The John Lyon School Public Benefits Summary
The John Lyon School has established links within Harrow on the Hill and the wider community.
These links extended both nationally and internationally. Local links involve pupils and staff from The
John Lyon School contributing in practical ways to the life of the community within local schools, the
local church and voluntary organisations. The facilities of the School are accessed by a number of
organisations both as charitable arrangement and as lettings.
Community and Links Ethos: To use the many benefits of the School including its pupils, staff
facilities and resources to establish beneficial links with the community, both on a local level and
within the wider world.
Activities Programme:


As part of the School’s Activity Programme pupils assist Alexander School for Special Needs
with gardening.
The Community Project (an activity programme for Year 7 and 8 Pupils), carries out
gardening, cleaning and polishing duties at St Mary’s Church, at the top of Harrow on the
Hill.


Exhibitions are held throughout the academic year which are open to the local community.
Harrow Photography Competition is held in the School Art Gallery.
Art:
Buildings & Facilities:




School facilities have been made available to: Harrow Police Cadets; Harrow Opera; Harrow
on the Hill Community Church, St Joseph’s RC Primary School, a local orchestra; Ruislip and
Northwood Music Festivals; the Associated Board of the Royal Society of Music and other
schools and youth groups.
Cricket Montessori School use the School’s Practice Pitch as their playground.
Full time home for South Vale pre-school group.
School Holiday and Saturday Morning Clubs are based at the School.
Charity:


The School nominates a charity which the school community supports throughout the
academic year. This year’s nominated charity Great Ormond Street Hospital will receive in
excess of £20,000 of fundraising.
Alongside the nominated charity, the School supports other charities and their events, such
as co-hosting a Macmillan Coffee Morning with the School’s PFA.
Drama:



The annual School Musical invites local primary schools to attend the dress rehearsal at The
Ryan Theatre. The Musical involves girls from local girls’ schools.
Local Primary Schools are invited to a matinee of the School’s Junior Drama production.
Theatre In Education takes place at the School, where pupils perform in themed pieces
tackling important issues such as bullying and war. Local primary schools are invited as the
target audience and to participate.
Outdoor Education

The Mountaineering Club worked in conjunction with Plymouth Marine Laboratory to gather
data for the Royal Society during their recent expedition to Greenland. They also established
a link with a local school there.
Duke of Edinburgh Award:

Pupils aiming to achieve a DofE Award take part in a community service programme; helping
at Chestnut Lodge Care Home or teaching sport at Sudbury School.
English and Library:



Out of date books are donated to OGASUK, a charity which sends the books to The Holy
Cross School in Yaounde, Cameroon.
Several Author Visits throughout the academic year which local schools are invited.
Partnership events with local schools, for example The Chaucer Event, exploring oral
tradition in English Literature and the Gothic Literature Event where a speaker was invited to
speak to pupils from other schools.
Mathematics:


Gifted & Talented Mathematics students from Roxeth First & Middle School attend special
classes with JLS staff.
STEP Maths preparation for students from local maintained schools.
Music:





Lunchtime concerts are attended by Primary Roxeth School in the Music School.
VOCES8 (a critically acclaimed vocal group) were invited by the School to hold a free concert
for the school community, local schools and local residents.
A Junior Music Day was organised by the School for local schools to attend. Participants took
part in a day long workshop before giving a free concert.
The School’s Male Voice Choir will take part in a major concert alongside the Welsh Male
Voice Choir as part of Great Ormond Street Hospital’s fundraising concert.
The School organises and participates in a free public concert at Christmas at the Parish
church of St John the Baptist, Greenhill, Harrow.
Science:



The School participates in SHINE Project, offering teachers and teaching facilities in the
promotion of Science to talented local individuals. The Project takes place over the course of
several weeks.
Select students from local schools were invited to attend the Gifted & Talented Forensics
Workshop.
Pupils from a local primary school are invited to participate in Science workshops.
Sixth Form:



In the Sixth Form, in the place of games, boys may choose to be involved in the Community
Service programme. At present boys help out at the Red Balloon Learner Centre which
provides support for children who have suffered severe bullying at school, RNIB Sunshine
House School and Children’s Home, which educates blind and partially sighted children with
significant learning difficulties and disabilities between the ages of two and 11 years, Harrow
Carers, an organisation which supports unpaid carers, and three local primary schools. The
programme is designed to enable the boys to give back to the community and to grow as
individuals by learning about the challenges that others face. The impact on the lives of
those they have been working with has been noted by all the organisations and the
programme will continue to grow in the coming twelve months as more organisations and
more boys are keen to become involved.
Sixth Form students organised a Hindu Religious event at the School for Great Ormond
Street Hospital raising £9,000.
UCAS interviews provided to students from local schools in preparation for university
entrance.
Sports:











The School hosts the Harrow District Football fixtures.
Middlesex County trials Boys U14, U15, U16 and U18 and the Girls U16 and U14.
Borough Plate Cricket Finals and district trials.
The School’s cricket nets have been used by local schools, including Park High, Rooks Heath
and Whitmore.
Roxeth Mead has used the nets for Leadership courses run by JLS students.
Borough Basketball, Borough Badminton, Borough Swimming, Running Borough
Championships and Athletics and Cricket County Meetings have been held at the School.
Sports Centre is used by local primary schools during the week.
Harrow Borough cricket squads use the Sports Hall and play fixtures at Sudbury playing
fields.
St Dominic’s College use the Sudbury Fields for the PE moderation day.
The Sudbury Fields will be used for local primary schools to work with FA skills coaches.
Harrow Borough School under 11 use the Sudbury Fields for their Under 11 and Under 14
fixtures
Other Public Benefits:



The School has hosted the School Travel Plan Workshop for Harrow Council in one of the IT
suites.
Teachers who are GCSE and A-Level markers / moderators / examiners (e.g. for AQA, OCR
exam boards).
Teachers who are Governors at local state schools.
