WICKHAM CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS
Friday 27th May 2011
Dear Parents and Carers
Our first half of the summer term ends today and we have certainly had a busy time in school since Easter.
Children are enjoying their weekly swimming lessons and the extra opportunities to work, play and eat lunch
outside which the warmer weather brings. We have also had a number of workmen in school this week as
Years 3 and 6 have had new carpets laid and our intruder alarm and CCTV systems have been upgraded. Our
children have enjoyed watching the work progress and are particularly pleased with the effect the carpets
have had on their classroom environment.
Year 6 Residential Visit
Year 6 have spent this week at the East Dene Centre on the Isle of Wight and we look forward to
welcoming them home this evening and hearing all about their learning experiences after half term.
Year 4 and 5 Challenge Week
Throughout this week Years 4 and 5 have worked together on a number of special challenges. They made a
presentation in Celebration Assembly yesterday about their team names, learning experiences and favourite
activities. They have spent a great deal of the week using our fantastic outdoor learning environment and
have had great fun.
Wickham Fair
Year 5 visited Wickham Fair last Friday as part of our project on gypsy, romany and traveller cultures.
They found the visit very interesting and used the experience to write reports and draw pictures of this
important event in Wickham’s history. We hope to share their project work with the Hampshire EMTAS
team who co-ordinate specialist provision across the county. The local press were at Wickham Fair and I
know Year 5 enjoyed seeing themselves on the Meridian television news that night.
Primary Engineers Challenge
Year 5 visited Swanmore College of Technology for their annual
Primary Engineers Challenge. The children made model cars from kit
and raced them against each other. They had a great time and are very
proud of their work.
Pirate Day at the Submarine Museum Visit
Year 1 had a fantastic Pirate Day at the Submarine Museum in Gosport to support their learning in class.
The children were told that submariners have traditionally been referred to as pirates by other sailors and
they enjoyed learning about their flags and customs. The children took part in a range of activities and had
a chance to view HMS Alliance.
Year R Staunton Country Park
Year R enjoyed a lovely day at Staunton Country Park this week learning about animals and plants. They
spent the day exploring the park and came back buzzing with excitement about the animals they had seen.
We hope you all enjoy a restful half term next week. Children may like to logon to Wizkid during the holiday
to use their class activities pages or visit one of the recommended websites. You may also like to take a
look at the maths calculation strategies we presented at our information event last term which are now
available to download from our Wizkid site.
Best wishes
