30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Gospel Summary
Luke introduces the parable about a Pharisee and a tax collector with the statement that it is
addressed “to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else.”
Two men go up to the temple to pray. The Pharisee, standing in a prominent place, thanks God
that he is not like the rest of humanity—or even like the tax collector he had noticed. He also
reminds God that he fasts twice a week, and pays tithes on his whole income. The tax collector,
standing at a distance, beats his breast and prays, “O God, be merciful to me a sinner.” Jesus
then remarks that the tax collector who humbled himself before God went home justified, not
the Pharisee who had exalted himself.
Today at our Eucharist we ask to be freed from illusions that we have fashioned about ourselves,
and pray for the grace of sharing in Christ’s humility. Through his authentic humility, we will be
able to stand before God in our own unique truth, and thus make it possible to receive divine
mercy and go home justified.

come one. The Archdiocese of San Francisco Office of Worship will be hosting a training here at STM on
Saturday, October 29th 10a-3p & November 5th 10a-12p. The cost is $20 pre-registered $25 for sameday registrants (price does no include lunch, please bring your own) Please contact the church office if you

An election year message from the Roman
Catholic bishops of Minnesota
Faithful Citizenship means prayerful, active, and responsible participation in the political
process. That includes knowledgeably exercising the right to vote with a well-formed
conscience.
Voting is a privilege and an important duty. It is an opportunity for God’s faithful to love
our neighbors by electing legislators who will hopefully enact policies that protect the
weak, strengthen the family, promote the conditions for all to flourish, and ensure that
citizens can practice their faith without fear of reprisal.
The responsibility of voting is especially important to Minnesotans this year; our entire
state legislature is up for election. At a time when many Catholics feel politically homeless and not represented well by either party, this year’s elections provide a special opportunity to work for life and dignity where it matters most—in our own backyard. Minnesota Catholics should not let frustrations with the presidential race prevent them from participating in our many important local elections.
The choices we are to make on Election Day are not always obvious. We must rise above
partisanship, self-interest, and emotions to elect candidates who are most likely to work
for the common good and govern in a manner consistent with God’s providential care for
all of creation. We should prepare ourselves by forming our consciences, studying the
candidates’ positions and character, and turning to God for guidance in prayer.
As you get ready to cast your vote, we encourage you to visit the Minnesota Catholic
Conference’s election resources center, at MNCatholic.org/election. Here, you’ll find a
novena to help you prayerfully prepare for election day, resources to help you find out
where the candidates stand on the issues, and materials for forming your conscience.

Sacrament of Baptism (infants): Parents & Godparents
must attend Baptism Preparation Class. Our class schedule is
every 2nd Friday of the month from 6:30pm-7:30pm at Scanlan hall.
Sacrament of Reconciliation: Saturdays & Sundays before
and during Masses
Sacrament of Matrimony: Registered couples contact us at
least 6 months prior to wedding date.
Communion to the homebound & the ill: Anyone who is
homebound or ill & would like to receive Communion, call the
office to schedule a visit.
Anointing of the Sick: Anytime upon request. If a parishioner
is seriously ill, please inform the parish office regarding an
immediate visit for anointing .
Funeral Arrangements: Funeral Director should contact parish office.
For Children and Youth: For infants, STM offers a “Children’s Room” where parents can follow Mass while babies can play.
We also have RCIC.
For Adults: English Charismatic group, Sundays at 5:00PM: St. Benedict’s Young
Adult Group (18 to late 30s), Faith Sharing meeting; 1st & 3rd Saturdays at
