PRESIDENT’S COLUMN PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
The Board has decided to try some
different meeting locations for this
year. We had a number of suggestions
from our January meeting and we
have investigated them all. Thanks to
Gord Favelle for visiting or contacting
over 20 different restaurants. He put in
a lot of time finding places that met
our criteria. We expect to be trying out
each location twice to determine if it
should be repeated on a regular basis. The February
meeting was at Infernos Bistro and was a hit on many
fronts. For this reason we will be visiting it again for
the March 2 meeting. Please assist us by providing
feedback on our locations.
The more people that look at our site the better our
chances are of winning. On the site you can leave
comments, send in reports or photos of your car.
See our calendar of events for this year at
www.redriverpca.org and try to come out to as many
events as you can.
See you soon!
David
A big thank you to Keith Gordon for volunteering to be
social chair for this year!
Also thanks to Daniel Burkett for coming to our last
meeting and providing some insight into what it's like
to be a "real" race car driver. He has a short piece in
this edition of the newsletter. He has also agreed to
become a member of our region.
Andreas Kottschoth has done a great job arranging the
North West Ontario tour for July. It is fully booked but
there is a waiting list if more hotel accommodation can
be booked. Contact Andreas directly if you are
interested.
Andreas is entering our region web site in the PCA
web site competition for this year. He is looking for
member input so please have a look at the web site and
pass your comments on to him.

EDITOR’S COLUMN
Purists, your Porsche is here.
The factory has just announced
the imminent release of the new
911 R. Built in a limited edition
of just 991 examples, the R is
everything that purist drivers
have been clamouring for.
The car features a 500-hp 4.0 litre flat six from the
Gt3 RS, backed up by one choice of transmission - a
slick-shifting six-speed manual. The 911 R is pitched
as a driver’s car, not a track-day toy, but a car to enjoy
driving on the road, every day. And that enjoyment
might come at the expense of a few creature comforts,
though - air conditioning and stereo aren’t included
but can be specced at no cost. However, the deletions
help the R achieve the lightest curb weight in the
entire 911 lineup - a claimed feathery 3,021lbs.There’s
even fabric straps instead of interior door handles!
The rest of the interior looks equally tasty, with
carbon-fiber seats upholstered in natty houndstooth
fabric, and a special steering wheel. Some sound
deadening material has been removed as well, saving
weight and allowing the two lucky occupants (there’s
no rear seat) to better savour the mellifluous sounds of
the powerful flat-six engine. And remember, no
stereo!
Underneath, the R doesn’t disappoint either. Chassis
and suspension come straight from the GT3 RS. Rearaxle steering and Porsche Composite Ceramic brakes
are standard. A front-axle lift system makes short
work of speed bumps rolling under the centre-locking
20” forged wheels..
Sounds good, right? But at $211,000 Canadian
dollars, the car is for the elite enthusiast. And if you
want one, you’d better act fast, because reports are
that the 991 vehicle production run is already nearly
sold out.
I’ll take two! ;-)

HERO
Red River PCA Member Daniel
Burkett scored a podium finish at
Daytona in a Cayman GT4.
Here's how he got there.
Photos courtesy Daniel Burkett/CJ Wilson Racing
Red River members who were able to attend February's
meeting might recall meeting a new Club member, a
pleasant young man called Danny Burkett. He's a
professional car racer and more than that, races Porsche
sports cars. We caught up with Danny via email as he was
finishing up some corporate track days with his team in Los
Angeles.
RRR Editor: You started your career in karts. How old
were you when you started racing karts, and how did you
get involved in karting?
Daniel Burkett: I got started racing at the age of 9,
although the it's been in my blood since a very young age.
My dad, Murray, is a huge car nut and lives to tinker with
almost anything he can get his hands on. He actually just
purchased a vintage Lotus 61 Formula Ford. Ever since I
can remember my summers have been filled with racing.
We would road trip down to the SCCA June Sprints most
summers in the motor home, and make countless trips to
Gimli for local Winnipeg Sports Car Club races. Eventually,
Dad was finished with racing, and decided the new family
activity would be to go kart racing! From there it was a
passion, and an addiction that I've been hooked on ever
since!
RRR: How did you transition from karts to open-wheel
racing?
DB: I took a big jump and skipped the usual Formula Ford
and went into USF2000 as a part of the Mazda Road To
Indy. Looking back I think that was a mistake in my career
path, I would've gained much more skill and experience in
FF but everything has seemingly worked out. Ha!
4
4
RRR: How do you think karting has benefited you in your
open-wheel career?
DB: I spent a lot of years in karts. Maybe too many years.
But I feel my racecraft is one of the strongest attributes that
I bring to the table. I'm able to plan out moves 3-4 corners
in advance which really helps when you're only racing in a
30 minute sprint race.
RR: The main thrust of your racing so far has been openwheeled series. However, you've recently become a convert
to "tin-top" racing. How did that come about?
DB: It was very much a business decision. The open wheel
ladder is extremely expensive and requires a lot of
sponsorship. In addition to that, the partnerships that I've
gained from the CJ Wilson Racing business development
team have been massive. My new partner, One Capital
Management, has absolutely loved working in the sports car
environment, and I don't see us leaving anytime soon. That
being said, I'm still working hard to put together an Indy
500 program in the next 2-3 years.
RRR: You recently raced "Darth Cayman" - a new Porsche
Cayman GT4 - to an amazing third-place result at Daytona.
What was that experience like?
DB: It was pretty awesome! I've only been in a GT car
about ten times, total. The race being my tenth!
So, I'm still learning how to drive with the extra
suspension travel and such. But leading in my debut
race, with our debut car was awesome. The president
of Porsche Motorsport North America actually
personally congratulated me after the race, which was
absolutely incredible!
RRR: Sports cars or open wheelers. Which is more
fun? More rewarding? Why?
DB: They each have their own special qualities. In
GT racing you have the mindset of working as a team
and becoming faster as a whole. In formula cars it's
more mano-a-mano and that you have to be fast as an
individual. So far I'm loving the team environment of
GT racing compared to the cutthroat formula car
world. But I'm sure there will be moments where I
miss my custom molded seat from the formula car
when I'm doing a double stint in the hot, sticky, GT
car.
RRR: Who are your racing idols?
DB: I wouldn't say I ever really had an idol when I
entered the pro racing world. Growing up I was a
huge NASCAR fan and Tony Stewart was my driver.
I still have tons of orange Home Depot #20 die-casts.
I look up to guys like Scott Dixon, Jenson Button,
and Dario Franchitti.
5
I view them as gentleman racers, but in a good way! They
personify everything a professional driver is supposed to
be: classy, intelligent, well-spoken, and most importantly,
mind-blowingly fast.
RRR: What do you see in your racing future? Do your
plans involve Porsche?
DB: Long-term, I see myself trying to make a home with
the CJ Wilson Racing guys. We all get along extremely
well, and it feels very natural. We're a very young team (all
under 35yrs) so it's easy to relate to each other. A part of me
still wants to chase the Indy 500 dream, and CJ is doing his
best to help me with that. Ideally my future is full time
CJWR in whatever series we run whether it be IMSA or
WEC, and the 500 every year.
RRR: What do you drive on the street? Any plans for a
Porsche? If so, what model would you consider?
DB: Currently I drive a hand-me-down Cadillac from my
pops. Which is a wonderful car to drive, but it doesn't quite
have the get up and go. I've been perusing around for a 944
in decent shape that I could daily drive, but that's at the
bottom of my agenda right now. The Cayman GT4
Clubsport is doing the job for my speed fix at the moment!
RRR: Danny, we want to wish you all the best in your
racing, and thanks so much for taking the time to answer
our questions.
DB: My pleasure.

SCOTTSDALE
Great
In the collector car world, various times of year hold
special significance. Here in North America, collectors
and enthusiasts flock to Arizona in January for “auction
week”. Even non-enthusiasts have heard of the massive
Barrett-Jackson auctions broadcast on TV, but for Eurocar fans there are even more tantalizing sales to be
attended. This is the story of a trip to the auctions.
By Dallas Ewen

Two of the pre-eminent auction houses featuring European
and exotic car sales during auction week are Bonhams and
RM/Sothebys. Established in 1793, Bonhams entered the
motorcar auction scene in a big way when it was acquired
by Robert Brooks' eponymous auction house in 2000,
becoming Bonhams & Brooks. In 2001 it merged with
another surviving Georgian auction house, Phillips Son &
Neale, the new entity being known simply as Bonhams.
RM Sotheby's, formerly RM Auctions, was founded by
Canadian auctioneer Rob Myers. Myers' firm boasts an
impressive record as an automobile auctioneer, including
the sale of one of the world's most expensive cars ever sold
at auction a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa hammered in
May 2009 for $12,402,500. In 2015, Sotheby's, the famed
British auctioneer, acquired a 25% stake in RM Auctions
which then became known as RM Sotheby's.
I was fortunate enough to be visiting a friend in San Tan
Valley (Phoenix suburb) this January during auction week.
Being an enthusiast as well, my friend rounded up another
buddy and the three of us hit the previews for Bonhams and
RM Sotheby's on the Wednesday. If you're not planning on
bidding on anything, it's a great idea to attend “previews”
rather than the auction proper, since it's far less crowded
and you get a much better look at the cars.
9
First up was Bonhams, held at the Westin Kierland
Resort in Scottsdale. Admission charge was $20, which
we didn't feel unreasonable for admission to what was
essentially an extremely high-end car show. Exotics and
Euros abounded, and notable Porsches included a 1955
356 Pre-A “Continental” Coupe (sold for $143,000USD
including premium), 1962 356 Carrera 2 GS Coupe
($627,000) and our cover car, a 1973 911 Carrera RS
($525,000). A host of more modern Porsches sold as
well, many for strong money: 1987 Carrera 3.2 Coupe
($57,000), 1977 930 ($170,500).
1964 Aston Martin DB5
The atmosphere at Bonhams was friendly and I met a
fellow PCA member from Santa Barbara admiring the
Carrera RS. There were plenty of other interesting cars
there too, of course, including some unusual German
and Italian iron: BMW 3.0 CSL “Batmobile” (which set
a world auction record for the model) and M1, Ferrari
1973 BMW 3.0CSL Daytona and 275 GTB, and a cocaine-white
Lamborghini Countach 5000 QV which sold for an
astonishing $297,000!

Next we headed back across town to the palatial grounds of
the Biltmore, and the RM Sotheby's preview. If the
Bonhams lots were impressive, RM's were astounding - a
Lamborghini Miura SV and AC Cobra 427 greeted visitors
on arrival. The Arizona Biltmore hotel itself is a remarkable
complex, opened in 1929. It was designed by Phoenix
architect Albert McArthur although authorship is often
attributed to Frank Lloyd Wright, who spent significant
time on-site as a design consultant. In fact, the hotel plays
up the FLW connection significantly, its on-site bar being
called “Wright's” and a restaurant, “Frank & Albert's” (for
Wright and McArthur). The grounds are amazing,
especially the pool around which we had lunch formerly
the haunt of Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe and
before her, the actual location where Irving Berlin penned
“White Christmas.”
But we hadn't come just to hang around the pool - there
were plenty of cars to see, and admission was free!
Porsches were in a bit shorter supply here but there were
still some impressive examples, including a nice 1976 930
“Turbo Carrera ($187,000), a 1962 APAL-Porsche
($88,000) and a 1988 959 (no sale). Being a child of the
'80s a lot of the cars on offer were right in my wheelhouse
especially my ultimate dream car, the 1985 Ferrari 288
GTO. It was fantastic to see this car along with the 959;
introduced around the same time, they shared a competition
brief FIA Group B racing. Although the category
eventually ended up being cancelled as the cars were too
fast and dangerous for their own good, it's a shame we
never got to see Zuffenhausen's technological spaceship
duel Maranello's turbo hot-rod on the track. Perhaps
fittingly, the GTO shared the 959's fate as a no-sale in the
auction as well.

What a day... Beautiful weather, more classics and
exotic cars than you could shake a stick at, and a
fantastic lunch by the pool... If you can manage at all
to get down to Phoenix for auction week, I highly
recommend it. Make sure to go to the preview day, as
early in the week as you can manage - the crowds are
much lighter. And be sure not to drool on the cars!
