Remembrance Day
Year 9 Ceramics Sculpture students constructed an art
installation piece for Remembrance Day last Thursday morning. Staff and students gathered and paused to remember
those who have made the supreme sacrifice in times of war.
Inspired by the breathtaking display of crotched poppies at
Federation Square in Melbourne at the centenary for
Anzac Day, the Year 9 Ceramics Sculpture class was guided
by teacher Deb Doyle as students collaborated to create their
own field of poppies in and around Galen’s War Memorial,
built earlier this year. Through the combined efforts of the
Year 9 Ceramics Sculpture class and other homerooms across
the college, hundreds of red poppies were created. Some
poppies were also inscribed with initials, names of solders
and tributes, which made for a very meaningful and stunning
visual display.

VCAL construct new seats
On Thursday 12th November Year 11 VCAL officially opened newly constructed
seats outside the college Engineering building. Students involved in the project
have completed the work as part of the VCAL – Work Related Skills class. Galen
teacher Mal Vickery has been instrumental in coordinating the project, and in
addition to the new seats, students have also built their own pizza ovens.
Students had the opportunity to share their hard work with teachers last Thursday at the opening, along with
gourmet pizza’s, fresh from their
new ovens. VCAL Co-ordinator
Beth Code stated, “It’s great
seeing the students apply what
they’ve learnt in class to a real
construction project. It allows
them to work together and make
a positive contribution toward
the college.”

Year 8 English Poetry
The Mighty Beast
By Katelyn Papakostas (8/4)
There it was
The most spectacular thing I had ever experienced.
The unique visual spectacle was,
Something that seemed very unreal.
It seemed that this mighty beast,
Was mother to all around it,
The natural worlds elder.
Shrubs around the mighty beast,
Bow down as if,
Slaves to their king.
But somehow,
It doesn’t seem to threaten anything.
Time
There is never enough time
You don’t know what it’s worth until it’s gone.
Until it leaves you torn.
Until it leaves you without the one you love most.
Until it makes you fear boast.
As I walk past the mighty beast,
Seeing the gallery of aboriginal rock art,
In its natural wonder.
Touching the giant red sand pit,
Under my feet.
Hearing the fresh rain water,
Gushing over the bright red cliff face.
Flies are zipping past as if,
I’m the finish line to a Bathurst.
Birds humming around,
Racing people up the mighty beast.
Watching the sun go down over the bright red Uluru,
The mighty gracious beast.

Go back
I have to go back
Go back
Against time
To save her.
I have to go back
And go back
And go back
As many times as it takes
To save her
Time took her too young
And left me feeling dumb
As I watched the gun
Being fired.
I will go back
If that is all I can do
I will go back
Until this terror is through
I will go back
And know it was you
I will go back
In time
As the sun falls
Flash back
By Josh Devine (8/4)
The swishing and swaying of trees,
Children playing on their knees.
Remembering the memories by my death bed,
Waiting for light to show me ahead.
I may be gone but yet it seems I am not dead,
Alive in your memory, time might freeze,
But just remember, when we were both on our knees.
As the sun falls
It turns quiet
Cars stop
Shops shut
Birds stop singing
It’s silent
It all stops
Every thing asleep
Darkness.

The Lonely Piano
By Kate Jolly (8/7)
Looming by its lonesome,
Waiting readily
To let out its sound so handsome,
To show off its sweet symphony.
My fingers fluttering
Over the strips of ebony and spruce.
Each string resonating
As the chords call a truce.
With every tantalizing trill
And every rampant resonance
The notes seem to fill
The room with eloquence.
As my fingers leave the keys
And my foot leaves the pedal,
The lingering notes seem to seize
And the echo seems to gentle…
And the piano is lonely once more.
This World of Games
By Katelyn Papakostas (8/4)
The power button lights up
The machine hums as it comes to life
The keys light up like stars in the sky
As I sit in this place
Ready to fight.
This is the place
where I fight for honour.
This is the place
where I am sometimes a loner.
This is the place
where there is no time to go slower.
This place
Is made of pixels
That make up the picture
Of adventure.
This place
Is where you can jump
into the screen
and live in a virtual world.
This place
is where I game.
A night in dark paradise
By Matilda Drage (8/7)
Tall trees trembling in the wind
Stars shining like broken glass
The night had truly set in
Dew was forming on the grass
The Moon smiled through the clouds
As the wolves howled and worshipped
The nocturnal animals come out hungry and proud
Balancing on tree roots then they tripped
They were just battered and bruised
The moon was on the run,
But the sun was in pursuit
And now this poem is truly done
Bang
By Josh Devine (8/4)
Motorbike
Rushing
Roaring
Ripping
across the field
From end to end
Heart in your throat
When you start to slip
Bang
You fall in slow motion
With the bike on top of you
It’s all over.

Junior Production - Aladdin
After several weeks of performance rehearsals, band
practice and set design sessions, over 100 students
from Years 7 - 10 lit up the stage in Aladdin last
Monday and Tuesday. Production Director Julie Nolan
stated, “Our Junior Production is utilised as a great
educational tool, whereby students from year 10 are
given the opportunity to take on leadership roles as
directors and choreographers, leading students from
years 7-9. It’s always pleasing to see how well they all
work together.”

Cows Create Cash
Galen students were awarded first prize in the Cows Create
Careers program run by the Dairy Australia. The program
involved groups of students caring for two calves at school
for nineteen days. During that time students researched the
Dairy Industry and careers in the Dairy Industry.
They prepared a research poster, a newsletter and made a
“Moovie”. These products were judged and prizes awarded.
Galen’s Mooglatt team of Tess Mundy, Talia McLauren,
Gabriella Molinaro, Lucy North and Amy Holmes won first
prize for their efforts in the Year 7 and 8 section. Each student
received $50.
Another Galen team, Butternut Babes, Emma O’Keefe, Sophia
McCarthy, Leah Nolan & Tayla Igri finished second, half a
point behind.
Congratulations to all of the students in 74 and 75 who took
part in the program and to their teachers Ms Chan and Mrs
Nixon, and Mrs Trethowan our Lab tech who helped with
the program.
2/24th Battalion
Award Dinner
On Saturday November 7th, the 2/24th Battalion
Association held a reunion dinner to commemorate 75
years of service in Wangaratta. The dinner included special
presentations that included the recognition of Year 11
students who have shown involvement, contribution,
consideration and awareness of the needs of others. This
year the Galen student awarded with this honour was
Jessica Morris. Jessica has demonstrated leadership and
commitment to the betterment of school and community
life through her role as a student leader and in her social
justice work such as working on the soup van. Jessica is a
worthy recipient of the award and we congratulate Jessica
on receiving this honour.

Year 7 Girls Hume Cricket
The Year 7 Girls cricket team had a great day at the Barr Reserve on
Thursday 29th October. Despite their slow start to the day, they came
home strongly in their last two games to claim third spot. The girls
showed terrific skill and excellent sportsmanship throughout day.
Special mentions going to Bailey Thwaites for scoring 28 off one over
and to Molly Campbell for her great bowling.
Woman of the tournament went to Sophia McCarthy, who led the
way with the most runs and most wickets for the day. Well done girls!
Thanks to Mr Beattie who organized and coached the team.

Lost first game 141 – 61
Lost second 107 – 80
Won third 110 – 62
Won fourth 121 – 71
Year 7 & 8
Boys and Girls Tennis
The Junior School tennis teams had a very
successful day at the Upper Hume competition held at the Wodonga Tennis Centre on
Friday 30th October.
Year 8 Boys – Champions
The Year 8 boys’ tennis team consisted of Sam
Allen, Luke Toohey, Andrew Lindner, Mitchell
Holt and Josh Masters.
The boys won all of their matches quite easily,
with Sam and Luke finishing the day
undefeated in all of their sets. Tennis debutant,
Mitch Holt won his first ever singles match.
Andrew and Josh also played some good
tennis throughout the day.
Year 7 Boys – Champions
The Year 7 boys’ tennis team consisted of
Lukas Evans, Will Gulbin, Lachlan Carboon,
Tim Seeger and Joel McGennisken.
The Year 7 boys easily accounted for
Wangaratta High School and Catholic College
Wodonga. However, they were pushed right to
the wire by Cathedral College, winning by just
one game after they were even on sets.
After surprisingly losing their first set, Lukas
and Will won their second set in a tie-breaker
to get Galen over the line.
Year 8 Girls Cricket
Congratulations to the Year 8 Girls team who played in the Hume
competition on Thursday 29th October. The girls came third in the
competition, losing the elimination game by only three runs.
Best players were Kendyl White, Chloe Gibson, Annie Creed and Molly
Nolan. Well done to Annie Creed and Sophia McCarthy (Yr 7) who were
invited to try out for the North East Knights. Good luck girls! Thanks to
Julie Nolan and Ben Talarico for managing the team.
Year 8 Girls – 3rd Overall
The Year 8 girls’ tennis team consisted of
Rebecca Johnstone, Mia Dalzotto, Mollie
Shanley, Reagan Tomaino and Teaghan Stone.
The Year 8 girls were hoping to emulate their
success from last year, but it was not to be.
Marian College Myrtleford was by far the
strongest team on the day. The Galen girls did
however have a great win over Wodonga
Middle Years College, Huon.
Year 7 Girls – Champions
The Year 7 girls’ tennis team consisted of
Sophia McCarthy, Georgia Sampson, Charlotte
Proft, Meg Allan and Leah Nolan.
The Year 7 girls had almost identical scores to
their Year 7 male counterparts, winning two
matches quite comfortably, but defeating
Cathedral College by just one game. Like the
boys, it came down to the last set, with Meg
and Charlotte winning in the tie-breaker.
Thanks to Mr and Mrs Hill for selecting and
coaching the teams.
The 3 successful teams will now play in the
Hume competition at the Wangaratta Lawn
tennis club on Thursday 12th November.

Year 8 Girls - Hume Basketball
Game 1: Galen defeated Corryong: 32-8
The girls started the day strong, but there was very little talk
and they made sloppy mistakes in the early part of the game.
Jorja Reidy was shooting well, with a ripper right on the siren.
Gabby Wales started the day all guns blazing, with many
steals, often converting them into Galen points. Galen kept
Corryong to a nil score at half time, with Liv Richards gaining
confidence going into the halftime break and having a few
shots. Jade Elliott took charge in the second half and let her
teammates know where they needed to be and what they
needed to do. Ellie Laffy was popping up plenty of shots with
confidence. The girls played well in a strange game, as there
was too much stopping and starting, which made it hard for
the girls to stick to the pace of the game. An exciting start to
the day, giving the girls the confidence they needed.
Game 2: Galen defeated Shepparton High School: 65-8
The girls started the game with more encouragement and
talking, with Tess Larkin always having something to say
to her teammates, with a huge grin on her face, she also
grabbed plenty of rebounds and played unselfishly. Tilly
Bedendo was also strong in defense, and was backed up by
Jade and Jorja who were already ready to shoot. Galen followed instructions well and changed the flow of play so they
were in charge of the speed. Ellie found herself flying across
the court not once, but twice, and the second time she shot
and scored whilst limping it off. Gabby’s shooting style was
on point and the girls made Galen proud showing
great sportsmanship and camaraderie against a much
weaker opponent.
Game 3 (final): Galen defeated Benalla P-12: 40-14
The final saw Galen come up against a hard opponent, and
they went in cold after barely being challenged in their
previous two games. Tilly and Tess consistently produced
strong rebounds, helping out Jade in defense who was
putting pressure on and showing great leadership. Talking
and encouragement was at an all-time high, especially from
the bench (thanks Liv). In the first half, Benalla made it hard
to score, but with strong defense in the second half, Galen
ran all over a rough opposition. Jorja had a particularly good
game where she took control and played tough. She face
planted the wall and somersaulted out of a block, but never
slowed down once, shooting 29 points.
A big thank you to Eddy Dayman and Ollie Willett for being
ball boys, scorers, timers and pseudo-assistant coaches on
the day.
The girls will be travelling to MSAC for the State competition
on the 17th of November, so wish them luck if you see them
around. Well done ladies, you rock!

Students jump for joy after final Year 12 exam

Ten Galen students were jumping for joy on Wednesday 18th
November as they completed their final VCE exam, on the
final day for VCE exams across the state. Students expressed
that it was particularly difficult to remain focused during
the last week of the exam period, as many of their peers had
already completed all of their exams. However, it was evident
that there was a sense of great relief after the group of ten
had jumped over their final hurdle for VCE Italian. Shortly
after finishing, students discussed plans to celebrate in the
evening and were anticipating a well-deserved break away
from the books. The entire Year 12 2015 cohort will gather
at Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre on Thursday
November 19th for the 2015 Graduation Evening, which
will be a memorable occasion for students, parents and
teachers who have guided them throughout their
secondary years.
