Maverick Connections
Celebrations February 2014
At Meadowdale, We Call it the 12th Mav!
A Big Win!
Jazz Band I competed in the longest running jazz
festival—The Clark College Jazz Festival—in Vancouver, WA. It is considered to be the premier regional jazz festival in its 48th year of providing
competitive jazz bands a venue in which to perform for judges. This year, Jazz I played their way
through the preliminaries and into the evening
finals where the three top bands of the day were
selected to compete further to determine first,
second, and third place. At the end of the evening
and in front of an enthusiastic crowd, Meadowdale’s Jazz I, under the direction of Mr. Hawke,
came in first place in division AAA ahead of Mead
High School and Mt. Spokane High School both
from Spokane. Ori Levari was also recognized as
one of the outstanding soloists for his piano feature on “Wee Small Hours.” Outstanding work
everyone! You make Meadowdale proud.
Way to Go Hawks!
A Heartfelt Success
On February 13, Nick of Time completed a full day of
heart screenings here at MHS. They screened a record breaking 555 young hearts finding eight students
who needed immediate follow-up and eleven who
will need future follow-ups.
Nick of Time and MHS would like to thank…
 The Truax family for organizing this day
 The MHS junior class for their spirit and support
 Larry French and Rina Maile Redrup for feeding
the over 100 volunteers here that day as well as
soliciting donations
 Dave Olsen and Anthony’s Café for the delicious
chowder and Joselyn and Eric for serving
 Sue Burns and Beth Marriott for organizing and
hosting the day
 And, all our volunteers who care
about our kids!
SkillsUSA Photo Contest and 2nd Place Winner
Photography by Shane Hayes
Scholarship Winner
Congratulations Kevin Ng who earned the Susan Russell Scholarship for best portfolio submission by a senior. Kevin won a Gold Key for
the portfolio and his work will be advancing to
the national contest in New York City. In addition to all the glory, Kevin will also receive
$1,000 towards his tuition in the fall of 2014.
You can check out Kevin’s work which will be
featured in his own section at the Schack Art
Center. Read more details by clicking on
Schack Art Center.
Congratulations to Mackenzie
Jones, Kendra Shaw, Victor Lee and
Shane Hayes for their participation
in the Puget Sound SkillsUSA Photo
Contest on Saturday, February 8th.
Five schools sent their top photography students to this yearly event.
This year Shane Hayes, MDHS senior, earned second place in the contest. The competition included three on-site tests: editing a
damaged photo, photographing a moving subject with manual focus and exposure, and using photos and text to create
a mock shoe advertisement. The students also brought two
of their photos to be judged based on image quality and
technical skill. Shane will continue by competing at the state
contest in April. Awesome work!
Diaper Drive Results
FCCLA Club (Family Career and Consumers of
America) and Child Development did a fourteen
day diaper drive to benefit PICC (Pediatric Interim Critical Care) in Kent. PICC is a nonprofit organization that helps babies suffering from inutero addictions, and withdrawals of prescription and non-prescription drugs. They also assist the mothers and monitor the babies twenty
-four hours a day for as long as the baby needs
it. Currently, there are ten babies receiving
care at the center in Kent. During the fourteen
days, Meadowdale High students and FCCLA
collected over 2,000 diapers. It is amazing
what Meadowdale High School students do for
others. Ms. Sukraw says, “I am so grateful to be
a part of it all.” Good work Mavs!

Thanks for donating your time Mavs!
Kudos to Ms. Kakar
S-T-A-T-E
For some time now, Shugla Kakar has been helping to
organize our Cultural Heritage Celebration on February 20th. Cultural Heritage Night brings together
members in our community with different backgrounds to celebrate music, art, food and customs
from around the world. But, different from past
years, Shugla went beyond helping with the event.
Recently, she devised a proposal to provide henna
tattoos at the event for a small donation. All of the
money raised will be donated to the ELL program to
offset costs for seniors graduating this Spring. When
ELL students present a need to their teachers, there
will be a pool of money to help pay for caps, gowns,
tassels, grad night tickets, and however else the money can be stretched. What a thoughtful idea and a
wonderful young woman!
Let’s all give a big cheer to our Maverick Cheerleaders who successfully defended their state title! The
ladies competed shortly after twelve noon at the
University of Washington. During the performance, the team dropped a stunt creating some
doubts in the girls’ minds, but after watching the
performance on audience members’ cameras, everything else was perfect. They nervously waiting
until after 6:00 P.M. to hear themselves announced
as winners! The girls competed in the 3A NonTumbling group against five other teams. MHS
girls showed crisp, sharp movements which beat
the second place team by seven and a half points
which is a big margin at the state level. Congratulations to Valerie Brayman, Brianna Buduan,
Nikala Buslach, Quinn Cassidy, Angela Cho, Emily
Flick, Laura Gedeon, Jacqueline Hill, Cassie Hummel, Alexandra Jensen, Hailey Jensen, Shannon
Karnoski , Sara Kim, Emma Parker, Chelsea Van
Landeghen, McKenna Welch, and coaches Kimberly Berry and Alleshia Goulder.
The Herald Highlights MHS Senior
If you’ve already met Chikodi Ezeokeke, then you’ve
probably been rubbed by his positive attitude. But if
you haven’t been lucky enough to know Chikodi,
then read the linked article and prepare to be inspired by what this senior can teach us. It’s a great
reminder for “whenever your number’s called.”

Boys’ Bowling Team took third in
their division at the state competition. Congratulations guys on a
strikingly fabulous season.
Thank You Parents
MHS would like to thank all of the parents who took the
