Semi Finals - Southern Football League
FINALS WEEK 2 Semi Finals 7 - 8 September 2013 www.sfl.com.au Official Publication of the Southern Football League - ABN 81 295 351 439 SOUTHERN FOOTY 2013 What’s happening at SFLHQ? Mark Seymour, SFL Chairman THE SFL Board believe one of THE most important things for the long term good of the League is stability and continuity in its administration. The lynchpin of the administration is the Chief Executive’s position. In August last year, after a thorough search for a replacement for Wayne Holdsworth, I had the pleasure of announcing that former SFL Football Operations Manager, David Cannizzo had been appointed as the new CEO. I am sure you will all agree that David’s past twelve months have been exceptional as, not only has he maintained the previous good work of Wayne, he has also placed his own mark on the position and established his own connections with the clubs, media, sponsors, local and state government and other SFL stake holders. He has been instrumental in negotiating new sponsorship and supplier agreements which have brought greater returns to the League. There has been demonstrated growth and progress in the League since David commenced in his role. One of the priorities for the Board in 2013 has been to improve the League’s marketing and communications and to this end David has overseen the employment of a Business Development Manager, has taken steps to improve the coverage by social media and has been instrumental in the development and roll out of SFL Live. Given how he has performed in the role, the Board were unanimous in deciding that a long term commitment should be offered to our CEO. Accordingly, a three year contract was offered to David and I am most pleased to announce that he has accepted the offer and signed a new contract. The length of the contract will allow him to consolidate initiatives introduced in 2013 and also allow the League to continue the steady improvement it has shown in recent times. I have no hesitation as Chairman in saying David is without doubt, one of the best young sports administrators I have had the pleasure of working with. The Board is confident that he is the right person to continue to re-establish the SFL as a force in local football. I would also like to take the time to speak about one of the Board’s major initiatives for 2013 – SFL Live. I strongly believe SFL Live will be a fun, interactive and engaging point of difference for all football fans connected with the Southern Football League. It is also part of the future of the game as it allows the user to interact on a number of platforms to access SFL content. The SFL Strategic Plan emphasises promoting the success of the League and using media to its maximum capability, engaging and motivating volunteers and fans, and developing interest in the League and the game. SFL Live is a significant investment by the SFL and a worthwhile initiative as it will provide players, officials and fans the opportunity to engage with the SFL and our greater community on match day in real time via SFL Live. I commend SFL Live to anybody who has an interest in the SFL and wants to keep up with what is happening both on and off the field. 2nd Floor, Junior Development Building, Moorabbin Reserve, Linton Street Chief Executive Officer: David Cannizzo PO Box 1018, Moorabbin VIC 3189 Football Record: maree.heverin@sfl.com.au Football Operations: Matt Duck P: 9553 5644 | F: 9553 5655 Tribunal Venue: SFL Headquarters, Linton Street, Moorabbin, (Melways Ref 77 F6) visit www.sfl.com.au OFFICIAL PUBLISHER OF THE SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE RECORD “SOUTHERN FOOTY” www.sfl.com.au | 1 SOUTHERN FOOTY 2013 Match of the Round Broadcast DIVISION 1: 07.09.2013 Proudly brought to you by: Leader Newspapers, Sandown Function Centre, 88.3 Southern FM St Pauls vs East Brighton Springvale Reserve Newcomen Road Melway Ref: 79 B2 DIVISION 1: 08.09.2013 Dingley vs Chelsea Heights HOME CLUB FROM ALL GROUNDS MUST ENTER LIVE SCORES VIA FOOTYWEB WITH 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 AND FULL TIME SCORES. East Brighton took on Dingley in the Qualifying final and the result was the first surprise of the weekend. After a reasonably close first quarter the Vampire defence increased their pressure and the midfield started asserting their dominance on the game. Tait Sabec and Mark Jamieson were key players for the Vampires down back while captain Ben Douthie and Coach Barry Hope stood up to fill in the hole left by star midfielder Dean Williamson. Up the other end it was Matt Jamieson and Douthie who provided the scoring punch kicking 10 of the Vampires 13 goals. For the Dingoes, Darren Andrews played a solid game, helping restrict Dean Francis to one major and Tony Lavars provided a lot of run from half back. Two old rivals came together in the Elimination Final as Chelsea Heights took on St Kilda City. With the wind becoming a major influence on the game, both teams tried to take advantage. After wasting a strong start to the game with 9 behinds in the first quarter, Chelsea Heights were on the back foot heading into the final quarter. Though leading by 12 points midway through quarter, the Saints had the wind in their favour and they took advantage. Kicking 2 goals to square the game in the final 3 minutes including one with 27 seconds to go, the game went into extra time. And that’s where 4 | SFL RECORD 2013 / Jason Barbin the game turned. Heading into the final 5 minutes of extra time, the Saints held a 12 point lead and with the win in their favour the win looked assured. Enter Luke Manders. After Chelsea Heights brought the margin to 5 points, the Heighters leading goal kicker kicked the winning goal with 11 seconds left in the game to lead the Heighters to victory and keep their premiership hopes alive. is in superb form coming off a 6 goal haul and will take advantage of the attention Dean Francis will get from the Dogs backline. It will be interesting to see if returning midfielders Dean Williamson and Jay Bruno match up against each other as both players have match winning ability. Hard to split these two teams but it should be close. With week one of the finals out of the way 4 teams lock heads, each fighting to play in that last day in September. Dingley vs Chelsea Heights St Pauls vs East Brighton Previous Meetings: Round 2 – St Pauls defeated East Brighton 17.17.119 to 9.6.60 Round 11 – East Brighton defeated St Pauls 7.13.55 to 6.8.44 This is the match we have all been waiting for. 1st vs 2nd for a spot in the 2013 grand final. With both teams expecting key players to return from injury, this game could be one for the ages. East Brighton will be looking for their 14th win in a row and are currently playing their best football for the year. This will hold them in good stead against a St Pauls side who had the week off. It will be interesting to see if the week off will help or hinder the Bulldogs who will be relying on key forward Luke James to get on top early. Vampire defender Liam Bowman should get first crack at the gun forward and he should have plenty of help from the likes of Tait Sabec and Nathan Stewart. Vampire half forward Matt Jamieson East Brighton by 9 points. Previous Meetings: Round 9 – Chelsea Heights defeated Dingley 8.11.59 to 6.9.45 Round 17 – Dingley defeated Chelsea Heights 14.14.98 to 5.10.40 Dingley take on Chelsea Heights in what will be an interesting Semi Final clash. The Dingoes are coming off a comprehensive loss to the Vampires while the Heighters are coming off a come from behind win. The Dingoes should regain Luke Bartholomew from injury while Matt Terech should return for Chelsea Heights. This is a hard contest to judge. Both teams have good midfields that can kick goals, dependable key forwards with good marking ability and solid fullbacks who can easily hold their own. This contest could be run and won in the ruck. The potential battle between Terech and Chris Morgan could be crucial in deciding the winner. The big open spaces at Springvale Reserve will provide for an interesting and entertaining game. Dingley by 15 points. Having won the toss & electing to kick with a gale, we dominated general play but inaccuracy cost us. We were good early in the 2nd against the breeze with big Phil, TJ & Wally standing up against the odds. A couple of late goals through a lack of accountability was disappointing. Although we looked good in patches in the 2nd half and managed to get 3 goals up with 4 minutes to play, City’s credit they kicked the last three of the game to draw level & were having a shot for goal (from 80) to win the game. No score. After a little bit of confusion as to what the coaching staff could or couldn’t do we were sent out to play 5 minutes of extra time each way. 1st half against the wind: 7 points down. We needed a lift from the boys but City drew 1st blood & went 13 points up. Even with Larks giving the coach time updates, it was getting tense to say the least. Enter Manders and Matho! Still not sure how we were able to kick a goal with 24 seconds remaining on the clock. But Manders snapped truly! HEIGHTS WIN BY A POINT! Individually there were some great efforts, Erish (5 goals in his first final ), big Phil (huge all day), Matho again & Wally down back to name a few. Congratulations to City, who were fantastic. This week we get our chance for a little redemption against Dingley. The memory of a couple of weeks ago and the send-off a couple of their supporters gave our players after losing hasn’t, been forgotten. The 2’s had great weather to start the 2013 finals. Was good to be back at Springy which is in good nick. Playing last year’s premiers, who we have great respect for, was going to be a huge challenge. Our boys looked relaxed but ready before the game and started well. It was always going to be a tough day & a 4 1/4, 22 man job was required. SENIORS PREVIEW – St Pauls V East Brighton - Sponsored by Merkon Constructions: A final against our arch rival East Brighton always brings out the ferocious best in both teams. The weather has a real September finals feel about it and the boys are as up and about as you would ever see them. Coach Paul Howroyd has a healthy list to pick from and this week provides a great opportunity to advance straight through to the big one… Bring it on!! ST PAULS crack at showing the other finals contenders what we are really capable of. Some of the positives to come out of the game was the form of on-ballers, Bryce Hayes and Rhys Peet and whilst our backline came under a lot of fire our mainstays in Ben McCarthy, Jack Kreymborg and Ryan Smith all stood up. Sometimes form can desert you but the Shadow predicts a massive turnaround this week and the gathering of some momentum from here on in, it’s the Doggy way… RESERVES Qualifying final V Chelsea Heights - Sponsored by Total Waste Management: Whilst we fielded a good side on paper… unfortunately we couldn’t bring it out onto the park on game day in a very scrappy low scoring affair with Chelsea Heights prevailing by 17 points. On the flip side, having the second chance gives the boys another Under 19’s Elimination final V Dingley Sponsored by the Cushion Lounge: The 19’s did the club and supporters proud with their tenacious 4 quarter performance and registered a 39 point win against our great rival, Dingley. In the hard ball get stakes we had Bobby Carracher leading the way with his trademark kamikaze style and he willed ST KILDA CITY Chelsea Heights pulled away to a four goal lead through the third quarter but some late goals put us within striking distance and we were coming home with the breeze. There were a number of times when the match looked to be almost out of reach but the boys did everything that Gav asked of them and gave all they had by running hard, harassing opponents, crashing packs and pushing to contests. The team was the epitome of the ‘St Kilda City Spirit’. A goal by Declan in the dying minutes had the match tied up at the end of regular time. Last weekend saw the end of our 2013 season and as much as a gut-wrenching loss like that can be difficult to swallow, the fight and tenacity showed by our team was enough to warm the hearts of all City supporters and show that we’ll be a team to be reckoned with in 2014 and beyond. Having lost the toss the first quarter was always going to be tough as we fought against the strong wind and a determined Chelsea Heights side. Our backline worked hard in the face of multiple forward entries and our forwards made the most of limited opportunities. The second quarter was also low-scoring with the wind making things difficult for both sides but we managed to kick two and found ourselves seven points down at the main break. The second half was one of the best contests in the club’s history as we refused to lie down. 14 | SFL RECORD 2013 Although we managed to get the first two goals in the first period of extra time, it wasn’t enough and the Heighters, to their credit, snatched victory from us with the last goal of the game. There were great performers all over the ground with Arvo and Boots leading the way. Everyone played with lots of passion for the jumper, that’s all you can ask for. In the end we got home by 3 goals, so we refocus to a huge game this week facing top side Dingley which we know will be a hard contest. A special thanks to the boys who missed out. Always tough to watch your mates, but very proud how you all supported them. Keep training as things change quickly in footy. PRESENTATION NIGHT: Saturday 12th October 7.30pm. $30 Inc. Classy mids Birdy, Beau, Braggers and Pauly T combined wonderfully well around the stoppages to setup many scoring chances. Down back Jordan Lloyd, Numbers and Dylan Stewart gave us tremendous drive and ran with the footy to break the lines on several occasions. Up forward Stubbsy, Gluten, Whispers, Connor and Wheels all created some headaches with their mobility. The move of Herby into the ruck was a winner and Timmy Roberts just controls the footy no matter what position he plays. Well done boys. But that is the most pertinent word when doing an accurate analysis of last Saturday’s capitulation to East Brighton. My comment of 3 weeks ago that they were the most complete side we had faced this year was reinforced, and it became obvious well before half time that we were not going to be the team to hinder their thirteen game winning streak. We now have to cash in our double chance a week earlier than hoped. The U19s were unfortunately bundled out, but Matt will be proud of what his boys have achieved this year. The thirds had a stirring come-from-behind win to move right up to the pointy end of proceedings, while the twos had a week’s rest and will be more than ready to avenge their late season loss to the Heighters. And speaking of Chelsea, that’s also who the Seniors have to face in their quest for redemption and to progress into the third week. Supporters will keep a keen eye on the possible reinclusion of Wonnacott and Bartholomew, who would bolster the strength department that appeared to be lacking against the Vampires. Noodles may not be so lucky, after being poleaxed and carried off he will struggle to come up for selection. Regardless of who plays, the motivation to prove that last week was an aberration will drive the boys to book a Preliminary Final berth against either St Pauls or a rematch with East Brighton. And a week or two is a long time in football. Sponsors: Carlisle Homes, Top Cat CHELTENHAM Well that is that. HIGHETT comes to an end at Jack Barker Oval with the Reserves bowing out in heartbreaking fashion. Having led all day against the more fancied Clays, it looked as if the boys would live to fight another day, but kicking into what turned into a gale-force wind in the final term ultimately decided the game, even though we managed to kick three goals into it. To get so close with such an inexperienced team is a credit to the coaching of Azza and the commitment of the players who gave 100% all day. Special mentions to Stewy, Buttsy, Big Dan, Milesi and Boz on outstanding games and the three 16 year olds – Shauny, Jake and Harry on wonderful efforts. The Dingoes had been in pretty good nick, are a fast and young running team and had to be denied outside running if the Vampires were to prevail. The game started at a frenetic pace on a big Springvale ground. Depleted with injuries it was always going to be a tough ask but the boys rose to the occasion with pressure at the contest being paramount. It’s what finals football is all about. Fortunately the East Brighton unit is familiar with what is required in these circumstances and, more importantly, were able to produce it. What was pleasing was those that needed to lift did. Great to see Olly, Roons, Dillo and Bubsy go to another level. P Dog loves September and is ever the opportunist. 6 goals was a pretty fair return out of 13. Doutta gave a near flawless performance and led his team in fine style. In reality, all Saturday’s performance did was allow the Vampires another crack at the Premiership favourites St.Pauls so the real work is yet to be done. The Doggies have taken all before them in 2013 and it will be a real test. Maybe the tables are similar to 2011 only reversed. We encourage all supporters to get to Springy this week to cheer our warriors on, another victory this week sees the team in the Big Dance for the 3rd year in a row but, as previously mentioned the real work has to be done and there are no gimme’s. Any opposition to come will be just as determined so it’s a tough road ahead. Social: Need white goods? See Phil Lanning from Beko for a great deal and the chance to help your club. Congratulations to all four sides who really upped the ante. Both games appeared “All over Red Rover” at three quarter time, only to see the “expected defeated” sides storming home, one of those, Mordialloc, just falling short, whilst the other “loser”, Murrumbeena, running out winners! Not for the first time this year, the Murrumbeena boys proved me wrong again! They will probably be happy for me to tip against them this week as well now! Oakleigh District got the fright of their life and get to take on the rested and refreshed Bentleigh for direct entry into the Grand Final. Springvale Districts bow out of the fi nals race but certainly were not disgraced, and once they get over the loss, and their “Mad Monday” hangovers, will refl ect on their season and should be reasonably happy with how they went. First Semi Final Mordialloc v Murrumbeena Both these teams fi nished full of running and will be extremely confident of the outcome this week. One team will be disappointed though as there are no draws in SFL Finals! These teams played each other throughout the season, the first time, Mordialloc were the home team and Murrumbeena won by 3 goals, the return bout at Murrumbeena saw Mordialloc victors by 5 goals! Statistically, they go into this match pretty evenly poised. In a game where it is an “all or nothing, take no prisoners” affair, I am tipping Mordialloc to win this, but I’m sure Murrumbeena will be happy with that because they thrive on proving me wrong! Second Semi Final Bentleigh v Oakleigh District Bentleigh returns to the fray after a well-earned rest, allowing their troops to freshen up and get rid of any “nigglies” that may have been lingering. Oakleigh got a major fright last week and certainly won’t be able to rest on their laurels here. The prize is big here, a week off and a spot in the Grand Final! Losing isn’t an absolute disaster as the loser gets another chance through the Prelim, but given both options, the week off next week sounds much better. These teams also had mixed results during the season. Round 1 at Bentleigh, Oakleigh won by 9 points, the return match at Oakleigh saw Bentleigh victors by 14 points. (So much for home ground advantage during the season for all four fi nalists this week). This week we are on neutral territory and I think Bentleigh will make it through and enjoy another week’s rest. For Oakleigh District to get into Division 1, they’re looking at doing it the hard way, but they’re made of the stuff that can get them through and I’m sure they’ll come out fighting. It was a competitive game from the start with neither team getting the ascendency. 3 goals up at half time gave us a buffer but we knew that Mordi would keep coming. Both teams kicked 5 goals in the third which basically kept Mordi within striking distance kicking with the breeze in the last. We were unable to hold Mordi’s momentum going scoreless in the last to go down by 12 points. A disappointing way to end the season but to Mordi’s credit they deserved their victory. Feather was outstanding all day and worked hit but off. Our skipper in Lugga worked hard all day as BENTLEIGH For the first time in our club’s proud history we have five teams who won the right to play in finals. Our two netball teams set the ball rolling with both winning finals games. Although not taking home the ultimate prize the A teams effort finishing 3rd and the B teams effort to be Runner up were full of merit. This Saturday it is the football side of the clubs turn to show what they are made of. Three “top of the Table finishes” have given us the right to play in the Semi Finals refreshed and fighting fit. Wins to the Seniors, Reserves and Under 19’s is our expectation but will only happen with hard work and respect for our opposition on the day. We celebrate two player milestones this week. After one draw, and a loss this season it must be our turn to shake things up with a win! The Reserves had all supporters on the edge of their seats in the first final against Murrumbeena. Our boys were up against all odds leading into the last quarter and needed to double their score to come from behind to win, it was a fantastic effort by the team to win by just one point. The Reserves will also play Bentleigh this week at Clayton for the second time in three weeks, with only 10 28 | SFL RECORD 2013 did Shippa, Nixon and Shorty. Seniors: Didn’t look like we had turned up till the last quarter then 9 goals in the last to only go down by 8 points. Cannot afford to give a start like that this week. MURRUMBEENA Under 19s: The warmer conditions and the vast open spaces at Springy didn’t help the Young Guns who battled manfully throughout the day. Although the endeavour could not be questioned during the four quarters, the disposal by foot in particular was ordinary and resulted in a number of turnovers. At this time of the year the wind plays a key factor and most of the scoring was up one end and the boys defended well in the first quarter. The boys worked their way into the game and at half-time were only 12 points down. From then on Skye kept on gradually increasing the lead and the Young Guns ran out of puff towards the end of the game. Key contributors were Darcy, Harls, Jacko and James while Danny and AB worked hard in the forward line that had limited opportunities. Another chance this Sunday guys so lift your heads! Reserves: Finals time means dealing with warmer weather and tricky winds down at Meade Reserve and with the action 80% of the time up one end, the game plan was to make best use of the conditions. The boys Good luck to both teams as they strive to go a step further in 2013 Ray White Mordialloc, Bakers Delight Mordialloc,Leading Edge Telecom MFC would like to thank its valued major sponsors for their continued support Mordialloc Sporting Club, Bendigo Bank, Parkdale, Summit Concrete Pumping, Go Fitness, Kingston Skip Hire, Loan Market, Main St Café, Big River Timber, Carmotive, Bayside Physio, Mordialloc Cellar Door, Social: Football vote count Sunday 22nd September in the rooms Presentation night Saturday October 12th at Mordialloc Sporting Club $50 a head or $90 a couple. Go Bloods. got off to a positive start with the ‘breeze’ and the defensive skills of the squad stood up in the second quarter. Brucey was at his creative best on the half-back, Cam dominated his wing and the Ziebs Bros linked up to rebound and pump the ball forward. The 13 point lead at half-time was a great result but the damage was done in the premiership quarter as the Beena’s 1 goal 5 points was ultimately that one straight shot short in the end. As Siss said after the game, decision-making is the key area to work on as the scoreboard shows you’re not far off! Time to re-group and take on Mordi on Sunday so enjoy the extra day of ‘R & R’. there was still only 2 goals in it. We hung in for the best part of the third quarter kicking 2 goals apiece, until the last 5 minutes when Springvale slammed on 3 quick goals to go in 34 points up - a monumental task to get over. The last quarter started as it had to, with our first goal in 30 seconds. Multiple goals followed and we were closing in before the wiser heads at Springvale slowed the game & ran down the clock for a brief period. We had done all of the hard work to get this close & needed some luck, something to get us in front. This was in the form of our back pocket Ando, who followed his man into our forward line and somehow hit the front of the pack from a long ball in to kick the winning goal with 2 opposition players hanging off him. What a great effort and never say die attitude from the players - led by the Coach who took some important grabs, Semmel who was brilliant on-ball and ended up with 3 majors, Willis with three, a welcome return back to the side by DJ Spanos & possibly most important was Jarrod Walker’s shut down role. Back to business as usual now fellas, let’s regroup and reload for this Sunday’s game against Mordi. Seniors: No strangers to yet another elimination game, the stakes were higher this week against Springvale who had our measure twice earlier in the year. Kicking against the wind we battled hard & although we struggled to score, conceding only 3 goals was a good result. The second quarter got off to a disastrous start, with Springy kicking the first two in succession and a further 2 for the quarter. After our 11 scoring shots for a return of only 4 goals we were left wondering if we’d missed our opportunity, but somehow OAKLEIGH DISTRICT strong 51 point lead, but this is finals footy! WOW! A fantastic game of finals footy on Saturday against Mordialloc. A slow start to the final term saw the ball rebounding from each end with no early scores, until the Oaks pinched one into the breeze to extend to nearly 10 goals ahead. All of a sudden, Mordialloc came to life and started to win the ball out of the middle. 3 long goals and a cheeky one off the line had them up and running a sensing a boil over victory. Mordialloc continued to storm home and kicked 9 goals in the final term. With 3 minutes to go we held just a 12 point lead and it was game on. Both sides can be proud of their performance and especially our Oaks who did enough to come away with a win and progress to this week’s 2nd Semi Final against Bentleigh. Match Report: The sun came out right on cue for week one of the finals, but unfortunately so did the wind, making the conditions at Clayton tricky, and favouring the bottom end of the ground form the entire day. The Oaks won the toss and kicked with the breeze in the opening term and the boys didn’t waste the opportunity, running hard into space, put their head over the ball and sacrificing their bodies time and again, and it showed on the scoreboard- 4.7.31 to 0.2.2 at quarter time. The challenge was to defend against the breeze in the second term and again the Oaks delivered, kicking 2 goals into the breeze and allowing just 3 majors from Mordialloc, to lead 6.9.45 to 4.5.29 at the half time. We made our move in the third term kicking 5.5 to 1.0 and at ¾ time held a To our boys credit they weathered the storm, played hard to the final siren and came away with a 2 goal victory that puts us one win from a Grand Final appearance! This is what finals are all about, 22 players digging in, playing hard, desperate football right to the final siren. The team that is prepared to put their head over the ball and win it first usually gets the result, and that’s all that counts. Best players- all 22 that took to the field contributed to this win, and that will be needed right through this finals campaign. Today: An opportunity to advance to the Grand Final if we can topple Bentleigh-what a fantastic position to be in. The challenge is to take advantage of that opportunity (as many old players will tell you, another one may not come along). Put it all on the line today lads and I’m sure you will get the job done. Go Oaks!!! We were blessed to have Jack Barker Oval bathed in warm, glorious spring sunshine for both days of finals last week, creating perfect conditions for football. And Dandenong and Carrum Patterson Lakes put on a spectacle in the Qualifying Final on Saturday, treating fans to one of the all-time classic finals with the Lions getting home in a thriller by just one straight kick. The first half was ferocious, hard-hitting and skilful and neither side was willing to concede an inch. But it was the Lions’ key forward Daniel Polson who took the game by the scruff of the neck with two goals in the opening term, and another after the halftime siren to give his side an eight-point buffer going into the sheds. Carrum Patterson Lakes gained the ascendancy in the third term and blew the difference out to 29 points by the final change. The Redlegs made some inroads into the deficit in the last quarter, but Polson’s fourth major seemed to be the sealer, bringing the margin back out to 25 points at the 22-minute mark. But the Redlegs then piled on three goals in the next five minutes to give the Lions an almighty scare. In a frantic final minute, CPL hung on for dear life, but the siren put an end to what would have been a remarkable comeback – Dandenong falling just six points short. Warren Judd dominated 32 | SFL RECORD 2013 / Will Hunter around the stoppages and booted two important goals for the winners, though he had valuable assistance in Stu Cormack and Brett Wilson. For Dandenong, Regan Hall was imposing at every contest while Chris Hatfield and Chris Tosin had a hand in almost every Dandenong goal. Mount Waverley ended Ashwood’s season on Sunday, registering a 25-point win in the Elimination Final. The Magpies kicked with the breeze in the first term; however, they missed several easy chances in front of goal and trailed at quarter time. But up the other end powerhouse full-forward James Gough proved the difference between the two sides early. He dominated the Magpies’ backline, marking everything kicked in his vicinity and had five goals to his name midway through the second term to get the Mountain Lions ahead. Mount Waverley then capitalised on the Magpies’ turnovers and took control of the match in the third term. Their lead had blown out to 40 points midway through the last quarter before Ashwood restored some pride with a few late goals. But it was too little, too late as the Mountain Lions cruised to a Semi Final berth. Mountain Lion Michael Dennis was sublime in the middle and capped his performance with a pivotal final term goal. Ruckman Jarrod Wilkin was terrific all over the ground while Chris Colman provided plenty of drive from his intercepts off half back. Mitch Saunders and Paul Wineberg worked hard up forward for Ashwood with three goals each. This Saturday Doveton and Carrum Patterson Lakes have a chance to book a place in the 2013 Grand Final when they clash in the second Semi Final. The Eagles have been the team to beat this season as undefeated minor premiers. They boast a forward line capable of kicking big scores and Peter Dye and Ricky Ramsdale will prove a handful for Lions defenders. On the other hand, Carrum Patterson Lakes had performers all over the park last week and are more than capable of pulling off an upset here. That said, it’s hard to go past a team that has won 18 straight – Doveton will win by four goals. Dandenong and Mount Waverley clash on Sunday in the cut-throat first Semi Final. The Redlegs’ playmakers in Hatfield, Tosin, Matt Van Schajik and Dylan Bracebridge have been in terrific form in recent weeks and will need to be kept quiet if Mount Waverley is to get up. Conversely, Dandenong will be desperate to nullify Gough and Wilkin, both of whom are very difficult to match up on and can turn a game in a quarter. This is a game that could easily go either way, but I’m tipping it will be the Dandenong quartet that gets their side into the Preliminary Final. DANDENONG Saturday was as Doveton kicked clear to win by 39 points. While disappointing, it gave a few of the younger boys their first taste of finals intensity football, and they will be better for the experience. Chris Arnold was rock solid all day, and was ably supported by Colin Stott and Jake Holland. We will have to work hard on the track and regroup to take on Carrum-Patterson Lakes this Sunday. The Seniors were taking on finals debutants Carrum-Patterson Lakes. The first quarter was fairly tight, end to end football with CPL holding a 7 point lead at quarter time. The status quo remained in the second quarter as we trailed the Lions by 8 at half time. As in the Reserves, we were caught napping after break as Carrum kicked 4 goals to our 1 to stretch the lead to 29 points. With our supporters massing behind the goals to will the boys home, we finally kicked into gear. We rallied to within a goal on several occasions, but Carrum managed to sneak away time and time again, before time expired leaving us on the wrong side of a 6 point margin. As with the Black Rock game earlier in the year, we will learn a valuable lesson about only playing 1 quarter of football. Regan Hall punched about his weight as he has done all year to be our best, with help from Chris Hatfield and Matt Doggett. Mount Waverley awaits next week. An altogether disappointing day for the club, but both sides worked hard all year to secure the double chance, so all is not lost. Expect some hard yards on the track as we look to claw back some respect and keep our seasons alive on Sunday. a massive day for the club with the Seniors earning the right to play finals for the first time in 15 years. It is a testament to the hard work put in by our coaching staff and players. The Reserves kicked off proceedings against Doveton on a beautiful day for finals football. We had split our 2 previous games this year but heading into finals it counts for nothing. The boys appeared to settle better than their opposition early and held a 7 point lead at the first break. It was turning into a real arm wrestle in the second quarter and the sides couldn’t be separated at half time. After the break, our work rate dropped away and Doveton began to take advantage of the pressure they were applying as they kicked 4 goals to 1. We were held scoreless in the last 48 | SFL RECORD 2013 Saffron Grove Saffron Grove is a first class retirement village and has an Open Day scheduled for Friday 4 October, 10am – 3pm. The boys kicked against a slight breeze in the 1st and trailed by a couple of goals. If they put the ball through the big sticks in the 2nd ( Humpa) it could have been over. However, it was all square at the long break. The third was all ours with Humpa, Kneebone, and Bundy have great quarters. It ended up being a convincing win and gives us a shot at Sandown for a spot in the Granny. Humpa showed his class, as did Alex. The entire backline were outstanding headed by Hayden and Kneebone. Dave was excellent in the ruck, and Ange booted 6. A huge week for our club this week, with the chance to cap off a great season and get two sides into the big one. We have worked extremely hard, but it won’t just happen. Let’s bring the same attitude we have all year and give ourselves every chance. Remember our function on Saturday – including you Jarrod! Many thanks to our sponsors: Fountain Gate Bingo, Loan Studios, and Lindens Country Meat. ASHWOOD Seniors: In blustery and Peter for the year, however we know we need to work hard in the off season to ensure we can win games at the crucial time of the year. CPL to 2 goals kicking with the wind. conditions down at Cheltenham against rivals Mount Waverley, we knew we needed to be switched on from the start and we were kicking with the aid of a strong breeze. We managed to be down by a point in the first quarter, however we kicked inaccurately and Mount Waverley kicked four goals into the breeze. We only managed two goals in the second term and we were down by that margin at half time. We were outscored in the third quarter whilst we were kicking with the wind and trailed by 19 points going into the main break. Bergs addressed the boys and asked for one big final quarter to get over the line, however Mt Waverley were about to bang on six goals to five in the last quarter and ran out 25 point winners. We just weren’t able to hit the scoreboard when it counted in the third quarter, however a great effort against quality opposition. We were five goals down at three quarter time, but we only had one goal on the score and we finished the game strongly kicking four goals in the last quarter but it was all too late. Very disappointing way to be knocked out of finals. A second finals series in a row and as a group we wanted to do better than last season. We started well kicking into the wind and we managed to hold www.sfl.com.au | 49 SOUTHERN FOOTY 2013 50 | SFL RECORD 2013 SOUTHERN FOOTY 2013 Under 19s: Up & About SKYE has started its 2013 finals campaign in style, defeating Murrumbeena by 41 points in the Qualifying Final last Saturday. Although Beena registered the opening goal, the Bombers took the lead midway through the first term and from there were never headed. Although Skye used the vast expanses of Springvale Reserve better than their opponents, Beena were hampered by their lack of interchange players, which meant they tired in the second half, and the final deficit was not a real reflection of their spirit and endeavour. Darcy Hargrave was sensational for Beena and found plenty of the footy, while Harley Turkington did a sterling job in the back half. But Luke Bailey-Kohne’s dominance on the ball and Blake Bormann’s scintillating run and carry through the middle not only ensured the / Will Hunter Bomber’s victory, but kept its flag hopes alive. The following day saw St Pauls get the better of Dingley and advance to the Semi Finals. Although St Pauls were kicking with a strong wind in the first term, the Dingoes dominated around the ground and led at the first change. But the Doggies took control from that point on and a strong second half saw them finish 39 points to the good. Tim Roberts was the dominant big man on the ground and instrumental in the Doggies victory, particularly in the third term. Tim Carracher and Joel Parrett were also outstanding. For Dingley, Kristen Feehan had the ball on a string in an absolutely sublime performance while John Mentiplay was influential in the second half. This Saturday sees minor premier Bentleigh take on Skye in the second Semi Final for a place in the decider. This will be a tremendous clash between the two best sides in the competition. Skye plays this ground pretty well, and with their running players taking the game on they will make a good contest of this. But Bentleigh are the team to beat again this year and after a well-earned week off last week they will take the chocolates here. On Sunday Murrumbeena plays St Pauls in a cut-throat first Semi Final. Beena have some obvious talent but without a full bench they will struggle to run out a game at Springvale. St Pauls surprised me last week and a repeat performance will see them through to the Preliminary Final. This could go either way, but I’m tipping the Doggies after last week’s efforts. Your on-fi eld performances this week will have a big impact on where you are umpiring next week. While most of our umpires were pictures of sartorial elegance as they arrived at their games last week, there were a couple of umpires who arrived in scruffy jeans and trainers. Similarly, black footie boots or grey runners are not a good look! This is NOT the way to impress the umpiring department if you are hoping for a Grand Final. Similarly, arriving at the entrance gate without your pass and then trying to talk your way into the ground will not win you brownie points Brad Lowe arrived at Cheltenham on his pushbike last Sunday. One of the umpires saw this as a great opportunity to increase his speed around the ground, and spectators were stunned when our umpire took to the fi eld on the bike, covering the distance from the corner of the square / The White Knight to the behind post in about fi ve seconds. Meanwhile, from in front of the grandstand, Brad’s voice could be heard plaintively calling “Peter, bring the bike back now!” Final Appointments Night Function at ‘Number Ninety’, 90 Atherton Road, Oakleigh. The $50 cost will be deducted from your match payments. If you have umpired a fi nal, you are expected to attend this function Please invite any ex-umpires that you are in contact with to attend the function. They should contact Peter Martin at [email protected] to book a place. Some umpires have taken Peter Mair’s directive to arrive early for games to extremes, with Nick Bergman arriving 24 hours early for his appointment last Saturday. Former SFL boundary umpire Johnny Cooper ran the boundary for his fi rst VFL Reserves fi nal on Sunday. Coops has been keeping in touch with his SFLUA mates and evidently Jack Thompson had a “sleepover” at the Cooper residence not so long ago. However, neither of them can remember the evening! All umpires are invited back to Bricker Reserve after the Div 1 Grand Final for a light meal and refreshments to celebrate the end of the season. The Annual General Meeting will be held at the Highett RSL at 7pm on Wednesday September 25. The agenda and proxy forms will be available shortly at www.sfl umpires. com If you can’t attend, please fill in a proxy form at training and pass it on to a committee member. Shaun Barling is back from a trip to the UK for the Ashes and was supporting his younger brother Aussie at the fi nals last week. Hopefully, Shaun will be back on the fi eld with us next year.
