2007 ARKANAS STATE FOOTBALL SPRING PROSPECTUS
Head Coach Steve Roberts
Just two years removed from leading Arkansas State to the 2005 Sun Belt
Conference championship and New Orleans Bowl, head coach Steve
Roberts continues to make ASU a dominant force in the Sun Belt Conference
and has ASU on track for continued success in the upcoming years.
When the 2005 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year took over the program in December 2001, he impressed everyone with his wide-eyed enthusiasm and limitless energy. And, most of all, they believed that Roberts would
bring success to the Indian football program. Roberts has been the driving
force behind ASU’s recent success, leading the football program to its most
victories over a five-year span since 1986-90.
Roberts came to Arkansas State University and brought with him a fresh
enthusiasm, energy, and an “I Will” philosophy that has been adopted by
everyone associated with the program.

2007 ASU SPRING PROSPECTUS
“I Will” became the rallying cry as Roberts and his staff charged ahead
through a grueling 13-game schedule in 13 weeks with no open date in his
inaugural season and came within 11 points of winning the Sun Belt
Conference championship and playing in the Sun Belt Conference prize—the
New Orleans Bowl.
ASU ended the season with a record of 6-7 and finished third in the league
rankings. That tied the most wins since rejoining Division I-A in 1992. The
Indians finished in the top ten turnarounds by Division I-A football schools for
improving football records after finishing 2-9 in 2001. Also, attendance
increased significantly in 2002.
The 2003 season saw a lot of success as well. Among ASU’s many achievements was another increase in attendance, two defensive linemen ending up
in the National Football League and the team winning the Sun Belt
Conference academic award.
Under Roberts’ direction, ASU continues to add to the achievements that
began upon his arrival. The 2006 ASU team backed up its 2005 Sun Belt
championship with wins over teams such as Army, Memphis and New
Orleans Bowl champion Troy. The team posted six wins for the second consecutive year, marking the first time since the 1986 and 1987 seasons that
the Indians had recorded at least six victories in back-to-back seasons.
Roberts already holds the fifth most wins among ASU’s 26 all-time head
coaches and has led the Indians to a 17-6 record at Indian Stadium, which
included a 5-0 record in 2005.
During his tenure, ASU had upgraded its facilities with a new training room,
weight room, locker room, recruiting room and state-of-the-art ProGreen turf
on the field.
Roberts was named Arkansas State’s 26th head football coach on December
21, 2001, to bring full circle his coaching odyssey from his home state
through Louisiana and back. But, the trek has been a successful one, including an 8-4 record and national ranking in Division I-AA in 2000 at
Northwestern (La.) State.

Head Coach Steve Roberts
Roberts spent two seasons at NSU, where he and his staff
and team took on a tough schedule which included a 27-24
overtime upset at TCU. While at NSU, Roberts was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year
Award. Prior to going to NSU, Roberts served as the head
coach and defensive coordinator at Southern Arkansas
University in Magnolia from 1994-99. While there, his 1997
team won the Gulf South Championship, earning him Gulf
South Coach of the Year honors. The Muleriders finished
with a cumulative record of 26-5 from 1997-99, including 91 in 1999, 8-2 in 1998 and 9-2 in 1997.
During that span, his teams enjoyed top conference rankings in scoring offense, scoring defense, total offense and
total defense. At SAU, he also served as the defensive secondary coach and recruiting coordinator from 1990-94
before being named head coach. Academically, his program
ranked first in academic achievements in the Gulf South
Conference three seasons.
Roberts, an avid fisherman, graduated from Robinson High
School in Little Rock. A 1987 graduate of Ouachita Baptist
University, where he was an Academic All-American,
Roberts received his masters from SAU in 1989. He and his
wife Sherri have one daughter – Abby (12).

2007 ARKANAS STATE FOOTBALL SPRING PROSPECTUS
2007 Outlook
After leading the Arkansas State football program to its best back-to-back
seasons as Division I-A members in 2005 and 2006 and guiding the
Indians to their most victories over a five-year span since 1986-90, head
coach Steve Roberts has clearly molded the Arkansas State football team
into a consistent winner and a Sun Belt Conference contender on a yearto-year basis.
ASU won the 2005 Sun Belt Conference championship and represented
the league in the New Orleans Bowl before backing up its success with six
more victories in 2006 to make them bowl eligible once again. The last
two seasons marked the first time since 1986 and 1987 that ASU won at
least six victories in two consecutive years. The Indians have posted a
17-6 record at Indian Stadium for a .739 winning percentage under
Roberts’, but the last two years have been even more impressive as ASU
holds an 8-1 mark on its home turf over that span.
While the Indians finished tied for third in the eight-team Sun Belt
Conference race with a 4-3 league record in 2006, the Indians handed
New Orleans Bowl champion Troy their only conference loss of the year.
ASU also defeated Army and Memphis, giving the Tribe two non-conference Division I-A victories in the same season since returning to Division
I-A in 1992. ASU finished the year with a 6-6 record and along the way,
led the Sun Belt Conference in first downs, third-down conversions, time
of possession and allowed the fewest first downs. The Indians also boasted the league’s No. 2 defense and was the third least penalized team in
the conference.
Several young, but talented players emerged offensively for the Indians
last season. In fact, seven different freshmen or sophomores started at
least one game on offense in 2006, including Sun Belt Conference
Freshman of the Year Reggie Arnold and Second Team All-Sun Belt
Conference selection Matt Mandich. A redshirt freshman last season,
Corey Leonard also ended the season as the Indians regular starter at
quarterback and true freshman Brandon Thompkins showed he has bigplay potential as both a kick returner and wide receiver. Redshirt freshman Josh Arauco handled field goal duties all year long and earned
Honorable Mention All-America Honors at the end of the season.
While ASU returns the same number of starters on both offense and
defense (seven), the Indians had a more experienced group on defense.
Out of the seven returning starters from last season, five are seniors this
year. That experience was a big part of the reason the Indians’ defense
not only ranked second in the Sun Belt Conference in total defense, but
also 32nd in the nation. The Indians strength on defense appears to be
its secondary, where it returns all four starters from last year’s team that
ranked 12th nationally in pass defense and ninth in passes intercepted.
The defense returns the likes of All-Sun Belt Conference players Tyrell
Johnson (S), Khayyam Burns (S) and Koby McKinnon (LB). The defense
should also get a boost from the return of defensive ends Brian Flagg and
Brandon Rollins. Flagg was a regular starter in 2005, but missed all of last
season due to an injury suffered in the 2005 regular-season finale, while
Rollins started the first two games in 2006 before suffering a season-ending injury as well.
2007 ASU SPRING PROSPECTUS
With the bulk of its major contributors returning from last year’s team and
an incoming recruiting class rated as one of the top two in the Sun Belt
Conference by several highly respected recruiting services and analysts,
the 2007 season could be even better for Roberts and the Indians.
Quarterback
The Indians’ situation at quarterback has changed drastically
since the start of the 2006 season. This time last year, the
Indians didn’t know who their
starting quarterback was and
both players competing for the
job had either very little or no
game experience at the collegiate level. Travis Hewitt and
Corey Leonard virtually split
time through the first five games
last season and both were able
to get a lot of experience, but
Leonard eventually won the
starting job and took most of the
snaps over the final seven
games of the year. Leonard
emerged as a dual threat and
Corey Leonard, So.
after finishing with a team-high
1,321 passing yards and 331 rushing yards in 2006, is expected to enter
the season opener taking the snaps. Hewitt threw for 414 yards last season and rushed for another 78 and three touchdowns. T.C. Jennings, a
redshirt freshman, is expected to enter the season as ASU’s third quarterback.
Running Back
The Indians’ offensive strength
entering 2007 appears to be its
group of young and talented running backs. Sophomore’s Reggie
Arnold and Cedric Wilkerson carried the bulk of last years duties at
running back and both excelled. In
fact, Arnold rushed for 1,076 yards
and four touchdowns on his way to
being named Sun Belt Conference
Freshman of the Year, Second
Team All-Sun Belt Conference,
Freshman All-America by both the
Sporting News and Football
Writer’s Association of America and
the Little Rock Touchdown Club’s
ASU Player of the Year. Wilkerson

was the team’s second leading
rusher, posting 362 yards and two touchdowns on 86 attempts. Wilkerson

the line. Head coach Steve Roberts likes to redshirt as many freshmen as
possible, but could use some of his high school recruits if needed.
Memphis, rushing 23 times for 116 yards, both career highs. The ASU
coaching staff is also expecting big things from redshirt freshman Preston
Brown, who has looked good during spring practices and was a highly
touted recruit out of Smyrna, Tenn. The Indians will also have the service
of senior Chris Easley, who rushed for 475 yards in 2005 before suffering
a season-ending injury in the Indians’ 2006 fall camp.
Tight End
The Indians have two proven
tight ends in junior David
Johnson and sophomore J.T.
Jordan, both not only capable
of blocking but also catching
the football when called upon.
Johnson started every game
last year and led all tight ends
in both receptions (13) and
yards (200). The big tight end
averaged an impressive 15.4
yards per reception, the highest among all players with at
least 10 catches. J.T. Jordan
caught just three passes last
David Johnson, Jr.
season, but gained some valuable playing time and with departure of senior Brandon Henson, is expected to play a larger role in the ASU offense in 2007. Sophomore Trevor
Gillott made the move from wide receiver to tight end this spring and has
limited experience, but could see some time at the position. Junior college transfer Vernon Catlin, who may also play defensive end, could see
time at the position.
Heath Lockley, Sr.
Wide Receivers
The Indians were hurt by injuries at
the wide receiver position in 2006,
but return all of their players at this
position and have a very talented
and deep group after several
young players emerged as playmakers last year. Junior Kevin
Jones was ASU’s favorite target
last year, finishing the year with 25
receptions for 355 yards, both
team highs. Despite missing two
games with an injury, senior Levi
Dejohnette finished second on the
team in both receptions (23) and
yards (281). Dejohnette has
already passed 1,000 yards receiving for his career and needs just
nine more catches to become the
Patrick Higgins, Sr.
fourth player in school history to
post 100 receptions in a career.
Jones and Dejohnette are not the only threats ASU has out wide, however, as five other returning receivers combined to catch 40 passes for 532
yards and three touchdowns. Senior Patrick Higgins was the team’s
biggest deep threat, recording seven catches for 215 yards (30.7 yards
per reception) and three touchdowns despite missing the last three games
with an injury. Chris Miller, Joe Smith, Jarriel Norman and Brandon
Thompkins will also see plenty of action. Miller caught 13 passes for 132
yards, Smith nine for 73 yards, Thompkins eight for 89 yards and Norman
three for 23 yards. While Norman didn’t put up big numbers last year, he
Offensive Line
The Indians return almost every starter at the skill positions, but while they
return all-conference standout Matt Mandich and regular-starter Matt
Reibe along the offensive line from 2006 must still find three players to
step into starting roles and a number of capable back-ups to solidify the
offensive line. Mandich has received the most recognition up front, earning All-Sun Belt Conference honors each of his first two seasons. Reibe
has also been solid up front and is an all-conference candidate entering
2007. Kyle Koets is a likely candidate to be back in a starting role in 2007
after starting 11 games in 2005 and serving as a key reserve in 2006.
Along with Mandich, Reibe and Koets, returning linemen Zach
Eichenberger, Heath Lockley and Vincent Thrower helped lead the way for
an ASU running attack that ranked second in the Sun Belt Conference last
season. At the conclusion of spring practices, the line was expected to be
anchored by Mandich at left tackle, Reibe at left guard, Lockley at center,
Koets at right guard and Thrower at right tackle. Lockley, who started one
game last season, will have to replace First Team All-Sun Belt Conference
player Tanner Jenkins at center but performed well when on the field in
2006 and in spring practices. A number of newcomers could also factor
into the mix on the offensive line, including junior college transfers
Brandon Ciaramitaro and Mark Clemons as well as Rudy Harrell, who
practiced with the Indians during the spring. ASU also heavily recruited
several standout high school offensive lineman, signing five players along

had a great spring and was actually named the team’s Most Improved

Alex Carrington, So.
Defensive Line (tackles)
The Indians lost two interior defensive lineman off last year’s team in
Jamarrow James and Jeremy
Wallace, but returns starter Prince
Hickman and valuable reserve Curtis
Bonds. Hickman has the most experience among the Indians’ defensive
tackles, starting 21 career games
and posting 40 tackles over the last
three seasons. Bonds started one
game at defensive tackle in 2006,
but came off the bench in the other
11 outings to finish the year with 15
tackles and two sacks. Bonds is
expected to start alongside Hickman
on the defensive line, but sophomore
Khari Mays and redshirt freshman
Bryan Hall could challenge for playing time and help fill out the rotation.
Prince Hickman, Sr.
2007 ASU SPRING PROSPECTUS
Defensive End
The Indians hope to start the 2007 season under completely different circumstances than it ended the 2006 season at the defensive end position.
Injuries almost completely decimated the ASU corp of defensive ends by
the finish of last season, losing Brandon Rollins and Alex Carrington during the course of the season for the entire year. The Indians also played
the entire season without Brian Flagg, who was injured in the last game of
the 2005 campaign. Jonathan Najm and Reggie Green, ASU’s two starting defensive ends in its 2006 finale, have departed but the Indians will
benefit from the return of Flagg, Rollins and Carrington. Flagg was a regular starter during the Indians’ 2005 Sun Belt Conference championship
year, while Carrington and Rollins were both starters in 2006 before sustaining their injuries. With Carrington, Flagg and Rollins out for much of
last season, Rob Ramage saw much more playing time and will also
return after posting eight tackles, including four for a loss, and two sacks
as a junior last year. Stanley Wakwe and Levi Thompson could also figure into the mix during the fall.
Linebacker
ASU lost two of its three
starting linebackers from
its 4-3 base defense following the 2006 season,
including All-Sun Belt
Conference selection
Devrett Wade, but will
benefit from the return of
another All-Sun Belt
Conference selection in
senior Koby McKinnon.
McKinnon had the best
year of his career in
2006, recording 57 tackles, a team-high 5.5
tackles for loss, a teamhigh three sacks, two
Koby McKinnon, Sr.
interceptions, two pass
break-ups and one
forced fumble. Standout middle linebacker Josh Williams is gone, but Ben
Owens got a large amount of experience at the position last year and tallied 34 tackles, two sacks and an interception in a reserve role.
Sophomore Matt Taylor and redshirt freshman Javon McKinnon got most
of the reps opposite Koby McKinnon during spring practice with the first
team, but several players could handle starting duties to begin the season.
Junior college transfers Vernon Catlin and Charlton Hankston will have an
opportunity to make an immediate impact, while Roberts and his staff
signed five high school linebackers.
Cornerback
An experienced and talented group of cornerbacks return as part of an
ASU secondary that is the strength of the ASU defense. Senior’s Montis
Harrison and Darren Toney as well as junior Dominique Williams all spent
time as a starter last year and combined to record seven interceptions on
a team that was ranked ninth in the nation in the statistic. Toney and
10

Harrison both had three interceptions, the second most on the squad. The
three also combined for 14 pass break-ups and led by Toney’s 39 tackles,
posted 82 tackles as a group. Making the position even stronger will be
the return of sophomore Daylan Walker, who also had one interception
and one pass break-up in a reserve role last season.
Dominique Williams, Jr.
Safety
There might not be a better pair of
safetys in the Sun Belt Conference
than senior’s Tyrell Johnson and
Khayyam Burns, both all-conference selections that will be fouryear starters for the Indians.
Johnson is a three-time All-Sun Belt
Conference selection (first team
2005 and 2006 and second team
2004) and is among the top 10 players in Sun Belt Conference history
in career tackles (269) and career
interception return yards (7 interceptions for 167 yards). Burns has
started all 35 games of his career at
safety and is a two-time All-Sun Belt
Tyrell Johnson, Sr.
Conference selection. Last season,
he led the team with four interceptions for 116 yards and was second on the team in tackles (60) behind
only Johnson (63). Burns also posted a team-high seven pass break-ups
and recovered two fumbles as a junior.
Special Teams
With the return of place kicker Josh Arauco and punter Brett Shrable, the
ASU kicking game should be solid again in 2007. Arauco busted onto the

scene last year as a redshirt freshman, ranking second in the Sun Belt
Conference in field goals made, third in field goal percentage, fourth in
scoring (by kick) and sixth in scoring among all players. He ranked second in the nation in field goals made among all freshmen kickers to earn
him 2006 Sporting News Honorable Mention All-America honors. Arauco
also tied the ASU school record for consecutive field goals made with 10
and finished the year hitting 12-of-16 attempts for a .750 percentage.
Shrable took over punting duties for the Indians in 2006 and finished the
year ranked sixth in the Sun Belt Conference with 38.1 yard per punt. He
showed what he was capable of
when he was named Sun Belt
Conference Special Teams Player of
the Week after punting the football
for a 42.2 average in a victory over
Troy. Shrable had three kicks of 50
yards or more in the game and
pinned Troy inside its own 20-yard
line three times. Wide receiver
Brandon Thompkins headlines
ASU’s returnmen after bursting onto
the scene as a true freshman last
year. The playmaker returned 25
kicks for 548 yards (21.9 average
per return) and had two games
where he posted at least 130 kickreturn yards. Back to handle punt
return duties will be Kevin Jones, Brandon Thompkins, So.
who had a team-high 15 returns for
63 yards in 2006.
The Schedule
The 2007 schedule features several regional non-conference games highlighted by back-to-back home contests against Memphis and SMU as well
as road outings at national powers Texas and Tennessee. The Indians will
open their 2007 campaign at Texas on Sept. 1, which will also be the first
ever game between the Indians and Longhorns. ASU will continue its oldest rivalry the next weekend when it hosts Memphis and then faces
Conference USA member SMU at Indian Stadium, one of six home games
on the schedule. ASU will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to play Tennessee on
Sept. 22 in another first-ever meeting for the Indians. Following ASU’s
open date, the Indians will begin Sun Belt Conference play at LouisianaMonroe on Oct. 6. Arkansas State will host Louisiana-Lafayette on homecoming weekend Oct. 13 in what will also be its first home SBC game.
ASU will catch Sun Belt Conference co-champions Middle Tennessee and
Troy in consecutive games on Oct. 20 and Oct. 27, respectively. Arkansas
State will continue their Sun Belt Conference slate at Florida Atlantic on
Nov. 10 and then wrap up league competition at Indian Stadium with North
Texas on Nov. 15. The Indians will close out their regular season Nov. 24
with another regional game against Souther Mississippi, which ASU last
faced in the 2005 New Orleans Bowl. The game will be the first in a homeand-home series as the Golden Eagles and Indians will meet in Jonesboro
in 2008.

2007 ARKANAS STATE FOOTBALL SPRING PROSPECTUS
2007 ASU Signings
Arkansas State head football coach Steve Roberts has announced that 21 high school players, including six from the state
of Arkansas, and four junior college transfers signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Indians in 2007.
“I am very excited to introduce our 2007 recruiting class,” said Roberts. “This is a tremendous class. We were very fortunate to meet the greater needs of our team and sign a group of athletes that can fill a lot of different roles for us. I am
very happy about these individuals and the ability that they bring to our program. There is tremendous character among
them. The versatility in this class is greater than any other that we have signed to this point and there are a number of
players that can play different positions. You see a number of guys in this class that have the ability to help you not only
at their primary positions, but also on special teams and on plays in special situations.”
Among ASU’s six signees from Arkansas are players from Jonesboro, Ft. Smith (2), Monticello, West Helena and
Osceola. The remaining 18 high school and junior college standouts that signed with ASU are from 10 different states,
including Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, Tennessee and Texas.
The Indians inked 12 offensive players, 10 defensive players and three players that could wind up on either side of the
ball. Among the offensive players are one quarterback, two fullbacks, one running back, seven offensive linemen and one
receiver. ASU also signed two defensive ends, one defensive lineman, five linebackers and two defensive backs.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (9/9/06) — Arkansas State’s hopes of beating Oklahoma State
in “The Rock Classic” were dashed Saturday night when OSU defeated the Indians,
35-7, at War Memorial Stadium. ASU (1-1), playing before 23,816 fans (a record
crowd for an ASU football game in the War Memorial Stadium) grabbed the early
lead in the first quarter on a 51-yard interception return by free safety Khayyam
Burns. Burns stepped in front of the Cowboy receiver and snagged quarterback
Bobby Reid’s pass and raced the distance for the score. Kicker Josh Arauco was
good on the PAT to put ASU up, 7-0. Following ASU’s lone score, it was all
Oklahoma State the rest of the night. The Cowboys scored twice in the second quarter on a 13-yard run by Reid at 11:03 and a seven-yard run by Mike Hamilton at 3:03
and twice in the third period when fullback Jeremiah Burton caught a four-yard pass
from Reid out of the backfield and a two-yard run by Julius Crosslin at 7:13. Cowboy
tight end Brandon Pettigrew caught a six-yard pass from Reid with 3:57 left in the
game for the final score. Kicker Jason Ricks connected on all five extra points to
seal the win. OSU’s Hamilton led all rushers with 73 yards on 17 carries and one
TD. ASU backs Chris James and Reggie Arnold each finished the night with 51
yards. James’ total came in seven trips while Arnold carried 18. Oklahoma State out
rushed the Indians, 171-110. Roberts continued to use his two quarterback system
with Travis Hewitt completing four passes in 13 attempts for 47 yards and one interception. Redshirt freshman Corey Leonard was three-of-six for 31 yards. OSU’s
defense didn’t help matters as they sacked the Indian signal callers a total of five
times. Reid also encountered some problems when he was intercepted three times
by Darren Toney, Koby McKinnon and Burns. Linebacker Josh Williams led all
defenders with 10 stops.
JONESBORO, Ark. (9/2/06) — Reggie Arnold rushed for 140 yards and scored a 17yard touchdown in his first-ever collegiate football game to lead Arkansas State (10) past Army (0-1), 14-6, Saturday night in Indian Stadium. Army got on the scoreboard first courtesy of a 26-yard field goal by Austin Miller in the first quarter with
8:19 showing on the clock. Arnold, a 5-9, 217-pound redshirt freshman, found his
way into the end zone with 3:52 left in the second quarter for the score. Kicker Josh
Arauco’s extra point put the Indians on top, 7-3. Despite a few mistakes, ASU
appeared to dominate the game with tough defense and a solid offensive performance behind the efforts of the Indians’ two quarterbacks, Travis Hewitt and Corey
Leonard. The 6-1, 210-pound Hewitt started the ball game and Leonard, a 6-1 196pound redshirt freshman came in on the Indians’ third possession. ASU’s other
score came on a 10-yard run by Hewitt at the 11:54 mark in the third quarter. Miller
added another field goal late in the fourth quarter to end the scoring. ASU rolled up
319 yards of total offense including 222 yards on the ground and 97 yards through
the air. Army finished the game with 164 yards of offense. Hewitt and Leonard combined to connect on 11 of 16 passes. Chris Miller led all Indian receivers with four
catches for 21 yards. Army quarterback David Pevoto completed 12 of 23 for 95
yards and two interceptions and the Black Knights’ ground game was led by Wesley
McMahand with 13 carries for 35 yards. Defensively, the Tribe was paced by safety Tyrell Johnson with nine total stops, followed by tackle Jamarrow James and linebacker Josh Williams, with seven each. Williams played his first game since the
2004 season. Free safety Jordan Murray led the Black Knights with 12. Following
the win, ASU students and fans stormed the playing field and easily tore down the
goal posts on both ends. The incident was the first time in the stadium’s 31-year history.

Arkansas State 31, Florida International 6
DALLAS, Texas (9/23/06) - The Arkansas State football team could not pick up a win
in its first road game of the season, falling 55-9 to the SMU Mustangs at Gerald J.
Ford Stadium. Mustang quarterback Justin Willis connected with tight end Ryan
Kennedy on three first half touchdown passes as SMU built a 38-6 halftime lead.
Willis and Kennedy put the Mustangs on the board early when they connected on a
6-yard touchdown pass with 13:30 remaining in the opening quarter. ASU answered
on its second possession with a 69-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Corey
Leonard to Patrick Higgins. Following the 84-yard drive, the extra point was
blocked, and the Indians trailed 7-6 with 8:49 to play in the first quarter. SMU added
three more touchdowns from the 1:44 mark of the first quarter to the 12:15 mark of
the second to take a 28-6 lead. Willis and Kennedy hooked up again just over three
minutes later on a 10-yard scoring play that left ASU facing a 35-6 deficit, and
Thomas Morstead capped the first half with a 50-yard field goal as time expired,
sending ASU to the locker room trailing 38-6. An ASU turnover on its first possession of the second half led to a 27-yard field goal from Morstead that extended the
Mustang lead to 41-6 with 10:12 remaining in the third quarter. ASU took advantage
of a 30-yard completion from Travis Hewitt to Higgins on the Indians' second possession of the third quarter, setting up a first-and-goal at the Mustang seven, but the
drive stalled at the SMU three and the Indians settled for a 20-yard field goal by Josh
Arauco that cut the Mustang lead to 41-9 with 3:57 remaining in the period. SMU
tacked on a rushing touchdown and a special teams touchdown to wrap up the scoring. Arnold led the ASU rushing attack with 89 yards on 16 carries, while Leonard
completed 6-of-14 passes for 110 yards with one touchdown. Darren Toney
returned four kickoffs for 101 yards for the Indians, and Marcus Brown led the ASU
defense with five tackles.
MIAMI, Fla. (9/30/06) — Sparked by a strong performance by the Indian defense
and 146 yards rushing by tailback Reggie Arnold, Arkansas State began defense of
its 2005 Sun Belt Conference Championship with a 31-6 victory over the Florida
International Golden Panthers at FIU Stadium. ASU forced four Panther turnovers
and limited the FIU offense to 186 yards on the night, including just nine rushing
yards. The Indians cashed in on an FIU turnover when freshman tailback Cedrick
Wilkerson barreled in from one yard out for the ASU touchdown with 10:05 remaining in the opening quarter. The Indians put together a 10-play, 67-yard drive that
made the score 14-0 when quarterback Corey Leonard scrambled left and found the
end zone from seven yards out with 6:01 remaining in the first half. Following another FIU turnover to start the second half, the Indian offense needed just four plays to
find the end-zone, getting the touchdown when quarterback Travis Hewitt scored on
a draw with 9:53 to play in the third for the 21-0 Arkansas State advantage. Florida
International got on the board with 1:40 remaining in the third when Panther tailback
A’mod Ned scored on a five yard run, but the extra point attempt was blocked by
ASU’s Brandon Williams, leaving the Tribe with a 21-6 advantage. The Indians
answered the Panther touchdown on their next possession with a drive that ended
with an 18-yard Arauco field goal with 12:17 to play that lifted the Indian lead to 246, and ASU’s defense sealed the deal with 5:57 remaining when cornerback
Dominique Williams intercepted a Padrick pass at the Panther 32 and returned it to
the 25, setting up a 3-yard touchdown run from Hewitt that set the final at 31-6.

JONESBORO, Ark (10/7/06) - Quarterback Corey Leonard's 10-yard touchdown run
with 2:07 remaining lifted the Arkansas State Indians to a 10-6 victory over the
Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks in a Sun Belt Conference battle at Indian Stadium.
Leonard's touchdown helped the Indians overcome five turnovers in Warhawk territory, and kept ASU unbeaten in Sun Belt play at 2-0. Arkansas State improved to 32 overall, and stretched its Indian Stadium win streak to seven games with the win.
With the loss, ULM dropped to 1-4 overall, 0-2 in league play. ASU's game-winning
drive began at the Indian 38 with 5:20 remaining. Leonard hooked up with tailback
Cedric Wilkerson on the second play of the drive for a first down at the Warhawk 38,
then hit wideout Gary Vincent for another first down on third-and-nine at the ULM 21
with just under four minutes remaining. Tailback Reggie Arnold picked up another
first down on a run to the Warhawk 11 with 2:55 remaining, and two plays later,
Leonard did the honors on a draw play from nine yards out. Arauco was good on the
point-after for the 10-6 ASU lead. ULM took over at its 20 with 1:58 to play and
drove as far as the ASU 29, but the Indian defense forced four straight incomplete
passes to preserve the win. ASU's Khayyam Burns broke up a pass from Lancaster
to LaGregory Wade in the end zone on fourth down to end the drive.
Leonard led the Indians in rushing with 48 yards on seven carries, and completed
13-of-26 passes for 130 yards, with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Arnold
added 48 yards on 10 carries and Wilkerson tallied 10 carries for 42 yards. Hewitt
completed 6-of-10 passes on the night for 70 yards and one interception.

2007 ASU SPRING PROSPECTUS
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (10/14/06) — With the clock reading :00, Arkansas State receiver
Patrick Higgins jumped high in the end zone among a throng of Memphis defenders
to catch a 53-yard pass from quarterback Corey Leonard to lead the Indians to a
come-from-behind 26-23 victory over Memphis in the Liberty Bowl. Higgins had two
catches on the day for 79 yards. Running back Cedric Wilkerson, subbing for an
injured Reggie Arnold, surprised the Memphis defense by picking up 116 yards on
23 carries, 74 of which were in the second quarter. Leonard finished the day completing 12 of 23 passes for 219 yards and two interceptions. After leading the entire
first half, 17-6, things looked grim for ASU late in the game after Memphis had
erased the lead to 23-20 in favor of the Tigers when UM receiver Ryan Scott threw
a 37-yard touchdown strike to Joseph Doss on the flea flicker. A few plays later,
ASU’s fate appeared to be sealed when Leonard was intercepted by UM’s Heath
Grant with just over four minutes left in the game. A pass interference penalty
against the Indians set up Memphis’ first score, a 28-yard field goal by Matt Reagan
with 10:38 left in the first quarter. ASU struck back at 5:38 with a 16-yard run by
freshman receiver Brandon Thompkins. Josh Arauco connected on the point after to
give ASU the 7-3 lead. Higgins added another TD early in the second period at
13:31 on a 26-yard pass from Leonard. Arauco had a couple of field goals of 33 and
27 yards. The third quarter belonged to the Tigers when Duke Calhoun scored on a
49-yard pass play from quarterback Martin Hankins and a 28-yard field goal by
Reagan to cut ASU’s lead to 17-16. Following the Scott-to-Doss play, Leonard threw
the football up for grabs resulting in the winning catch. There was a short delay as
officials reviewed the play, but the result was the same.

Oct. 28, Fort Lauderdale, FL (Lockhart Stadium - 8,129)
Florida Atlantic 29, Arkansas State 0
JONESBORO, Ark. (10/21/06) - Freshman tailback Reggie Arnold rushed for 121
yards and three touchdowns, and freshman Corey Leonard added 77 rushing yards,
187 passing yards and a touchdown through the air to lead Arkansas State to a 2910 win over the Mean Green of North Texas at Indian Stadium. After battling to a
10-10 halftime tie, the Indians scored touchdowns on their first three possessions of
the second half - all one-yard runs from Arnold - to distance themselves from the
Mean Green, while ASU's defense limited North Texas to just 94 yards after the
break. Arnold's first touchdown capped a 77-yard drive on the Indians' initial possession of the second half. His second score followed an interception by Indian safety Khayyam Burns late in the third quarter, and his final touchdown came with 9:44
remaining in the game, giving the Indians a 29-10 lead that would prove to be the
final score. Following Arnold's final touchdown, North Texas drove deep into ASU
territory, picking up a first-and-goal at the Arkansas State six, but the Indian defense
slammed the door for good when it stopped the Mean Green on four straight downs,
including a fourth-and-goal from the ASU one to kill the drive. From there, the Indian
offense ran out the clock to seal the win. Offensively, Leonard finished the night with
264 yards of total offense, a career high. Jones also posted career-best numbers on
the night finishing the game with three receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Burns led the Indians with eight tackles and an interception, while
strong safety Tyrell Johnson also recorded eight tackles on the night. Linebacker
Koby McKinnon added seven tackles, and combined with defensive tackle
Jamarrow James for one sack of Meager.
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (10/28/06) — Turnovers helped to bring Arkansas State’s
five-game Sun Belt Conference win streak to a halt as the Indians were shut out, 290, by Florida Atlantic at Lockhart Stadium. Turnovers plagued the Indians throughout the game with quarterbacks Corey Leonard and Travis Hewitt throwing five combined interceptions. Most were tipped by FAU defenders and fell into the arms of
Owl players. In addition, ASU fumbled twice and lost one. It was the lowest offensive output this season for the Tribe with 104 yards of total offense, including six
yards rushing and 98 yards passing. The game got off to a rocky start for ASU when
Florida Atlantic had a 21-play drive that chewed up nearly eight minutes off the clock
and resulted in a 21-yard field goal. On the Owls’ opening drive of the second quarter, B.J. Manley rushed for the 35-yard touchdown to put FAU up 10-0. Following a
fumble by ASU’s Corey Leonard, FAU’s Warley Leroy put up another field goal, a 41yarder, with 9:40 remaining in the second quarter to make it, 13-0. ASU punter Brett
Shrable recovered a high snap and tossed the football out of the end zone in the
third quarter for a safety, a three-yard pass reception from Clayton to Aaron Sanchez
with 3:37 left in the game, and another interception by Small for a 22-yard scoring
return with 2:31 left rounded out the day’s scoring. A couple of bright moments for
the Indians included receiver Levi Dejohnette who reached the 1,000-yard milestone
for his career with his four catches for 73 yards on the day. He also moved up to
ninth on ASU’s all-time chart for career receptions. Defensively, linebacker Koby
McKinnon led with nine total tackles followed by Ben Owens with seven.

AUBURN, Ala. — Sixth-ranked Auburn was too much for Arkansas State as the
Tigers defeated the Indians 27-0 before 78,493 fans at Jordan-Hare Stadium in
Auburn. Despite being intercepted twice by the ASU defense, Auburn quarterback
Brandon Cox completed 12 of 21 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns, including a 13 yard strike to wideout Courtney Taylor on the Tigers’ first possession to give
Auburn an early 7-0 lead. Auburn added a pair of field goals from John Vaughn to
take a 13-0 lead at the half. The other two Tiger touchdowns came on a one-yard
run from fullback Carl Stewart, and a 19 yard pass from Cox to Stewart, both in the
third quarter. Junior Montis Harrison, and freshman Daylan Walker both notched
their first career interceptions when they picked off a pair of Cox passes, and linebacker Ben Owens also grabbed his first career interception when he intercepted
Auburn quarterback Blake Field late in the game. ASU’s best chance to get on the
scoreboard came in the fourth quarter, when the Indians drove from the ASU one to
the Auburn three, but a field goal attempt on fourth and goal went awry when holder Brett Shrable could not hold on to a high snap from Nick Emfinger. Offensively,
ASU quarterback Corey Leonard completed nine of 17 passes for 61 yards, while
tailbacks Reggie Arnold and Chris James rushed for 37 yards each, and wideout
Kevin Jones added four catches for 34 yards. In addition to the three interceptions
by the ASU defense, junior Khayyam Burns added eight tackles, a forced fumble
and a fumble recovery, while Jonathan Najm and Tyrell Johnson added five stops
each.
JONESBORO, Ark. — The ASU Indians saw their eight-game home win streak
snapped with a 38-10 loss to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders at Indian Stadium.
Middle Tennessee jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter before ASU got on
the board with a 33-yard field goal from Josh Arauco with 4:58 remaining in the second quarter, then blocked a Blue Raider field goal on the final play of the half to
swing the momentum in the Indians’ favor heading into the locker room. Arkansas
State opened the second half by driving to the Blue Raider 15, but Middle
Tennessee’s Brandon Robinson intercepted a pass by ASU quarterback Corey
Leonard and returned it 88 yards for a touchdown to stretch the Middle Tennessee
lead to 17-3. The Blue Raiders added a seven yard touchdown run by Desmond
Gee later in the quarter, and a five yard score from DeMarco McNair to make it 313. ASU made it 31-10 when Leonard connected with Levi Dejohnette for a 14-yard
touchdown with 4:38 remaining, and Middle Tennessee set the final score at 38-10
when McNair scored from 48 yards out on the Blue Raiders’ next possession. ASU
tailback Reggie Arnold rushed for 116 yards to lead the Indian offense, while Josh
Williams led the Indian defense with nine tackles and a blocked field goal.

TROY, Ala. — Cedric Wilkerson scored on a one-yard run with 17 seconds left in the
game to give Arkansas State a 33-26 win over Troy Saturday at Movie Gallery
Stadium. The Trojans led 26-25 with 3:58 remaining as the Indians were driving
downfield. With fourth down and eight yards to go and 1:36 left in the game, ASU
quarterback Corey Leonard scrambled 11 yards and picked up the first down to keep
the drive alive. As the Tribe offense continued to move, Wilkerson took advantage
of a third-and-goal situation to bull it in from the one capping off a 70-yard drive.
Leonard ran in the two-point conversion to cement ASU’s lead. When play resumed
and with eight seconds showing on the clock, Troy quarterback Omar Haugabook
threw a long pass which was intercepted by ASU’s Darren Toney to run out the clock
and seal the win for the Indians. Redshirt freshman kicker Josh Arauco played a
huge role in ASU’s win by connecting on three field goals including a 21, 22, and 36yarder. Leonard, a redshirt freshman from Covington, La., ended the night hitting 13
of 26 pass attempts for 188 yards and two TDs. He also rushed 20 times for 76
yards. Running back Reggie Arnold led ASU with 90 yards rushing on 19 attempts.
Defensively, safety Tyrell Johnson had nine tackles while linebacker Josh Williams
and safety Khayyam Burns each had eight.
LAFAYETTE, La. (11/25/06) - Despite a stellar performance by running back Reggie
Arnold, Louisiana-Lafayette scored twice in the fourth quarter to spoil Arkansas
State's season finale, 28-13, at Cajun Field. Arnold carried the football 18 times for
156 yards, including 110 in the first half which put him over the 1,000-yard mark for
the season. With the Indians down by one, 14-13, ULL quarterback Jerry Babb ran
for a 23-yard score with 11:31 left in the game. Shortly after, Tyrell Fenroy scored on
a one-yard run. Drew Edmiston hit both extra points to end ASU's quest for a 7-5
record. ASU got on the board first when Josh Arauco connected on a 38-yard field
goal with 10:02 in the first quarter on the Indians' first series. Fenroy answered with
a seven-yard TD run at the start of the second quarter. Arnold set up ASU's ensuing touchdown by rushing for 22 yards and then 19. Quarterback Corey Leonard
threw a 15-yard TD strike to Levi Dejohnette and Arauco was good on the PAT with
10:43 remaining to put the Indians up, 10-7. Fenroy scored again on a two-yard run
just before the half. Arauco's 36-yard field goal with 14:53 in the final period was
ASU's final score on the day. Both teams were pretty evenly matched with ASU
gaining 365 yards of total offense to ULL's 372. Leonard ended the day hitting 13 of
his 30 passes for 132 yards and one TD. Babb was 10-of-18 with one interception
and 107 yards. Defensively, Tyrell Johnson led ASU's assault with 10 tackles,
including eight solo stops. Linebacker Koby McKinnon had seven. Khayyam Burns
finished with one interception for 15 return yards and recovered a fumble and
returned it 19 yards.
