We have had an interview with Ivana Ertlova
What is your opinion about our university?
My first impression when I arrived in the
university campus was very nice. Because the
university campus and the hotel is located very
close to the sea. I came from Czech Republic,
from Prag. Czech Republic has a very nice nature
too but we haven’t got sea, so I a little envy your
students that they have possibility to study in
such a nice place. I was a little surprised because
the university campus is in a large area,
everything is together; the dormitory, sports hall
and the university buildings. I was surprised that
your rector is young and I think he supports all
sports and culture events here.
Are you happy in Zonguldak?
Yes, I’m very happy here. Because all the
university sports events are good occasion for me
to meet young people from different
countries and universities of Europe.
What do you think about the organisation?
I know that organised sport events are very
difficult. All the time the organising committee
have to solve a lot of problems in all parts of
organisation. A very important thing is having a
good team and aer that ,all problems can be
solved step by step. And I think the
organisation committee managed that.
Which sports do you do?
Ivana: I did gym when I was a university
student. And aer that I did shooting sport. is
is the reason why I’m involved in International
University Sports Federation as a Chairman for
shooting sport.
Do you play table tennis?
Ivana: No, I don’t play table tennis. But I tried
it several times, it is a lovely sport.

6th European Universities Table Tennis Championship is the
most significant organization of European University Sports
Association in the table tennis branch. How did you manage to
bring this event to Bülent Ecevit University, Zonguldak, Turkey?
We applied to European Universities Sports Association through
Turkish University Sports Federation. We introduced our
university and our country. We did our best to provide trust that we
could successfully organize this event. We could bring the
tournament to Zonguldak and Bülent Ecevit University through the
efforts of our rector Prof. Dr. Mahmut ÖZER and President of
Turkish University Sports Federation Mr. Kemal TAMER. Bülent
Ecevit University has been hosting many international events on
academic basis. However this is the first time that our university is
hosting an international sports event. We are glad to make this first
time happen for Zonguldak.
Have there been any institutions who contributed to the
championship?
It goes without saying that there have been many institutions and
foundations that helped us throughout this process. First of all,
European University Sports Association supported us by accepting
that the championship would be held in Turkey. Also Turkish University Sports Federation helped greatly in all aspects. Our Prime
Ministry provided financial support through Prime Ministry
Promotional Fund. Zonguldak Governorship and our rector
provided significant support on the local basis. We extend our
gratitude to those who contributed through you.
What level is the participation in the tournament?
is year we are organizing the 6th of the tournament. Last year
we inherited the flag from Portugal and we are going to pass it on to
the Netherlands. is organization is the one with the most
participants so far. We are hosting 28 distinguished universities
from 11 countries. With its cultural and social possibilities,
Zonguldak is a highly suitable city for international organizations.
Natural beauty is an advantage of course. Accommodation is not a
problem, there is enough room for the athletes for training, and
there are lots of places to see aer the competitions. I am of the
opinion that this tournament is a contribution for the promotion of
our country.
So, how is the championship going so far?
Our organization is continuing without problem. Opening
ceremony was held on 18th of June. e matches began on 19th of June,
Wednesday. Today is the third day. Team competitions are going to end
today. Championship is going to end on Saturday which is the day
individual and mixed competitions are going to end. We are going to
hold the awarding and closing ceremony at the same day. Aer this short
notice, I would like to answer your question with what EUSA
representative Ivana Ertlova said: “You raised the standards for this
tournament far too high…” I guess there is not much to say on this one.
Finally, is there anything you want to add?
In the recent years, our country is holding many international
organizations with success. Universiade in İzmir, Winter Games in
Erzurum, European Youth Olympic Games in Trabzon and
Mediterranean Games in Mersin are a few examples. It makes us proud
that such organizations are not only held in large cities like İstanbul, A
nkara, İzmir but every part of Anatolia. Our greatest wish is to host
Olympic Games in 2020. I wish it from the heart.
