Porsche wins in Le Mans – 5,233 kilometers on the limit
The 84th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans will always be
remembered for its dramatic finish on June 19, 2016. Porsche
took its 18th overall victory when the leading Toyota retired on
the final lap. The pace at the front in the duel with the
Japanese manufacturer and the many lead changes pushed
everyone to the limit and beyond.
Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche
AG, witnessed it from the team’s garage: “What happened in
Le Mans is almost incomprehensible. From the first to the last
lap this race was competition on the ultimate level in terms of
sport and technology – and it was thrilling as well. The race
asked the utmost from our cars, our drivers and the team. We
always were either in the lead or in striking distance of Toyota.
We were fighting until the end and never gave up. This spirit
was rewarded in the end. We have the greatest respect for
Toyota.”

In total the race saw four safety car periods (16 laps) and 24
slow zones.
Car number 2 spent a total of 38 minutes and five seconds in
the pits for refueling and tire changes. Because of a water
pump change and repairs for the subsequent damage, car
number 1 was in the pits for a total of two hours, 59 minutes
and 14 seconds.
The average speed of the winning Porsche 919 Hybrid was
134.5 mph (216.4 km/h).
The highest top speed of a Porsche 919 Hybrid in the race
was 207.5 mph (333.9 km/h) and was done by Brendon
Hartley on lap 50.
The winning team of Romain Dumas (FR), Neel Jani (CH) and
Marc Lieb (DE) in the number 2 car completed 384 laps
(5,233.54 kilometres or 3252 miles).
The Porsche 919 Hybrid recuperated and used 2,22 kWh (8
megajoule) per lap. If it was a power plant, a family home
could be supplied with electricity for three months.
Car number 2 was leading the race for 51 laps. The number 1
sister car of Timo Bernhard (DE), Brendon Hartley and Mark
Webber (AU) was leading for 52 laps in the first third of the
race.
Car number 2 was refueled 30 times, car number 1 was
refueled 20 times.
Due to the many phases with reduced speed because of
safety car periods and slow zones, the race distance was
almost 150 kilometres short of the distance covered in 2015.
For 327 of the 384 laps the number 2 car was able to go at full
race pace. On 57 laps either the safety car was on track or at
least one so called slow zone was in place – this means that
only 80 km/h was allowed for safety reasons at certain parts of
Car number 2 used 11 sets of tires in the race. The first set
were rain tires, all others were slick tires.
After three rounds of the FIA World Endurance Championship,
with double points in Le Mans, Porsche now leads the
championship with 127 points, followed by Audi (95) and
Toyota (79). In the drivers’ world championship
Dumas/Jani/Lieb have scored 94 points and are leading by a
gap of 39 points. Bernhard/Hartley/Webber are currently in
19th position with 3.5 points.

Porsche Founds Digitization Competence Center
Porsche is moving into the fast of lane of new technology. The
Supervisory Board of the company has approved the founding
of Porsche Digital GmbH. The objective of the new enterprise
is to further develop Porsche as the leading provider of digital
mobility solutions in the premium automotive segment. Thilo
Koslowski will be the managing director of Porsche Digital
GmbH. He recently joined Porsche from the United States IT
consulting company Gartner Inc. Koslowski is considered an
expert in the automotive, internet, and technology sectors.
The newly founded company will be headquartered in
Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart. Further affiliated offices will be in
Berlin, Silicon Valley, and China. The Silicon Valley operation
will be a subsidiary of Porsche Cars North America, Inc.
"Our business environment is changing ever more
dynamically," said Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, Supervisory Board
chairman of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG. "Porsche Digital
GmbH will strengthen the brand, develop innovative customer
experiences, and attract new partners. We are combining the
traditional Porsche spirit with the power of new technologies."
For Porsche CEO Oliver Blume, the new subsidiary "is a
logical step in order for Porsche to successfully position itself
for the digital future." Blume adds that for Porsche, digitization
has three dimensions: product, customer, and companies.
"Porsche Digital GmbH is our Competence Center where
visions are turned into reality," says Blume. There, digital
customer experiences, products, business areas, and
business processes will be identified and further developed.
The Porsche subsidiary will cooperate closely with all
departments in testing and implementing new value creation
models and innovative product offerings. Among the tasks of
Porsche Digital GmbH will be the identification and evaluation
of trends which ensure access to relevant technologies.
Porsche not only believes in its own potential for innovation,
but also its partnerships. Porsche Digital GmbH considers
itself to be an interface between Porsche and innovators
around the world. This applies in particular to the areas of
connectivity, smart mobility, and autonomous vehicles. As part
of Porsche's digital transformation, the new subsidiary will
promote long-term partnerships with suitable partners and in
this way create a digital ecosystem. There are also plans for
equity holdings in venture capital funds and start-ups which
offer opportunities for close collaboration with innovative, highgrowth companies, talents, and new technologies.
"Digitization is leading to the renaissance of the automobile
and is making it the central element of our digital lifestyle,"
says the subsidiary's new managing director Thilo Koslowski.
"We will create digital customer experiences typical of
Porsche which are fascinating and intelligent – both inside and
outside the vehicle."
The foundation of the subsidiary is part of a major innovation
offensive at Porsche. A concerted effort is being made at the
company to establish innovation management across
departments as well as systematically cataloging and
promoting ideas. "Innovation does not emerge by itself. It is all
about developing ideas systematically," says Porsche CEO
Blume. "Porsche has many ideas. The challenge is to think
across functional divisions, use external resources, and take
concrete action very rapidly – especially in the digital
environment," added Blume.
