General Facts About Germany
Germany, situated in west central Europe, is a beautiful country
and a popular tourist destination. There are approximately 82
million people living in Germany. As a country with about 357
square kilometers it is one of the most densely
populated countries in the world. Despite the population, the
Germans have succeeded in keeping almost one-third of the
country covered with forests and woodlands. Germany is a land
filled with beautiful castles, charming villages, lakes, snowcapped mountains, and lush green surroundings.
Only a few countries have had as much impact on the world as
Germany. It is a land of innovation that has given us the automobile, the thermometer, air bags, nuclear fission, the printing
press, aspirin, MP3 technology, the jet engine, helicopters, and
even the gummy bear.
In Germany you can visit the birthplaces of many famous individuals who have impacted human kind:
Luther, Einstein, Marx, Beethoven, Bach, Engels, Kant, Nietzsche, and Bosch, just to name a few.
Did You Know?
Here are some interesting facts about Germany:
•• Germany has over 1660 castles which are a major tourist attraction. Some are still inhabited by aristocratic families, others have been transformed into hotels and restaurants, and
others are in ruins.
•• The Fairy Grottoes (Feengrotten) in Saalfeld, Thuringia, are
the world’s most colorful caves, according to the Guinness
Book of World Records.
Visitor Guide – Come and See SAP
•• Germany was the first country in the world to adopt daylight
saving time, in 1916 during World War I.
•• Ulm Cathedral is the tallest church in the world, at 161.53
meters (530 feet) in height. It was the world’s tallest building
from 1890 to 1908.
•• The Wurzburg Residence possesses the world’s largest fresco ceiling (677 square meters, or 7,287 square feet). It is the
work of Venetian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo
(1696–1770).
•• The German Autobahns form the oldest motorway network
in the world (first section completed in 1932) as well as one
of the densest – 12,000 kilometers (7,456 miles) for a country of 357,021 square kilometers (137,800 square miles). It is
also the only one in Europe to have no general speed limit.
•• Soccer (or “football,” as it is called here) is the most popular
sport in Germany, and the German Football Association is
the largest association of its kind in the world. There are
more football fan clubs in Germany than anywhere in the
world.
•• Germans rank second in worldwide beer consumption per
person, after Ireland. Beer is officially considered a food in
Bavaria, where the normal-size beer glass, the Mass, is 1 liter.
Germany is the cheapest place in Europe to buy beer, but it is
also the most difficult in which to decide on a beer, since
there are more than 1,500 different brands and types of beer
in Germany.
•• When ordering your beer in Germany, remember this: To get
one beer, show your thumb. If you show your first finger, that
means you want two beers – one with the thumb and one
with the finger. So, unless you want to order two beers, it’s
thumbs up!

SAP Headquarters
Walldorf has been the major location of SAP since 1980 and it
still hosts the headquarters of SAP as a corporation as well as
of the company’s German subsidiary. The town is close to the
city of Heidelberg. The company is the market leader for enterprise application software and was founded in 1972. SAP
(which stands for “Systems, Applications, and Products in Data
Processing”) has a rich history of innovation and growth, and is
a true industry leader. SAP applications and services enable
more than 109,000 customers worldwide to operate profitably,
adapt continuously, and grow in a sustainable way. With revenue (IFRS) of €14.2 billion for the year 2011, SAP has more than
53,000 employees and sales and development locations in
more than 75 countries worldwide.
SAP is listed on several stock exchanges, including the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE),
under the symbol “SAP.”
The location in Walldorf is by far the largest SAP location worldwide with more than 8,800 SAP employees (as of April 20,
2011) who come from 75 different countries. Walldorf is also
home for the biggest SAP development location (SAP Labs) on
the globe.
However, the SAP headquarter is not the only SAP office in this
region. It collaborates actively with offices in nearby Sankt
Leon-Rot, which has 3,000 employees overall. Taking both SAP
locations together, the company has 69 buildings and an SAP
Guesthouse with an overall net floor area of 400,000 square
meters (4,305,000 square feet), with 8,500 square meters
(91,500 square feet) taken up by the data center located in
Sankt Leon-Rot.

VISA REQUIREMENTS
To determine if you require a visa to enter Germany we suggest
that you visit the website of the German Federal Foreign Office
(www.auswaertiges-amt.de).
Should customers of SAP require an invitation letter for their
visa application they may contact the EBC team in Walldorf
([email protected]) for support.
TRAVELING BY PLANE
There are two airports close to SAP’s headquarter: Frankfurt
Airport (FRA) and Stuttgart-Echterdingen Airport (STR). The
journey from Frankfurt Airport to SAP headquarters takes
about one hour by car, while it takes slightly longer from StuttgartEchterdingen Airport. Concerning airfare, flights to Frankfurt
are usually somewhat more expensive than to Stuttgart.
When booking flights to Frankfurt, you should be aware of
Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN), which serves low-cost carriers
but is not connected to Frankfurt Airport. Frankfurt Hahn is approximately one hour from the Frankfurt main airport by car.
Frankfurt Airport (FRA)
Frankfurt Airport is the largest airport in Germany, located north
of Walldorf. It offers both domestic and international flights and
is the most frequently used airport for visits to Walldorf.
The airport has two terminals and a very good infrastructure. For
further information, go to the airport’s website (www.frankfurtairport.com).
Each terminal has a “Meeting Point” beyond baggage
claim and customs, marked with four arrows pointing to a
circle. If you booked a shuttle for group transportation, someone will be waiting for you there (please see section “Shuttle
Service”).
The journey from Frankfurt Airport to SAP headquarters takes
about one hour by car (95 kilometers, or 59 miles).
An overview of Frankfurt Airport can be found in the “Appendix”
of this document.
Stuttgart-Echterdingen Airport (STR)
The second closest airport to SAP headquarters is StuttgartEchterdingen Airport, located southeast of Walldorf. Further information about the airport can be found on the airport website (www.flughafen-stuttgart.de).
The airport has four terminals, but only in terminals 1 and
3 you will find Meeting Points. These can be found beyond
baggage claim and customs, marked with four arrows pointing
to a circle. If you booked a shuttle for group transportation,
someone will be waiting for you there (please see section
“Shuttle Service”).
Journey time from Stuttgart-Echterdingen Airport to SAP
headquarters takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes by car
(115 kilometers, or 71 miles).

Traveling by Train
As the infrastructure is very well developed in Europe, and in
Germany in particular, taking the train is a great and easy way
of traveling. Furthermore, the trains usually run on time, so this
mode of travel is very convenient, especially for a group of people on longer journeys to major cities.
In Germany, there are four major types of trains:
•• Deutsche Bahn, or DB (national and international trains)
•• S-Bahn (tram or streetcar)
•• U-Bahn (subway system)
•• Private railways (generally scenic railways in tourist areas)
The Deutsche Bahn (and its other European counterparts) has
numerous classes of trains: ICE (Inter-City Express), TEE or
TGV (Trans-European Express), IC (InterCity), EC (EuroCity),
and so on. It is possible to book a train ticket online and print it
out directly.
For further information and bookings, please visit the Deutsche
Bahn website (www.bahn.de).

Sightseeing
Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region
The Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region has been a European
metropolitan region since 2005. Such regions are seen as
drivers for social, economic, and cultural development. The
triangle – with Mannheim, Heidelberg, and Ludwigshafen
as the three main cities – stands for a highly integrated and
collaborative area.
The Rhine-Neckar region is located in the midst of four important wine-growing areas notable for their particularly mild climate conditions. As a result, the region regularly hosts wellknown wine events, such as the world’s largest wine festival
(Bad Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt) and the German Vintage Wine
Festival in Neustadt.
Furthermore, the metropolitan region accommodates a strong
economy. Major corporations like SAP AG, BASF SE, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, Fuchs Petrolub AG, Bilfinger
Berger AG, and Freudenberg & Co. KG are situated here, which
makes this region one of the nation’s most important business
locations.
For more detailed information on cultural and scientific
aspects, please visit the region’s official website
(www.m-r-n.com).
Heidelberg
The city of Heidelberg is known for its world-famous castle,
which has enchanted poets, musicians, and visitors from all
over the world. Furthermore, Heidelberg accommodates
Germany’s oldest university and can look back on a very long
and interesting history. The notable old town (Altstadt) is the
most visible sign of Heidelberg’s historical background and
forms the center of this city with 145,000 people.
However, this wonderful town is also a modern scientific and
economic location with an international reputation and a very
lively and varied cultural scene. All these facts together may
explain why about 3.5 million guests choose to come to Heidelberg every year.
Heidelberg Castle
The Heidelberg Castle (in German, Schloss Heidelberg or
Heidelberger Schloss) is a landmark of Heidelberg (see Figure
4). You cannot go to Heidelberg without visiting its castle or,
more precisely, the ruins of the castle. It is among the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps. The castle
sits on a plateau halfway down the Königsstuhl mountain,
which overlooks the city and the Neckar River. Many rulers built
and rebuilt parts of the castle throughout the years, and, given
that each epoch has its own style, the castle shows evidence of
all these different styles, from the 13th century to the 17th
century.
Heidelberg accommodates more than 3 million visitors and
about 1 million overnight stays every year. Most of the foreign
visitors come from the United States or Japan. And the most
important attraction is certainly the castle. Some visitors are
so captivated with the Heidelberg Castle that they decide to
get married there. In fact, there are about 100 weddings per
year at this famous ruin.

Heidelberg Tun
The famous Heidelberg Tun (in German, Grosses Fass), contained within the cellars of the Heidelberg Castle, is the world’s
largest wine vat with a capacity of approximately 55,345 gallons (127,000 liters) of wine. Heidelberg Castle has a history of
enormous vats; today’s cask (Fass) is the fourth in the
history of the Neckar town. Today’s wine vat was made in 1751,
and it is said that 130 oak trees were used in its construction. It
has only rarely been used as a wine vat and currently enjoys
more use as a tourist attraction as well as a dance floor, since
this is what was constructed on top of the tun.
To receive the most current information on events or special
offers in Heidelberg or to get an impression of the wonderful
old town of Heidelberg, access the city’s tourist website (www.
heidelberg-marketing.de). There you can also find very informative and comprehensive tourist information brochures and
detailed information on current events.
