Twenty̻eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Vigésimoctavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario THE RICH YOUNG MAN AND ME One way to enter into a particular passage from the Bible is to put ourselves in the place of one of the characters. Try doing that today with the character of the rich young man in today’s Gospel. We have all asked the kind of ultimate question posed by the young man: “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Mark 10:17). So often we focus on other kinds of questions that have to do with our lives here on earth, questions like “What percentage of my salary should I dedicate to my 401(k) plan in order to retire comfortably?” While considerations such as these are important to ensure a comfortable future, today’s Gospel challenges us to ask the question that matters so much more. FORETASTE OF THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN Jesus’ response to the rich young man reveals an understanding of what God’s kingdom is all about. What we do here on earth is simply a rehearsal for the life to come. In God’s kingdom, there is no suffering, no poverty, no injustice. What we do with the gift of our earthly lives must focus on doing our part to establish that kind of kingdom here on earth. We do not have to look far to realize that this world is in need of change. Like the rich young man, we all strive to keep the commandments. Like him, we, too, are asked to do much more, most of the time in small ways, in our families, neighborhoods, schools, and workplace. The first step is to live a life of awareness—we need to attune ourselves to opportunities for doing our part to alleviate suffering and injustice. We live in hope that when we arrive at heaven’s door, what awaits us there will not be something completely surprising. What we hope to find is a kingdom of which we had a foretaste while we were here on earth. Our Pre-K classrooms began their journeys this year by getting to know one another. During the month of September the Pre-K 4 classroom began the school year by learning about owls. As the month progressed the students focused on learning about the season of Fall while reinforcing number recognition and practicing their fine motor skills through the use of scissors. The students in Pre-K began the school year by learning about animals and learning the first three letters of the alphabet. This includes letter recognition, arts and craft activities and new vocabulary based on the letter that the students learned. The month of October is a very busy month for the Pre -K students. During the month of October the Pre-K 3 classroom will focus on themes such as Fall, Pumpkins/ Halloween and shapes while continuing to explores the different letters of the alphabet. The Pre-K 4 classroom will work on the themes of fall and Halloween while learning a letter of the alphabet a week. This will be the first year in which The Little Disciple learning Center will have its first “Trunk or Treat” event on October 31st,2012. We will have at least 15 parents volunteering in the activity by parking outside the perimeters of the parking lot to hand out treats as the preschoolers’ parade around the parking lot. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2012 TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME; VOCATION AWARENESS SUNDAY Start with scripture Wondering what to do with your life? Follow the Acts of the Apostles. Struggling to get past a difficult time? Pick a psalm, any psalm. Unsure how to live in gratitude? Read the Magnificat. Open a Bible and you unleash a world of wisdom gathered from generations of wayfarers whose paths, both humble and epic, led them to the same place: the waiting arms of God. The teachings of the church are essential to understanding your faith, but scripture opens you up to the mysteries and possibilities of that faith. So start with scripture as you make your way through each day. TODAY’S READINGS: Wisdom 7:7-11; Hebrews 4:12-13; Mark 10:17-30 or 10:17-27 (143) “The word of God is living and effective.” MONDAY, OCTOBER 15 FEAST OF TERESA OF JESUS, VIRGIN, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH Who are you and to whom do you pray? In The Book of My Life, Saint Teresa of Avila writes of seeking time to pray even as a child—and turning often to the Rosary, a prayer dear to her mother. Later as an adult and as a spiritual guide for her Carmelite sisters and brothers, Teresa wrote about the importance of being present to God in prayer: “Before we begin reciting the Hours or the Rosary, [let us consider] Whom we are going to address, and who we are that are addressing Him, so that we may do so in the way we should?” (The Way of Perfection). Teresa calls you to be mindful in all of your spiritual practices that you are, in this moment, in relationship with our God. Whom are you going to address? TODAY’S READINGS: Galatians 4:22-24, 26-27, 31-5:1; Luke 11:29-32 (467) “For freedom Christ set us free.” TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16 FEAST OF HEDWIG, RELIGIOUS Follow in Saint Hedwig’s footsteps Born and then married into wealth and power in the 12th century, Saint Hedwig used her privileged position to found monasteries, convents, and hospitals for lepers in what is modern-day Poland. A voice for peace amidst political strife, Hedwig donated her fortune to the church. Legend has it that she even went barefoot in the winter to express her solidarity with the poor, and when the bishop objected that she needed shoes, she carried them in her hands. You can keep your shoes on, but let your feet lead you down a similar path of sharing your abundance with those who have less. TODAY’S READINGS: Galatians 5:1-6; Luke 11:37-41 (468) “Give alms, and behold, everything will be clean for you.” WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17 FEAST OF IGNATIUS OF ANTIOCH, BISHOP, MARTYR A good martyr-complex to have “Don’t be such a martyr!” has become a cynical retort to someone who seems to point to their own suffering in order to gain sympathy. When those words were addressed to Saint Ignatius of Antioch in the second century, however, they were a plea from friends that the elderly bishop save himself from being torn to pieces by wild beasts in Rome. On the way to execution, he wrote letters asking his associates not to interfere: “I bid all men know that of my own free will I die for God. . . . Let me be given to the wild beasts, for through them I can attain unto God. I am God’s wheat, and I am ground by the wild beasts that I may be found the pure bread of Christ.” TODAY’S READINGS: Galatians 5:18-25; Luke 11:42-46 (469) “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience.” THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18 FEAST OF LUKE, EVANGELIST The Bible tells us so About every passage of scripture you can ask the following questions: Who wrote it, when and where and for whom was it written, how did the authors write it, and why? To do that requires reading a good annotated Bible like the Catholic Study Bible and having a good commentary at hand like the New Collegeville Bible Commentary or the New Jerome Biblical Commentary (both from Liturgical Press). These works are not only for scholars; they’re accessible to everyone interested in seriously reading scripture. With that background in mind, you can ask yourself what was it saying then and what is it saying now? On a day celebrating the author of the Gospel of Luke, make a commitment to read and hear the Bible with greater understanding—and therefore with greater benefit to your faith. TODAY’S READINGS: 2 Timothy 4:10-17b; Luke 10:1-9 (661) “Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.” FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19 FEAST OF JOHN DE BRÉBEUF AND ISAAC JOGUES, PRIESTS, MARTYRS, AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS Don’t get in the way of God’s word The Jesuits John de Brébeuf and Isaac Jogues, along with six priests and laypeople, suffered greatly among Native Americans in Canada to whom they had gone as missionaries. It’s the way these saints lived, however, not their horrible and untimely deaths, that continues to inspire us. Their approach to life is summed up in the following excerpt from a letter by Isaac Jogues: “My confidence is placed in God who does not need your help for accomplishing his designs. Our single endeavor should be to give ourselves to the work and to be faithful to him, and not to spoil his work by our shortcomings.” Take some time today to reflect on this extraordinary quote. TODAY’S READINGS: Ephesians 1:11-14; Luke 12:1-7 (471) “Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid.” SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20 FEAST OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY May your tears be turned into joy This third Saturday of Rosary month the church reflects on five Sorrowful Mysteries: Christ’s Agony in the Garden, Scourging, Crowning with Thorns, Carrying the Cross, and Death. How does grace assist you in the hour of fear? When has unjust suffering served a higher purpose? Can you bear humiliation without disabling your love in bitterness? Where do you find courage to bear the unavoidable burdens? When has a death-experience led you to new life? Pray the five Sorrowful Mysteries remembering the needs of five people you love. TODAY’S READINGS: Ephesians 1:15-23; Luke 12:8-12 (472) “May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that belongs to his call.” ©2012 by TrueQuest Communications Page 7 Mass Intentions for the Week Saturday, October 13, 2012 5:30 Ernesto Aucar Sunday, October 14, 2012 9:00 Angelo & Anna Barberio 10:30 For the people 12:00 Kathy Rivas Monday, October 15, 2012 9:00 Communion Service Tuesday, October 16, 2012 Last Sunday’s Collection : First Collection: $ 3,699 Second Collection: $ 1,405 Today’s Second Collection is for fuel.
