The Mukwonago Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Center is a dynamic organization comprised of
over 300 members that help to shape the economy, promote community and set the pace for the future growth
of Mukwonago and our surrounding neighbors. Through our programs, volunteer committees and events, we
are providing the services and resources to help our members grow while gaining exposure throughout our
community, county and state.

preserving the quality of life we all enjoy. Since our members' businesses extend outside of Mukwonago, we
also work to partner with other chambers, communities, businesses and civic organizations.
The Chamber is comprised of a diverse group of people who share a passion for having a sense of place for
their families, conducting business, and having a passion of ownership of their community. The opportunities
for involvement are as varied as our member base. Our members and volunteers are an integral part of
creating many fabulous community events such as our Holiday Midnight Magic Event, Fall Festival, Summer
Golf Outing, and our signature Spring Fling Dinner/Auction. This event, along with many others hosted by
our Chamber is a wonderful testimonial to the strength and commitment of our members and volunteers.
2011 is a year of growth and reflection. Growth seen with our current Highway 83 expansion project, working
to bring new businesses to our community along with forming new partnerships, all while reflecting on the
lessons learned by our own individual struggles through very turbulent economic times. These lessons are
reminders of our perseverance in difficult times and our ability to look beyond with a vision of new
adventures and better tomorrows both individually and as a community!

Located in southern Waukesha County, the Village of Mukwonago is easy to reach from both Wisconsin and
Illinois via I-43, the Rock Freeway. Mukwonago offers picturesque views of Phantom Lake to the west,
Vernon Marsh State Wildlife Area to the north and the Mukwonago and Fox rivers.
Interstate 94 lies 14 miles to the east, while Interstate 43 is easily accessed with an entrance and exit ramp
right at Mukwonago. State Highways 20, 36 and 83 allow for the smooth flow of traffic to several major
municipalities. County roads and rustic roads make travel both convenient and scenic.
Mukwonago is about 30 minutes from Milwaukee, Racine and the Illinois border. A short drive of about 20
minutes will take you to the popular vacation resorts of Lake Geneva or Alpine Valley.
Mukwonago is conveniently located within 35 minutes of General Mitchell International Airport and within
five miles of East Troy Municipal Airport. Mukwonago has all of the major attractions of southeastern
Wisconsin and has a small-town atmosphere with a big-city attitude for work, education and recreation. In
2011 State Highway 83 will be closed from the north side of the Village of Mukwonago to Genesee while the
road is improved and widened to four lanes. During this construction period, the entire Village of Mukwonago
will continue to be open for business with alternate access from the north.
There should be no changes from the south, east and west but it may be challenging to reach Mukwonago
from the north.
The Chamber of Commerce suggests following State Highway 59 to North Prairie, then taking County E
south to County EE, then east to County NN to the Village of Mukwonago. Another route from Waukesha
would be Count I to Hwy NN to the village. The official State detour will also be marked, looping from
Genesee to Waukesha to Vernon and then back to Mukwonago.
Just remember that your favorite businesses are still open and worth the trip since “All Roads Lead to

The Village of Mukwonago was incorporated as an individual municipality in 1905. A board of six trustees
now governs the village. Three trustees are elected at each annual spring election for a term of two years. The
Village President is chosen at the regular spring election in odd-numbered years for a term of two years. The
municipal justice is elected at the regular spring election in even-numbered years. Currently, there are nine
other administrative/management positions in the village.
The Potawatomi Indians first settled the Village of Mukwonago in the 1700s. The village is at the confluence
of the Mukwonago and Fox rivers. The term “Mukwonago” translates to “Place of the Bear.” In the spring of
1836, Sewall Andrews and Henry Camp (the first “white settlers”) constructed their homes about a mile
northwest of the Indian village. Also in 1836, Mukwonago’s first plat was drawn; most of the streets in the old
part of the village still bear the names of the early settlers. The Andrews house still stands today and is now
home to the Mukwonago Red Brick House Museum.
In the spring of 1836, Andrews started the village’s first mercantile business and built a store on what was to
become “the Village Square.”
For the rest of the 1800s, Mukwonago expanded as a farming community. During this period, dairy and crop
production were the main economic activities. In 1885, completion of the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste.
Marie Railroad (the Soo Line, now part of Canadian Pacific)—which runs through the village—provided the
population with transportation and distribution of its products.
In the early 1900s, as the Mukwonago area was “discovered,” travelers came to enjoy the recreational
activities afforded by the lakes, springs and outdoors, and the hospitality and tourism trades began to grow.
Day trips to the area became convenient with the interurban line, which the Milwaukee Electric Railway &
Light Company ran from Milwaukee to East Troy.
The area remained relatively static and contained through the 1960s. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s,
however, new home construction, subdivision development and business expansion escalated; the size of the
village itself grew through annexation. Interstate 43 (the Rock Freeway) was constructed. Running from
Milwaukee to Beloit and passing through Mukwonago, it created a simple and convenient connection to both
Milwaukee and Illinois. This favored commercial and industrial development. The creation of the
Mukwonago Industrial Park in the 1980s provided a well-defined home for industry and heavier commerce.
At the turn of the 21st century, Mukwonago’s Gateway Center (just south of I-43) became the anchor location
for large retail businesses and the D.N. Greenwald Center (medical), with room for many more to come.
Come and visit! See for yourself the beauty of the Mukwonago area! Built around upper and lower Phantom
Lakes, the pristine Mukwonago River and the Fox River. Also in close proximity are Potters and Beulah
Lakes, Old World Wisconsin and Lake Lulu. Highly rated schools, a top-rated public library, a number of
daycare choices, athletic parks, shopping and restaurants are all available to you.
Mukwonago is a mix of beautiful older homes, areas built in the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s, and newly developed
subdivisions offering a style and age for everyone’s taste. Condominium living has become very popular with
condominiums in several areas representing a variety of floor plans. With several lakes available in the
immediate area, summer homes and lakeside living is also an option. Centrally located, Mukwonago offers
easy access to airports and major cities in each direction.

Welcome to the Mukwonago Museum located at the intersection of Highway 83 and ES. The museum is open
June through September on Sundays from 1 – 4 pm or by special requests for children or group tours. The
museum houses two collections—a house museum featuring Victorian furnishing and an Indian Museum

Experience living history at Wisconsin’s landmark electric railroad museum! In the days before urban sprawl,

Come on, come on, do the locomotion with me...
Little Obie the miniature Canadian Nation locomotive is chugging into a station near you for “Operation
Lifesaver Tour 2012”. All families are invited to come spend the day in Mukwonago with their new friend
Little Obie. For several years, Little Obie has been making his rounds in Canada and the US to teach families
the importance of railway safety. “Operation Lifesaver” is a nationwide program dedicated to safety around
trains and especially railroad crossings. Children will be captivated by the adorable little train, Little Obie,
along with accompanying friends’ flat car and caboose.
The East Troy Railroad Museum has partnered with the Canadian National Railroad to offer this event for
kids of all ages to learn more about railway safety. The kids will also be given the opportunity to ride on board
a train led by Little Obie and have their picture taken. The weekend festivities will be run by the Mukwonago
Area Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Center and will take place at Indian Head Park, north of Village Hall,
on Main Street.
The East Troy Railroad Museum will be making runs to and from Mukwonago all weekend. Come join us for
a ride on the Historic Trolley, a ride on Little Obie, a jump in the bounce house, face-painting, balloons and a
bite to eat from one of our local restaurants.
Obie is on wheels, and is looking forward to visiting local schools during his stay. Wherever Little Obie and
his crew go, the message is the same. Please be careful around trains and railroad crossings, LOOK! LISTEN!

Chamber Golf Outing
June 20, 2012

Lakeside Lyrics–Music in the Park
Local bands will play the night away, as you enjoy what’s in your picnic basket, or purchase food and drink
from local area restaurants. This new family event will be held once each month from 6-9 pm at Indian Head
Park. The East Troy Railroad will be making a couple of stops to bring in music lovers via trolley each of
those evenings.
Fall Fest
September 15, 2012
Village-wide family celebration of fall held every year on the third Saturday in September. Kids activities
including rock wall, pony rides, miniature train rides, scarecrow building, pumpkin decorating, crafters,
vendors, food and live music. Enter your chili in Mukwonago’s annual chili cook off, or bake an apple dessert

PARKS
State Park-Kettle Moraine Forest
Mukwonago is located just minutes from the edge of the Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest,
which has over 22,000 acres of forest. Camping, swimming, hunting, fishing, hiking, cross-country skiing,
snowmobiling, biking and horseback riding are available. The Southern Unit headquarters are located just

County Park-Mukwonago County Park
Located approximately three miles west of the Village of Mukwonago on Highway LO. This 222-acre park
site includes a high ridge (formed during the last glacial period) that stretches nearly the length of the park.
Recreational opportunities include swimming, fishing, camping, picnicking, nature hiking and sledding. Call

Field Park
Located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Highway 83 and Highway NN. Enjoy an afternoon
using the 3,000-square-foot facility equipped with a full kitchen, baseball diamond and a large walking path.

Indian Head Park
Located near Phantom Lake, north of Village Hall. This park features a small pavilion, a beach and plenty of
green open space for other activities.
Miniwaukan Park
Located at the end of McKenzie Road behind the Mukwonago Industrial Park and Meadow Park Estates
Subdivision. This area is used by many community organizations, including the Soccer Club and Braves
Football. This park features a football field, Frisbee-golf course, six soccer fields, picnic tables and six
baseball fields.
Minor Park
Located along Highway LO just east of Highway I. Minor Park is home to the Mukwonago Women’s Softball
League. Two softball diamonds and a wooded picnic area with a small open shelter make up the park.
Beautiful oak trees and landscape draw many photographers to the park for photos.
Washington Avenue Park
Located in the block bordered by Park Avenue to the north, Washington Avenue to the south, Franklin Street
to the west and Division Street to the east, directly next to the Mukwonago Community Library. The park
consists of a basketball court and a baseball diamond, as well as plenty of open space.
Phantom Glen Park
Located at the end of Andrews Street along Phantom Lake. This small, quaint park consists of an open shelter
with electricity and is ideal for intimate gatherings.

Mukwonago Town Park
Located one block south of the Town Hall, at the intersection of CTH EE and Beulah Road. Most of the
soccer programs are held at this park with two large soccer fields, three medium fields and three peewee
soccer fields. The park also has two baseball fields, a playground structure and a park pavilion. The Town
Park is available for rent.
Lauren’s Park
Located on CTH EE just a short distance west of CTH I. Lauren’s Park provides four baseball diamonds for
all age groups during the summer programs. This park also contains two sand volleyball courts, one basketball
hoop, a playground structure and a park pavilion for rent.
Oak Ridge Park
The town’s newest park is mainly for soccer program practice fields. This park also contains a new baseball
field. Oak Ridge Park is located south of Sugden Road on Oak Ridge Drive. From Highway 83, turn west on
Sugden Road to Oak Ridge Drive. Turn south and the park is on the left.
GOLFING
Mukwonago golfers never have far to go to find a picturesque and challenging golf course. With a variety of
facilities available, you can choose from championship golf courses that feature 18 to 27 holes, a Scottish

The current trade center population is estimated at 50,000, and the number is rising as local residences and

of southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois (Madison, Milwaukee and Chicago) and major transportation

Mukwonago's Comprehensive Master Plan of 2000 states that industrial growth is strongly encouraged, with
