INCLEMENT WEATHER - SCHEDULE
CHANGES & CLOSINGS
Inclement weather occasionally causes schools to open late, close
early, or close for the entire day. A decision on whether to close
schools or let them remain open is generally made by 5 a.m. Radio
and television stations are called between 5-6 a.m.

Parents and students are requested not to call schools, school officials, or radio and television stations to find out if schools are being
closed. It is essential that these telephone lines be kept open to enable schools and stations to receive notification about school closings. Parents may call 703. 791.2776 to hear a recorded message on school closing information, visit the School Division
Web page at www.pwcs.edu, turn to PWCS-TV on Comcast
Cable channel 18 or Verizon Channel 36, (watch PWCS-TV on
the Internet), or sign up for PWCS E-news on the Web page.
For more details about the school closing policies during inclement weather go to School Closing Information.
A decision to close or open schools in cases of severe weather
is based on the condition of the roads and the weather forecast at
the time the decision is made. Weather can deteriorate or improve
between the time the decision is made and the time children would
normally leave for school. Road conditions may look normal in one
area of the county but may be hazardous in another area.
Occasionally individual schools must close because of other
emergencies, such as power outages. Efforts will be made to notify
parents and the public. However, parents should plan in advance to
have a place for their children to stay in case schools are closed
early.

7th Annual Science Fairs
Come join the 7th & 8th grade students on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 and
the 6th grade students on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 in the cafeteria to
experience for yourself premier science fair projects created by our talented
students. Again this year, there should be over 350 projects covering 14
scientific categories at both of these science fairs.
If you were a judge last year, I will be contacting you later in the year asking
for your assistance again. If you would like to be a judge, no experience is
necessary and all the training materials will be provided. Volunteers for nonjudging tasks are also needed. Please feel free to contact me at
[email protected] if you would like to help out with our science fairs.
Additional information about both science fairs can be found on the BRMS
School Fusion website.
Thanks in advance,
John R. Trout, M.Ed.

Olweus Bullying Prevention Program
In November, Olweus class meetings focused on diversity issues and “cliques.”
On November 19, 2008, students participated in “Mix It Up at Lunch Day!” Students were asked to step out of their comfort zone and take a new seat at lunch.
Our students did a great job. Thank you to our Eagle Ambassadors and MAC
Committee for helping out with the event. Olweus would also like to thank our
Dance, Cheer, and Step teams for their great performances.
In December, Olweus class meetings will focus on goal setting and random acts
of kindness.
8th Grade Goes Medieval
The 8th grade has planned its annual field trip to Medieval Times for April 17,
2009. All 8th grade students who meet the behavioral requirements (no referrals
after March 2, 2009) are invited to attend. We will take private coaches to
Hanover, Maryland. Lunch is included in the cost, as well as a very informative
and entertaining show. This experience enhances students’ learning in their social
studies, science and language arts classes. The cost of the field trip is $55.00 per
student. Parents interested in chaperoning should contact their child’s advisory
teacher. More information will be available in February. Watch for it!

Guidance News
It’s hard to believe, but we are quickly approaching interim time again. Many of you have already registered
and received your EduLink password so that you can monitor your child’s progress on line. If you notice your
child’s grades slipping, the first point of contact should be the teacher through email. The classroom teacher
can give you specific information about how you can best help and exactly what kind of problem is occurring.
If you feel the problem cannot be resolved after talking to the teacher, please contact your grade level counselor so that we can assist you.
Parents of 8th graders, please continue to monitor the dates of the Specialty Program’s information night.
These informational meetings are the best way to help you determine which high school is best for your child.
As always, the deadline for application to Specialty Programs is February 15. You must submit an application
for a Specialty Program even if that program is at your base high school. Ms. Walker and Dr. Stone will continue to be available to advise our 8th graders during the high school scheduling process. More information will
be available in the next newsletter about specific dates that we will be doing high school scheduling. All of our
counselors and counselors from Battlefield High School will be available to make scheduling easy for our students. Scheduling will take place in early February.

NATIONAL HANDWASHING WEEK: December 7-13, 2008
Remember, the power to reduce or prevent the spread of illness is in your hands!! Good hand washing is the best way to avoid spreading illness-causing viruses and bacteria. Bull Run Middle
School offers hand sanitizer in the cafeteria for student use. Parents are welcome to send hand wipes or
gel for their student’s use or a supply for the classroom to share. Remind your students to wash their
hands well and often!
Here are a few other tips to help you weather the cold and flu season:
·
·
·
·
·
·
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as a general rule. Germs must have access into your body
in order to make you sick-your skin and mucous membranes are a great barrier.
Treat mild cold/congestion symptoms prior to, or after school hours as often as possible.
Students should be kept at home until they are fever-free (without medication) for 24hrs. Students
who are coughing constantly or unable to contain nasal drainage should also be at home.
Extra fluid is essential to hydrate the body and help resist illness: a good rule of thumb is to calculate
½ of body weight in pounds and drink that many ounces of (non-caffeine) fluid each day to stay adequately hydrated. More water is necessary when exercising.
Extra rest will keep your immune system functioning and help you fight illness.
When reporting an absence, please let the school office staff know your student’s symptoms: upper
respiratory (cough/cold, pneumonia), flu-like illness (fever, body aches), gastro-intestinal illness
(nausea/vomiting/diarrhea), or other illness. This helps us to track the frequency of certain types of
illness present in our student population.
This winter, enjoy the cold weather, stay active and have Healthy, Happy Holidays!!

PTSO News December / January 2008-09
Bingo was a blast! If you missed it, please plan on attending the next one in March. We had a lot of fun and
won some really great prizes! Many thanks to Debbie Hobar for chairing this event, and to the many volunteers that helped. A job well done!
Spirit Nights at Cold Stone Creamery have brought in nearly $300 already this year! Our next two spirit
nights are December 3 and January 7. Come on by between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. for a sweet treat!
New Spirit Nights are coming for Chili’s in Manassas and Five Below in Gainesville. Watch for these
dates to be announced.
Get ready for basketball season by purchasing your seat cushions and noisemakers through the PTSO. The
PTSO will be selling concessions at the first Girl’s Basketball home game on December 8. Come out to
cheer on the team!
On December 16-18, the PTSO and the Builders Club will have items for sale at the annual Holiday Sale during all lunches all three days. The PTSO will have some nice jewelry, as well as other items for sale. The
Builders Club will be selling the very popular bottle angels. All reasonably priced for the students. If you
would like to volunteer, please contact us at [email protected].
The SpiritWear sales have been great! Thank you for your orders and your support. SpiritWear make great
gifts, too! Order now to be sure you have it in time. Either pick up an order form from the PTSO bulletin
board in the foyer, or download it at www.BullRunEaglesPTSO.org. Please remember that all items come in
adult sizes only.
New car magnets are in! They look really nice and are a great size. The cost is only $5 and they can be ordered by downloading the SpiritWear order form at www.BullRunEaglesPTSO.org.
Have you seen how many different stores you can get gift cards for at www.glscrip.com? You can now go to
this website, pick out what gift cards you want … no limits … and order by emailing Shannon Theal at
[email protected]. Deliver your payment to the school and she’ll place your order and contact you when it
is ready. We would really like to see this become our main fundraiser, but we need you to use it for it to be
successful. Please visit our website frequently for updates and order forms. (My family is traveling to Texas
for Christmas so, instead of shipping all our gifts this year, we are buying gift cards and taking them with us!)
Do you shop at Giant, Bloom or Harris Teeter? If so, please make sure you have designated Bull Run Middle School for their different bonus programs. For more information and other ways you can help, check out
the PTSO website.
The total amount of Box Tops submitted were 2,815, which means $281.50 for BRMS. Please note that we
cannot submit mangled or expired Box Tops. We will continue collecting throughout the school year, so please
keep sending them in! Get your neighbors, grandparents, aunts and uncles, to help you get more. Box Tops
for Education seem to be on a lot of the items we use for cooking over the holidays … don’t throw them away!
By the way, one of you submitted a foreign stamp, so if you’ve been hunting all over and can’t find it, check
with us.
Our Teacher Appreciation Committee has been letting our teachers know how much we appreciate them
with a special monthly treat. January 26 is designated for the Teacher Appreciation Brunch. Volunteers are
needed to help serve the teachers on that day. Also, if you would like to provide food, or monetary donations
toward the purchase of food, please contact Ruth Castor at [email protected].

PTSO News Dec / Jan 2008-09 (cont.)
Your contributions to help stock SERVE’s shelves have been wonderful! As of this writing (we still have
several days of collecting left), the students have reached 72% of the goal to see Mr. Bixby slimed. Date
and time of sliming to be determined when goal is met. It looks like Mr. Addington will be off the hook
this time – unless we can get 3,500 more items in by November 26th!
In November, the PTSO purchased and delivered two new picnic tables for the students to eat on outdoors.
The tables were purchased from Osbourn Park High School where they are hand made by students.
Our Innisbrook fundraiser sales (to date – we may not have all the statistics yet) were $7580.86. Well
done, BR students! We’ll give you a better update later. Watch for pick up dates via School Fusion.
The next PTSO meetings are scheduled for December 8 and January 12. We begin at 6:30 p.m. in the BRMS
Library. Please remember that students and parents are encouraged to attend. Come see what is happening
and how you can get involved!
If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please contact PTSO President, Gail Burns, at [email protected].
May you have a blessed holiday season!

An easy way to support Bull Run Middle School is to join the Giant A+ Bonus
Bucks program. Each time a customer uses their Giant Bonus
Card, our school earns A+ BonusBucks. A+_BonusBucks convert
to cash each month. The cash we receive is used to support our
educational programs. This year’s program runs from October 3,
2008 through April 2, 2009.
Please go to the following website to register: www.giantfood.com/aplus or you
may complete a designation card at a Giant Customer Service
counter. You must register and designate our school each year.
If you registered last year you must re-designate our school for
this year’s program. If you have children in other schools, you
may register up to 3 schools. Please take a few minutes to support our school.
