KEGEL’S PRODUCE 2012 LOCAL PRODUCE GUIDE
In 2012, Kegel's Produce will once again strive to bring their customers the finest
in quality of locally grown produce. Last year, we had our most successful year
selling locally grown product in our company’s history, and we hope to do even
better this year. Our lineup of locally grown products includes over 150 items, all
from within 150 miles of our award-winning facility in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
The following booklet contains products that we intend to have this year and
specific information on each one of them. We have been communicating with our
local suppliers frequently over the colder months, and like all of us here at Kegel’s
Produce, they look forward to the season ahead.
For more information on locally-grown or any other produce item, please feel
free to contact your produce consultant or our customer service team. You can
also read about our local produce on the web, at www.kegels.com. There you will
find Locally Speaking; a newsletter specifically geared towards locally-grown
produce which is updated every Monday throughout the season.

LOCAL CABBAGE
Green and Red, available by the pound or the bin
FROM:
 J.R. & T. (Bob) Musser’s Farm in Lancaster, Pa.
 Leola Produce Auction, Leola, Pa.
PACK DESCRIPTION:
Most of our cabbage will go to our fresh-cut department, but Kegel’s will be offering local cabbage to
customers this year by the pound, and can sell entire bins if that becomes a necessity.
AVAILABILITY:
Local cabbage is generally available from early to mid-July through Thanksgiving.
MORE ABOUT CABBAGE
PHOTO GALLERY:
These photos of Mr. Musser and his family planting rows of cabbage are from year’s past when we visited
his farm. Mr. Musser’s farm lies closer to our facility than any other of our locally-grown sources, and due
to that we can get cabbage six days a week if we would even be in a pinch. After Mr. Musser picks his
cabbage, he stores it in a large walk in cooler at his farm until either he delivers it to our warehouse or we
backhaul it from his farm in Manor Township, Lancaster County.
Mid-April – Plants begin in a
greenhouse to spark growth;
these plugs will be planted
Mid-April – One of Bob’s sons
planting pre-grown cabbage
plugs in the field using a machine
Mid-April – The end result; plugs
are inserted in ground and the
growing process begins
Mid-April – Bob guiding his
tractor through one of the fields
on his farm during planting
Mid-June – An 80% mature head
of green cabbage; this will be
picked in about three weeks

LOCAL SWEET CORN
White and Yellow varieties are available, with yellow
being limited.
FROM:
 Cedar Meadow Farm in Holtwood, Pa.
 Good Harvest Vegetable Farm in Strasburg, Pa.
 Brooklawn Farm Market in Neffsville, Pa.
 Leola Produce Auction in Leola, Pa.
PACK DESCRIPTION:
Our local sweet corn will be backhauled or delivered to our door in 50 dozen bins throughout the
summer. If desired, Kegel’s Produce will sell entire bins of sweet corn to a customer. We will not sell corn
by the ears, so minimum purchase will be at least one dozen.
AVAILABILITY:
Due to a cooler than normal June and wet weather, Sweet Corn was not available to us last year until the
third week of July. While that is not entirely late for a season, in years past we have had good weather
and squeezed some in around Independence Day. Consumers can expect to pay top dollar during July for
local sweet corn. Once corn becomes readily available, Kegel’s Produce makes every attempt to purchase
fresh sweet corn at least six days a week. Once the season gets into September, things really scale back
with this crop.
BREAKING CASES:
Kegel’s Produce will sell corn by the dozen and the bin in 2012.
PICTURES & MORE INFORMATION:
The pictures below are from the past two years at Steve Groff’s Cedar Meadow Farm in Holtwood, Pa.

Green, Red and Suntan varieties available
FROM:
 Ivan & Mabel Reiff in Leola, Pa.
 Leola Produce Auction in Leola, Pa.
PACK DESCRIPTION:
Peppers will be available by the bushel box, standard industry size. Weights will be similar to that of
normal bushel and one-ninth pepper cases, anywhere from 21-25 pounds.
AVAILABILITY:
th
Based on last year, local peppers will be available from July 4 through the end of October. This could be
different this year however, due to the increased amount of crop that Mr. Reiff has planted this season.
MORE ABOUT PEPPERS
OUR GROWER:
Mr. Ivan Reiff, who also grows spinach, swiss chard, seedless watermelons and kale for us throughout the
season, has been supplying us with local produce for over 4 years now. In April 2008 when we visited his
farm, we took the following pictures.
Pepper plants begin to sprout in one of Ivan’s many fields. The plastic
traps heat in the soil which will help the plants grow faster. Mr. Reiff
th
hopes to have green peppers for Kegel’s Produce by July 4 , with
other varieties expected to yield later in July.
Ivan Reiff, seen here with a case of his cleaned local spinach, will be
supplying Kegel’s Produce with farm fresh product all year long. His
home-grown Kale, which should begin to arrive in early June, is one of
our best selling local products.
This picture shows a field in which Mr. Reiff has spinach planted. As
you can tell, the spinach is quite developed and almost ready to be
picked. Local spinach from Ivan’s farm was the first locally grown
product we had in our warehouse in 2012, and usually grows until it
begins to get hot in mid-June.

LEOLA PRODUCE AUCTION:
The Leola Produce auction will be a mainstay in our local program once again this year. The auction is a
place where local farmers that Kegel’s may not deal with frequently bring produce to sell. During the
season, it is common that we will bring in Green and Yellow Squash, Watermelons (Seeded and Seedless),
Tomatoes and other products that we may not have a local supplier available. Below, trucks line up to sell
their products at the produce auction in Leola.

 Good Harvest Vegetable Farm in Strasburg, Pa.
 Brooklawn Farm Market in Neffsville, Pa.
 Leola Produce Auction in Leola, Pa.
PACK DESCRIPTION:
Tomatoes will be packed to the industry standards,
25lb cases and 12ct. cases for grape, pear and cherry
tomatoes. The exception will be the heirloom
tomatoes (15 & 10lb. cases), which we have two sizes.
AVAILABILITY:
Local tomatoes should be in our warehouse by the
th
week before July 4 , as was the case last year. Thanks
to Cedar Meadow Farms’ high tunnels, we can pretty
much know when we will have them on a consistent
basis. For more information on Steve’s high tunnels,
please see the more about tomatoes section below.
BREAKING CASES:
Kegel’s Produce will have local tomatoes, plum tomatoes and yellow tomatoes by the pound and cherry,
pear and grape tomatoes by the each. Green and heirloom tomatoes will only be sold by the case in 2012.
If 15 pounds are too much, we have introduced a ten-pound pack of heirloom tomatoes to help shrink.
MORE ABOUT TOMATOES
CEDAR MEADOW FARM – THE HIGH TUNNELS:
Most of the local tomatoes we get throughout the year come from the high tunnels at Cedar Meadow
farm. Steve Groff estimates that he has thirteen acres under cover and over 8,000 tomato plants in those
tunnels, all of which are well protected from diseases and bugs.
Late April – A
small tomato
plant begins to
grow in the high
tunnels at Cedar
Meadow Farms.
Late May – A series of days
with above average
temperatures have allowed
the tomatoes in the tunnels to
grow extremely fast in just the
short time that they have
been in the ground.
Early July – Just eight weeks
later, plants are producing
fruit and cases are available
for purchase. Steve’s tunnels
allow for harvests up to three
weeks earlier than normal
plants would.
Early July – These
heirloom
tomatoes are
90% mature.
These are one of
Steve’s 30+
varieties.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
We do have more local codes in our system. Some items we did not put on this list due to the uncertainty
that we may or may not have them available during the season. Customer service agents can check in GSS
for more codes by using the word “LOCAL” where a product number can be entered.
