Hard to believe 1995 is almost over and it has been ~lte a year. Interest in the Whitlock family
research has grown this year to the point where I had to really struggle to keep up with all the new
material that flowed in. We have over 130 subscribe is and there were over 500 different items in
the additions lists in 1995!! I thought I had done a lot of cataloguing this year!! Unfortunately
there are still a few items I have not yet been able to catalogue and hopefully will get a chance to
do so after Christmas.
I also did a lot more travelling this year in my job so the combination of more material and less
time to process it caused a few delays. I appreciate your patience when from time to time I was
not able to answer your requests as promptly as in the past.
As usual the amount of material listed in this issue co~tinues to be substantial. There continues to
be a good number of Whitlock references on the Bulletin Boards and computer services. I was
very interested to see a reference to John Whitlock (d~659) of Connecticut listed that was new to
us (X2047). I thought we had all of the Salem court teferences but this one was new to me and
makes me wonder if more have been missed.
I
I was particularly happy to receive a letter from Patridia Root, a descendant of the Langtree,
Devon, Wihtlocks and my own part of the family. Hopefully I have lots of material Pat will be
interested in and I am looking forward to adding the retail on the Ohio lines that I have not been
able to trace so far.
The West Virginia detail from Chris Shrum (X2064) Is all new to me and this is some of the
material not yet catalogued. It looks like a terrific collection and I am hoping will add a few
connections to families already in the files. Also the !naterial from William Lindsey on the
Whitlocks of Wythe Co., Virginia (X2066-70) is deta I that will add greatly to this part of the
family.
The collection of personal letters (X2076) received from Lorraine Rogers going back to the
California gold rush days will add considerable detail to the New York families and hopefully
provide several interesting articles for the newsletter.
Those interested in Pitton, Wiltshire research will be !leased to see we have a new researcher in
that area. Quintin D.L. White's charts (X2096-97) ad great new information to that part of the
family.
Glenn Whitlock's collection of South Carolina census and other material (RI223-26; RI236-41)
filled in some long time blanks in the South Carolina families. Marian Downum's Connecticut
source material (RI227-34) added copies of several Cpnnecticut wills that were quoted but copies
had never been in the files. Marian's information from the Massachusetts records gives some
terrific detail on how the assets of Loyalists were dea~t with following the Revolution. The
material Marian sent in relates to the family connected to the Whitlock Golf and Country Club in
Hudson Heights, Quebec. It indicates this family like!fllY
descends from the Connecticut line and
more specifically that the John Whitlock who went to Lenox, Massachusetts was likely born in the
1720's, the son of John and Abigail (Adams) Whitloc . No proof yet.
I was somewhat surprised to receive a 12 page broch e (RI232) from my own national office in
Ottawa involving a recipe booklet and co-op campaign with Whitlock's restaurant in Toronto!
Our newspaper clipping files took a major jump in th~ past few weeks with the addition of Jerry
Gower's collection of Calais Maine clippings (NP335~342) and Earl Gates collection from his
grandmother Spray's scrapbook (NP346-365) sent in by Mark Whitlock.
In a previous Newsletter I asked if anyone knew Whi~h family Whitlock A venue in Marietta,
Georgia was named for. I recently received a letter from Earl H. Johnson of Kennesaw, Georgia in
Whitlock Family ~ewsletter
Vol.14 No. 4

which he mentions 1/1 have recently copied several pages of information on the life of Milledge
Whitlock for whom Whitlock Avenue in Marietta, Georgia is named". I will be very interested to
see this material. I show Milledge Whitlock born in <Georgiain Apr. 1832, married to Annie E. ??
b.Nov.1839.
I
A lot of new data. My thanks to everyone for the material they have added.
Enclosed with this issue is the Association statement ~OWing us in a fairly healthy financial
position. I see no reason to raise our subscription rat ~and will leave it at $10 per year. Renewals
for 1996 are enclosed and I hope each of you will be willing to support us in the coming year.
This year saw us reach our goal with the Whitlock Tomb fund. We had aimed for £500 and we
were able to send our donation a few months ago. :r1e booklet I wrote for this project continues to
sell and from time to time we should be able to add tp the repair fund for the Memorial at Fawley
in Buckinghamshire. I have not heard from the paril Council recently so am not sure how their
fund raising is proceeding.
One item on the statement that has seen a fairly large jump this year is the miscellaneous sales.
Following my trip to Montreal I was able to arrange IQ sell some items from the Whitlock Golf and
Country Club. I hope to receive a list eventually but I do have one extra large sweat-shirt ($95)
and a brass divot repair tool ($17) available. I also purchased a copy of Ruth Spalding's book The
Improbable Puritan about the life of Sir Bulstrode ~telocke
(1605-1675) ($17). The book is
second hand but in extremely good condition includin'g the dust cover. I will let each of these
items go on a first come first serve basis but if anyorte else is interested in these items let me know
and I will try to fill the orders eventually. The bookS will come available from time to time and if
I .know who is. interested I can advise you frior to htfchase. I still get orders for the Whitlock Car
pictures from time to time and they are stil $4 eac ,f anyone IS interested m them.
You will notice in the Miscellaneous lists there are I/CMAILI/ items. These are items taken from
the Compuserve system. Our address is 102220,615 ~nd while I received quite a bit of mail in the
begirming I do not appear to have had any messages ~ince. I do pick-up any Whitlock related
items that appear. If someone has the expertise and fould like to do so it might be interesting to
look into setting us up with a home page on the Interet.
Several projects continue including the census files ahd the Will Register. We have over 1,000
wills in our register and while I have not had the timl to add much new to the census files I have
kept up to date with the material that has come in. ~~ere are only a couple of US states left to do
and hopefully I will be able to complete them in the Icoming year. Pam Shelton-Anderson has now
also done the complete update of the IGI including ~e huge British section. I have not been able
to do the comparison to add this information to the c/omputer but have the material ready when I
can get to It.
This issue also records the passing of two long time ~tlock
researchers, Elaine Radosevic who
died August 25 and Ralph Whitlock who died October 22. I have written a short piece about each
of them.
I
My thanks to all who shared their finds this year anq especially to those who went out of their way
to add missing data for the benefit of others. All aPf.reciated. Best wishes for the holiday season
and the coming year.

RALPH WHITLOCK 1914-1995
Listed in the clippings section of this issue are two items advising the passing of one of the best
known and loved Whitlocks, Ralph Whitlock of Winterslow, Wiltshire. Ralph died October 22,
1995.
My association with Ralph goes back to
1967 prior to commencing my research into
the Whitlock family. I was 17 and saw
Ralph's name in The Field magazine and
decided to write to him and ask what he
knew about the origins of the Whitlock
family. I still have his reply of July 24,
1967. Ralph's support and encouragement is
what lead to my interest in family history
and thus eventually to the Whitlock Family
Association.
At age 16 Ralph started writing about Pitton
village events for the local paper and by
1932 was writing a weekly column of
country notes for the Western Gazette
group. This continued unbroken well into
the 1990's, over 60 years. His first article in
The Field was in 1944 and he was their
farm editor for more than 30 years. By
1945 he had a spot on the BBC radio and
was soon in demand as a commentator on
agricultural and rural issues. He also had a
regular spot on Children's Hour which later
moved to television.
Ralpb Whitlock
From 1968 to 1973 Ralph worked as the agricultural consultant to the Methodist Missionary
Society and this took him to places such as Africa, India and the Caribbean. His talks on how to
grow more food with what you have available were full of practical rural-sense ideas. I still use
his idea of planting potatoes at the bottom of a barrel and slowly filling it with earth as the plant
grows. You end up with potatoes all the way up the stocks!!
Ralph wrote once asking my wife and I what we thought of his emigrating to America when he
retired as his son lived near us in British Columbia and he had a daughter in Los Angeles. After
considerable thought we wrote back and advised against leaving England. While he and his wife,
Hilda might have a bit easier time in America his whole life had been built around the English
country experience. We felt he would miss it terribly and as his income was derived from his
writing the opportunities would surely diminish as it became known he lived in America.
Ralph and Hilda settled near Salisbury in Winterslow, a few miles from Pitton where he was born.
We visited them there several years ago when our daughter, Meghan was still quite young. Ralph
showed us into the sitting room and Meghan noticed the floor to ceiling bookcase by the door that
Ralph said were his books. "My Dad has lots of books, too" Meghan told Ralph. The difference
of course was that Ralph had written everyone of them, over 100.
While Ralph was sad to see the countryside change he was not nostalgic for the past. The days of
the Corn Laws, Enclosures, oppressive Game Laws and agricultural depression were clearly
understood by Ralph and he was happy to see the village of his youth a vibrant and alive place,
albeit a vastly different one.
Ralph will be missed by all those who came to know him. His legacy will be the vast record of
rural history he set down for both present and coming generations to look back on. He has left us
an open window through which we will forever be able to see the day to day lives of our ancestors.

WHITLOCKS OF LENOX, MASSACHUSETTS
Bit by bit we are piecing together the family of John Whitlock, the Loyalist whose land became the
Whitlock Golf and Country Club in Hudson Heights, Quebec. The latest material sent in by
Marian Downum sheds additional light on this family and it is interesting to see how the court
transferred their assets. It appears John Whitlock and his two brothers-in-law, James Keeler and
Daniel Wilson all left Lenox in the 1780's and their estates were processed in the Court at
Stockbridge in 1781. None are shown as deceased but are shown as "conspirator" or "absentee".
John Whitlock's two sisters, Sarah Wilson and Abigail Keeler appear to have stayed in Lenox.
Listed below are some of the extracts Marian made that give a bit of the flavour of the time.
"at a Court holden at Stockbridge within & for the County of Berkshire on 10 March 1781 before
the Hon. Timothy Edwards, Esq. Judge of said Court. Power of Agency on the estate of John
Whitlock Jun. late of Lenox absentee is given to Elias Willard Junr of said Lenox & bond is taken
of the said Elias for the faithful discharge of said trust - as on file. And Charles Dibble, John
Stoughton & Jonnah Churchill -- all of Lenox are appointed & ordered to appraise in lawful money
of the Commonwealth all the estate where in the said John was seized in the aforesaid County at
the time of absenting himself."
Similar documents were processed for James Keeler and Daniel Wilson. Marian mentions there
was a hard to read petition to the Court for Sarah Wilson to have some bedding & household stuff
for Daniel's estate. There is a note that Widow Abigail Keeler is permitted to choose £10 worth of
household stuff from the estate of her husband, James Keeler. There were several items relating to
debts paid to creditors of each of the "Conspirators & Absentees".
"Inventory of the estate of John Whitlock Junr late of Lenox, Absentee taken by the subscribers,
Charles Dibble, John Stoughton, Jonna Churchill, 90 acres of land £262-0-0. Elias Willard, agent
reported that the whole of the estate of John Whitlock Junr was insufficient to pay his debts. The
Court ordered the three subscribers to record and examine the claims against John Whitlock Junr."
"Inventory of the estate of James Keeler, late of Lenox, Absentee - 150 acres of land £562-0-0,

"Inventory of the estate of Daniel Wilson, late of Lenox, Absentee - 20 acres unimproved land £50

There is no mention the fate of any of the three, just that they were conspirators or absentees. Also
no reference to property being confiscated. Very interesting material and our thanks to Marian for

ELAINE RADOSEVIC 1921-1995
Elaine's husband John wrote to advise us that she passed away August 25, 1995. I came to know
Blaine through Tom Roach when he was publishing the Whitlock Gleanings Newsletter and
working on the East Tennessee families. There was an elusive Jeremiah Whitlock that Elaine was
trying to track down.
Always willing to share her finds and keep an eye out for stray Whitlocks, I will miss Elaine's
letters.

WHITELOCKS OF LEEDS, YORKSHIRE
The following was sent in by Ray Skinner and is extracted from a guide to the Leeds, Yorkshire
Archives, published in 1988 to celebrate their 50th anniversary.
Pg.9 "Briggate still houses one of the city's finest pubs, another which claims to be the oldest, and
others which are linked with the theatre ....Many of these pubs have long since vanished but
Whitelocks remains, much changed but none the worse for that.
This splendid tavern stands in Turk's Head Yard, its original name when first licensed in 1715. In
1880 it was bought by the Whitelock family and in 1886 rebuilt in its present form with little
changing since then. One wonders what an impression it must have had on the artistic and
business community of Leeds that provided much of its trade. Later it was the first place in the
city to have electric lighting and an electric clock. Ironically at that time, Charles Francis Tetley,
grandson of Joshua and a Lord Mayor of Leeds, was offered a free trial of electricity in his
Headingley home and refused it.
John Betjeman enjoyed the atmosphere of Whitelocks. He described it as '...the Leeds equivalent
of Fleet Street's Old Cheshire Cheese and far less self-conscious, and does a roaring trade. It is the
very heart of Leeds.' It calls itself the 'First City Luncheon Bar and it is this function that
continues. The yard, entered at either end, is long and narrow and this is reflected inside with the
long, marble-topped bar. Long-lost breweries are commemorated here - Joule and Son of Stone in
Staffordshire, Vaux and Company of Macauley Street in Leeds - and on etched mirrors soup and
bread is offered for sale for a penny! The original trade mirrors are just one element of this grand
pub with its art nouveaux glasswork, cast-iron tables fitting snugly into comfortable settles and the
general ambience of a century ago. It is, naturally enough, a listed building of special architectural
interest.
