have a well-earned reputation for clinical excellence and extraordinary service. Our
patients tell us that the Ridgeview experience is decidedly different from what they
encounter at other health care facilities.
This report highlights Ridgeview Medical Center’s financial standing, patient
volumes, new services, growth and service to the community, in addition to Ridgeview
Foundation’s donations, disbursements and donor recognition.

As a nonprofit, independent hospital, Ridgeview Medical Center relies on volunteers to contribute to the
running of the organization. In 2010, 450 active volunteers donated more than 39,605 hours to Ridgeview
and its clinics.

Letter to the Community
Dear Friends of Ridgeview Medical Center,
The year 2010 was one of recovery and preparation for Ridgeview—moving out of the
recession toward some of the greatest opportunities and challenges in our history.
In partnership with Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, we opened our new
Neonatal Care Unit in January 2010 and immediately began caring for multiple infants
needing this specialized care. In its first year, the NCU staff cared for 167 babies—a
wonderful benefit for families who otherwise would have had to travel longer distances
for this level of care. Our new Birthing Center celebrated its first anniversary in June
2010, and welcomed a record number 1,313 babies last year.
We also welcomed a new accreditation agency in 2010, moving from the Joint Commission to DNV (Det Norske
Veritas)—a progressive, international organization focused on safeguarding life, property and the environment.
We changed accreditation agencies for several reasons: less cost, more proactive and less punitive. DNV focuses on
improvement and provides an annual accreditation cycle versus every three years to allow us to become a world-class
organization. We continue to be one of the highest-performing hospitals in the area of quality and improvement activity,
evidenced by our continued recognition we receive from the Center for Medicare Services and the health plans.
With a goal to bring expanded and more convenient access to comprehensive health care to the greater southwest metro,
we spent much of 2010 preparing for the Feb. 1, 2011, opening of Two Twelve Medical Center in Chaska. We built a
163,000-square-foot, four-story facility while working collaboratively to welcome new partners—and some of the state’s
leading clinics and providers—into this unique health care destination. Anchored by 24/7 emergency and urgent care
(which Ridgeview provides in partnership with Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota) and housing 20 specialty
clinics and services, Two Twelve has already been recognized among the most innovative health care models in
the country.
We also welcomed and planned for new programs and services to meet the growing needs of our patients, and bring
high-quality specialty care much closer to home and work—including expanded gastroenterology/endoscopy services,
endocrinology, inpatient and outpatient neurology services, pediatric integrative medicine and a bariatric program.

We celebrated the holiday season with a significant “gift” to our patients and medical staff. Thanks to a generous
donation from our Foundation, we were able to purchase a da Vinci® Surgical System—bringing breakthrough
technology to our surgical program that is already nationally recognized for its quality of care.
I’m also pleased to report that Ridgeview once again received the HealthGrades Outstanding Patient Experience
Award™, for ranking among the top five percent of all hospitals in the nation. Ridgeview was one of only 14 hospitals to
receive this award in 2010 and one of only 10 in Minnesota to receive the award for two years in a row.
This is an exciting time for Ridgeview Medical Center and our health care partners. We have exceptional physicians
and staff, the most advanced technology, premier partnerships, and patient-friendly, accessible facilities throughout the

Community Benefit Contributions Total $27,349,232
One of the many ways Ridgeview demonstrates its mission to enhance the health of the people in the communities it serves is
through our community benefit program. Community benefits are defined as activities that respond to an identified community
need. Such activities benefit the whole community, people living in poverty, and the uninsured and underinsured. Ridgeview
continually assesses the needs and resources in the community, sets priorities among service gaps and problems, works with other
community groups, and develops organized plans, programs and services.
In 2010, Ridgeview’s contributions to communities in the five-county area totaled $27,349,232. The hospital’s free and reducedcost programs and services encompass health screenings and education, in-kind donations to other nonprofits, disaster
preparedness, unreimbursed research studies and more. This figure will be part of a statewide report released annually by the
Minnesota Hospital Association that demonstrates the variety of ways Minnesota hospitals improve quality of life and the economy.
Highlights of Ridgeview’s 2010 Community Benefit Report include:
Government Underfunding: Programs like Medicaid pay Minnesota hospitals below what it costs to provide services. For
example, the gap between the cost of care and payment for Medicaid was $6,110,706. Expenses for traditional charity care totaled
$339,464.
Education for Health Professionals: Ridgeview helps train physicians, nurses, radiology technicians and a host of other
highly skilled health care professionals. For education—such as high school students shadowing, to internships for pharmacy,
imaging, dietary students and more—Ridgeview spent nearly $535,612.
Community Services: Ridgeview spent $520,951 providing community services including reduced-cost mammograms,
preventive health screenings, support group sessions, health education seminars, free lactation advice to new moms in the westmetro area, in-kind donations to other nonprofits’ community health initiatives and participation in other community-building
activities.
Research: Ridgeview spent $13,193 to participate in the Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP), which is a large network
that enables patients and physicians to participate in clinical trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Through
the CCOP network, community physicians work with scientists to conduct NCI-supported clinical trials. This collaboration helps
answer questions at the community level about the effectiveness of new ways to detect, diagnose and treat cancer.
Taxes and Other Indirect Community Benefits: The total for this category is $19,668,624. This category includes the
unreimbursed costs of Medicare, discounts given to the uninsured and taxes.

A Message From Ridgeview Foundation
Dear Friends of Ridgeview Foundation:
Ridgeview Foundation is fortunate indeed to have a group of compassionate, caring individuals and
businesses that ensure the long-term health and success of Ridgeview Medical Center. In a year when
most nonprofits experienced significant hardship, Ridgeview not only sustained its momentum, but it
experienced dynamic growth.
Of the Foundation’s many highlights in 2010 was the successful completion of the 25th Annual Golf
& Taste Celebration. Proceeds from the event were used to complete the Marie Steiner Kelting Hospice
Home. The 2010 revenue of $951,000 was the largest in the event’s long history and earned Golf
and Taste the distinction of being the second-largest golf event in the Twin Cities in 2010. I wish to
personally thank the hundreds of volunteers and participants who helped us achieve this tremendous success.
Last year also marked the first-ever Harvest Moon event held at Hazeltine National Golf Club. This event grossed over $260,000 for
Ridgeview’s new da Vinci® Surgical System—making Ridgeview the second-smallest hospital in the nation with a da Vinci. I would
be remiss if I did not recognize the leadership and support of the Ridgeview Foundation Board of Directors. Under the leadership of
Chair Kate Roehl, this group delivers an unmatched dedication, enthusiasm and compassion for the work of the Medical Center and
the care of its patients.
I also want to recognize the contributions of our Founder’s Society (donors who have committed $10,000 or more) and Ridgeview
Friends & Family (the Foundation’s community and employee giving club). Through the philanthropy of these two groups,
Ridgeview remains an innovative leader in Minnesota health care.
Finally, thank you for ensuring a very bright future for Ridgeview Foundation. We are inspired by your generosity and will work even
