The plight of the tigers got us thinking about how hard it is for animals in general in this country. This week, we celebrate all the lovely creatures we share our environs with. From animal themed rooms (page 2), to pet tips (page 3), wild styles (page 4), to animal sensitivity (pages 6-7), we have quite the safari for you. Let us know how we’re doing! If you are bringing home pets for recreation, keep in mind that, the animal is counting on you to not only provide them food but also a loving family that will look after them no matter what the circumstances are. It isn’t easy, but it can be made if you follow these basic tips bigstock Once upon a time, all creatures lived together in the jungle. Over time, as humans became smarter, they built cities, leaving their actual habitat behind. And that’s not it; now for their own greed, they kill animals just to make their dwellings elegant, beautiful and desirable. This week TMAG pays a tribute to the World Animal Day and shares tons of ideas which are truly animal friendly and, yet as lovely and lively like the real animals it selves. We can’t begin without selecting the right animal for the right theme for your room. It is the first level work because based on that the ambience can be selected. For creating the environment, four walls will be the best option to begin with. Wall Mural OR sticking gigantic posters, both will be cool, and also if you have enough time in hand. Also, if you are good at painting go for a wall mural. Imagine a big fat elephant, a naughty monkey and a python is looking at you with a huge smile! Don’t these make you feel like SIMBA? Instead of being choosy, paint or stick any kind of tree on your wall and adorn that with snakes, monkeys, and panthers. Pick animal printed bed sheets and pillow covers. Two things can be done; the room can be either decorated by one specific animal print or can be diversified by using different prints. A framed replica skin of alligators or tigers can be hung on any walls but the wall must be painted in a single basic tone. Alongside, a bunch of plastic or fabric made actual size deer, lion, and cheetah can be placed any corner of the room. Adorn your room with replicas and spread the responsibility sense towards animal rights in the society. Saudia afrin TM AG TU ESDAY, NOVE M B E R 5, 201 3 bigstock What do I want? Make a list of the animals, which you find interesting, narrow down the pros and cons of having it as a pet, and then make a proper decision. If you’re a beginner, it’s best to start with one pet. Buy or adopt? Most pet stores won’t tell you the origin of where they get the animals, from, so chances of you ending up with a sick little kitten or puppy is quite high. Look around, pass the message to your friends that you are looking to adopt pets. Food Feeding them out of love is not a good excuse for letting your pets eat more than necessity. If you feed them too often, that is what they’ll expect from you at all times. Also, don’t spoil them by offering food while you are eating; it’ll encourage them to beg for food. Medical services This will cost you an arm and a leg, but if you’re really concerned about Fluffy coming down with a fever, spend a little, after all you signed up for getting a pet in the first place. Also, while you’re at it, keep track of the bills the vet issues you. Affection Discipline your pets, even if they don’t listen to you, never mistreat them. Animals are emotional, if they get the tiniest hint of being tortured, they might run away and never come back. rubab nayeem khan Saudia afrin TMAG’s Room of the week! Urban Youth Festival bigstock No exclusive relationships Cats can be moody and require constant attention. Hence avoid excessive cuddling and feeding or else it will warm up to you only and sneer at everyone else. When you are out in school, make sure you ask someone at home to give your pet food on time. If no one’s home, be kind to it’s growling stomach and feed it in the morning so that, when you are gone, it doesn’t claw around your house causing a rebellion. Pour in some dry cat food and forget worrying about your little mitten. Potty training Yes, you have school and classes, but do not forget that your pet also needs to use the loo. Drive sense in your fido or your kitty so that while you are gone, they know that the plush rugs, the marble floors and the bed isn’t their defecating spot. This shall take a few weeks, so make sure to take out half an hour everyday to train it. Be persistent and patient and direct them to their spot and eventually they’ll come around. They always do. Schedule your playtime Yes schedules don’t always pan out as planned, but maintaining one can at least help you keep track of your day. If you have someone to help you at home, then that stashes half your problems. Let your fluff ball have a toy to play with when you are toiling away at school and classes. Before you head out to school, give your fish its grub and change the water. Take a break from your studies and give your pet the much needed love and attention. Leave other soft toys so that when you are gone it doesn’t miss you as much! natasha rahman A photo exhibition “Portraits of Politics” by A J Ghani is going on at Urban Youth Festival from 24 October at the Goethe-Institute in Dhanmondi. After the huge success last time, the youth festival came back again with a month long programme, and will continue till 24 November. Through his lenses he tries to represent particular objects connected with politics and how ordinary people cannot distinguish the truth between politics and reality. Ghani says “With my photographs of those objects, I tried to convey the message that we should treat a cocktail as bomb or a weapon of destruction but not as politics.” TM AG TU E SDAY, N OVE MB E R 5, 20 1 3 4 tmag FASHION FACE-OFF Wardrobe Check Gaga over Z Prints Zebra, leopard, tiger … you name it and it’s there … and it’s all over town! While many would feel apprehensive about wearing animal prints so as not to look common, there’s nothing that makes a girl feel bolder than this! An instant fashion statement, let’s see how we can use this to our advantage Scarves Short scarves or dupattas, animal prints make a bolder statement when minimised. Since they are eye catching, too much can be overkill. If you are going for an overall animal print kameez, make sure you accesorize it with neutral jewelleries. Tights Animal print tights are all the rage now. Since most animal prints contain tones of black, they look ultimately classy when paired with a plain black chiffon shirt. Remember, one article of clothing in animal print is enough. If you opt for tights, let the scarf be. If it’s the scarf you choose, wear some plain tights. Shoes Beautiful wedges can be found in animal prints at the Chourangi Bazar, Elephant road and upscale stores like Celebrations also offer pumps and heels in the same print. You may want to wear these heels or wedges with the scarf. Since both are accessories, they’ll pair brilliantly to bring out a classy look for you. Bags No, it’s not the huge handbags we talk about, but the tiny clutches. Animal prints look great on purses like that and will go right on with either matching shoes or your scarf. You may even try carrying them on fully printed dresses or shirts, if you feel you can pull off the overdo. Shades If you’re a true animal print lover, and would love to have at least one accessory or more in classy animal printed patterns that you can use on a regular basis- shades it is! The patterns on them are light enough for everyday use and is not as intimidating as on scarves or clothes. Munira Fidai bigstock Beauty Check Look of the Week Poor Fluffy… What if someone told you that your beloved rabbit or hamster will go to a lab to be experimented on and there is nothing you can do to stop it? Well, though the concept of animal testing is not foreign to us, just thinking about our own pet going through that ordeal is enough to make us shudder. Harmless albino rabbits, guinea pigs and rats go through some very harsh tests to ensure we get the full worth of our cosmetics The draize eye test Basically, a substance is placed in one eye of the rabbit and without allowing it to react normally, their eyes are tested first after an hour and then every 24 hours up to 2 weeks. Though a rabbit’s eye is significantly different from a human eye, and more sensitive to pain, poor fluffy suffers from inflammation of the eyes and sores, usually resulting in death. Acute toxicity test Usually this test is used to determine how dangerous a chemical is if inhaled, taken in, or touched. This is known for being a lethal test where, even if the tests are discontinued after observing discomfort or ailments in the rats, the animals are invariably killed so that a necropsy can produce signs of internal damage. Dermal penetration test When skincare creams say they have a “deep penetration formula”, it is usually rats that are used to determine just how deep the formula is. The rats are then killed in order to see the rate of penetration, even though there are alternative tests and the skin of a rat is a lot different than that of a human being. There are many such tests being done on harmless animals, and even though a lot of this may be prevented, they are not because alternative means may increase costs. What would you want? A beautiful skin at the expense of bunny rabbits that belong to the woods and not labs, or a beautiful skin at the expense of a few more takas? munira fidai bigstock Madame DeVille You don’t have to hurt animals in order to pull of this kind of chic. Gemini (May 21-Jun 20) Car Talk Beast in disguise It’s taken almost 40 years for Jaguar to dream up the successor to its infamous E-Type, Britain’s most important sports car in a decade. It is the Jaguar F-Type. We knew it will be quiet, comfortable and restrained, and the interior will be full of traditional leather and wood. So were we right? If you want to get focused with financial matters, don’t put off doing it later. Get started now; it’ll bode well for you in the long run. Cancer (Jun 21-Jul 22) You might bump into an old friend of yours at a social gathering, sometime this week. Don’t let this be just another meet and greet. Leo (Jul 23-Aug 22) Getting attention from loved ones will be the highlight of this week. Try not to freak if someone invades your privacy. Virgo (Aug 23- Sep 22) Your performances will change; don’t worry it’s a good thing. Someone you’ve been eyeing from a distance has been doing the same thing. Libra (Sep 23- Oct 22) In short, no! It is an X-rated, hardcore monster for the terminally unhinged. It has got such range of intoxicating noises. When you change up, it snorts like a hippo and when you put your foot down it bellows and then when you take it off again, it roars. Obviously you have never heard of a sound track like that. That is the sound of the 60s. And when you engage the sports exhaust system, which makes it even louder. It’s not all bark and no bite either. That 3.0 litre V6 engine is supercharged and delivers 375 fire spitting horse powers. It does 0-62 Mph in 4.8 seconds and has a top speed of 171 Mph. And this isn’t even the fast version; if you want, Jaguar will sell you a 488 horsepower V8. You would imagine that a car this loud and brutal would be as luxurious as a primary school wooden bench, but no. The roof can be lowered or raised even at 30 Mph, the switches are bronzed, the seats are electric and you can choose what shade of mood lighting you would like. The interior then is nicely sorted out but it is nothing compared to the exterior. We believe this is one of the best looking cars ever made. A lot of cars these days feel like laptops but this doesn’t. Yes, you can go into the computer and alter the characteristics of the car, but that being said, there is no double clutch gearbox just to smooth the 8-speed auto, there is no six way traction control or a complicated folding metal roof. It’s much simpler than that; engine at the front, drive to the rear and a big smiling piece of meat in the middle. The chassis is epic, so are the brakes and the steering. Behind the wheels then, it creates an impression that of a BMW M3 and that is high praise, except it’s not a BMW, it’s a Jag. Unfortunately, there are one or two issues that need mentioning. The boot space is horrible and then there is the price. The V6 version to cost around $80,000 and the V8 is an eye watering $100,000 but the biggest problem by a country mile is the ride. It feels like roller skating over ridged gravel and it’s even worse when you slow down, it’s just unbearably harsh. Happily, however, the ride gets better the faster you go. Which means that there is a way around the problem, drive fast! Let’s be honest, a car that looks this good, sounds this fantastic, and goes this fast that is no hardship at all. Tahsin Momin You might get a little homesick if a parent or sibling is away from you this week. They’ll be back; refrain from moping. Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21) This is a good week to be all ears, especially when you are present at an important event. This’ll do you good, sometime soon. Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21) Taking health issues lightly is a no-no for you this week. If you are in debt to someone own up to it ASAP! Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan19) If romance is making a comeback in your life, don’t fight it. Someone you despise might find that very quality attractive. Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18) Strangers might get a little chatty with you; avoid sharing personal details. The last thing you’d want is people poking their nose into your business Pisces (Feb 19-Mar20) Paperwork isn’t as boring as you think it is; use this week to brush up on your writing skills. TM AG TU E SDAY, N OVE MB E R 5, 20 1 3 6 tmag HOT TOPIC all creatures bi Surrounded as we are by a concrete jungle, it’s hard to remember that we share the planet with other species. Whether they’re domesticated darlings or wild things, animals in this country are leading a precarious existence. TMAG takes a mini-safari through Dhaka to see just how bad it is. This week, we sent in a few volunteers to places like the Mirpur Zoo and the pet stores in Katabon, to view the living conditions of the animals there. This is what they had to say Caged souls Katabon is one of the largest pet hubs in the city that holds numerous types and species of mice, hamsters, birds, cats, dogs and fish, all of which are both sold and purchased. The health and condition of these animals are seemingly proper, but some cases proved otherwise. The shopkeepers frequently bang the cages with force as punishment, smoke near the animals and often agitate them for amusement. Many of these pets are not yet vaccinated, and pose as a threat to those surrounding them. As far as their diet goes, they are being fed sufficiently but in a standardised manner. Treatment is carried out according to weight of the animal, not breed. The sources of the animals, when asked, are private contractors or imports. They are extremely vague about this area. No registration or papers are required to be filled out when the pets are bought or sold. Not much speculation is required to see that these people have little concern about the animals’ well-being, but more for their face value and earning ability. rad sharar BIN KAMAL 5 things you NEVER say to someone whose pet dies The concept of animal rights is something alien to most Bangladeshis. So when confronted with the rare few that do care about their fellow creatures, many of them don’t know how to react. TMAG gives you a sampler of five common statements made in response to an animal lover who’s just lost a pet, and why for the sake of humanity, you’d be better off saying nothing at all. “It was just an animal” Umm, what? That’s like telling someone that their dead baby brother was just “some dude”. No. For a serious animal lover, a pet is a legit member of the family, and the grief at losing that family member is very real. Minimising the loss is a very insensitive thing to do. “You can always get another one” You know how annoying it is to hear a similar sentiment being expressed right after a painful break-up? Now consider the element of tragedy, and it’s much, much worse. “Next time, don’t breed. It’s problem You might just be t helpful, but you’re r the pet to its breed same statement we to a person, the pe making it would be of town as a racist. “I can’t believe ho you spent on it” Whenever you start measuring the wor life according to mo values, be it a perso or a cat, you just co sounding so ulless. Animals in captivity Sense and Sensibility The living condition of animals at the Mirpur Zoo is very unhealthy. The cages in which the monkeys are kept are so dirty that it gives out an awful stench which the makes living unsanitary for them. The lions and tigers are underfed, and the hedgehogs are drinking contaminated water. There is We decided to complement our findings by asking young people how they feel about the way ordinary people in this country treat their pets and other animals. Here are some of their thoughts: no proper routine diet that is being followed throughout the zoo. Lack of medical facilities also add to their miseries, particularly because vets or zookeepers are not monitoring animal activities. From the looks of it, much isn't being done for wild life preservation there. syed azraf zaman “Well I feel that it’s the upbringing of the kids to some extent if they were told at an early age that abuse of any sort of God’s creation is wrong. But we live in a society where people have hardly anything they seemed to be disturbed by. The amount of violence all around is disturbing as it is. So to them animal abuse is very minute.” - Adnan Khan “It’s very depressing how people behave with street animals. Three years back, Dhaka City Corporation killed my dog, right in front of me. They may carry diseases, but we don’t have the rights to torture them. Despite the fact that, animals are being attacked for no reason, it’s relieving to see a few kind souls, who go out on a limb to look after them.” - Aurel Khan “You don’t need education, to express humanity. There is this carpenter near my house who looks after all the stray dogs around his shop. He feeds them every day, and at night, all the dogs would go inside his shop and shack up with him.” - Nusrat Tabassum Compiled by rubab nayeem khan mad photos: bigstock TM AG TU E SDAY, N OVE MB E R 5, 20 1 3 8 tmag written in the Stars Rendezvous with the wild Have you ever asked yourself how it feels to be out in the wild? Believe it or not there are people out there who do exactly that to save the wild from getting extinct. This week TMAG brings you an upclose experience with the wild life saviours There are a few selective organizations in the country which specifically aim to protect and empower animal welfare. Apart from that and minimal government support, not much more is being done on the problem. Contact with faculties and clubs of schools in Dhaka have resulted with little evidence of any steps or movements against Animal Cruelty. Universities, however, have made a few attempts. However, the Environment Club of Independent University of Bangladesh focused indirectly on Animal Rights through social awareness programs. In 2012, Independent University of Bangladesh had a presentation on a bird named Spoon Billed Sandpiper, which is a joint Russian and Bangladesh project. The goal of the presentation was to spread awareness of its probable extinction. Although the initiative is present, the absence in awareness of Animal Cruelty lags the urgency of action of these institutions. This knowledge should be enough for those who wish to raise a voice must realize they are not alone. The Earth club of North South University was more direct this year in their latest event “Encounters 6,” a photography competition based on Destruction of Animal Habitat. In his own words, Adnan M. S. Fakir, Director of Finding Bangladesh How, when, where and what animals have our team encountered during the filming Bangladesh is packed with a variety of animals. Given that, this time, we have done our shooting in Barisal and Khulna divisions. The regions being packed with river bodies, we have encountered a whole set of snakes. The most beautiful amongst them was the white-lipped pit viper which we stumbled into in the Sundarbans. We also met river dolphins (locally named shushuk), estuarine crocodiles (which is one of the endangered reptiles), spotted deer and many different crabs. While we have come across bengal tiger footprints, we did not encounter the gorgeous beast. Other than that, however, we have found a stack of spiders - both poisonous and non-poisonous, iguanas, the fourlegged snake or round-nosed monitor, and waves of red crabs in Kuakata’s Crab Island. What can be done to protect animal rights Absence of Animal Rights in Bangladesh is prominent. Furthermore, absence of it in the shrinking Sundarbans is even more noticeable. Unplanned human development, industrial pollution, expanding agriculture, overfishing, coal mining, threats from offshore oil spills and deforestation all threaten finding bangladesh the Sundarbans. This is particularly sad because historically care of the Sundarbans was upheld even in the Mauryan Empire, dating back to the 4th century BC. Laws have to be set and more importantly acted upon to protect the flora and fauna of the lands, amongst which many are endangered. The river dolphins for example, that were abundant even 10-15 years ago are now listed as endangered species by IUCN's Red List (2008), facing a very high risk of extinction. About our “Meet the Animals” video We have filmed some of these animals in the “Meet the Animals” promo for Finding Bangladesh 2. Ehsan Kabir, CEO/Director, Green Ink on the causes of extinction of Royal Bengal Tigers Deforestation has decreased the number of deer's in Sundarbans, which is a prime food source for the bengal tigers. They often come out of their territory in search of fresh water since the number of fresh water pond has gone down drastically due to the rising salinity. That is when they get into conflict with the people that are living outside the forests, thus leading to the struggle for survival between man and wild. syed zakir hossain TM AG TU ESDAY, NOVE M B E R 5, 201 3 tmag 9 comic book nonFiction Fiction YOU WRITE IT book NEON CONFESSIONS My random thoughts were interrupted by the sound of faint footsteps; and the noise kept on increasing till the man appeared right in front of me. The man sat right beside me and almost ignored my presence. He stared lifelessly at the horizon. I eyed my newest companion with hopes that we may spark up a conversation but nope, this dude was just like me – silent and cold. The stranger was shabbily dressed and held something in his hand. Something tall, thin and cylindrical – a pen maybe. Who was he? A writer, walking in the lonely midnight streets to find out a plot for new story? Or maybe an undercover detective trying to catch a ruthless drug lord? Suddenly, the man took that “thing” on one hand and plunged it deep beneath his other hand. Now I got it! It wasn’t a pen, it was a syringe! My companion was a drug-addict! I stood beside him in bewilderment as he let the drugs take over his senses. He sat there motionless. A soft, almost inaudible sound broke the silence. I glanced at the stranger. He was crying. “I want to get out of this hell. Someone please break my curse. I don’t want to live like this anymore,” he kept on repeating. I wanted to go out and hug this poor fellow, but I could not. Because I’m a prisoner too, chained to the ground ever since I was born. And all I could do was to provide light to my companion weeping below me - a lonely neon lamp post. Flight Farhat Chowdhury Zishan Grit, dust and bruises We never gave it a moment’s thought. One moment we’re having a cup of tea in Dhaka and the next we’re entering the pitch black atmosphere that Srimangal had in store for us. The greenery was almost invisible with the darkness of 3am overwhelming the smooth, curvy road. Suddenly all those videos we watched about such a trip became a reality. It was almost as if the four of us had nothing else to think about other than the ride forward, further into the darkness, into the abyss. Srimangal is one of the most beautiful places in Bangladesh, as we (Ashraf, Nahid, Iqbal and I) experienced first-hand. It is nature at its best and one can never fully experience the raw wilderness unless you take your mountain bikes and shred through the hills and trails. Relying on nothing but a ‘Google Map’ app, we cycled around places beyond our expectation. Being home to the infamous “Lawachara National Reserve” and “Madhobpur Lake”, Srimangal had pushed us to our limits and further beyond. The highroads maybe smooth, but the inclining roads were extremely treacherous and took its toll on us. However, what goes up must come down, and our rewards were the sweeping rides on the downhill roads reaching speeds of 54km/h! Despite all the training back home, nothing had prepared us for the smallest of small trails within the forest and remotest villages. Our bikes took it all. Mud, dust, grass, sand, water, hills and so much more – whatever it threw at us, we tackled. A total of 3 days was spent riding as we explored Srimangal in and out, and withstood the crowds that formed to see us with our gears on, and answered each and every question they bombarded us with. We returned on the 4th day and realizing there’s always more places to explore. We shared one last cup of tea in Dhaka, pre-planning the next trip before parting ways. Next Stop: Peak 69, Nilgiri. Q. Zulyadain Islam We’re not hunters. We’re Fighters When we think of Iraq and the Gulf Wars (whichever one you care to imagine), we tend to think of it in terms of loss of human lives, damage to property, and certain “oily” considerations. We’re usually so caught up in human dramas that we arrogantly forget that we do share the planet with other living species, and that our wars and conflicts do have an impact on their lives. Few works drive that home as beautifully as “Pride of Baghdad”, a graphic novel written by Brian K Vaughan and illustrated by Nico Henrichon. The skinny A small pride of zoo lions find unexpected freedom in the aftermath of the US-led airstrike on Baghdad in 2003. As they roam the unfamiliar environs of this ancient city, each lion takes on a different viewpoint of the war. The pros While Vaughan employs the fairly common device of animals as metaphors for human socio-political issues, he still does manage to drive the animal rights issue home. The commentary on the lives of Iraqis, both under Saddam and under the threat of foreign invasion, is subtly handled, and never too on-the-nose. The cons General parental advisory stuff. There’s plenty of graphic violence, and a couple of allusions to sex. “Pride of Baghdad” won the IGN award for best original graphic novel in 2006. Sabrina Fatma Ahmad A book with very few words, Jonathan Livingstone Seagull by Richard Bach conveys a very important message. “For most gulls it is not flying that matters, but eating. For this gull, though, it was not eating that mattered, but flight.” This book is, in the broadest of words, an allegory of what happens in real life: Conformism, daring to be different, the fear of rejection, giving up when it gets too heart wrenching. The story of the incredible seagull is one that will leave you paralleling your life with that of the bird, and rethinking the world around you. In its themes of overcoming conformism and reaching true potential, this book sheds light on the atmosphere in today’s 21st century world, where being fresh and innovative is key. There is an exceptional charm in the words of this book that can only be experienced through a read. As a reviewer put it; “this is an ideal gift for a demotivated person and a great read for the ambitious.” A timeless story that goes far beyond the life of a single seagull, this book is a must read. Recommended for everyone, whether you enjoy philosophical books or not. The value in this compact, but powerful tale will not leave you disappointed. This is available for download in the form of ebooks or it can be ordered from PBS bookstore in Shantinagar. That drum roll you probably just heard. That drum roll was a snare drum roll. We apologize if you didn’t get the joke though. Drummers get it. In all seriousness, snare drums are the most popular drums in the world along-side the bass drum, and if you’re a drummer who likes to explore his/her sound a lot more, the best thing to do would be to explore different snare drums. If you didn’t know what a snare drum is, it is used in marching bands, orchestras, drum sets, and it’s no wonder they are one of the most important instruments that contribute to the rhythm in musical pieces. On a drum set the snare drum sits on a stand right between your knees and receives the most hits after the hi-hats. So when choosing your snare drum for the already set up drum kit, consider what kind of music you intend to play. There are different snare drums for Rock, Jazz, Metal and Marching bands. While it is possible to use one drum for all types of music, it is evident that a single snare drum cannot excel in all kinds of music. Our personal recommendation would be to go for a ready series if you’re a first timer buying an extra snare. Our recommendations are The Yamaha Stage Custom for rock and metal, The Ludwig Black Beauty for rock, Pearl Chad Smith signature for straight up funk and finally the Tama Mighty Hoop Piccolo for most kinds of music, especially jazz. When buying a snare drum, also consider the size and material of the shell and finally the crack and ring it gives you when you play it. Sushi Cat is a browser based puzzle solving game brought to us by game developers Armor Games. Our purry friend faces a lot of challenges which can be solved if only he were bigger. The game plays somewhat like pinball, the differences being that there are more pegs and you launch our friend, the cat who’s dropped from the top by a pair of chopsticks. Your goal is to collect as many sushi rolls as possible, and to do this, you use the paddles at the bottom to bounce the cat back up and through the pegs. You gadget hunt are required to eat a certain amount of sushi per level to attain a “Full Belly” and you can always earn various score multipliers and bonus bounces based on where you drop the cat. You are in control of where you drop the cat, the rest of the game however, is purely up to chance. The game has very cute Japanese style aesthetics and a very sophisticated physics engine. The levels are also very dynamic, starting off with the very easy to slightly daunting levels - with spinning, sliding, and angled platforms. Without giving much away, rest assured, it is a very fun game with adorable aesthetics, though it could definitely use more than 15 levels. Fuad M Hossain Lighter, thinner, faster! Remember “thinnovation”? That was Apple’s punch line when it first introduced the MacBook Air, a laptop so skinny that it could easily fit in an envelope. Six years later, they followed a similar route in their line-up of tablet with the introduction of the iPad Air. As its name suggests, the Air comes with APP OF THE WEEK Les appels Platform iOS, Android, Windows, Blackberry Size 19 MB Price Free Imagine life could be so much easier if you could simply make phone calls from your PC to not just iPhones but also Android, Windows, and Blackberry devices too. That’s exactly what LINE does in a slick interface that’s sure to prove popular with PC users that have friends and family using different mobile devices. LINE is a Japanese based app that allows you to make free video calls and send free messages to iPhone, Android, a revamped design that sheds almost 200 grams of it’s weight, along with a couple millimetres of thickness and a significant amount of bezel area. Even then it maintains the same 9.7-inch Retina display seen in the previous models of the iPads. While that’s impressive in its own right, Apple also managed to make the device more powerful; thanks to the same A7 chip that powers the iPhone 5s. If you thought you had a tough choice last year, the iPad Air faces even tougher competition in 2013 and it’s likely to get yet fiercer over the coming years. Though the Air will continue to be a solid option thanks to its size, weight, performance and battery life, the Nexus 10 still offers a great experience at a lower price. The Air may lose a few potential buyers to the iPad mini, which is the Air in a smaller size. The features, specs and performance is roughly the same, so if you’ve been holding out for a more compact iOS tablet with a great screen, you’ll want to hang in there a bit longer, but it’s hard to go wrong with the Air if you are in need of as much screen space as possible. Tahsin Momin Windows and Blackberry phones as well as other Macs and PCs. LINE is also available for Mac meaning PC users can communicate with friends and family that use PCs as well as Macs. Even though LINE does feature video calling, you can still send short video and audio messages. Call quality using LINE is pretty good, although this will depend highly on your internet connection and 3G network. LINE is also jam packed with emoticons to make messaging more fun. This latter feature is particularly popular with teens and has helped make it one of the most successful apps in the market. tahsin momin Born to run What are some adjectives that come to mind when you hear the words Steven Spielberg? Sentimental? Syrupy? Thrilling? Feel-good? War Horse is all of that, and there is no reason to expect anything less. The master’s best qualities are all on display in this beautiful epic about a boy and his horse. Stand back, pessimists. If a good old-fashioned man-and-hishorse buddy story set against an uplifting John Williams score and Technicolor sunset doesn’t bring tears to your eyes, don’t watch this. This one is a plays by the rules of old Hollywood and does it spectacularly. Only Spielberg could pull this off with a straight face. Horse lovers, be warned: this movie will ¬make you weep. The story revolves around Albert, a boy living on a farm around WWI, and his horse Joey. Joey is bought at an auction and is at first thought of as no good. But then Albert and Joey bond and become best friends. But then the war messes with their lives. Joey is taken away from Albert and sent off to battle. Albert himself enlists in the army. Both of them go through immense trials. But they never lose their hope. Spielberg’s skill in directing nonhuman creatures is well known. He has also shown the brutality of war in his more serious films. Here, with Joey in the trenches of Great War, he brings his skills together, and with dazzling results. One particular scene involving Joey doing a solo run in the battle field through No Man’s Land is pure virtuosity and a reminder of why Spielberg is paid the big bucks. The different horses that play Joey show a lot of emotion. The fact that real horses, and not CGI, was used throughout makes the film that much more impressive. War Horse may not be Spielberg’s greatest work, but it might just be his most representative one. Abak Hussain TM AG TU E SDAY, N OVE MB E R 5, 20 1 3 12 tmag Take TMAG’s PERSONALITY QUIZ Now!
