Would you let a group of children give you a makeover? No? We’ll be hosting the remarkable Fashion Machine (p10–11) this month, a theatrical spectacle, for the brave and the curious, courtesy of Skam Theatre. Theatre Seligman will be the setting for some gorgeous acts from the Festival of Voice (p12–13), including Dybbuk: Momus Sings Bowie. Over in our cinema, we’ll be indulging in some gorgeous films, from a Studio Ghibli Retrospective (p26) to our second Italian Film Festival Cardiff Taster (p24). And, last but not least... We wouldn’t normally screen the European Championships, but then it’s not every day that Wales are in such a major tournament! Allez Les Gallois! is our festival of European football, beers and street food. Jeremy from Ffwrnes tells us a bit more here, and turn to page 8 to find out full details. Thanks for reading and see you soon. We were approached by Chapter, and have since managed to bring along some friends, like Mr Croquewich, Little Blue Ox and Got Beef, amongst others. All the street food vendors have a distinct European flavour, and will be offering specials during the week. As one half of Ffwrnes, a wood fired pizza company, I absolutely love being part of the street food revolution here in Cardiff. What makes street food special? For me, it’s the fact that all of us who do it produce our one dish or one food genre really really well. It’s affordable and fun — people can try dishes they wouldn’t normally try, away from the trappings of a restaurant. See you soon for a slice of pizza, pint and plenty of Wales Euro wins. C’mon Cymru! 03 Please note large print copies of our magazine are available on request. Please contact our Box Office on 029 2030 4400. Art 029 2030 4400 chapter.org Art 05 ART IN THE BAR STEVEN SHEARER: SORRY STEVE Fri 18 Mar — Sun 19 June Sorry Steve (1999) is a scrawled, hand written note which has been enlarged in scale until it is elevated into a statement. It is intentionally provocative in its presentation as the voice in the text places itself in a position of power over ‘Steve’. Shearer’s text works, or ‘poems’ as he describes them, explore how language and conversations which we perceive as fleeting can be retained and elevated into collective consciousness. This work forms part of an archive of texts, lyrics and statements which look at issues around alienation, isolation and how hierarchies can be enforced through language. In his wider practice, Shearer works across a range of media, creating installations that combine elements of drawing, painting, photography, collage and text. His work explores what lies beneath the public view and takes a closer look at youth subcultures and uncelebrated cultural movements. By positioning this statement in Chapter’s Caffi Bar it invites us to question the nature of high and low culture and who make the choices. About Steven Shearer Steven Shearer was born in New Westminster, Canada in 1968. He now lives and works in Vancouver. He has exhibited internationally with solo exhibitions at Charles Riva Collection, Belgium; the Galerie Eva Presenhuber in Zurich; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, Canada; The New Museum and the Barbara Gladstone Gallery, New York; IKON Gallery, Birmingham; and the Renaissance Society in Chicago. In 2011 he was selected to represent Canada at the 54th Venice Biennale. Steven Shearer, Sorry Steve, 1999 04 06 Art 029 2030 4400 chapter.org Support US 07 COMING SOON! Not since the 1958 World Cup has Wales been represented at an international football tournament. Now that the Welsh team has broken the curse and finally qualified, surely nothing will stand between them and ultimate glory? Surely Ashley Williams will be lifting the trophy on high come the 10th July? Surely Cardiff’s own Gareth Bale will net a hattrick against England? Well… maybe. However the tournament plays out, we’re sure you’ll agree that this is a bit of a landmark in Welsh sporting culture, and worthy of celebration. The workshops will culminate in performances where the children will interview audience members and re–design and re– make their clothes live and then narrate a fashion show of the pimped–up outfits. Are you in or are you chicken? Theatre Skam was formed in Victoria, Canada in 1995 with a mission to create a contemporary theatre that is innovative and entertaining and above all never boring. £10/£8 “Theatre as it should be. Created by Wales Millennium Centre and supported by Colwinston Charitable Trust Arts, Arts Council of Wales and Cardiff Council. Georgia + support from Summer Ghost Fri 3 June 8pm Georgia Barnes is as believable a sensual soul-bearer as she is raucous provocateur, multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter. Born and raised in north–west London, Georgia has steadily established herself as an important fixture in the city’s most singular and imaginative artistic circles, playing drums for Kwes and Kate Tempest among others. Gradually stepping out from behind the drums, she emerged as an irresistible creative force in her own right with 2014’s Come In EP. Influenced by artists such as Missy Elliot, MIA and Karin Dreijer Andersson, Georgia’s debut album — Georgia — marks her out as an immaculate curator, distinctive songwriter and self–taught producer of soulful, progressive and highly–defined electronic pop. £12 Age Guidance: 14+ https://soundcloud.com/georgia_hb Sianed Jones Sat 4 June 5pm Join international artist Sianed Jones for an evening of virtuosic vocals and violin playing. Sianed has worked as a composer, performer and collaborator with a vast array of artists from different disciplines and cultures, ranging from choreographers and theatre practitioners to writers and film makers. Following an upbringing steeped in the choral and poetic traditions of Wales, her research into vocal techniques has taken her to Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Whilst her composition and performance bears the influences and musical curiosity of her travels, the heart of her music is uniquely her own. £10 Nikolai Galen sings Jacques Brel Sat 4 June 8.30pm Former frontman of The Shrubs, Nick Hobbs, better known these days as Nikolai Galen, performs an interpretation of Jacques Brel’s work. Considered a master of the modern chanson, Jacques Brel recorded more than 120 of his own songs, becoming one of the most popular singers of French songs and a major influence in the wider music world. A free– improvising performer known for exploring the very limits of the voice, Istanbul–based Galen will use his own translations and perform a capella to allow the texts to stand on their own. Some of the songs remain close to Brel’s, some not; some float between music and speech, between singing and acting, just as the texts float between lyrics and poetry, between music and literature. Galen’s Festival of Voice appearance coincides with the release of a new album capturing his unique adaptation of Brel’s work, Songs From The Low Lands. £12 Slowly Rolling Camera Thu 9 June 8pm Considered to be one of the leading lights of the “nu– soul”/electro groove genre. Currently making a significant impact on the UK and European music scenes their original and imaginative compositions fuse jazz, soul, trip hop and electronic music to create a truly unique musical soundscape. Their critically–acclaimed eponymous debut album, released on Edition records in February last year, brilliantly captures the impact of their live gigs, with All About Jazz commenting “It’s beautiful, imaginative and ambitious”. Their latest EP, “Into the Distance” continues this lush aural trajectory, evoking comparisons to iconic groups such as Portishead, and Massive Attack. £15/£12 www.slowlyrollingcamera.com chapter.org Performance Dybbuk: Momus Sings Bowie VERITY STANDEN IN ASSOCIATION WITH TOBACCO FACTORY THEATRES David Bowie is the cultural figure without whom Momus (and many other artists) simply wouldn’t have existed. Like the dybbuk of Jewish mythology, Bowie was a sum of stolen souls, a collection of all the most impressive gestures and talents of cultural figures he’d encountered and been smitten by. In his Dybbuk cabaret Momus presents an unashamedly dark and leftfield take on Bowie’s work, concentrating on the early cabaret work, the demos, the flickering shadows of Brecht and Brel, the avant– garde and eccentric moments, the symphonic poems. Songs Bowie never performed live himself are unfurled in unexpected yet faithful new readings, accompanied by video projections showing the many imitators whose souls the great dybbuk so wonderfully spirited away. Momus aka Nick Currie is an author, art–critic, professional thinker, blogger, singer and songwriter supreme. An early stalwart of the Creation Records label, Momus has, over the last 25 years, released almost as many albums, all of them innovative, intriguing, atypical and perverse. Mmm Hmmm 13 Clockwise from top left: Sianed Jones, Dybbuk: Momus Sings Bowie, Mmm Hmmm Performance Slowly Rolling Camera. Image: Serge Melkovert 12 Fri 10 June 8pm £15/£12 www.imomus.com Sat 11 June 8pm A new piece of a cappella song theatre A playful, poignant musical journey shaped by three exceptional female voices jumping between sound worlds and lyrical styles. Using intricate vocal techniques and rich harmony, Mmm Hmmm holds a magnifying glass up to snapshots of everyday life. One moment a fragile apology, the next a perilous trip to a train buffet car… Verity Standen’s original a cappella songs evoke the awkward, heartrending and hilarious moments that characterise what it means to be human. £10/£8 www.veritystanden.com 029 2030 4400 chapter.org Glen Manby Quintet Wed 1 June 8pm Alto saxophonist Glen Manby brings his exciting new jazz quintet to Chapter for its Wales debut. The band features some of the busiest and most respected jazz musicians in Britain today: Steve Waterman winner of the trumpet category in the British Jazz Awards 2014; pianist Leon Greening, described as ”one of the finest pianists this country has ever produced”; drummer Matt Home, who, as well as being one of the most in–demand drummers on the national circuit, appears regularly at Ronnie Scott’s as part of the house band; as does bassist Adam King, winner of The Worshipful Company of Musicians Jazz Young Musician Award 2015. They will be playing selections from their forthcoming Arts Council of Wales funded new CD release, Homecoming. £10/£8 www.glenmanby.com www.stevewaterman.co.uk www.adamkingbass.com DANA MICHEL IN CO-PRODUCTION WITH CHAPTER PRESENT UK PREMIER OF: Mercurial George Sat 18 June 7pm A quirky plunge into the unconventional universe of an inimitable performer. Bizarre, but also comical. Dana Michel is a free electron, spinning under boundless skies. “I only just got a bit of dirt under the nails with the last thing. Now wading through the hairy rubble of a preliminary anthropological dig. So much debris! I couldn’t have predicted how much debris there would be and how much work I had created for myself in waking this beast.” — Dana Michel Canadian choreographer, Dana Michel, returns to Chapter this summer after making an impact at Cardiff Dance Festival 2015 with her piece “Yellow Towel”. £12/£10 Contains brief scenes of nudity Performance 15 From L to R: Dance Roads, Miramar Performance From L to R: Glen Manby, Mercurial George, Image: Camille McOuat 14 COREO CYMRU AND CHAPTER PRESENT: TRIONGL PRESENT: Dance Roads Miramar Tue 7 + Wed 8 June 8pm Thu 16 + Fri 17 June 7.30pm Please note this is a bilingual production, however it is accessible to non–Welsh speakers. An English precis will be available before the performance. A one man show by one of Wales’ best mimics, capturing perfectly his story from being a troubled 6th form pupil, ‘out of tune’ with his surroundings, to establishing the iconic pop group, y Ficar, thus enabling him to realize his dream of finding his voice and making it as a professional performer. An exciting production combining music, parodies and impersonations, with the odd satirical comment on the Welsh rock scene. £12/£10/£8 Age 14+ (Strong language) After the death of her husband, 74 year old Enid is forced to sell the house she’s lived in for most of her life. She watches from her neighbours’ window as the new owners arrive to transform it into their new holiday home. They renovate it, rename it and finally return to the city, leaving the house empty. Enid, now homeless, decides to take matters into her own hands. A darkly funny show exploring what it is we call ‘home’. Interstellar. 2001. What do these award–winning films have in common? Visionary directors have created all three and none of them are particularly funny. With stunning 3D actors and minimal special effects, this three–hand comedy is sure to be the complete opposite. Combining live performance and video design, Oddity charts the journey of three unconventional astronauts as they embark on their mission to Mars. With a series of flashbacks and riotously devised action, we witness the progression towards a tense climax; two minutes before the oxygen runs out. This performance is part of the Cardiff Fringe Theatre Festival. £7 www.cardifffringetheatrefestival.co.uk Wed 22 June 7.30pm Award–winning comedians Simon Munnery and Jordan Brookes come to Chapter to deliver preview performances of their brand new stand–up shows.
