Welcome
Dear participants,
On behalf of Belfast City Council, I am delighted to welcome you to the
Global India Business Meeting, here in our great city.
Over the next few days you will have the opportunity to meet fellow Indian
and local business leaders; form new, and rekindle existing business relationships; and both start and continue dialogues to further build on existing links
between Belfast and India.
The success of established links between India and Belfast is already evident
as organisations including Firstsource, L&T, HCL Technology, Techmahindra
and Polaris Software have brought considerable investment, jobs and skills to
our shores. And as a city we’re determined to build on this success to further
cement our place as a location of choice for foreign direct investment.
We’re currently investing £150 million into projects such as the introduction
of super-fast broadband, building world class conference and exhibition
facilities and establishing innovation centres and green economy business
parks. Belfast is building for the future and our young, educated and skilled
workforce will continue to be the life force pushing the city onwards.
Furthermore, the confident, changing Belfast has become a destination for
tourists from around the globe, attracting 7.86 million visitors annually.
Visitors are discovering a flourishing cultural scene combined with a unique
heritage in a city transformed. A city has emerged where history is all
around you; where legacy and tradition live on in our stories; where the sharp
humour and vibrant creativity of people bring the city to life. It has become a
gateway through which visitors go on to experience the fantastic hospitality
that we have to offer.
Belfast City Council has worked closely with Horasis and Invest Northern
Ireland to develop what I hope you will find to be an informative, relevant
and engaging itinerary. I hope you enjoy your time here while attending the
2013 Global India Business Meeting.

The city of Belfast will always be known as the city that built Titanic and
while over 100 years may have passed since Titanic set sail, the innovation,
dedication and industry that built her still thrives in Belfast today.
Belfast is looking to the future, currently investing £150 million to capitalise
on our growing reputation as a city of choice for foreign direct investment and
creative industries with a young population and skilled workforce; a leading
venue for world-class events and a top cultural and tourism destination.
As the capital city of Northern Ireland, Belfast has a population of 280,962.
34% of our population are under 24 years of age, and 64% percent are of
working age (between 16 and 65).
Having attracted 110 foreign direct investment projects between 2006 and
2011, the city is home to two thirds of Northern Ireland’s top 50 companies
and half of all foreign owned businesses.
Belfast is a connected city. With two airports and a port as well as rail links
to Dublin and an excellent road network, the city is well placed to do business throughout the island of Ireland, the United Kingdom and beyond. And
digitally, Belfast is investing in world-class connectivity offering ultrafast and
wireless broadband by 2015.
The commitment of the city leaders and the investment they have secured is
evident. Belfast is open for business; Belfast is ready for the future.

has a vibrant business scene and is experiencing increasing success in global

entrepreneurship, innovation and international trade and investment.
Northern Ireland already has strong links with India, through local companies
doing business there and Indian companies setting up operations here. At the
heart of this success is its workforce which is among the youngest and best
educated in Europe with a strong work ethic.
Invest Northern Ireland, the region’s economic development agency,
ensures investing and doing business here is a positive and straightforward
experience. Offering international investors a wide range of assistance
including support for job creation, skills development and R&D activities,
