At the end of each year, we put together an annual booklet highlighting the top writers from our Pilot and Feature Launch Pad Competitions. With Launch Pad scripts and writers having signed with every major, and sold to every studio in just the two years since we began this journey, we’re incredibly proud of the talent that has come from our competition. So, inside of these pages, we offer an introduction to the scripts we’ve recognized in as the Top 5% of all 2015 Launch Pad entries, and a breakdown as to why we love them, who the writers are, and why you should read. WHO IS THIS BOOKLET FOR? Whether, Agent, Manager, Producer, Executive, or Assistant, this book is for you. In just over two years, we’ve seen over 100 writers signed, 37 projects set up, 13 writers staffed, and over 70 writers appearing on annual “best of” lists. We love the success our writers have seen, and those working with them have pulled from the competition. And as such, we want to make it as easy as possible to take a look at our 2015 Alums, whether looking for new clients or projects, and see if there’s something or someone in there for you. HOW CAN I REQUEST SCRIPTS? Instead of bouncing emails back and forth, or signing in and downloading a bunch of scripts, this year we’re making it incredibly easy to request scripts. At the bottom of each script section you will see “Click here to request the script”. Once clicking that you will open a request form, which will have a quick dropdown to select any of the scripts included here. Select the ones you’d like, click submit, and we’ll send your picks to you right away. HOW CAN I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THESE WRITERS? Once you get to the request page, you will find a link to all of our LP Alum’s pages. There, you will find out more about who they are, what they’ve done, and what else they’re working on. That link can also be found here: http://launchpad.tracking-board.com/ launch-pad-alumni/ HOW CAN I CONTACT THE WRITERS? Instead of putting all of the writers' info in this booklet for the world to see, if you’ve found a script you love and want to get in touch with the writers, you can just shoot us a quick email at: [email protected] and we’ll put you in touch. Snow by Ron Peer by Ben Watts by Paul McLalin PILOTS 20,000 LEAGUES by Cody Pearce PITCH: DA VINCI’S DEMONS meets THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN LOGLINE: A fantasy-world detective is charged with hunting down a mysterious sea monster that is terrorizing the town, while a young reporter and his photographer sister also search for the beast. GENRE: Drama | Period | Sci-Fi WHY TO READ: Loosely based on Jules Verne’s 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, this procedural beautifully balances action, intrigue, humor and heart in an imaginative setting. The lead character provides the audience with a familiar foundation while also treating them to a completely original adventure. Filled with stunning visuals, twists, and more than enough action, this script will keep the pages turning. REPS: 100% Available READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT --------------------------------- APALACHEE by Gannon Kenney PITCH: MR ROBOT meets HOMELAND LOGLINE: A UN officer is coerced into spying for the NSA after leaked information from his computer helps to fuel a terrorist plot on American soil. GENRE: Drama | Thriller WHY TO READ: APALACHEE is an ambitious thriller that takes us into the politically driven world of the United Nations. The show has clearly defined protagonists and antagonists who aren't afraid to go at each other head on. It has a deeply layered plot that keeps the reader engaged and asking what will happen next. REPS: Available for Agents Energy Entertainment | Brooklyn Weaver READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT --------------------------------- ARCANE by Joe Marino PITCH: JUSTIFIED meets SUPERNATURAL LOGLINE: A young woman with mysterious powers makes an alliance with a retired exorcist when their southern hometown becomes ground zero in a supernatural war between nightmarish forces. GENRE: Drama | Supernatural | Horror WHY TO READ: Thematically similar to CONSTANTINE but with the dark backbone of HANNIBAL, ARCANE gives us exorcists like we’ve never seen them. The gripping, and horrifying, teaser establishes tension that just doesn’t let up. Jolene, the young exorcist who doesn’t understand her powers nor her role in the oncoming war, is at once terrifying and terrified. She’s smart and sympathetic, and her plight reels in the reader quickly and effectively. This is a story about coming home and finding a place in the world, all while trying to save a town that might not be worth saving. REPS: 100% Available READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT THE TRACKING BOARD |1 ASH LAKE by John Schlirf PITCH: THE KILLING meets BLOODLINE LOGLINE: A recent high school graduate seeks justice for her wrongly-accused brother, bringing her up against the detective who’s keeping the truth hidden to protect her own son. GENRE: Drama | Mystery | Crime WHY TO READ: A compelling mystery backed by solid writing will make ASH LAKE stand out in the world of crime procedurals. The inherent conflict of interest due to the lead detective’s cover-up is strengthened by the secret being kept past the pilot. The audience is only slightly less in-the-dark than the characters, and the suspense works. This is small-town murder at its best, examining who’s effected by the crime and just how far the ripples reach within the community REPS: 100% Available READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT --------------------------------- BAIT by Homa Mojtabai PITCH: REVENGE meets HARD CANDY LOGLINE: After the system fails her, a sexual assault survivor takes justice into her own hands. GENRE: Drama WHY TO READ: This is an intense script, and there is nothing out there like it. BAIT gives a very difficult subject an exciting plot, while being careful not to skimp on empathy. It's written actively and tensely, with quick plotting driven with a fury, even while unstoppable outside events occur. Thematically, the script tackles issues of rape culture, sexism, and superficiality head on, connecting characters through a strong intentional theme. REPS: Available for Agents Heroes and Villains | Henry Huang READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT --------------------------------- BANK SQUAD by Evan Menzel PITCH: BOYZ N THE HOOD meets THE WIRE LOGLINE: On the cusp of the L.A. Riots, young brothers navigate a gangland while two very different FBI agents work together to solve a string of bank robberies. GENRE: Drama | Period | Crime WHY TO READ: With the recent runaway success of STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, this script reflects the same troubling time period in LA history and a host of memorable, sympathetic characters with strong voices. Dramatic irony is used smartly, with the audience knowing more than the characters, and the reveal at the end is a total twist that’s well-executed and feels earned. The grittiness of the characters could make this the next great premium cable series. REPS: 100% Available READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT THE TRACKING BOARD |2 THE BELT by Garrett Lander & Joel Dorland PITCH: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA meets DEADWOOD LOGLINE: An assassin must keep a young girl with mysterious powers safe on a space colony while the universe as they know it begins to change around them. GENRE: Drama | Sci-Fi WHY TO READ: THE BELT offers up great characters that all possess unique voices and traits, while also introducing an interesting and complicated world. Dialogue is used for maximum impact, with no words wasted. The action is compelling, the sci-fi set pieces work, and the hook begins a cool mystery that we want to see solved. REPS: Available for Agents Benderspink | Daniel Vang, Scott Stoops READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT --------------------------------- BENEATH by Ryan Stack PITCH: THE STAND meets LOST LOGLINE: An oil tycoon down to his last dollar makes a deal to drill on the land of a farmer and his family, only to discover that what is beneath the ground is far more than ordinary fossil fuel. GENRE: Drama | Supernatural | Horror WHY TO READ: BENEATH is creepy and effective at building both drama and dread throughout the pilot. The final twist provides a satisfying end with the promise of more mystery to be explored throughout the season while not giving away too much. The characters are complex yet relatable, and their relationships develop naturally. REPS: Available for Agents Energy Entertainment | Brooklyn Weaver READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT --------------------------------- BETTER by Esther Celia Finkelstein PITCH: UNITED STATES OF TARA meets TOGETHERNESS LOGLINE: After a failed suicide attempt and a stint in a psychiatric hospital, a woman must find her way to a new normal. GENRE: Comedy | Dark Comedy WHY TO READ: This hopeful dramedy tactfully balances dark themes with engaging wit, using grounded characters and solid storytelling to explore love and life from a unique point of view. The writer excels at character development, as the leads are intelligent and complex, and also smartly plays with the idea that the people around Jane may actually be crazier than her. This is a smart script with characters ready for actors and actresses to sink their teeth into. REPS: The Rothman Brecher Agency | Rina Brannen, Robb Rothman, Stephanie Rothman Available for Managers READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT THE TRACKING BOARD |3 BEYONCE’S HUNGRY by Mark Ganek PITCH: VEEP with a celebrity upstairs/downstairs twist LOGLINE: A well-organized battalion of workers coordinate Beyonce’s life, with rival coworkers vying for the top job. GENRE: Comedy WHY TO READ: BEYONCE’S HUNGRY is a witty, well-written comedy that smartly satirizes celebrity culture, in a way that feels fresh and innovative. The writing is fast-paced, clever and confident, and the characters distinctive. This script is unpredictable and wholly original. REPS: Rothman Brecher | Andrea Kavoosi and Rina Brannen Principato Young Entertainment | Maggie Haskins READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT --------------------------------- BIRDLAND by Charlotte Cohn-Williams & Jason Odell Williams PITCH: STUDIO 60 ON SUNSET STRIP meets MONEYBALL LOGLINE: The new untested and reluctant general manager of Baltimore’s major league baseball team must juggle her cocky players, rookie beer vendors, and diehard fans—all while trying not to strike out in her personal relationships. GENRE: Comedy | Drama WHY TO READ: This fast-paced drama successfully interweaves the high-stakes of running a professional sports team with strong interpersonal relationships. The contained world of a baseball stadium creates endless opportunity for diverse stories that involve everyone from the powerful owners of the team to the kids selling hot dogs in the concession stands. REPS: Available for Agents The Muraviov Company | Kathy Muraviov READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT --------------------------------- BLACKRUSH by Brent Beath PITCH: LONGMIRE meets JUSTIFIED LOGLINE: Murder, violence, and corruption threaten to engulf a New Mexico town on the verge of a fracking boom unless a detective from Boston, who has deeper connections than he knows, can stop the daughter of the powerful founding family from taking control. GENRE: Drama | Mystery WHY TO READ: This is New Mexico as we’ve never seen it. The fish out of water detective from Boston establishes conflict from page one thanks to a close-knit community trying to keep its own secrets. The political dynamics of an old oil family mixed with new drug running, as well as the burgeoning relationship between two new partners, is interesting and set for conflict. It’s easy to see how this series would run for seasons. REPS: 100% Available READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT THE TRACKING BOARD |4 BLUE BOOK by Andrea Janakas PITCH: THE X-FILES meets MAD MEN LOGLINE: A desk jockey gets promoted to director of the Blue Book Project, which monitors and analyzes all UFO sightings in 1960s America, and subsequently explains them away, no matter what the evidence actually shows. GENRE: Drama | Sci-Fi WHY TO READ: Though our lead isn’t full on “the truth is out there” Fox Mulder, it’s easy to see how he could fall into the role with enough covered-up UFO cases. The narrative is populated with realistic characters that show a surprising (and pleasing) range of diversity and culture for the Air Force in the ‘60s. The script builds tension in all the right ways, and it’s easy to get swept into the world. REPS: Paradigm | Jennifer Good Infinity Management | Seth Nagel READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT --------------------------------- BOY UP by Cynthia Furey PITCH: MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE meets FRESH OFF THE BOAT LOGLINE: An awkward, cowardly eleven-year-old thinks he’s finally free of his schoolyard bully, only to discover that his mom has invited his nemesis into his home as a step-brother-of-sorts. GENRE: Comedy WHY TO READ: With echoes of classic hits, this show provides a distinctive voice and fresh take on the family sitcom. Everything surrounding this story is both funny and clever. There are some really solid one-liners, sight gags, and the dialog is quick, witty, and certainly the highlight of the pilot. The characters each have a unique voice within the world that shines through. It is also clear to see how the later episodes will be able to really take advantage of the basics that have been set up here. The writing as a whole is very solid, creating a quick, easy and enjoyable read. REPS: 100% Available READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT --------------------------------- BY DEGREE by Annah Feinberg PITCH: YOU’RE THE WORST meets THE RINGER LOGLINE: A woman with five masters degrees and no discernible skills subsumes her more-successful sister's identity after her untimely death. GENRE: Comedy | Dark Comedy WHY TO READ: Strengthened by an incredibly clever, original construct, BY DEGREE has an idea ripe for conflict. Jill’s entire life can be played for comedic effect, but, to its advantage, the script instead skews toward dark comedy. With a morbid, clever tone, this could be a great dramedy in the vein of WEEDS, WILFRED, or LOUIE, packing solid characters and a lot of story into a half hour. The protagonist is relatable to millennials, who have taken to hiding in school or returning to their parents’ homes. REPS: Available for Agents Grandview | Merideth Bajaña, Zac Frognowski READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT THE TRACKING BOARD |5 CANVAS 31 by Jared Doles PITCH: WHITE COLLAR meets THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR LOGLINE: A master art thief is offered a chance to stay out of prison in exchange for helping a museum track down priceless pieces of stolen art. GENRE: Drama | Heist | Dark Comedy WHY TO READ: It’s easy to see CANVAS 31 as a series, with “case of the week” thefts giving it more of a heist movie quality with all of the promised fun. Aiden is snarky and likable-- cocky without being too cocky. Zoey, the hot-headed detective tasked with catching him, is just as interesting, and its clear how their working relationship will develop in the future. These are characters we’ll want to tune in for every week. REPS: 100% Available READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT --------------------------------- CASEY CAN’T by Kaitlin Fontana PITCH: CALIFORNICATION meets 30 ROCK LOGLINE: When a veteran, old school music critic loses her job, she is forced to take a new one with the sort of magazine she’s always despised: an online blog. GENRE: Comedy | Dark Comedy WHY TO READ: The funny, foul-mouthed female lead and her hilarious dialogue make this comedy easy to love, but it’s the subtle commentary on the state of the journalism industry that takes this script to the next level. A timely, fish out of water premise rounded out by sharply drawn supporting characters makes it clear it will be on the air for years. REPS: 100% Available READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT --------------------------------- THE CHAIN by Teresa Huang PITCH: ENEMY OF THE STATE meets FACE/OFF LOGLINE: A terrorist plot gets closer to fruition as a mysterious event causes several people, including the Vice President, to wake up in the body of someone else. GENRE: Drama | Thriller | Sci-Fi WHY TO READ: A smart, fast paced thriller that is ripe with creative possibilities for a long standing series. This is a new take on the body swap story, and is a deeply layered political thriller that interweaves a compelling HOMELAND-esque plot with stakes that are relatable to the average viewer. This grounded sci-fi show uniquely has network, cable, and premium appeal. REPS: Available for Agents Art/Work Entertainment | Cindy Ambers, Julie Bloom READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT THE TRACKING BOARD |6 CINEPHILE by Chris Dymond PITCH: TRUE DETECTIVE meets CASTLE LOGLINE: A retiring police detective with early onset Alzheimer’s disease tries to solve her last murder mystery case involving a serial killer who stages the deaths of his victims exactly like iconic movie scenes. GENRE: Drama | Thriller | Mystery WHY TO READ: An inventive concept coupled with a fascinating (and largely unseen) character, CINEPHILE uses murder and mayhem to its full advantage. By giving us iconic death scenes we’re familiar with, but turning them on their heads, the show keeps the killer’s pattern exciting and interesting. The killer’s motivation is clear and solid, and Detective Bolt’s story is strong and relatable. The best part – the cat and mouse game between the two is just beginning. REPS: 100% Available READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT --------------------------------- CURED by Joe Osborn PITCH: QUEER AS FOLK meets THE O.C. LOGLINE: In the summer of 1996, a gay mid-west teenager is sent to a co-ed conversion therapy camp so he can be “fixed.” GENRE: Drama | LGBT WHY TO READ: Todd’s story is inspirational and heartbreaking without being melodramatic. Isolated for a summer from everyone he cares about, Todd is immediately likable, and his parents aren’t hateful, just confused. These kinds of nuanced characters populate the pilot, and the story itself is so compelling its easy to see Todd’s journey expanding as the series goes on. The writing incorporates humor and levity, balancing the tone perfectly. REPS: 100% Available READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT --------------------------------- DARK AND BROKEN CODE by Graham Funke & Zack Kaplan PITCH: MR. ROBOT meets RAY DONOVAN LOGLINE: A seasoned FBI Cyber Agent must collaborate with a notorious ex-hacker, his son who he put in jail, in order to stop a killer who uses technology to murder people. GENRE: Drama | Thriller WHY TO READ: This is a suspenseful and fun read. There are twists, turns, murders, betrayals, backstabbing, sex, action all packed into this pilot that still makes you want more. The characters are complicated and three dimensional while the action is clean and clear. It is easy to see this on a network channel running for years as the father/son relationship goes through a rollercoaster of emotions. Not only that, but the pilot successfully creates B-plots that keep the reader just as curious (maybe even suspicious) of sub characters and storylines. REPS: Available for Agents Heroes and Villains Entertainment | Mikhail Nayfeld READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT THE TRACKING BOARD |7 THE DAWN OF THE DRUG WAR by Matthew Tente PITCH: THE UNTOUCHABLES meets BOARDWALK EMPIRE LOGLINE: In 1933, the Prohibition Bureau considers an African-American federal agent, who recently lost his partner in a drug bust and was subsequently laid off, to spy on the South Side of Chicago community as they ramp up their war on narcotics in light of prohibition being repealed. GENRE: Drama | Crime | Period WHY TO READ: A gritty, dark world filled with deep characters. This story deals with everything from race, sex, drugs, the end of prohibition, and even inter-agency relationships. The pilot is dense without ever being heavy, and the deft writing handles all of its topics with sincerity. The writing is visual and the story is dramatic and engaging. REPS: 100% Available READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT --------------------------------- DEVIL RIVER by David Sullivan PITCH: TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE meets HELL ON WHEELS LOGLINE: When a timid slave preacher is separated from his wife and child by a gambling professional, he decides to team up with a mysterious black gambler on the Mississippi steamboats to learn how to win his family’s freedom. GENRE: Drama | Period WHY TO READ: Roll the dice on this beautifully realized tale of love, family and danger aboard the swinging riverboats of the antebellum South. From the very first card game, played on top of a corpse baking in the plantation sun, the story keep readers on the edge of their seats as our heroes dodge overseers, rival card sharks, and the demons of their pasts in search of a better life. REPS: 100% Available READ IT: CLICK HERE TO REQUEST THE SCRIPT --------------------------------- ECHO LAKE by Elena Song PITCH: MAD MEN meets THE KILLING LOGLINE: In the winter of 1974, a suffocatingly small Connecticut town is put through the ringer when the high school principal turns up dead in the frozen lake, and everyone’s a suspect. GENRE: Drama | Period | Mystery WHY TO READ: ECHO LAKE makes full use of its claustrophobic small town environment where everyone knows everyone else and everything… except for who killed Jenny Finch. The mystery threatens to tear the community apart as suddenly almost everyone’s a suspect, even the detective on the case.
