From the Principal
Falcon Families,
As our school year comes to a close, please allow me to thank all
our students and parents for a great 2014-2015 school year.
Our school data continues to improve and our efforts for becoming
an exemplary school in the district are well underway.
We continue to have higher expectations for our students:
• We continue to see growth in our reading, writing, math and
science test data.
• Our testing is going well, and we are anticipating more students than ever to pass their
Advanced Placement tests this spring.
• The number of student taking Advance Placement courses in the future is going to increase
as we continue to add more Advance Placement course offerings.
Campus climate:
• DHS has a great campus. It is a fantastic learning environment, but even outstanding
schools have room for improvement. I have been having regular meetings with student
representatives in order to find more ways to improve school spirit and the overall campus
climate. We have some activities planned for the spring as well as for next year to take
Falcon Pride to a whole new level.
Graduation and the end of the year:
• Spring is an exciting time of year for high school students especially seniors with Prom, GradBash, Senior Breakfast and finally Graduation. All of these activities will be done before the
seniors know it, and then it is off to the scary “real world”. No matter if it is off to college or
right out into the business world, I am confident our students will be successful. Graduation
will be June 4 at 9:00 a.m. at Ruth Eckerd Hall.
I hope everyone has a great summer.
Sincerely,
Kyle Johnson
Principal

AVID’s Going and Growing Strong!
By Roseann M. Kuerzi, MBA, MAT
Time to say goodbye to our seniors. Amia Jelks accepted to–
Johnson & Wales University and St. Petersburg College, Rachel
Barcellona accepted to St. Petersburg College and has been awarded
the 2015 Prudential Spirit of Community ward for her outstanding
volunteer work. In addition, on behalf of the President’s Council
on Service and Civic participation she has received the President’s
Volunteer Service Award certificate and a letter from President
Obama. Jabria Jenkins plans to become an elementary school
teacher and decided the St. Petersburg College education program
was what she is looking for. Adam Ricketts is going to film school
(watch for him on the red carpet…) Felice Scrutchins has many
options and one at the top of her list is attending FAMU. Lauren
Furno has plans to attend Liberty University and majoring in Music
Education and Karim Pacheco-Alomar is considering options in the
medical and education fields
AVID is more than a program, it is a family! Graduating seniors,
Amia Jelks and Rachel Barcellona are applying to PCS to become
official paid tutors for the DHS AVID program. From students to tutors;
proof AVID is about family.
JOIN OUR volunteer tutors. We are looking for volunteers to
provide enrichment in the role of tutor. Contact Kimberly Cerda at
DHS for details about becoming a volunteer.
Site team, recruitment & AP collaboration: Our final monthly
site team meeting of the year was held on May 6, 2015. The topics
covered: student recruitment, making AVID more transparent school
wide, and covering summer institute and site team planning for the
2015/16 school year.
AVID in a nutshell: Why should my child join the AVID program?
They will be challenged. Enroll in rigorous courses, learn how to
collaborate with others, get organized physically and mentally,
teach academic survival skills, and visit universities. We bridge the
gap between high school and college. AVID works! Sometimes it
is challenging to forge ahead without being able to see the rewards.
Our students have worked hard this year to achieve higher grades, get
better test scores and learned how to set S.M.A.R.T. goals that are not
only attainable but admirable. Recruitment 2015/16: It is NOT too late to enroll. We are growing
fast~ enrollment: Freshman-final number will not be available until
June, Sophormore-46, Junior-20, and Senior-5.
CALLING ALL SENIORS: If you are enrolled in at least TWO of AP,
Honors, or dual enrollment and you have at least a 2.5 GPA, plan to go
to college and would like to learn how to bridge the gap between high
school and college, AVID is for you. Need to apply to college, take your
ACT or SAT, AVID is for you. Don’t know how you will pay for college
(FAFSA, student loans, grants, scholarships), AVID is for you. If your
writing, critical thinking skills, inquiry skills, collaboration, organization
or reading skills are not on the college level, AVID is for you. AVID is a
college prepatory program that helps you transition from high-school
to college. We take you to the next level. It is NOT too late to enroll.
2015/16 at a glance: College visits: Keiser University, UT, FAMU,
FSU, USF, UCF, and FIU. Guest speakers: Johnson & Wales, Harvard,
Yale, FIDM, Keiser, others pending. Fundraisers- TAG, Candy sales,
Pizza sales, karaoke competition. Parade: Dunedin High School parade
& goaled to Dunedin City Parade. (Float pending parent donation).
From our family to yours… thank you for all of your hard work
and dedication. Have a happy and safe summer.
Senior Yearbook Pictures
for the Class of 2016
All students planning to graduate in 2016 need
to have their yearbook pictures taken this summer. Leonard’s Studio has mailed appointment cards to all
current juniors. If you did not receive an appointment
card, please contact Ms. Schuck, the yearbook teacher,
at [email protected]. The first on campus photo date will be June 3,
please try to have pictures taken (by the time on the
appointment card) then. If you cannot make the prescheduled appointment, call Leonard’s at 1-800-2154852 to make other arrangements.
Leonard’s will also be on campus in the auditorium
on August 10 and 11. Make an appointment for those
dates now because appointment times fill quickly.
Students who do not have yearbook pictures
taken on campus on June 3 or August 10 or 11 must
have pictures taken in Leonard’s Clearwater or Brandon
studio. Appointments are required for all studio
appointments. Call the 800 number for an appointment.
The very last day for senior pictures for the
yearbook is Sept. 8. Seniors who do not have their
photos taken by Sept. 8 will not appear in the senior
section of the 2016 yearbook. There is a $10 sitting fee for all senior pictures,
both on and off campus.
