Opening Prayer:
Lord our God, be with us as we recognize these young people who have spent
time and skills to know more about you. The awards are a small token of
appreciation as they form a more intimate association with the church. Keep
them close to you during their formative years so that they will be instilled with
the elements essential to the growth and development of vocations. We ask this
in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:4-7, 12-13
A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians.
Brothers and sisters: There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but they all come
from the same Spirit. There are different ways to serve the same Lord, and we
can each do different things. Yet the same God works in all of us and helps us in
everything we do.
The Spirit has given each of us a special way of serving others.
The body of Christ has many different parts, just as any other body does. Some
of us are Jews, and others are Gentiles. Some of us are slaves, and others are
free. But God’s Spirit baptized each of us and made us part of the body of Christ.
Now we each drink from the same Spirit.

Parvuli Dei
The Parvuli Dei emblem recognizes the work of Bear Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts in
discovering the presence of God in their daily lives, in their families, and parishes through a
wide range of activities. These activities help the boys develop a good, positive self-image
through the contributions they make to the group or community. The activities are familyoriented, and much of the success of the program depends upon parent involvement.

St. Anne Medal
The St. Anne medal, for Department of Education, USCC. It was inaugurated
at the Sixth National Conference on Catholic Youth Work in Philadelphia in
November 1957, and was redesigned in 1980. It is the highest national
award in this field. The purpose of the award is to honor the outstanding service of adults contributing to the spiritual development of Catholic members
of girls organizations, and to further Catholic adult leadership in youth ministry through organizations serving girls.

The Catholic Committee on Scouting for the Diocese of Sacramento
provides the Bronze Pelican award to men and women as recognition for
contribution directly to the spiritual nourishment of Catholic boys and girls in
the scouting movement. The pelican has been used as a liturgical symbol
since the early days of Christianity. It denotes the tender care of the young by
the parent and by the Church. As such, it is an appropriate symbol for those
who give of themselves to the spiritual development of boys and girls in their
formation as Christian leaders.

St. George Emblem
The St. George emblem, presented by the local Catholic Committee on
Scouting, is a national recognition by the National Catholic Committee on
Scouting. The purpose of the St. George emblem is to recognize an
individual’s outstanding contribution to the spiritual development of Catholic
youth in the program of the Boy Scouts of America. It may be presented to
any adult (man or woman; clergy, religious, or laity; Catholic or non-Catholic)
who has made a significant contribution to using the Scouting program as a
Catholic youth ministry. A Scout does not earn the St. George emblem, but is
recommended by another person by application to the local Catholic
Committee. This emblem is presented only once to a given individual.

Footsteps of American Saints
This religious activity honors those men and women who led heroic lives of faith. Their words,
their deeds, and their devotion to prayer and to the sacraments, inspire all American Catholics.
The goal of this activity is to share the lives of several Saints so that the youth might relate to
what these people have done and maybe look to these individuals as role models.
The Rosary Series
The Rosary Series can be earned by all levels of Boy Scouts and Adults. The Rosary Series focuses on
the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary and How to Pray the Rosary. This is an opportunity for youth and
adults to learn more about their faith and earn patches for each Mystery of the Rosary and How to Pray
the Rosary
Pope Pius XII
The Pope Pius XII emblem recognizes those who have examined
how being a Christian affects daily life in the real world by
evaluation of their personal talents and abilities in light of possible
choice of lifestyle/vocation or ministry. Participants become more
active in the Catholic faith community and have the opportunity to
share and practice their faith among peers, while receiving the
guidance and feedback attuned to the ideals of Scouting.

Biographies - Adult Award Recipients
Most Reverend Bishop Jamie Soto - St. George Award
Since Bishop Soto was appointed the coadjutor Bishop of Sacramento Diocese on October 11,
2007, he’s been serving as the Chaplain for the Catholic Committee on Scouting in the diocese.
During these past eight (8) years, Bishop Soto has committed to the development and success of
the many events for scouts to develop their faith through events such as; religious award retreats
and celebration of Mass at retreats and Scout Expo (Beale Air Force Base). Bishop Soto has
shown his overall devotion to emphasize the spiritual development of young scouts through his
leadership, wisdom and words.
As the Chaplain for the Diocese of Sacramento, Bishop Soto has committed to honoring young
scouts and their achievements annually at the annual scout celebration at the Cathedral of the
Blessed Sacrament on the first Saturday of February. This event coincides with the annual celebration of Boy Scout Sunday on the first Sunday of February. The scouts (both girls and boys)
are grateful for Bishop Soto’s decision to support their scouting achievements by prioritizing
this event on his calendar every year, and his willingness to share time with scouts to honor their
accomplishment with the respective religious awards.
Bishop Soto was ordained for Priestly serves in the Diocese of Orange County, CA in June in
1982. He served the Diocese of Orange County as a priest and Auxiliary Bishop from 1982
until October 2007. During this time, he studied and received a Masters Degree in Social Work
from Columbia University. On March 23, 2000, then Monsignor Soto was named Titular
Bishop of Segia and Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Orange, CA by his Holiness, Pope John
Paul II.
On October 11, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI named Bishop Soto as the Coadjutor Bishop of the
Diocese of Sacramento. Bishop Soto served as Coadjutor Bishop, Moderator of the Curia, Vicar
of Hispanics and Other Ethnic Ministries, and represented many pastoral and civic groups. With
the retirement of Most Reverend Bishop Weigand, Bishop Soto became head of the Diocese of
Sacramento.
Over Bishop Soto’s eight (8) years, he has showed his commitment to the overall Sacramento
Region and Northern CA communities by involvement is civic groups. In 2010, Bishop Soto
joined together with other faith leaders in a drive to offset the millions of decreased federal
funds. With the region’s sizeable churchgoing population, local faith-based organizations are
expanding their reach, leveraging their dollars and their resources by working with nonprofits to
maximize their impact. “Even if we lived in a perfect society, the church would still be compelled to provide charitable works,” Bishop Soto says. “The kind of work we do as a church is
dictated not just by the need, but by who we are and what we are called to be.
Biographies - Adult Award Recipients
Roberto Buendia – St. George Award
Roberto is a long time Scouter from the Mount Diablo/Silverado Council. He is serving in the
Chief Solano District. He has served as Wolf and Bear Den Leaders, a Webelo Den Leader,
Pack Committee Chairman. His leadership continued as Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster
and now Unit Commissioner. He has served on the Sacramento Catholic Committee on Scouting for a number of years. He has provided many excellent pictures of the various Religious
Retreats for Scouts as well as Recognition Ceremonies. He has completed various training
programs including Adult Leader, Scoutmaster and Unit Commissioner courses. While working
with Cub Scout Pack 254 in Fairfield, five Cub Scouts received the Parvuli Dei Award. Through
his leadership with Troop 254 Fairfield he guided seven Scouts through the Ad Altare Dei
Award. He is a member of Solano Pandemonium (Steel Drum Band), Class and Performance
Group Solano Community College. Lead (Tenor) Pan, Tenor Bass (4Bass) and 6 bass Pans.
Dance Unlimited, Dance Performances in parades and demonstrations. He assisted fundraising
for various causes in the Fairfield area, also supporting the local food bank. He is the Sunshine
Club Treasurer. This club supports the sick, grieving and employees in the area going through
hardships. He and his wife Cynthia have a son. Roberto received the Bronze Pelican Award in
2013.
Biographies - Adult Award Recipients
Mary Jo Columbus – St. George Award
Mary Jo was a Girl Scout in her youth. She has been active with the Boy Scouts as a Cub Scout
Den Leader, Assistant Den Leader, and Committee Member since 2006. She has guided and
recorded Cub Scouts accomplishments in earning their Service Awards. Arrow of Light Award,
A Year of Celebration Awards, belt loops, pins, and badges for Pack 65. Mary Jo completed
Cub Scout Leader Training in 2007, University of Scouting Program in 2008 and 2010, and
Webelos Den Leader Training in 2010. She is now serving as a Committee member and
involved in Boards of Reviews for Troop 286. She has reached out to Scouts and Scout parents
to inform them of the Boy Scouts Religious Emblem Program and Requirements. Mary Jo has
been an associate member of the National Catholic Committee on Scouting Boy Scouts of America and is a member of the Sacramento Catholic Committee on Scouting. She has served on the
Ad Altare Dei Scout Retreats as an Assistant Patrol Leader and Patrol Leader. She has been a
member of the Fellowship of Catholic Christian Women at St. Joseph’s Parish in Elk Grove
since 2007. In addition, she is currently active in a spiritual support group for the parents of
Confirmation children at the St. Maria Goretti Parish in Elk Grove. She is a member of the
University of San Francisco Chapter National Honor Society, Pi Alpha Alpha. Mary Jo and her
husband, Angel have one son.
Jill Dutra –St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award
Jill Dutra has been an active Scouting parent for 15 years. She has been a Girl Scout adult volunteer for 10 years at St. Mel in Fair Oaks, acting as a troop leader, service team member, event
coordinator, parish contact for Girl Scouts, and member of the Catholic Committee on Scouting.
Over the years, Jill has helped to establish Girl Scouting as a ministry at St. Mel. She partners
with Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts to organize Scout Sunday annually at St. Mel and
involves youth in the mass to accent the role that Scouting plays in our faith community.
Jill collaborated with Diana Amador, Boy Scout leaders, and members of the Catholic Committee
on Scouting to co-lead the first cooperative retreat for the Ad Altare Dei and Mary, the First Disciple programs. She is proud to be the mother of an Eagle Scout and a Senior Girl Scout, who
have both been active members of their parish. Jill is passionate about offering youth opportunities to be strong, faith filled, and service oriented contributors to our community through Scout-
Biographies - Adult Award Recipients
Ruth Chavez Nielsen—St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award
Ruth Chavez Nielsen is a leader of 2nd Grade “Brownie” Girl Scout Brownie troop at St. John
Notre Dame School in Folsom. She has been involved with Girl Scouts for three years. She
credits her co-op troop moms with assisting their Brownie troop in participating service projects
benefiting Folsom Veteran’s Parade, Empire Ranch Alzheimer’s Special Care Center, Folsom
Adopt A Creek/Trail Program, Folsom Cordova School District Homeless Services, and Girls
Love Mail. Mrs. Nielsen’s three daughters attend St. John Notre Dame School. Her co-op
troop contributed to the spiritual guidance to lead 8 girls to earn their Family of God award this
past year.
Joy Magnino—St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award
Joy has had 26 years of service in the Inland Empire Council (So. Cal.) and 8 years in the
Golden Empire Council. She has had Den Leader and Pack Committee training., She has had
training for both BSA Explorer Post and Senior Girl Scout Troop 898. With both of theses
units she was an Assistant Advisor and then Advisor. She also supported Explorer Post 903
(No. Cal.) She served as an Assistant Winter Camp Master at Camp Helendade in the Arrowhead District. While in the Inland Empire Council she worked with Explorer Post 898. She
assisted one Scout to earn the Ad a Altare Dei and 21 Explorers to earn the Pope Pius XII
Award. Currently she has assisted as a staff member at 5 Ad Altare Dei Retreats, 2 Pope Pius
Retreats (One she hosted in her home for the three day event) and 2 Mary the First Disciple
Retreats. She has been active in the PTA, Little and Pony League Baseball as well as the
Knights of Columbus free throw contest along with the coloring and poster contest for youths.
Currently she is serving on the Sacramento Diocese Catholic Committee on Scouting. At St
John the Baptist in Folsom, she and her husband Bob are Eucharistic Ministers and are active in
the Mr & Mrs. Club, formerly serving as co-presidents. She has been and is a great source of
inspiration to the Catholic Committee in many supportive roles. Joy and her husband Bob have
eight sons, five who are Eagle Scouts.
Biographies - Adult Award Recipients
Diana Amador—St. Anne Award
Diana Amador has been a Girl Scout Troop Leader for 8 years at St. Mel School and is currently
assisting several of her 8th grade Girl Scouts in earning their Silver Award. For the past 7 years,
Diana has taken the lead at her parish to ensure all the girl scouts in the parish have an opportunity
to earn the religious award for their grade level. She has assisted girls in earning their Family of
God, I Live my Faith awards and Mary the First Disciple awards. Diana co-lead the Mary the First
Disciple retreat this past year as a joint retreat with Boy Scouts earning the Ad Altare Dei award.
Diana sees the importance of bringing the religious aspect into scouts. Many of the values in
Catholicism are the same values the Scouting program supports. She strives for the girls to make
the connection between the two.
Diana is very involved at both St. Mel and Jesuit High Schools. She coached volleyball for several
years at St. Mel and volunteered many hours at Jesuit for their Christmas Tree Lane which raises
money for scholarships. Diana is very active at St Mel parish and teamed with Jill Dutra to
organize Scout Sunday. Diana oversees the funds the Knights of Columbus donate to the Girl
Scouts at St. Mel. The funds are used to pay for the Religious awards program and the many
community service projects that the scouts are involved with. Both her sons are Eagle Scouts and
she assisted both sons in earning the Light of Christ and
Parvuli Dei awards. Because of her involvement with the Boy Scouts, she made a commitment to
incorporate religious awards into the Girl Scout program. Diana and her husband Fernando have
two sons and a daughter.
Theresa Rearick—St. Anne Award
Theresa has been active in the Scouting Program both for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts for the past
24 years. She was active as a Girl Scout Leader for 11 years. In Cub Scouting she has served as
the Committee Chair, Treasurer, Den Leader and Webelos Leader. Theresa started Cub Park 233
to have a Catholic Pack at St. Joseph and Good Shepherd Parishes in Elk Grove. During her leadership, Pack 233 had 8 recipients for the Light of Christ Award. She served as the Committee
Chair and Fundraising Chair for Troop 007 in Elk Grove. For 5 years, Theresa organized Troop
007’s largest fundraiser of the year, the Elk Grove Community Campout. She is a member of
the Sacramento Diocese Catholic Committee on Scouting, holding the positions of Secretary and
Youth Religious Awards Chair. She has helped as a patrol leader and staff at the Ad Altare Dei
and Mary, the First Disciple Retreats. She has attended Wood Badge training and received her
beads in January 2012. She is a Eucharistic Minister at St. John the Baptist in Folsom. Theresa
and her husband Keith have two sons and a daughter. Their youngest son is an Eagle Scout.

Gayle Manos – Bronze Pelican Award
Gayle has served both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts for many years and has worked at a
number of levels both as a leader and behind the scenes with Cub Packs, Boy and Girl Scout
Troops, District and Council. She has supported Girl Scouts for 8 years and an assistant Troop
Leader for her daughter. She has handled the rechartering duties for Pack 149, Troop 149 and
Divine Savior Troop 310. She has worked at the Golden Empire Council office during rechartering time handling the paper work required for all units in the council. In the Pioneer
Express District she received her Commissioner Training. She also has Venturing Advisor
Training and serves as such for Venturing Crew 155. In 2014 she served on the Troop 310s
Committee Challenge. She helped recruit 8 scouts from Troop 310 to earn their Pope Pius XII
Award. She has served on numerous Boards of Review and supports the Religious Awards for
Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She has Chaired the committee for Venture Crew 155.
At Divine Savior Parish she served 11 years as head of the Altar Servers ministry. She also
serves the Parish as a Lector and is a member of the Liturgy committee.
Gayle and her husband Bill have three children. Both sons have the Ad Altare Dei and the
Pope Pius XII Awards. Robert the eldest is an Eagle Scout, Marcus is currently a Life Scout.
Their daughter Samantha has the Girl Scout Gold Award, Mary the 1st Disciple Award and the
Pope Pius XII Award.
Camilo P. Pizarro – Bronze Pelican Award
Camilo has served Scouting in Good Shephard Parish for over 5 years. He started his service
with Pack 233 as an assistant Webelo Leader. During this time he promoted the Parvuli Dei
awards resulting in a number of Cubs earning the award. He has taken Adult Training in the
Golden Empire Council including; Adult Protective Training, Outdoor Activities Training. He
is serving as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 007. In this Troop he has promoted the Ad
Altare Dei program (Award) with several scouts earning the award.
He is a strong youth Program Leader in Good Shepherd parish. He promotes the Catholic faith
through the scouting program in the Good Shepherd Parish. He is a member of the Knight of
Columbus council #11236. He serves as Youth Activities Chairman and also as a chaperone
for the Comforting Project. He has been Knight of the Month twice. He handles the Council
soccer and free throw competition in the Parish and Council. He is an outstanding Leader and
has become the “Go-To” member of both the Parish and Council for Youth Activities. Camilo
and his wife Christina have a son and a daughter.

Father Sergio Perez, OSJ: - Bronze Pelican Award
Currently serving as the director of Marello Youth Retreat Center, Father Sergio possesses an
obvious zeal in working with youth. He began his involvement and support of the Catholic
Religious Award retreats in 2008 when he was a seminarian at Mt. St. Joseph. At that time he
participated in skits and talks, impressing young scouts with his enthusiasm and his spirited fun.
After his ordination, he served pastorally in the Central Valley before returning to Mt. St. Joseph
as the retreat center director. This opened the door for him to continue his involvement with the
religious award scout retreats. These retreats include Ad Altare Dei, Pope Pius XII and Mary, the
First Disciple retreats. He has positively influenced thousands of young lives due to his retreat
leadership, and specifically, nearly 100 scouts.
Fr. Sergio did not have scouting opportunities easily available to him as a youth. However, he
has merged his gifts of leadership with his love of Church and God to effectively share the
Gospel with young scouts and impart to them a personal commitment to spiritual growth and
knowledge within the context of their respective scouting experiences.
Fr. Sergio attended CSU Bakersfield where he was the founding member of his fraternity. He
furthered his education at St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo, CA where he received a Master of
Arts in Church History and a Master of Divinity.
Father Matthew Spencer, OSJ: - Bronze Pelican Award
As a young seminarian in 2008 at the onset of the Catholic Religious Award retreats at Marello
Youth Retreat Center, Fr. Matthew Spencer has offered time, energy and creativity as he participated in the programs fairly consistently over the years. Whether taking the lead and delivering
important spiritual talks and lessons, or bringing levity to the presentations with clever skits, Fr.
Matthew has always been warmly received by the scouts as evidenced by the notes of appreciation
prepared by scouts for the Oblates of St. Joseph at the conclusion of retreats. Fr. Matthew made a
difference to dozens of scouts pursuing their religious emblem awards, including Ad Altare Dei,
Pope Pius XII, and Mary, the First Disciple.
Father Matthew did not participate in scouts as a youth but credits his own father for passing on a
lot of knowledge and insights from his military experience. Additionally, Fr. Matthew grew up on
rural property on the outskirts of Madera which gives him a unique appreciation and love for the
outdoors, nature, and many of the skills and talents so important to the scouting journey.
Presently, Father Matthew serves as rector of Mount St. Joseph Seminary in Loomis and knows
first-hand of the importance of developing the spiritual well-being of young people. He is valued
for his relational and friendly style with young scouts, and for imparting a great sense of reverence
and encouragement as scouts learn about the sacraments and explore their faith.

Father Phil Massetti, OSJ: - Bronze Pelican Award
Father Phil holds a place in his heart for scouting due to his own involvement at a young age in
the Central Valley, and his hometown of Madera. Fr. Phil joined scouts when he was in the
6th grade and continued until he was in the 8th grade, having earned the Rank of 1st Class scout.
At that point, he committed to move to a minor seminary at a young age to begin discerning
about his ultimate vocation as a priest with the Oblates of Saint Joseph.
Since 2008, Fr. Massetti has provided on-going support for the development and support of the
Catholic Religious Award retreats conducted by the Catholic Committee on Scouting. These
retreats include Ad Altare Dei, Pope Pius XII and Mary, the First Disciple, and have long-been
held at the Marello Youth Retreat Center. Father Phil was the retreat center director at the time,
and welcomed the opportunity to foster the retreat, and participate wholly. He served as the primary retreat leader in 2008, and subsequently participated in several since then. Fr. Phil now
serves as pastor of St. Joseph Marello Catholic Church in Granite Bay.
Fr. Phil’s commitment to scouts through these retreat opportunities included developing and
giving retreat talks in support of the texts, engagement and personable interaction with the
youth at the retreats, and a sincere devotion to emphasize the spiritual development of young
scouts. By his own example, creative learning and story-telling, and a personal interest in
creating faith-filled experiences, Fr. Phil guided the spiritual growth of scores of scouts.
Beyond Father Phil’s commitment to the retreat experience, he has been committed to helping
and supporting young scouts in the Granite Bay and Loomis area. Many have pursued their
Eagle rank via local troops and he supported and encouraged many of their projects.

Lynette Magnino - Bronze Pelican Award
Lynette has been supporting and active in Scouting for many years. Her service has been at
various levels including but not limited to assistant Den Leader for Good Shepherd Pack 233,
member of the Soaring Eagles District Eagle Board of Review. She has assisted the Catholic
Committee on Scouting with the development of Marello Youth Retreat Center as the location
for the annual Scout Religious Retreat. She kept the website up to date, coordinated all the
scheduling needs for the Retreat Center operation, including priests and seminarians for the
weekend event. In her earlier years with Scouting she supported the religions emblems program
by assisting Cub Scouts in earning the Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei Awards. Additionally
she supported Boy Scouts with the Ad Altare Dei and the Pope Pius XII Awards. She assisted
several Scouts with their Eagle Projects at Marello Youth Retreat Center. At this time she has
several ideas that would serve as future Eagle projects. She supported her son Dalton in earning
all four (4) Catholic religious awards, for Cub Scouts (2) and Boy Scouts (2) and his Eagle
Rank.
She has taught confirmation classes at Good Shepherd Parish for 8 years. She has been the
Operation Manager for Marello Youth Retreat Center for a number of years. Lynette has written numerous articles for the Catholic Herald , Sacramento Diocese’s Catholic magazine. She
has planned, organized and ran a number of charity fundraisers for St. Joseph Marello Youth
Retreat Center and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School with great success. She is also active in support of Bishop Soto and the Sacramento Diocese. She may not be seen in the forefront of the
activities , but she is always working behind the scenes. Lynette and her husband Dave have
three sons and a daughter.
Jan Schaper –Bronze Pelican Award
Jan Schaper has been an active volunteer serving her community for over 13 years. She has
been a Den Leader in Folsom Pack 94 for the past 5 years, shepherding 7 boys from Tiger Scout
through Sr. Webelos. Jan is also serving as Awards Coordinator, organizes the military ship
overnighter each year and reinvigorated a focus to the Religious Emblem program with the
pack. Over the past 3 years, Jan has successfully mentored more than 10 scouts through the
Parvuli Dei program. In addition to Cub Scouts, Jan has volunteered with the Girl Scout Troop
3908 for 7 years, by coordinating fund raising and in the troop Treasurer. Jan’s other volunteer
positions have included 4 years as financial advisor on the Advisory Committee of the St. John
Notre Dame School, member of the Finance Committee of the St. John the Baptist Catholic
Church Parish for 3 years, Treasurer on the Board of Directors for the Northern California
Children’s Chorus for 2 years, and past board member for the Junior League of Sacramento
where she has been a member for 14 years.

Robert (Bob) Mayer – Bronze Pelican Award
Bob is an Eagle Scout that has continued to support Scouting, his church and community at
large. He is known for his Eagle Scout presentation ceremonies that he produces tailored to
each Scout. He has served as an Assistant Den Leader, Webelo Den Leader and Assistant
Scoutmaster and Committee Chair. His service continues as a Unit and Roundtable Commissioner (7 years), Merit Badge Counselor (11 years). He serves on the District Committee, Klondike Committee and chaired it for three years. He chaired Scouting Bonanza (Merit Badge
Fair) , and a member of the District E-Waste committee At Council level he chaired the
Friends of Scouting in 2014. He is a member of the G.E.C. Board serving as Publicity Chair
and now V.P. of membership for the Golden Empire Council. He has taken Philmont and High
Adventure Treks with his Scouts, along with Council Summer Camps, Council Jamborama, and
District Camporees. He has chaired the Pony Express Recognition Dinner four times, and supported Scouting for Food Programs in the District. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow.
He has completed B.S.A., Leader training earning his Scoutmasters Key, also completing Wood
Badge Training. He was awarded the District Award of Merit in 2008. He received the St.
George Award in 1999 for his work in promoting Catholic Scouting and the various religious
awards During his 20+ years of service he has assisted 53 Scouts in earning their Eagle Rank.
He is a member of the Catholic Committee on Scouting for the Diocese of Sacramento.
His skills reach far and wide. He co-chaired and chaired Sacramento’s Lutheran High School’s
auction for 3 years (2001-2004) which is the main support for the school. Bob included both the
adults and students in the effort for the first time. The events were marked as a great success.
The Dante Men’s Club of Sacramento also had Bob’s
support for fundraising golf tournaments for 4 years. The funds that were raised were used for
scholarships.
As a member of St. Mel’s Parish, Bob is on the Parish Council and helped develop it into a
working unit supporting the Parish and Youth. He is serving as its chair at this time. He’s a
member of the Catholic Committee on Scouting and has worked on the second Breakfast with
the Bishop for Scouters and Parish leaders. The Breakfast was held on Feb. 20th at St. Mel’s in
Fair Oaks. Bob is also a member of the Knights of Columbus #6066. Bob and his wife, Pattie
have two children, a son and a daughter.

Jon Kantola – Bronze Pelican Award
Jon is an Eagle Scout with a long history of service to scouting at a number of different levels.
He has served in the California Inland Empire Council (C.I.E.C.) in Southern California and
also in the Golden Empire Council in Northern California. He was an Assistant Scoutmaster for
Troop 2 in Riverside, CA in 1985. He supported St. Thomas the Apostle Scout Troop 116 in
Riverside, CA from 2001 to 2008. Also while in the C.I.E.C. he served as the District Chair for
the Mr. Rubidoux District for 3 years. He was a member of the Council Board for the Technology Task Force (4 Yr.) and the District Training Chair in Mr. Rubidoux District, District
Advancement Chair for the Iron Horse District. Jon has extensive training in the various levels
of scouting which includes some 41 courses. He completed Wood Badge training and earned
his beads. Entering the Golden Empire Council he has been serving as Scoutmaster for St.
Joseph Marello Troop 115 in Granite Bay. He was the primary driving force in establishing
the Catholic Boy Scout unit in his Parish. He is an active member of the Catholic Committee
on Scouting for the Sacramento Diocese. He co-chaired the Scouting Religious Retreat at
Marello Youth Center in 2015 which included Boy Scouts earning the Ad Altare Dei award
and Girl Scouts earning the Mary the First Disciple Award. Additionally he mentored his son
while he earned both religious awards for Cub Scouts, the Light of Christ and the Parvuli Dei.
He served for 7 years as the lead Catechist for Confirmation at St. Thomas the Apostle in Riverside, CA. He served on the Parish Council for 3 years and was instrumental in reworking the
Parish Council model to include representation of all the various ministries. He was a
Confirmation Retreat member for 4 years and Retreat Chair for 3 years at St. Thomas the
Apostle Parish. He has been a lector for over 15 years as well as an usher. He has been a
member of the Knights of Columbus for the past 17 years serving as Recorder for 3 years.
He and his wife, Ann have two daughters and a son.

Monica Ann Kantola – Bronze Pelican Award
Ann serves on both the professional and volunteer sides of scouting. Her service includes both
the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America. Living in Southern California with her husband Jon
and children, she served over 10 years as a Girl Scout Troop Leader in the San Gorgonio
Council, 3 years as the Council Training Team Leader, additionally 2 years on the Council Product Sales Task Force. In 2012 she was awarded the Council National Honor Pin. She also
served as an Associate Advisor to a Venture Crew. Her services include serving as Treasurer
for St. Joseph Marello Parish Troop 115. As a Professional Scouter she continues as Marketing
and Communication Director. She is also Staff Advisor to the Catholic Committee on Scouting.
Previously she was the District Executive for the Pony Express District. As with many scouters
she wears many hats. She is a member of the Catholic Committee on Scouting for the Sacramento Diocese. She is an advocate for the C.C.S. with prominence marketing the Golden
Empire Council, (GEC) media. She represented the GEC and the C.C.S. during the 2015
Sacramento Diocese Ministry Day Event. In 2015 she served on the Ad Altare Dei Retreat
Staff. She was a mentor for her son through work to earn his Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei
Awards. She has and is serving as a Eucharistic Minister for over 18 years in various locations.
She has a long history of service which also included being on the Confirmation Retreat Staff
for two years. Ann and her husband Jon have two daughters and a son.

History of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament
Finished in 1889, the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament cost
$250,000 to construct. Renovations in 2005 cost $34.5 million.
Planned and built under the guidance of Bishop Patrick Manogue,
the style is similar to that of a neo-Renaissance church in Paris which
Bishop Manogue admired - the Church of the Holy Trinity. The
central tower (217 feet high) has an 5000 pound bell and three
smaller bells, the big one donated by Bishop Manogue himself
before he died. The bells tolled for the first time in 1895 during Bishop Manogue’s funeral. The use of the bells has been stopped
because of structural issues. Seven crosses on the roof and towers
range from six to eight feet tall. There is much symbolism within the
cathedral. The Baptismal Font has eight sides. God made the Earth in
six days, rested in the seventh and early Church Fathers saw the
Resurrection on the eighth day. The Chapel of the Martyrs shows the
risen Christ surrounded by martyrs-people who were killed as a result
of their faith. Four massive pillars remind us of the four Gospels. The
altar is white marble, mined in China. The dark marble is from Spain.
Sealed in the back of the altar is a relic of Saint Toribio Romo,
martyred in Mexico during the persecution of the Church in Mexico
in the 1920s and 1930s. There is much more to learn about the
cathedral. Take time to read and study its history and its many
beautiful works of art.
