COSUGI @ Disney World – May 2-5, 2012
COSUGI @ Disney World – May 2-5, 2012
Though I wasn’t able to attend the “Day of Coding” pre-conference I did arrive in time to
attend the post-pre-conference reception for APIers and get caught-up with friends that I
hadn’t seen for years. The opening session, “You, Your Community and SirsiDynix” was
largely a sales pitch for new products and services that the company plans to release later
this year. The good news is that SD seems to be doing a better job of listening and being
responsive to customers’ concerns. Much of the leadership is made up of new and younger
faces compared to the last time I was able to attend one of these meetings which was in
Nashville in 2008. I liked their attitude and their energy and I liked much of what I saw in
their demonstration. I also enjoyed it when Berit Nelson, VP of Library Relations, gave my
Paperless Online Weeding presentation a plug during her keynote remarks.
Lunch, as were all of the meals, was not only delicious but it was an opportunity to visit with
old friends and make new ones. At one meal I met a fellow from Rollins College, mentioned
that I thought Sirsi’s Blue Cloud looked a lot like Summon, learned that Rollins had been an
early implementer of Summon and proceeded to get good advice and new ideas for making
the job of updating our holdings in Summon much easier. This is just one example of how
fruitful the networking opportunities were at this conference.
Sessions attended included:
Statistical Snapshots – Joel Hahn (widely regarded as the most accomplished and helpful
‘user’ in the SirsiDynix Users Group) suggested techniques for harvesting “all sorts of
strange and interesting statistics about what goes on in the library.”
e-Library Customization: Some Under-the-Hood Examples – with just a few simple
examples SD Trainer Matthew Phillips showed how easy it would be to make e-Library,
Sirsi’s current ‘free’ OPAC, as flexible as Web2 (that isn’t what he meant to do, he doesn’t
know Web2, but that is what he did.) After the upgrade from 3.1 to 3.4 this OPAC will be
available to us and I will figure out whether or not it would provide a better search
experience than Web2 can accomplish.
RDA Update: Efficiencies and Simplicities for Your Library’s RDA Transition – this
tried to be a sales pitch for SD’s implementation of the RDA Toolkit (which is a subscription
service) by Ranny Lacanienta, former customer, API wiz, and now SD employee. It ended
up being a session for catalogers who wanted to debate the wisdom of abandoning the
245$h and replacing it with 336-338 fields. I left wondering if it wouldn’t be possible for us
to build our own RDA toolkit.
Need an App? Build One! – Mike Ridinger of INFOhio explained why it can be so difficult
to build an iOS or Android app and showed how simple it can be to do the same depending
on which programming languages and/or open source services you decide to use. He
actually built a simple app during his presentation and warned everyone that the most
difficult step is uploading it to the iTunes store!
Mapping Your Library with Web Services and Google Maps – John Wohlers, a long
time proponent of Web2 from Waubonsee Community College, showed how he uses Web
Services (aka API) to accomplish a more specific shelf locator than we currently have at
Drew. I will be looking into applying his technique to our maps after I get the upgrade done.
API Sharing Session & Projects Parade – led by Joel Hahn this two-hour session was an
opportunity to ask questions and get new ideas for ways to use API by hearing about what
others are doing at their libraries.
COSUGI Business Meeting & Raffle – no real news here other than the fact that some of
the board members are newly elected, others are continuing in their multi-year terms, and
we’re still looking for a Conference Chair Elect. The meeting was not very well attended and
so dozens of names had to be read out loud (one had to be present to win) before the
several door prizes were all, finally, awarded. Some of the prizes were substantial: there
was a Kindle, a Nook, an iPod, etc…and no, I didn’t win anything.
Paperless Online Weeding (POW) – this was the swan song for the presentation that I
first gave during my interview here at Drew. It was very well attended and several people
asked many smart questions. I was especially glad that SD gave me the opportunity to
install POW on their demo server so that I could show that POW can be set up (not only
w/out Web2, but) independently of whatever OPAC a library might be using.
Symphony System Administration (Windows) Sharing Session – I facilitated this
conversation which was similar to the API Sharing Session but for fellow sys-admins. It was
a good mix of folks w/questions and folks w/answers. I came away with some good ideas
that I look forward to applying to the upgrade process.
Stump the Chumps: Symphony Q & A – Joel Hahn, Mark Witteman, John Wohlers, and
Kendal Orrison (four of the most knowledgeable and accomplished SD customers) fielded
questions from the audience on a wide range of topics including how BRS indexing and
updating really works and why some SD OPACs are customizable (Web2 & e-Library which
are free) and others (Enterprise which costs $$) are not. Why the OPAC can’t tell whether
you’re using a PC or a smart phone was also very interesting.
There were relatively few exhibitors but I was glad to see my old friend Peder Christensen
at the Syndetics Solutions booth. It didn’t take long to get spoiled by the big flat-screen
monitors that they had at the SD booth. When I mentioned Web2 to one of the SD
developers he got curious and asked me to look for him in the Ask SirsiDynix room. I found
him and offered to show him what could be done with Web2’s antiquated technology – he
was skeptical at first but before we were done he was scratching his head about the fact
that Web2 + API could do things that Enterprise can’t do. I pointed out that Web2 can’t do
faceted searching. I think we both came away with new ideas for making searching better.
I got to spend some quality time with Vera Maeser, our Library Relations Manager, on the
bus from the hotel to the airport. We compared notes about the conference and filled each
other in about programs that one or the other of us had missed. We’ll touch base again at
the SNRG meeting at Montclair in June.
I’m attaching the conference program to this report. If you’re especially interested in
anything I’ll get the PowerPoint slides and presenter contact information to you as soon as
they are released which will be in about two weeks.
Let me know if you have any questions!

Welcome
Déjà vu!
This seems familiar being back at Disney’s
Coronado Springs Resort. A couple things are different,
though. COSUGI is now three years old, having celebrated
our first COSUGI conference here two years ago. Also, we
have over 60 user presentations this year, thanks to our
members. We’re hosting a pre-conference on RDA and its
impact on us as SirsiDynix customers as well as a free
Day of Coding for Symphony reports. Regardless of what
SirsiDynix product you use, there are a great number of
programs for all customers. We expect this to be another
great year in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
This year’s theme reflects on the trend that many remarkable
changes have been occurring over the past few years, and
more yet to come. Social technology has exploded, open
source is still flourishing, and the browser wars have sparked
some great browser enhancements. I, myself, am excited to
hear more about SirsiDynix’s eResource Central solution and
updates to Enterprise. Whether it is using a SirsiDynix product
or another utility, what possibilities exist to enhance the
professional productivity of the SirsiDynix product user? Users
sharing knowledge is what this user conference is about. We
hope you will come to this conference ready to share your
unique ideas and workflow solutions with your fellow users.
This is what makes the conference a success.
Of course, the conference is made possible largely due in part to
the support of SirsiDynix. They help to sponsor the conference,
provide staff for onsite user support, and there is no denying
they throw a heck of a conference party. Special thanks go to
Berit Nelson, Melissa Bankhead and Erin Spurgeon for their
effort and collaboration in organizing the SirsiDynix programs
that are so important to our conference, as well as Margaret
Pelfrey and Ranny Lacanienta for their assistance in making the
Day of Coding Pre-Conference a reality.
While the SirsiDynix suite of products is the uniting reason that
we attend the conference, we are indebted to all our exhibitors
who support the conference and the sponsors among them
who provide refreshments and other services such as internet
and print services. Please visit the exhibit hall during the noconflict times to see what products and services are available
from these vendors.
COSUGI 2012 Annual Conference Lake Buena Vista, FL
We will be announcing the elected officers of the 2012-2013
COSUGI Board of Directors, who will assume the obligations
of the board office beginning July 1st. We invite all users
to express where they would like to see the board go and
what activities to participate in during the following year. We
represent the users’ needs and want to hear your perceptions.
Contrary to this year’s theme, “Imagine the Possibilities,” I
actually couldn’t imagine the possibility of the conference
taking place without the hard work and dedication of several
people. Every year, an unwitting victim runs for Conference
Chair-Elect, unaware of the shadowy conference waters
awaiting them for the next two years. We are eternally grateful
to our 2012 COSUGI Conference Committee, Conference Chair
Laura England-Biggs, Conference Chair-Elect Kay Dunker, and
COSUGI Chair-Elect Tim Rowley for planning and organizing a
great conference. We also would like to express our gratitude
to David Farley for his participation in the conference planning
efforts. (He willingly volunteered! Imagine the possibilities!)
Pia Jones of ICM and her staff have performed another
job well done as our professional conference planner. ICM
manages contract negotiation, exhibit sales, catering and
other conference logistics. Without Pia, I am certain that
those involved in the planning process would invest even
more heavily in over-the-counter pain relievers. A special
thank you to COSUGI’s Executive Assistant, Frances Orton,
for the work she does throughout the year managing the day
to day affairs of COSUGI. I would be careless if I didn’t thank
Michael Bowden for his great notion for a Day of Coding
Pre-Conference. Through the combined effort of the COSUGI
Board, we’ve made some great strides this year and I want
to personally express my appreciation for all of the Board
members. They have been a great group to work with.
To the presenters, where would be without you? We appreciate
your willingness to stand in front of your peers and share your
experiences and knowledge. You deserve the credit for your
leading role in this conference.

Outsourcing Authority Control for
NOOBs 101
With the right planning and understanding, a
monster authority control project can be easier
and less costly than you might think. The Stewart
Library at Weber State University had desperately
needed a full authority control face-lift in the worst
way. Staff, cost, time, and the fear of the unknown
had needlessly delayed a proper implementation of
authority control for over a decade. Facing our fears
and concerns, we stepped into the unknown only to
find the process to be nothing to be afraid of in the
least. Presenter will discuss the Stewart Library’s
experience in setting-up, applying, and the ongoing
maintenance of accurate authority records. Nothing
has made us happier than having squeaky clean
authorities and we would love to share how we got
them with you.

Smoothing the Rough Edges:
Redesigning the User Online
Experience in Academic Reserves
Stanford University is currently developing new user
interfaces for Academic Course Reserves. First, an
interactive space for faculty, lecturers and their proxies to create, view the status, and make changes
to their Course Reserve lists. It will include links
to Stanford’s online catalog (Blacklight) to aid the
selection of titles, and to our Course Management
system (CourseWork) to validate course information. Users will also be able to view and update lists
from past quarters. Second, an enhanced search
discovery tool for students. We’ll add the ability to
search by Course name, include bi-directional links
to the course page in the Course Management
system, and add a search for materials used for the
course during previous quarters. We’ll also enhance
the reserve information seen by the user, including
detailed Reserve Desk hours.

A Quickie Inventory:
One Library’s Experiment
It has been a number of years (if ever) that an
inventory has been completed in our library. We
reviewed the inventory reports available in WorkFlows, and quite frankly, we were a little nervous.
How could we inventory specific areas of the library
collection quickly and accurately without using the
scary inventory reports? Using ONE bibliographic
report we were able to achieve the results we
wanted. During this presentation I will share with
you our reasoning and methods behind our inventory experiment.

established full OCLC membership for all member
libraries of the consortia, inventoried all collections to ensure our OCLC holdings are correct, and
conducted weeding in all collections. The panel

VuFind, eBooks & Innovation:
The Hybrid Edition
Douglas County Libraries embarked on a technological whirlwind the past two years. We offered
hands-on demonstrations and support for eBook
readers and devices, teamed up with the Colorado
Library Consortium (CLiC) to identify and incorporate
nearly 500 of the most popular Project Gutenberg
titles in our catalog, and formed a partnership with
the Colorado Independent Publishers Association
(CIPA) to manage the content ourselves (digital rights
management, circulation), and incorporate them into
our system. We embraced VuFind, for its eBook integration and full-text indexing, search and discovery
features, use of a recommendation engine, and its
review system. How these projects took shape, the
obstacles we faced in their implementation, and the
direction the library is taking now will be discussed.

Empowering Employees
Through Knowledge
Research shows that limited development opportunities are cited as a cause of lower employee engagement. As employees mature in their positions, they
can begin to feel stagnant. Research also shows that
these employees are interested in ways to improve
and grow their skill sets. All of us remember going
through our initial courses, trying to grasp as much
information as possible. However, how many interesting tidbits did we simply forget in our efforts to master
the most important or direct tasks? What new tools
are available in the software? Could there be more
efficient processes for accomplishing our daily tasks?
SirsiDynix provides a full library of instructionally
designed and cost effective education opportunities
that make accomplishing this goal simple.
