It’s STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL TIME!!
All the folks at St. Paul’s Protestant Church have been
busy collecting for the awesome WHITE ELEPHANT
and the classy SILENT AUCTION and the yummy
STRAWBERRY PIES & SHORTCAKES! The day is
always lovely with familiar faces, a gorgeous quilt,
homemade fudge and Indian crafts. Pile the gang in the
car and head on over (208 Orchid). Plan to enjoy a
lovely lunch as you shop all the old and new treasures.
This is an important annual fundraiser for St. Paul and
they appreciate your support.
THIS SATURDAY, JULY 12, 10 - 3pm

I decided to feature a
different ISLAND BUSINESS
each week.
This week's special business
feature is
1784 North Channel Dr. Harsen’s Island, MI 48028
Summer Hours 8 AM to 4:30 PM Daily
BuildTech Inc.
John and Patty Wonsowicz incorporated
BuildTech in 1985. This fully licensed, fully insured,
family owned/operated business offers a wide range of
design and construction services. Over the past 25 years,
they have worked hard to meet the changing needs of
their customers. For example, they've received many
requests from people who want to make their home more
energy efficient. With the 2009 Energy Efficiency tax
credit and unpredictable fuel costs, this has proven to be a
wise investment. Given the fact that many couples chose
to retire on the island, BuildTech has years of experience
in designing homes that offer more sustainable spaces.
This team of talented, versatile professionals have also
helped countless customers with affordable home
improvement projects that aim to make their homes more
marketable or just more enjoyable.
BuildTech can handle any type of project from
large to small; exterior/interior remodeling, additions,
decks, garages, kitchens, baths, ADA accessible, extreme
home makeovers, etc. You can choose to utilize their
design services combined with construction services or
their conceptual/interior design services. They have
discovered that, with the weak economy, more and more
customers are choosing to handle smaller portions of the
project by themselves and contracting out the larger
initial portion of the project.
BuildTech uses an Auto CAD design program to
create conceptual designs to give the customer what they
want. Once the conceptual drawing phase is complete,
they create working CAD prints. However, they are not
limited to CAD, they can also use another program which
gives customers a 3-D experience if they wish. They
work on laying out your dreams and helping you break
up your overall project into steps you
can complete as time and money allows.
On a personal note, we've hired BuildTech when
we needed help and I was impressed with their punctuality, quality workmanship and customer satisfaction
guarantee. I also applaud the fact that they hire only
local employees, many life long island residents. For
more info, visit their website www.buildtechonline.com

to seek alternative means of transportation to the island,
has cancelled it's semi-annual July mtg. John Fannon
recently spoke with representatives from the International Bridge Company and they stated "We fully intend to
put the bridge in, however, due to current economic
conditions, the bridge to Harsens Island is on hold."
There "may be" a meeting on the 3rd Tuesday in January
(2010) if there are any new developments to report.

At St. Paul Church. Kids from 3 on up LOVE this special
week of creative songs, skits, crafts and snacks. Teens and
adults from all three island churches pitch in to make it
all happen. The main source of funding, in previous years,
is not available. If you would like to help defray the cost,
you can drop off a donation (marked VBS) in the FLYER
Ad box at Sans Souci Market. This years theme is
Crocodile Dock. VBS is a quality program that has
blessed hundreds of young people over the years. (For

Can Anyone Identify
the Ship???
Due to numerous complaints of speeding from island
residents you may have noticed increased police
patrols on the island. Please obey posted speed limits
On the night of Monday, June 22 - or the early morning of and be courteous to walkers and bicyclists.
Tuesday, June 23 - an upbound ship created a wake that
took down 32 feet of my dock. The Coast Guard has been
able to identify 7 ships that passed during that time, but
we have not been able to narrow it down to THE ONE
ship that caused the damage. If you know anything about
the identity of the ship that created this little tsunami,
please contact me at #248-255-7430 or 248-652-4796. I
have no recourse for holding a ship liable for damages
until I know which ship was the offender. Please contact
me if you have my information. Thank You.

Happy 50th Anniversary
Don & Jean Verslype
June 27, 1959 - 2009
It all began on the island, back in 1957. Jean, a resident of
Algonac, and her fellow classmate, MaryLou Barr, met a
group of guys at the ferry, including one young man from
Grosse Pointe whose parents had a cottage on the S.
Channel. The group of teens spent the day going from
Kulo's (present day S.Channel Boat Club) to Brown's. "We
started dating and never quit. We're best friends. We like
the same things, especially the island!" Two years after they
met, Don & Jean celebrated a simple, low budget ($500)
wedding at the Congregational Church in New Baltimore.
Jean remembers all the curl draining out of her hair, amidst
the 92 degree temperatures, and her wedding gown was
covered with fish flies!! They drove to Caseville for their
wedding night, and quickly returned home so they could get
back to work at their Chrysler plants on Monday! Over the
years, they have lived in Detroit, Birmingham and Clinton
Township, working and raising their two children (James &
Laurie). But summertime always included making
memories on the island. First, staying at Don's parents place
on S. Channel, and later, they bought their own cottage
down in the flats. Now that the 3 grandkids are here, that
makes 4 generations of Verslypes having fun on Harsens
Island.
The couple celebrated their 50th with a lovely dinner party at
the IHYC, surrounded by dozens of their island friends they
have known throughout their life together. They were
thrilled with the exquisite table decorations artistically
fashioned by Arlene "Flower Lady" Earl. Everyone raved
about the food (prepared by Chef Bonnie Storm) and
"Reverend" Dick Earl officiated the memorable "renewal of
their vows." Needless to say, a good time was had by all!
