club please contact one of the current officers or show up at the next
meeting.
PARTICIPATION NUMBERS The AD’s recapped participation numbers and locations. All of the information
presented has been put on the websites of each district.
HALL OF FAME UPDATES Rob Luther informed the boards that this will be year three and will be at Maxwell.
More details will come later about the event, fundraising and the golf tournament.
GOLF FOR 2016 Because of combining with Colo-Nesco, golf has been moved to 3-A this year and it is hard to
compete with athletes who golf twice a year. Participation numbers in golf has been dropping and with ongoing
transportation and coaching concerns the boards will be discussing the issue of whether to continue this sport at the
next board meeting.
CLOSING COMMENTS BY BOARD PRESIDENTS Both board presidents thanked everyone for coming. This
last year has been a challenging year and they would like everyone to know that they try hard to do what is best for
kids and after 27 years they can only improve and get better. The work session adjourned at 7:12 p.m.
