August 2011 Oak Ridge High School PTSO The Wildcat Roar 10th-12th grade New Student Orientation Thursday August 11, 2011 2:00-3:00pm All new students in grades 10-12 are invited and encouraged to attend a special orientation in the ORHS Amphitheatre located across from the Guidance/Counseling Ctr. There will be signs directing them where to go to pick up their schedules. After picking up their schedules, they should proceed to the Amphitheatre. At the orientation, students will receive information about the first day of school, meet administrators, have the opportunity to ask questions, and get a guided tour by ORHS Student-Guides. *Parent Meeting Wednesday, August 10, 2011 8:00am-11:45 am For the Parents/Guardians, our PTSO has planned an Orientation for you as well. After dropping off your 9th grader, plan on gathering in the main lobby and then meeting in the amphitheater for an informative session with PTSO members and ORHS teachers and staff. This will be an informal interactive meeting to discuss topics that will help insure your student’s success at Oak Ridge High School. Topics to be discussed will include: absentee policies; dress code; transportation and school traffic flows; communication with teachers; tutoring services; issues involving drugs and alcohol; technology in the classroom; curriculum; clubs; etc. Parents will have ample opportunity to ask questions during and after the session. ORHS 9th Grade Orientation Wednesday, August 10, 2011 8:00am-11:45 am (Please note change from previous date given earlier at registration/scheduling meetings) All incoming 9th grade students should attend the 9th grade Orientation in order to be well prepared for their first day of high school. Students will pick up their schedules outside of the ORHS Auditorium from 88:20am. After picking up their schedules, students will report to the Auditorium for a brief introductory program from 8:25am to 8:45am. Dr. Jody Goins, ORHS Principal, and the ORHS Student Council President will welcome the new freshmen. After the program, the students will then go through their entire schedules, meeting each of their classes for at least 10 minutes and having the opportunity to meet their teachers. ORHS Student-Guides and administrators will be located throughout the school to assist students in finding their classes and answering questions. At the conclusion of 7th period, students will go back to the Auditorium for instructions for the first day of school and a drawing for prizes. Students will be dismissed at 11:45am to go home. It is very important that 9th graders make every effort to attend this orientation day in order to have the best possible start to their high school experience at Oak Ridge High School. August 2011 Page 3 PTSO Membership Matters The majority of PTSO’s funding comes from membership fees. This is the only time we will ask you for money! We do not have fund-raisers. Please consider giving an amount above the basic membership to help fund the programs PTSO supports. All contributions are tax-deductible. All money raised remains in the school and is used to communicate important information and dates via newsletters, express appreciation to teachers, fund teacher grants, and make contributions to various academic departments and activities. The primary goal of PTSO is communication. Information for a successful school year is provided to you through the newsletters and emails targeted to your child’s grade. Our monthly meetings will be an informal interactive session with Dr. Goins who will answer your questions and provide you information to help your child succeed. We hope you join us! No meeting held in December Page 4 The Wildcat Roar Wike Family Makes Donation To Media Center On May 16, 2011 the ORHS Library received a wonderful dona on for display in the library--a model of a typical house boat on the Amazon---from Eva and Jim Wike in memory of their son, an ORHS student, Joey Wike. Eva and Jim also presented the Librarians with a dona on of $500 to use toward Library materials. The model house boat and dedica on ceremony remarks will be available for viewing in the library when it reopens for the new school year in August. Ms. Roseanne Gardner, a friend of the Wike family, was present at the presenta on and shared words of introduc on. Accep ng the generous gi from the Wike family were the ORHS librarians Sarah Hamilton and Henri Zolyniak. Dr. Goins and Mr. Bryant were pleased to be able to a end as well. ORHS Science Students: “We want our own wetland!” Dedicated ORHS students working for the Clinch River Environmental Studies Organization have spent five hot, sweaty summers monitoring wetlands at other area schools. This fall, led by local wetland specialists and with the help of ORHS parents and students, ORHS will soon have its own wetland to study and enjoy. Here’s the plan: 1) August - ORHS science students will study water runoff and submit designs for a wetland to be placed in the drainage basin between the arena parking lot and the track. 2) September /October- One weekend in early fall, students and parents will cheer on a back hoe operator who will dig out the basin. When the back hoe’s work is done, we will all pitch in to lay a liner and then cover the liner back up with dirt. 3) September/October – Native plants will be transplanted to the wetland site by volunteers. Hope you can join us! We will need lots of help on Back Hoe day especially! Here are some reflections from our students and par- ents on their experiences with wetlands: “When people think wetlands, they think mosquitoes. Wrong! We have yet to find mosquito larvae in a healthy wetland,” says Evan Mitchell, Senior at ORHS, “But we have found a lot of awesome frogs.” “If we have our own wetland, it will be a good way for students to get hands on learning and experience the real life of a field technician.” Nick Wray, Junior at ORHS. “Norris Elementary School put in a beautiful wetland several years ago. It has been a source of joy and learning for so many people in our community. The ORHS band’s annual fruit sale will begin this year on the 21st of October and run until the 18th of November. Fresh tangelos, grapefruit, navels and juice oranges will be available in 10, 20, and 40 pound boxes and 20 or 40 pound boxes of half navels and half grapefruit. All the fruit is fresh picked from Florida groves and trucked to Oak Ridge. Place your order with a band member with check or cash payment or, to pay with a credit card, beginning Oct. 21 visit the band website at http://www.wildband.org and follow the fruit sale link you will find on the right of the home page. Be sure to select a favorite band member when ordering online or leave this choice blank and a band member in your neighborhood will make your delivery. All fruit deliveries will be made in early December, in plenty of time to enjoy and share for the holidays. All the fruit is guaranteed to be good when it is delivered or the band will replace it so be sure to place your order for plenty of winter sunshine. No meeting held in December August 2011 Page 7 The Oak Ridge High School Counseling Department has a policy of requiring three weeks’ notice for requesting letters of recommendation for college applications and scholarships. ALL TEACHERS WILL BE REQUESTING THE SAME LEAD TIME THIS YEAR AS WELL. The following dates (with holidays factored into the time) will be the due dates for providing counselors/teachers with all needed items to write the letters (items needed will be explained to seniors in early September but we require an updated resume and teacher comment forms in order to write recommendations). August 2011 Page 9 TEST INFORMATION ACT Assessment is a national college admission and placement examination with tests covering four content areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning. It is designed to measure high school students’ general educational development (i.e., what they’ve learned in school) and their ability to complete college level work. The ACT 30-minute Writing Test is an optional component. Students will decide whether to take the writing test based on the requirements of the colleges they are considering. Registration packets and preparation materials are available in the Counseling Center. Students may also register online: www.act.org SAT Reasoning Test is a national college admission test that measures critical reading, mathematical reasoning, and writing skills that students have developed over time. Registration and preparation materials are available on the CollegeBoard website and in the Counseling Center. Students may also register online: www.collegeboard.com. SAT Subject Tests are one-hour, primarily multiplechoice, tests that measure your knowledge of particular subjects and your ability to apply that knowledge. Check the requirements of the colleges you’re considering. Many of the more competitive colleges require or recommend one or more Subject Tests for admission or placement. Registration and preparation materials are available on the CollegeBoard website and in the Counseling Center. Students may also register online: www.collegeboard.com. The PLAN is a test administered to all 10th graders at Oak Ridge High School. This is a practice ACT and career interest inventory, which measures a student’s level in English, math, social studies, and science. The Oak Ridge Schools pay for the cost of this exam, which is administered only one day in November. There are no make-up dates if a student misses this test. The PSAT will be administered to interested Sophomores and Juniors in October. This is a practice for the SAT, a college admissions test. For Juniors, the PSAT is the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The PSATmeasures a student’s verbal, math, and writing ability. Students must pre-register to take the PSAT through the ORHS Counseling Center. Register at Open House, Thursday, September 2. The cost of the test is $13 payable to ORHS. Registration will also be held during lunch hours and after school on Tuesday, September 7 and Thursday, September 9. Written materials and test taking hints will be given to students when they register for the test. (Optional for 10th & 11th Graders; National Merit Qualifying Test for 11th.) Gateway Tests: The Tennessee Board of Education requires students to successfully pass Gateway examinations in three subjects – Algebra I, Biology I, and English II – to earn a high school diploma. According to State Board policy, the test grade results shall count not less than 15% of the student’s grade in the semester in which the test was administered. End of Course Exams are not graduation requirements but are very important in the assessment of students’ mastery of concepts before going into Gateway courses. TCAP Writing Assessment is a Tennessee test administered to 4th, 7th, and 11th graders in February each year. It requires students to compose essays in response to a specified prompt within a designated time. Advanced Placement Program gives students an opportunity to take college-level courses and exams while they are still in high school. They may earn credit, advanced placement or both for college – depending on their test scores and the college’s Advanced Placement policies. Teachers of AP courses will notify students about registration procedures and deadlines. College Fair - More than 100 college representatives usually attend, coming from both 2 and 4 year public and private schools.
