General Americana
Lot#295- 1907 Touring Cadillac, Model G
Lot# 295 1907 Touring Cadillac, Model G
Factory Custom, Fully Restored
This classic car is typical of the touring cars
that irst visited Nevada mining camps. It has been fully
restored by Vintage Car Stuff, a veteran of the Pebble
Beach antique auto show circuit. It has only been driven
rarely, twice in 2009, then placed in careful storage.
The car belonged to Gordon Harris, of a prominent
Reno banking family. Purchased in 1954, Harris
considered the car the prize of his collection. Harris’s
fondness for antique autos lead to the formation of the
Horseless Carriage Club of Nevada.
According to General Motors in a letter to Harris
in 1955, 497 1907 Model G cars were built (all varieties
combined). Only three were reported as “4 passenger
Runabout”, and this may be the sole surviving example.
The vehicle has its original 20 horsepower, 4 cylinder
engine with polished copper cylinder jackets and the
original brass patent plates. It has custom folding rear
bucket seats with a storage well underneath.
The car was the center of a squabble among two
close friends, Harris and casino magnate Bill Harrah.
While Harrah’s collection was far superior to Harris’,
Harrah did not have one of these cars in his world-famous
collection, now called the “National Automobile Museum”
in Reno. Harris wouldn’t sell, taking great pride in owning
something Harrah couldn’t own.
Restoration began in the 1950’s and was
completed in the 1960’s, with secondary restoration
over the past decade. Recently, the car was
44
featured in Vintage Ford’s Centennial Vehicles section for
its 100th anniversary in 2007.
This car is the quintessential collectible for
anyone who is an antique car collector, Nevada collector
or Western collector. It is exactly the type of car that
was driven to the early post-1900 mining camps, so well
documented by historical photos. One collector today told
us these cars were made to last, and should be driven
today.
The Setting
1907 proved a pivotal point in auto construction.
As the automobile became more popular, demand went
up. That led to increased manufacturers and increased
production of cars. A secondary effect was also coming
into play - auto racing. These two key attributes led to
improvements in engine manufacture and performance.
Before 1907, small engines had generally
ruled the day. A four cylinder, 20 horse power vehicle,
typical of the larger 1907 cars, was the norm. But many
manufacturers were beginning to get less creative
artistically, instead focusing on function and cost. The
Cadillac retained the incredibly fancy and artistic brass
work, inclusive of the snake-like horns and multi-colored
lanterns. Ford went simple, redesigning their cars without
the fancy accoutrements.
Ford and others built 40 horse power, 6 cylinder
engines. Some of these were for the racers and the
“muscle cars” of yesteryear. The Thomas Flyer, made
famous by the race around the world in 1908, had to
revert to their 4 cylinder, 20 horse engine because the 6
cylinder car couldn’t climb hills well.

Utica Mine Find
The word “archive” is often thrown around to describe items for
sale. But this true archive contains thousands and thousands of billheads, assay receipts, advertising envelopes, letters, business cards,
river shipping receipts, whiskey and cigar related ephemera, etc. It is
the complete record of the Utica Mine and nearby mines and towns
associated with the Utica Mine.
You will find names like Frank Mitchler, George Stickle, and Charles
Lane, places like Knights Ferry and Sheepranch, assays done by the
Utica Mill, assay receipts and bills for rolled silver from Selby, hundreds of records hauling ore and lumber to the Utica Mill, and many
more.
Learn about the Angels Dam breaking, the use of Union Water Works
ditches to fight fires, the two fatal Utica Mine accidents and the 22
deaths associated with it, which companies in Stockton, Sacramento,
and San Francisco were frequented and what was purchased.
Small towns and places can be found throughout the archive: Soulsbyville, Robinson Ferry, Bear Valley Station, Ranch Flat, Monarch
Ville, French Canon, Valley Springs, Bunds Ranch, and Valley Springs.
Find references to forgotten mines and leases named new Discovery,
Essex, Juneau, Egan, Union Copper, Ilex, Oriole, New Brunswick, Dolling and many more. Spend hours in 1918 and 1919 as the West Point
mines are mapped and described and the business of the mine is laid
out. The owner is attempting to market the mine for sale.
Most of these documents are mining related! There are many stories
ready to be uncovered and told from this archive!

John Manuel
billheads. At least
13 varieties. John
Manuel, who for a
number of years
was one of the
most prominent
businessmen
of Murphys, was born in England in 1836, and died at his home
in California November 19, 1898. The intervening period of sixtytwo years covered a life record that was at all times honorable and
upright and worthy the high regard of those who knew Mr. Manuel.
He was sixteen years of age when he left the land of his birth and
immigrated to the new world. He spent the three succeeding years
in New York and thence came to California, arriving in this state in
1855. He was a young man of nineteen years, full of energy, courage,
ambition and determination. He engaged in mining at Douglas Flat
and Central Hill, and was the owner of a large hydraulic mine at the
former place, operating it most successfully and taking out a large
amount of the precious metal. In 1877, he abandoned mining and
turned his attention to lumbering, purchasing a saw-mill eight miles
above Murphys. His business grew in volume and importance and he
increased the capacity of the mill to twenty thousand feet of lumber
as the daily output. In 1878, he established a lumber yard at Murphys
where he had a large local demand, supplying the miners throughout
this locality and for a considerable distance through the surrounding
country. He conducted a profitable and constantly growing business,
winning that prosperity which is ever the reward of carefully directed
effort. [Calveras County Biographies] Est. $500 - 1500 FHWAC # 11266

business card in excellent condition
Business card for the Mitchler Hotel,
first class accommodations. Highlights
the cigars sold: Reina Victoria, Bolt
Clymer, and Sanchez y Hayas Havana
cigars. Very nice condition. The
Murphys Hotel in Murphys, California
is one of the oldest hotels still
operating in California. First called the Sperry and Perry Hotel, it was
opened by James L. Sperry and John Perry on August 20, 1856.[1] The
town of Murphys was a popular stopping point along the stagecoach
route from Milton to the Calaveras Big Trees. Thought to be fireproof
due to its stone construction and iron shutters, the hotel was damaged
in the fire of 1859 that destroyed most of the downtown area.
However, it was quickly restored and reopened by spring of 1860. The
new Sperry and Perry Hotel was considered one of the finest hotels
outside of San Francisco, and was host to many famous people over
the years. Copies of the original register show such signatures as Mark
Twain, John Jacob Astor, Ulysses S. Grant, John Bidwell, Charles Bolles
(alias Black Bart), Henry Ward Beecher, Horatio Alger, J.P. Morgan and
Thomas Lipton. Renamed the Mitchler Hotel in 1882, and the Murphys
Hotel in 1945. Est. $200 - 400 FHWAC # 11192

Bill needed a new backer and joined
forces with Pawnee Bill. The 1909
schedule (online) lists these cities

Cody, “Buffalo Bill,”
Personal Letter, Battle
of Summit Springs,
1915 An amazing piece
of Western history
from one of the West’s
most iconic figures,
“Buffalo Bill.” This letter,
written by Cody, comes
on Wild West/ circus
letterhead. Top left:
“The Biggest Circus in
the World/ The SellsFloto Shows Company
Inc./ General Offices &
Winter Quarters/ 236.7
Symes Bldg., Denver,
Colorado.” Vignette of
an elephant with mouth
open and trunk raised.
Center top in red: “Two Big Institutions Joined Together At One Price
Of Admission.” Top right: “Buffalo Bill’s Original Wild West/ Col. W.
F. Cody/ “Buffalo Bill’ Salutes From the Saddle.” Vignette of buffalo
with Cody’s portrait on its flank. Red type: “Col. W. F. Cody.” Letter is
addressed from Perry, Okla. and dated Sep. 23rd, 1915. Text of letter:
“My Dear Grinnell (?), Glad to hear from you. I am still as active as
I was in 69. It might take me a wee bit longer on some things huh?
Summit Springs Lies in Eastern Colorado. ... The Indians didn’t think
any white men knew where they were. Yours very truly W. F. Cody.”
Cody fought in the 1869 Battle of Summit Springs, a conflict between
the U.S. Army (led by Colonel Eugene A. Carr) and the Cheyenne Dog
Soldiers (led by Chief Tall Bull). The army was retaliating for raids
in Kansas by the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers. Two-hundred forty-four
soldiers plus 50 Pawnee scouts overwhelmed the Cheyenne forces,
with 35-50 killed. The army only suffered one casualty. Cody was only
a scout at the time. He shot and killed a Cheyenne who had escaped
the conflict on Tall Bull’s horse, leading Cody to believe that he had
killed Tall Bull. Others claim the chief was killed by Major Frank
North. The letter appears to be addressed to Grinnell, who is probably
George Bird Grinnell (1849-1938), a famous American anthropologist,
naturalist, historian, and writer. Grinnell is recognized for his study of
Native Americans and his conservation efforts, especially as it relates
to buffalo. He also started the first Audubon Society. Cody died in
1917. Condition: Letter has toning, fold marks, and small tears along
the edges. The text is easy to read and Cody’s signature is prominent.
A fantastic piece that belongs in a museum! Est. $2000 - 4000 FHWAC

estate is the ultimate firearm for the Western collector: the Henry
repeating rifle. Model 1860. Patent date: Oct. 16, 1860. Manufacturer:
New Haven Arms Co. Serial Number: 10749. Brass frame with slightlyweathered walnut butt stock. Grade: NRA good to very good. Brief
Henry History Invented in the 1850s by Benjamin Tyler Henry, and
patented in 1860, this weapon not only played an important role in
the Civil War, but also in the settling of the American frontier. Sioux
and Cheyenne used these firearms so successfully against Custer at
Little Big Horn that archaeologists later named a hill Henryville for
all the Henry cartridges recovered. Used by soldiers, ranchers, and
Native Americans, the Henry rifle was feared and respected for its
accuracy (.44 caliber rimfire metallic cartridges) and its power (45
rounds per minute). The Henry “gave a single man the firepower of a
dozen marksmen armed with muzzle-loading muskets.” A Confederate
soldier on the opposite end of Henry-armed Union soldiers famously
concluded “it’s a rifle that you could load on Sunday and shoot all week
long.” The rifles were manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company,
the predecessor to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Henry
was hired by Winchester in the 1850s and helped with production of
the Volcanic repeating rifle. While working on that, he developed the
Henry. Between 1860 and 1866, around 14,000 were produced. The
rifle was particularly popular in the border states of Kentucky, Illinois,
Missouri, and Indiana. [Bresnan, 2013] Est. $17,500 - 25,000 FHWAC

from captivity by Indians. The photograph shows Olive with the blue tattoos that she was given
during her captivity. Photography by Powelson of Rochester, New York. 2 1/2” x 4”. Olive Ann Oatman
was born in Illinois in September of either c1838. When Olive was 14 years old, her parents, Royce
and Mary Ann Oatman, decided to join a wagon train in Independence, Missouri headed west for
California. For unknown reasons, the train split up several times and eventually the Oatmans were left
to travel alone through dangerous territory. Regardless of the reason for their isolation, the Oatmans
were alone and traveling through the Gila River Valley when their wagon was attacked by Yavapai,
possibly Tolkepayas. Olive and her sister, Mary Ann, who was seven-years-old, watched in horror
as every member of their family was beaten and killed. Olive and her sister served as slaves of the
Tolkepayas for a year, then they were sold to a Mojave chief for blankets, vegetables and horses. They
followed their captors on foot for ten days to their encampment further north on the Colorado River
near what is now Needles, California. The girls had no idea what to expect from their new captors, but
discovered they were treated better, received few beatings, and were allowed to grow their own food.
Their chins were marked with blue cactus tattoos. Some sources say this was a mark of their status as
slaves. However, according to historians, most Mojave women at that time had tattoos on their chins.
Olive Oatman became a celebrity in her day, writing books and giving lectures on her captivity. (See
accompanying books) Est. 500 - 1500 FHWAC # 11395

Arizona
Sylvester Mowry
Arizona & Sonora. 1863 and 1864
Sylvester Mowry’s work on Arizona and Sonora was a landmark work. It is the
irst such published work introducing America to the mining regions of Arizona.
There were three major editions, 1859, 1863 and 1864, with many to follow, all
reprints of the 1864 edition. Mowry changed the content of the book all the way
through the 1864 edition. Howes lists the irst three editions.
Mowry (1830-1871) was a West Point graduate, 1852. He served with the
military, landing at Ft. Yuma in 1857, and departing service in 1858, when he
began prospecting, among other things. While in Tubac and Tucson in 1859,
Mowry got into a duel with Arizona Weekly editor Ed Cross, who didn’t like
Tucson or Mowry and his mining operations. The two apologized before shots
landed in their bodies. Cross was killed at Gettysburg in 1863. Mowry bought the
Patagonia silver mine about 1860, and the mining cap that arose bore his name,
only to be wiped out by Apaches in 1863. When the California Column, headed
by Carleton came through to eradicate the Arizona Confederates, Carleton had
Mowry arrested for selling lead from his mines to the Confederates, even though
he was a staunch Republican and unionist. He was vindicated and released. Much
of Mowry was written by J. Ross Browne in Harper’s in 1864, and his subsequent
work, Adventures in Apache Country, another mandatory read.
Lot # 475 AZ Arizona and Sonora, Mowry, 1864 Edition. 251pp.
Harper Bros., New York. 5.25 x 7.75”. Brown boards, gilt lettered spine,
fading. Separation beginning of spine cover. Two bookplates inside
front cover. James Wickersham on an Alaska related bookplate, and
Justin G. Turner on a political bookplate. Wickersham was a District
Judge for Alaska appointed by McKinley, later Congressman from
Alaska 1908-1917 and later 1930. Made first attempt to climb Denali,
aborted, 1903. Turner was cofounder of the Manuscript society,
and author. This volume is another stand-alone work, completely
different from the others. It is entirely reformatted. It contains much
new information on the mines, with thorough descriptions, assays
and discussion of the works. From pp232-348 is an original essay by
J. Ross Browne provided to Mowry before publication in Harper’s. It
is followed by several pages taken from Ward’s Mexico about mining
history there. As a stand-alone reference, this is another indispensible
work on Arizona. Est. $400 - 800 FHWAC # 19309
Lot # 474 AZ Arizona and Sonora, Mowry, The 1863 volume.
124pp. Typical 6 x 9”, brown boards, gilt lettering, professionally
rebacked with replaced fly pages. A. Roman & Co., San Francisco and
New York. Contains the short errata page tipped in at title page. This
edition is apparently the “second edition”. The cover page states “A
New Edition, with an appendix”. The first was apparently published
Feb. 3, 1859, though I have never seen one of these, and consider
them exceptionally rare (fh). The 1863 edition is very rare, while of
the three, the 1864 edition is the most commonly seen. The 1863
work is unarguably the best first-hand description of early Arizona.
He discusses the various mining companies there since 1855 (Sonora
Exploring and Mining) and others, especially around Tubac, inclusive
of “the great Heitzelman mine.” The 1863 edition differs from the
original 1859 edition substantially, and is a stand-alone reference.
There are tow appendices, the first a discussion of the Pacific Railroad
bill. The second, a nine page discussion of Arizona 1859-1863,
followed by the all-important, 63 page tome “The Mines of Arizona”
(and northern Mexico) “written February, 1861”. That, in turn is
followed by various correspondence that backs up Mowry. This is the
most important work of the period for Arizona mining history. Est.

black ink stains at top of front cover. Hodge traveled through Arizona
1874-1876, a period of early development, and before the major
discoveries of Tombstone and others. It has an absolutely excellent
history of the mines up to this point, and is essentially the book
necessary to partially fill the gap between Hamilton and Mowry. A year

An Original Wood Block
Lot # 496 CA , Coloma Sutter’s Mill Woodblock, CA Gold Rush
Artifact The Ultimate Gold Rush Artifact The sole original piece
of Sutter’s Mill in private hands. Woodblock measures 11x11x5¾’’
The Excavation In 1924, Philip K. Bekeart was part of an excavation
with his father to find the ruins of Sutter’s Mill. The excavation was
financed by the Society of California Pioneers. Philip B. Bekeart, was
born in Coloma in 1861, son of Jules Francois Bekeart, who arrived
in Coloma in 1849 and established a business selling firearms. In
1868, the Bekeart family sold the Coloma business and relocated
to San Francisco. Included is a typed document from Philip Kendall
Bekeart that describes the writing on the block and some of the
story behind its excavation. Written on the block in black crayon by
Philip B. Bekeart: “This block sawed off log from old Sutter’s Mill
by Phil. B. Bekeart and his son, Phil. K. Dekeart. Half of this log is
at the Marshall Monument at Coloma-the balance at the Society of
California Pioneers. Recovered by Phil. B. Bekeart Aug. & Sept., 1924.”
Philip K. mentions that his father “was always mindful of the lost site
of Sutter’s Mill” and that “he questioned the old timers of Coloma as
to their knowledge of the location of the mill.” In summer of 1924,
Philip B. received news that pieces of wood had been spotted sticking
out of a dry river bed. Father and son drove to Coloma and the
excavation began. The bottom of the block has an American Railway
Express Co. baggage tag made out to Bekeart in S.F. dated Sep. 26,
1924. Also included are three photographs. The first shows a group of
Coloma, California....
Where gold was first discovered!
men, including Philip B., standing with a large saw in front of a store.
The back of the photo has a description written by Henry Lahiff, C.E.
Lahiff mentions that they found this saw during the excavation, in the
“sawdust on the bedrock.” The excavation was “about ten feet in depth
through river gravel and boulders.” The second photograph is a view
of the American River, with a pen mark and writing from Dekeart that
pinpoints the exact spot. The third photograph shows two flagpoles
and has writing from Dekeart noting that these flags were erected by
the State to mark where they thought the mill was, and they “were
not far off … as I proved…” The document and photographs establish
excellent provenance for the piece. The gold discovery on January 24,
1848 at Sutter’s Mill was the iconic moment that started the California
Gold Rush. Est. $5,000 - 20,000 FHWAC # 19275

Diamond Springs
Lot # 497 CA , Diamond Springs Diamond Springs Gold Rush
Collection: photograph of town, mining letter, etc. c1853 c1853
William Pitt seemed normal and sane. He was born William II in
Grafton Vermont in 1827. His family moved to Pierrepont, New York
when he was young. There he quite sensibly took up farming. In the
1870 census, one can see that he was actually quite successful. His
farm was valued more than almost any other farm in the area. He
married Sally Morrill. Her brother fought and settled down in the
vicinity of his sister and brother-in-law. Just what you would expect
out of a fine New England family. Sensible and sane.
There is nothing you can find on the internet to show that William was
anything but sensible. But, this lot will give history a new perspective
on William’s life. Actually it paints a common picture of sane and
sensible young men in the 1850’s. Gold was discovered in 1848 and
more than one man left family and home to make his fortune in the
California Gold Fields.
This lot contains 11 items:
1) A daguerreotype sixth plate size of William Pitt. Our protagonist.
Sane and Sensible or Wildly Adventurous - you decide!
2) A letter. The first remarkable thing about this is the paper. It was
made by Negbaur & Company of Sacramento City, San Francisco,
and Stockton. Negbaur was a stationary and bookseller shop. This
item was targeted directly toward young men in the gold fields who
needed to write home. Thanks to the large writing space, the letter
encouraged young men to share their experiences in detail with loved
ones. William Pitt did just that. Without repeating the entire letter
here are some passages:
“I am now at Diamond Springs to work in the mines forty-five miles
from Sacramento.”
“I have been here almost two weeks. I have found some gold.”
“...there has been no water to wash with.”
“I am seting[sic] here in my log cabin...”
“’gambling house close by here. I have ben [sic] in there and see
men loose the last cent they had...”
“I have got a little gold dust and will send you a piece. Something to
remember me by till I come home.”
There are many more excerpts that show William’s life in Callafornia
[sic]. The blank pages were used to keep track of the letters that
were received by his future wife and the letter she sent him. From
these dates we can determine that William arrived sometime before
November 1851 and made it back home sometime after 1856.
3) Ambrotype half plate size: The Cabin: William is one of the miners
72
in this picture and this is the cabin he mentions in his letter. This cabin
would be located near his mine in Diamond Springs. This photo is not
in the best condition as it is badly crazed and flaking.
4) Ambrotype half plate size: Diamond Springs Settlement in the mid1850’s.The miners letter on miner’s stationary is special, but this is
the most important piece in this lot! Fill in history Say what note says!
A period note attached to the picture says that the large building is the
gambling hall that is mentioned in his letter. The cabin with the men
standing in front of it is Pitt’s log cabin (right hand side).
5) Daguruerreotype plate size: Sally Morrill Pitt. William’s wife. It
was she that the letter is supposedly written to and it is she who
county the letters sent and received until she could see her William
again. The photograph seems to have been taken before William left
for California. One can only imagine that he took one of both of these
photographs of Sally with him to the Gold Fields to remind himself of
his love.
6) Ambrotype ninth plate size: Sally Morrill Pitt once again. Sally was
born in Chittenden, Vermont in 1830 and passed away in Pierrepont,
New York in 1876.
7) Ambrotype quarter plate size: Charles Morrill. Charles fought in
the Civil War. He enlisted as a private in the 50th New York Infantry in
1861 and was mustered out as a First Lieutenant in 1865. Charles is
on the ????
8) Ambrotype ninth size plate: Charles Morrill. Charles was born in
Pierrepont in 1838 and pass away in 1921 in Louisiana. Charles would
come back from the war and settle down to a life of farming. He would
build and run the first creamery in St. Lawrence County in 1878.
9) Ambrotype ninth size plate: William Pitt Sr. He was born in England
in 1792. In 1812 he could be found in the United States – fighting for
the British in the War of 1812. During the War he deserted and settled
in Vermont. He moved to New York around 1820. He would pass away
in Canton, St. Lawrence County, New York in 1873.
10) Ambrotype ninth size plate: Jane Wright Pitt. This is William’s
mother. Jane was born in New York in 1798 and pass away in Canton
in 1878.
11) Tintype CDV sized: Says Grandma William Pitt on reverse.
Probably an unidentified family member.

“provided Wells Fargo banking and stage services.” [REF: Lake Tahoe’s

Rare Tahoe Broadside!
Lot # 519 NV / CA Lake Tahoe Broadside: Benton stage,
Niagara steamer 1878 This was how businesses advertised, before
radio and television: the broadside. This is a fine and rare example
from 1878 that shows the cooperation between four separate
businesses to lure tourist dollars to their prospective enterprises.
Businesses represented on this ad are Benton`s Stage Line, Virginia
& Truckee Railroad, the steamer “Niagara” and Lake Shore House in
Tahoe City. The itinerary for the daily trip promises passengers will
make connections in time to have lunch at their destination. One
of the legs of the journey includes a trip by stagecoach. The coach
was handled by the legendary Hank Monk, the driver mentioned by
Mark Twain in “Roughing It.” Monk was known mostly for taking
newspaper editor and presidential hopeful Horace Greeley on a
wild ride from Carson City to Placerville. An account of the ride was
read on the floor of Congress, effectively squelching Greeley`s quest
to be Commander in Chief. Block print style shows that the printer,
Morning Appeal Print of Carson City, didn`t do perfect work. There
are a few grammatical and spelling errors in the text. An historic
document on its own, this piece contains names in California and
Nevada history that will live forever. This is a fantastic document in
fantastic condition. There are condition issues. Broadside has been
folded. There is a tear on the bottom left and bottom center. Still
this is an authentic document from Nevada’s past. Please inspect.
