KO'J'A KINABALU; Six departments in Universiti Malflysia Sabah
(UMS) will seek for the Occupational Safety and Health Management ·
System certification this year.

, UMS Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah said, for a
start; fue university will begin efforts to obtain the certification in six
departments and these are the Chancellery Department, Department of
Information and Communication Technology, .Centre of Eco . Campus
Management, Islamic Centre of UMS, Internal Audit Division and the ·
UMS Occupational Safety and Health Centre.

"We will expand it to all faculties, in~titutes and departments in the
university in stages. VMS has 10 faculties, three institutes and 42
departments,"· he told.reporters after a seminar on Occupational Safety and
Hl(alth Management System at the UMS Chancellery Building here,
yesterday.'

Meanwhile, .UMS .Director of the Centre' of Occupational Safety and
Health, Associate Professor Dr. Shamsul Shamsudin Bahari said it aims to
obtain certification for the six departments either by Mayor June.
-"If there are no obstacles, we will have the second level ofauditing at the
end ofMarch. When the certification will be given depends on how quickly
an organisation responds to all procedures that have been set. .
"Therefore commitment from the employers is crucial in order to optain

belief that the university's top management should be the best example for
other departments.

. Health (NIOSH) Haji Rosli Hussin said the achievements-. of an · or­
ganisation are closely related to' the implementation of a good Oc­
cupational Safety and Health Management System.

tematic approach in risk management.
It helps an organisation to continue improving health and safety
standards,
